    Doug Collins decided to move Jordan to the point guard spot against Seattle on March 11, 1989. He finished that game with 15 assists. Two days later, he had a game of 21/14/14 against the Pacers in just 30 minutes of playing time in a 32-point blowout win. He reached the triple double mark in just 21 minutes.
    Jordan continued to play at the PG spot until the end of the season. In these 24 games he averaged 29.3ppg, 8.9rpg, 10.6 apg, 2.4spg. Between March 24 and April 14, 1989, he recorded a triple double in ten of the eleven games, including seven consecutive ones. In the game he didn't record a TD, he finished with 40 points, 11 assists and 7 rebounds.
    In this game, he has 16 assists against the Lakers and ties his career-high which was set in his rookie year. (Three days later, on March 24, he had 17 assists at Portland which remained as his highest.)
    In the first 3 quarters of this game he rarely shoots the ball and feeds his teammates. In the 4th, he scores 12 points and leads the Bulls to the victory.
    I've included a good article about his PG days after the game notes.
    Post game notes & quotes
    ====================
    INGLEWOOD, CA -- If there wasn't already enough excitement with Michael Jordan in town, the Bulls wrote their own Hollywood ending Tuesday evening at The Forum.
    The Bulls held Los Angeles without a field goal for 5:22 of the fourth quarter and then had to withstand a furious comeback attempt by the defending NBA champions en route to a 104-103 victory before a sellout crowd of 17,505.
    Michael Jordan's two free throws with 48 seconds remaining proved to be the winning points for the Bulls (38-26), who evened their record at 1-1 on their five-game road trip following last Saturday's loss at Indiana.
    The Bulls victory, coupled with Atlanta's loss to Detoit, leaves them tied with the Hawks for fourth place overall in the Eastern Division.
    The Lakers (45-20) had several chances to avoid their second straight loss at home and fifth overall following Jordan's free throws. But Magic Johnson, the league's second-best free throw shooter, missed one of two attempts with 37 seconds left and following a missed shot by Craig Hodges, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's skyhook attempt was short with one second left.
    Riley's first option was Worthy, but he wasn't open, so Magic and Abdul-Jabbar worked Jordan and Cartwright on the right of the lane. With the clock winding down, Abdul-Jabbar got the ball, but Cartwright had shoved him about three feet farther out than the Lakers' center would have liked. His 18-foot sky hook bounded away.
    "I did get him a little more away from the basket, but he has made that shot a million times over the years," Cartwright said. "Considering that he missed the shot, I'd say I played good defense."
    Abdul-Jabbar said his final shot "felt pretty good. I was out far -- I got pushed out that far. I didn't have time to get better position."
    "The game . . . this was a great win for us tonight," Bulls coach Doug Collins said. "Because we start such an unbelievable road trip. The defense in the second half was superb. This was the first time we have beaten a good club on the road in a long time. That is why this is such a big win for us."
    Starting his sixth game as point guard -- the Bulls are 4-2 in those games -- Michael Jordan had 10 first-half assists and wound up tying his career high with 16. The Bulls star had double figures in assists in five of six games as the point guard.
    "Jordan had an excellent game," said Chicago coach Doug Collins. "People don't realize how good his defense is. He makes everyone around him play better."
    "I am totally mystified with our fourth quarters," Lakers coach Pat Riley said. "A pattern is developing that I don't like. We're just not getting the job done."

    =======================
    Bulls' Jordan Makes a New Point by Gerry Fraley
    Atlanta Journal and Constitution. April 9, 1989
    Michael Jordan now plays point guard, which means the Chicago Bulls give the ball more often to the NBA's most productive offensive player.
    How does that strike the rest of the NBA?
    "I don't like it," Atlanta Hawks guard Doc Rivers said. "I think it's terrible. It's not fair."
    "He was a nightmare already," Hawks coach Mike Fratello said. "Now, he gets the ball even more."
    "Everybody wonders why they didn't do it before," Golden State coach Don Nelson said.
    Chicago general manager Jerry Krause found some humor in his team's switch of Jordan from the shooting guard position.
    "It's like the old joke about the 2,000-pound gorilla," Krause said. "Where does he sleep? Anywhere he wants. Great players can play different positions."
    No other NBA player has made a change of more league-altering significance. Los Angeles Lakers point guard Magic Johnson played center against Philadelphia in the 1980 NBA Finals, but that lasted only one game. In just 16 games at point guard, Jordan has gone from the league's leading scorer the last two seasons to being lumped with Johnson, John Stockton of Utah and Isiah Thomas of Detroit as the elite among NBA point guards. Jordan may already be the best of the group.
    Entering today's 12:35 p.m. game against the Hawks at The Omni, Jordan has seven triple-doubles (double-figure totals in scoring, rebounding and assists) in the last eight games. His streak of seven consecutive triple-doubles ended Friday in a 114-112 overtime loss to Detroit in which Jordan finished with 40 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds. Before Jordan's run, the most consecutive triple-doubles in the league this season was two, by Johnson and Portland's Clyde Drexler.
    Since Oscar Robertson, who averaged double-figure totals in each category over a full season for his first six years in the league, Johnson has the most triple-doubles in a season with 18. Jordan already has 11 triple-doubles while learning the new position.
    "Everybody has to watch him with the ball," Drexler said. "The other guys are free to roam, and their shooting percentages are going to soar. I think (Jordan) handles the ball better than Magic. (Jordan) just makes everybody else better. When he gets used to that position . . . "
    The significance of the move can be better measured by the tremors it has sent through the league. Many things have changed.
    Jordan has changed the Bulls. They are 11-5 since the switch and have created a three-way race with the Hawks and Milwaukee for the fourth playoff spot - and homecourt advantage in the first round - in the Eastern Conference.
    Jordan has changed the playoff outlook. In four seasons with him at shooting guard, the Bulls are 5-15 in the playoffs and have advanced past the first round just once. They wilted at playoff time because of too much reliance on Jordan and limited contributions elsewhere.
    Having Jordan as a point guard "certainly makes them a better team," Knicks coach Rick Pitino said. In the playoffs, when the point guard takes pre-eminence, there is "no doubt about them being a force," Pitino said.
    The move was born of frustration.
    "It's a challenge, and that basically is what Michael Jordan is all about," Jordan said. "I've been bothered for some time about the Bulls being a one-dimensional team, a Michael Jordan team. The thing I've been harping about all year has come true. The other guys are getting into the game. They now believe in themselves, and that's what we needed.
    "For the most part, I'm starting to like it. I never dreamed I'd play that position - me, a lifelong (shooting) guard. But it helps. I can call my own plays and get everyone else involved in the offense."
    The passive reactions of teammates triggered the change. In each of the last two seasons, Jordan outscored the Bulls' second-leading scorer by an average of 22.6 points. Only one other player in NBA history, Wilt Chamberlain, had a greater margin over his team's runner-up in scoring.
    Given the Bulls' obvious dependence on Jordan, opponents designed defenses to wear him down. The muggings were pronounced in the fourth quarter, when the Bulls' offense was designed to get the ball to Jordan and get out of the way. Playing one-on-five too often, the Bulls languished in fifth place, and Jordan chafed under the growing label of scorer but not winner.
    Jordan, whose unhappiness at a lack of help in the offense was well known, buckled under the demands. On March 8, his consecutive-game streak ended at 235 because of a pulled groin muscle. Jordan's psyche was of more concern to the Bulls. The next day, coach Doug Collins met with a depressed Jordan for two hours to hash out the situation.
    The resolution: Jordan would change to point guard to replace the injured Sam Vincent.
    The purpose: Jordan would become the creator and therefore force the rest of the team to become more involved on offense.
    The benefit: The Bulls' best player would handle the ball more often but be spared some of the dirty work that was wearing him down.
    Jordan tried point guard briefly in the exhibition season but did not like it. This time, frustration moved him to accept a major change.
    "Doug, in talking with Michael and the staff, thought this was the right time to fool with it," Krause said. "The move has definitely helped us in many, many ways. It's gotten Michael into more of a leadership position, which we talked about with him for a long time. It's hard to lead when you're a (shooting) guard. When you're the (point) guard, leadership is easier.
    "Michael gets a big kick out of getting our players more involved. He likes the position now, and that's a big factor. He's enjoying himself and having a lot more fun."
    The fun comes from having less pain. For shooting guards, the body goes first because of the hammering that goes with the position. At 6- feet-6 and 195 pounds, the slender Jordan is under-equipp

    And people say 80s Jordan was just a scorer! He averaged 32ppg, 8rpg, 8apg, 3spg, and 1bpg for the whole 1989 season :D Fans thought Kevin Durant was great last year, but check out these numbers from a guy who DIDN'T win the MVP award in the 89' season!

    This was my first ever live attendance game as a kid. I didn't realize how lucky I was seeing Magic, Kareem, Coop, Worthy, Jordan, and Pippen all in the same game in a nail biting thriller. But it did make me an NBA fan for life.

    The flow of the game in this era was awesome to watch. When Magic came back in 96, although being a step slower, he embarrassed the new breed night in and night out. There is no doubt in my mind that the mid 80s to early 90s is the most talented era in basketball.

    Can you imagine, he was only 3 rebounds away from achieving a record 11 triple-doubles in a row. I think MJ finished with 15 triple-doubles that season. Magic's best was only 18 in a season. What if MJ played a whole season at the Point. Unreal.

    Jordan put up 10 triple doubles in 11 games and that was with a groin injury late in the season lol anything is possible with Jordan. He was a scorer and an unbelievable defender that was his game and he stuck to it but he was capable of doing anything and he showed it numerous times

    Great video, great game by Jordan. Its a little known fact that in the 1991 Finals against Magic, Jordan averaged 11.4 (57) Assists in the five game series, along with 31.2 Points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.8 Steals and 1.4 Blocks while shooting 55.8% from the field. It seemed like MJ took it as a challenge to show the world that he could dish out assists like Magic (who incidently set an NBA finals record with 12.4 assists per game)

    I remember reading in the paper years ago headlined "Can Jordan Score 100?" They were goin to play the Golden State Warriors, who at the time were a high scoring, no defense, run and gun team. It got some attention and Jordan shunned it off, put up like 38 or so. Scoring just to go out and score for glory was not in his teachings and upbringing.

    It's amazing that during this phase of MJ career people where saying he was just a one man show and could not improve his teammates. Hard to believe people could say that when he was punting on performances like this. I guess it shows that no matter how good you are some people just won't to bring you down.

    3 games later on March 25th, he would start a streak of 7 triple-doubles in a row, fall 3 assist shy of another one, then added another 3 games in a row with a triple double. That's 10 triple-doubles in 11 games. AMAZING. A lot of people probably don't know this of MJ.

    I hope this isn't intended as "fuel" for the whole MJ vs. Magic debate. There's plenty of lopsided meetings to support both sides. The fact remains that Magic really didn't change his game whatsoever to give in to the so-called "matchup." All he cared about was putting his team in the best position to WIN.

    @Flipper79able While normally true (though Jordan averaged 6+ rebounds and 5.5+ assists for most of his career), this was part of a stretch where he played PG. He had a 19-game stretch where he finished with double-digit assists 17 times and averaged 11.95 per game. He also put up 11 triple-doubles in that span and had 3 more games where he was 1 or 2 assists or rebounds (but not both) away from doing so. Then he put up 34/11/9 a couple games later, 34/14/11 a couple games after that.

    I adjusted it based on the number of shot attempts that teams would get in a single game on average in the 60's compared to the shot attempts that teams in the 90's would take. If a 1960's team is taking 105 shots per game, while a 1990's team is only taking 85 shots per game, then you have a ratio that can be used to compare stats from the 60's to the 90's. You should expect that Oscar would get less assists on a team that takes 85 shots compared to a team that takes 105 shots.

    hey beatdoze, MJ has 35 games from 1986 to retirement where he took at least 5 three point attempts in a game. That number DOES NOT include the years of the shortened 3-point line. What was his shooting percentage over those 35 games?? 41 percent. Not bad huh??

  • @gtg309v
    @gtg309v 12 лет назад +1

    Oscar's 1962 stat line where he averaged a triple double was an amazing season, but if you adjust for the fact that team's in the 60's had about a 20% higher shot attempt ratio compared to the 90's, then Oscar's adjusted stat line for that year to what it would look more like if he did what he did in the 90's then it would look like:
    25ppg, 10rpg, 9apg
    Still the closest stat line to a triple double, but shows that in today's game it is nearly infeasible to average a triple double even by him.

    K. Bryant: 23.3ppg, 44%fg%, 4.9rpg, 4.5apg, 1.3 stls

    The reason Oscar's assists should be lower due to the teams in 90's taking less shots is because if the team as a whole attempts (and therefore makes) less shots, then there are less opportunity to accumulate the number of assists he did. If you remove the last 20 shots of a game, then you must assume that you also are removing any assists that Oscar had gotten in those last 20 shots. More possessions = more points/rebounds/assists.

BUT would he have 6 rings by now? Not likely.Get this on ur mind KB is a volume scorer, he takes tons of shots to get his big scoring performances and connects for only 45%.When he scored 50 pts for 4 straight games he was chasing for MJ's record.

    Jordan was a great passer, but Jordan was THE greatest shooter. Why pass it off to a lesser shooter unless they are wide open? Jordan was at his pinnacle when he was playing the 2 guard but trusted his teammates, namely Pippen and Grant, enough to dish them the ball when he was double-teamed. That started around 1990.

    It's not harder to score in this era and if you know how to attack a zone defense you can get your points. "U jordan jesus worshipers disgust me.". I don't think anyone has equated Jordan with being jesus and the ones that do just go too far. There's someone on RUclips named "Kobe24OwnsJordan" and they call Kobe "God". Today's era scoring is easier go see Vince Carter,Tracy Mcgrady says are you stupid yes there was no zones but there was handchecking,no 3 seconds violation which meant a centre or power forward was under the rim and floor was not spread out as it is today.So it was more difficult to score back in the late 80s and early 90s

    Yes Pippen was voted 1 of the Greatest Players ever..rightfully so, given what he did in REVOLUTIONIZING the SF position, but lets be honest, his "Primary" role on the Bulls was that of a COMPLIMENTARY fashion.
    I'm not questioning his place amongst the pantheon of the ALL TIME greats in terms of what he became, I'm merely stating that he, during the "Formative" years of the Bulls, WAS NOT the player you're claiming he was. He had "VERY LITTLE" to do with the teams success in those years..

    If that's true, they should've given it to Jordan in 99 as well, just for the hell of it.

    Umm... I know that this is 9 months late, but..
    Whereas Kobe's 81 point game was gotten against the bottom ranked side in the Eastern Conference with one of the WORST defenses, Jordan compiled his 69 point effort against one of the BEST teams in the whole NBA at the time! Not only that, but he also had 18 rebounds, something like 7 assists and 3 or 4 steals too!
    Just thought I'd point that out for you.

    @Flipper79able Doug Collins (the 1989 Chicago Bulls coach), thought that the Bulls had a better chance of winning with Jordan distributed the ball. Hence why he's played point god for 11 games!!!

    Being the greatest and being the best are 2 different things,im not a Kobe fan nor was i a Jordan fan, im just being objective. All im saying is Kobe as advanced some elements of his game beyond what Jordan did.Jordan fans cant get past the hero worship to admit the truth

    Jordan was a better shooter, rebounder, defender, and shot blocker than Magic was. I wouldn't say that Magic is a better passer though cuz MJ played PG very little and the times he did play it, he averaged 10+ assists easily while keeping his scoring pretty high still.

    yep he's really winning that title with that 6/19 shooting for 17 pts leading LAL to blowing biggest 1st qtr lead in finals history at their home. Definitely like Mike.

    The pace of the game back then scewed his stats and that allowed him to get those triple doubles,he wasnt able to do that throughout his career.Magic is the alltime leader.Dont discredit Kobes 81,he did it in regulation mostly from the perimeter,he had 62 in 3 quarters against Dallas.They were one of the best teams in the league,give credit were it is due.50 point avg for 2 weeks ,only chamberlin has done that,give credit were it is due,

    KB's "CAREER" shooting %'s
    Sub-48%: REG SEASON: 470 (60% of games) -- PLAYOFFS: 84 (64% of games)
    Sub-46%: REG SEASON: 417 (53% of games) -- PLAYOFFS: 73 (56% of games)
    Sub-44%: REG SEASON: 353 (45% of games) -- PLAYOFFS: 64 (49% of games)
    Sub-42%: REG SEASON: 307 (39% of games) -- PLAYOFFS: 53 (40% of games)
    No "Superior" Shooter/Scorer "CONSISTENTLY" shoots "WORSE" & scores "LESS" in the Playoffs, than they do in the Reg Season..

    We're talkin' about the SAME guy who at that time, ONLY averaged 8 pts in the Reg Season & 10 pts in the Playoffs & had VERY LITTLE to do with the teams success during those formative years.
    So please, stop trying to act as if he came in from DAY 1, being the "That Guy" & defensive juggernaut he LATER became. Please!!
    Yes he's one of the GREATEST SF that ever played..hell he REVOLUTIONIZED the position, but he was not "THE" perfect complimentary player from the onset like you're claiming..

  • @kareemali

    thats the thing they play a man to man matchup zone nowadays because there is no illegal defense a player can just lag in an open area where as in the previous era u had more space to operate. So u can just stack players on one side of the floor. It just makes it harder to go one on one every time down but wit passing and shootin it can be beaten but that 10 sec dribble iso stuff in the 90s is gone

    Every time kobe drops 50, ESPN and those lame fans of his wanna compare him to Mike as if Mike was only about scoring a bunch of points in a game. Mike was a winner! You get that? A winner! He won championships! He won league's MVP five times. Finals MVP 6 times. Defensive player of the year! 72-10 in 1996 and 69-13 in 1997. He's the best

    Of the 143 50 pt games since '86, in terms of shooting %'s, MJ's games rank #1, #5, #8, #17, #21, #22, etc. KB's games include 10 of the 30 worst, 7 of the 15 worst & "THE" 3 worst, ranking #118, #120, #122, #129, #131, #132, #133, #141, #142, #143.
    There are 13 50 pt games in NBA "HISTORY", with under 50% shooting. Kobe is responsible for "6" of 'em.

    Hollinger also said that this bulls team under collins would be like a fast paced team today. You can look at this era and tell when someone took a jumpshot the defender was no where to be found. They rarley ever fought for post position. IKnow its important for u guys to hold on to this time because u have an emotional attachment to it but admit that basket ball has progressesed worldwide.

  • @rrTale
    @rrTale 17 лет назад

    Thats arguable. U see KB's mindset kinda puts him in that absurd "gotta shoot 50 or loose" situation. His team rarely got the chance to get in the rhythm cause he was tryin to do so much by himself. They could win just as easily if they played as a team. Dont fool urself, we all watched that situation being overhyped because of the desperate need to find the next MJ, and KB just couldnt resist it. In Michael's day they just didnt hyped it like that.

  • @blackadam06

    Try avg'n 40 in the "FINALS" or avg'n 40 from mid march - mid april (16 games). Or having 866 "STRAIGHT" 'Double Figure' games. Or how about having "8" 50 pt PLAYOFF games & the "ONLY" player in history to have back-2-back 50 pt games in the playoffs. How about having a "CAREER PLAYOFF" avg of 33 pts on 50% shooting. Or having the 4th ALL TIME scoring avg for a season. Or avg 33 pts 8 rebs & 8 assts from the "Point Guard" postion when he was placed there.There's "No" comparison..

  • @rrTale
    @rrTale 16 лет назад

    Actually blackadam that kid, whoever he may be, was right when he said scoring 20 points in '88 was different than now. He was right but not in the way he'd like to be of course. Cause we both know scoring 30, 40 or 50 points back then was significantly harder than it is today. Young fans forget that the absence of handchecking gives the offensive player a great advantage. They dont realise MJ would kill this "no handcheck" league

    And Again, PROVE IT! If he's more "Advanced" in "ANY" particular facet of the game, it would show up in his avg's regarding that facet of the game. So again, PROVE IT!! Show me tangible proof of his "ADVANCED" superiority in the areas you feel he's better at...I'm waiting..

    it also works the other way around.. when you aren't as good (Lakers 24) and they put you up there with the GOAT and the number don't lie.

  • @Edd1e8
    @Edd1e8 17 лет назад

    Keep in mind that a game where Magic scored 40+ usually resulted in a Laker loss with exception to his rookie MVP performance. The Lakers just weren't built on him being a primary weapon like MJ was with the Bulls.
    Jordan IS the better player -- hands down. However, Magic set the bar for MJ as the number of titles to beat. Why do you think 6 was good enough? Its because it was 1 better than Magic.

  • @rrTale
    @rrTale 17 лет назад +1

    U could see MJ beating Magic for assists, but u couldnt see Magic beating Michael in points scored. That's MJ..I dont know which pass is better, MJ's at 1:30 or the ref's at 3:27. By the way cool music starks, one more time congrats on a job vw done

    Correct all the way. Thats what i've been sayin all along to KB fans. They compare prime KB stats against a career MJ. They're so caught up with the whole thing they dont realise that guy's stats are gonna get hit by the twilight of his career. They also think that KB can play at this level till he's 35. LOL. He has at best 3 good years.

  • @EGarrett01
    @EGarrett01 15 лет назад

    If that era was inferior, then why did a 38-year-old Jordan come back and average 23, 5 and 5 and drop 50 a couple times?

  • @blackadam06
    @blackadam06 16 лет назад +1

    "..Kobe's career is far from over and maybe more championships are in store for him. "
    "Maybe" is the right word to use because it ISN'T a certainty by ANY stretch of the imagination that he'll win more titles, or even be in contention for one for that matter, unless you're clairvoyant or something..
    And if that's the case, let me knoew in advance who'll win this Years Finals & NCAA Title game. I could use some good luck betting on Title games this year..

  • @rrTale
    @rrTale 17 лет назад +1

    The situation was overhyped and KB was stayin in the floor for almost the entire 48 minutes gunning a lot to get it. When MJ got his 3 straight 50 pt game he only stayed about 42mpg and he played a much better all around game than KB did. If MJ was dared to chase Wilt's record there's no doubt on my mind he would break it but he wasnt. Next game was the last of the '87 season against the Celtics and MJ only played 25 minutes. Thats right he didnt care about the record, he was more than that.

  • @blackadam06
    @blackadam06 17 лет назад +1

    MJ's "WIZARDS" avgs: 21 ppg, 4 apg & 4 rpg "42% FG"
    KB "FINALS" avgs: 22.1 ppg, 4 apg, 5 rpg, "41.6% FG"
    KB "CAREER" avgs: 24.4 ppg, 4.3 apg, 5.1 rpg, "45% FG"
    If Kobe's more "Advanced", how'd MJ, at 40 yrs old, against the same guys today & under the same defensive rules, manage to compile in "2" yrs, an avg that's virtually "IDENTICAL" to KB's CAREER marks in both his Reg Season "AND" Playoffs avg's?

  • @kareemali

    im not saying hes greater than Mike im just saying he could be at some point cause he does some things that Mike couldnt and he does it without the huge officiating advantage Jordan had.With that hed avg 40
