Michael Jordan 1988: 50pts Vs. Boston Celtics

  • With the legendary Boston Celtics in town, MJ continued his legacy as the greatest performer against the greatest teams. It is this distinction that has always separated the elite from the greats and MJ from the elite.
    The Celtics need no introduction here. Having knocked MJ's young team out of the playoffs in two consecutive years, they yet again took the #1 placing in the eastern bracket. With the best team and Bird in town, MJ would rise again and again.
    Answering Bird's silky-smooth set shots throughout the game, Jordan would shoot 59.4% at 19-32 with 1-2 in threes and 11-11 free throws. He added 5 rebounds, 9 assists, 5 steals and 1 block. But of course, it was the way he dominated and carried the game in his usual spectacular fashion that can never be measured.
    The Celtics roared back in the second half to cut into the Bulls' early lead. MJ shifted into his top gears and attacked the basket in a way only he could. With one incredible shot after another, he secured the Bulls win and took an early seat onto the bench.
    What amazed me most during this era was MJ's ability to get stronger and more energetic as the game entered the 4th quarter. Never settling for jumpers even if he was on, he always attacked the frontline to demoralize the interior defense and sap his opponents' strength. MJ was at his most vicious during these years as an indomitable acrobat and you never knew what he would create next.
    (Box Score):
    50pts
    19-32 fgs (59.4%)
    1-2 threes
    11-11 fts
    5 rebs
    9 asts
    5 steals
    1 blk
    1 to
    4 fouls
    42 minutes

    Mj played a fantastic game that night. He was so unstoppable that it looked like the celtics stopped playing ball and stood and watched mj go to the basket.the g.o.a.t without a doubt!

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 17 лет назад +2

    Jordan's game was just much more conducive to team ball in many ways. He gave 100% effort on the defensive end, which is contagious. He didn't take 75% of the game -- or entire games -- off like Kobe does. He penetrated far more easily than Kobe does, drawing defenders and allowing kickouts to spot-up shooters or dump-offs to big men underneath for finishes. He was an outstanding post player, which again collapsed defenses and allowed the ball to be swung for high quality looks. (cont)

    Great edit hoops. This is one of my favourite games ever. Both teams really played with the intensity of a game 7 in the finals. Jordan literally was everywhere, offensively and defensively. I loved how he hadnt got a dunk the whole game and then in the forth quarter he got two on consecutive possessions!
    Thanks hoops

    Not to mention that he's #1 all time in blocks for a guard and #3 all time in rebounds for a guard. Some folks just don't realize how good he was at BOTH ends of the floor.

    Hakeem might be the most underrated center ever. MJ picked him on his all-NBA team because of his defense and hands. Hak was on the 100stl/100blk club 12 times the 100/200 club 11 times & the 150/300 club 3 times - all records. He was on the 200/100 club once. MJ has the record with 200/100 twice.

    Anyone see those Celtics(Bird,McHale,Parrish)stats all 3 averaged a double double in points and rebounds(well almost- L.B.9.6, K.M.8.5, R.P.8.8). This is why the Celtics & Lakers dominated the 80's with both teams winning a combined 8 titles, also either(Bird's or Magic's)team were in the Finals 9 out of 10 years, truly the Golden Age of Basketball!!!

    Great video. Thank you. Jordan's point breakdown in this game was 14-9-10-17. Some post game quotes from Chicago-Sun Times: "Jordan was spectacular," said Celtic coach K.C. Jones. "He was ready to play before the game. In fact, I'd say he was ready to play before he got up this morning."
    "I'm always ready to play against the Celtics," Jordan said. "They are one of the top teams in the league, the best in our conference. And playing against the best usually brings out the best in me."

    (cont) It's much harder to make plays and get guys involved when you're jacking 25-footers, can't get into the lane at will, and can't gain and maintain post position as easily. Never mind the difference in their vision, passing skill, and willingness to pass the ball. Also efficiency: there's less of a tendency for your teammates to dislike the fact that you're taking 22+ shots when you're hitting 51+% of them as opposed to 44-45% of them.

    There's no way I imagined it. It was in LA, Jordan faked like he was coming out to meet a pass and Kobe overplayed him; he spun off him backdoor and caught a lob which he jammed over Kobe as Kobe recovered. Definitely didn't imagine this because I remember a separate play from the same game where Jordan drove Kobe right, went between his legs and then was instantly on Kobe's left side, and the ref called Kobe on the foul for holding. My imagination is not THAT vivid. :P

    Christen, Jordan had only 19 points in game 3 of the '86 Celtics series, but nearly a triple double (I think 19/10/9 iirc). I think Hoops was just listing the big games Jordan had vs. Boston in the mid-late 80's in sequential order.

    Amen. You can only call it "gunning" when you jack up shot after shot, while continuing to shoot a horrible percentage. MJ never shot a horrible percentage throughtout his career & he "won" with a less than sterling cast of teammates early in his career..

    I'll be posting the first game against each other soon. But it's never been 'against' each other since MJ was dominating with the Bulls when KB was young and was sitting on the bench with KB playing garbage minutes. At age 40 on the Wiz, MJ was a SF. What's there to clear up? If KB shot 50% even for one season maybe there might be something worth talking about for once.

  • @jordanlover23

    MJ constantly abused the best teams for 40+. The bad teams, he usually scored much less as it wasn't necessary to get into his super-zone. Against the Celtics from 85-90, his Bulls career was: 27, 32, 26, 41, 26, 33, 20, 49, 63, 48, 34, 30, 22, 17 (rested for playoffs), 35, 42, 30, 31, 42, 50, 26, 39, 52, 38, 42, 24, 36, 35, 45.

    here's why: 1988 MJ = MVP, All-star MVP, Defensive POY, Slam Dunk Champ, pretty much every award he was eligible for, i doubt we'll see anybody do that again AND, he was still better in the early 90's, damn.

  • @starks23
    @starks23 17 лет назад +1

    The Celtics cut a 21-point deficit to 86-79 early in the fourth quarter before the decisive spurt by the Bulls.
    ``That's when I really saw red, the color of our uniforms, and I made up my mind that Boston was not going to knock us out in the final few minutes,'' Jordan said.
    Bird's streak of consecutive three-point games ended at 15.
    Almost every one of Jordan's team-high nine assists was a penetration dish-off. He absolutely shredded the Celtics with his penetration.

  • @starks23
    @starks23 17 лет назад +1

    romans6thru8, to answer your question about the 63 point game, Jordan's scoring breakdown was like this:
    1st:17pts, 2nd:6pts, 3rd:13pts, 4th:18pts, 1st overtime: 5pts, 2nd overtime: 4pts
    Hope that helps.

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 17 лет назад +1

    There's a Bulls/Lakers game from '98 up on youtube from the user "creamsugar82", but it doesn't show the entire game or every Jordan/Kobe basket. I'm pretty sure it's that game (but it may be another one) where Jordan dunks on Kobe off a spin-off near the FT line and alley-oop. Kobe tries to recover and elevates to block the shot, but Jordan two hands it ON him, literally. I'm pretty sure I didn't imagine this, and I wish someone would put the full game up.

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 17 лет назад +2

    What is there to "clear up"? Jordan played Kobe when he was 34+ years old. Unless you're one of those guys who thinks Kobe dropped 42 points in the first half on Jordan in 2003 when Jordan didn't guard him a single possession of that half lol.

    Bird had Mchale Parish Dennis Johnson. Magic had Kareem, Cooper, Worthy, Scott. Jordan had Oakley who was a good rebounder and defender. But the bulls had no real second option. Even though they had John Paxson, he didn't see many minutes and his scoring output was limited. It wasn't until the 88-89 Season that Jordan's teammates started getting real productive and as a result of that, plus putting Jordan at point guard, Jordan averaged 8 rb 8 as. and 32 pts, getting quite a few triple doubles.

    Jordan had to score because although Pippen became one of the best players ever, it's not like in 1987 he just came in dominating (like jordan did his rookie year). In fact Pippen had to fight for playing time against Brad Sellars. Pippen didn't start emerging till 1989 and even then it was a couple years till he really got recognized during the Bulls first Championship run. Bird and Magic always had better teammates during the early 80s and more of them.

    Assuming I'm not misinterpreting anything here because ur stats appear to be in sequential order, I'd very much appreciate it if u posted that third '86 playoff game as it's a special accomplishment to post up back-to-back-to-back 40+-pt games Vs the '86 Celtics. I'd been under the impression he'd been held to 28 pts in that third game all along.

  • @Christien23
    @Christien23 17 лет назад

    Hoops, I notice in posting Jordan's scoring totals Vs the Celtics from 1985-1990 u listed "48" following "49" n "63", which indicates that he torched the Celtics for a third straight game in the 1986 first round. Having seen Games 1 n 2 posted by u, this comes as a shock to me because I had no idea Jordan continued where he left off with the playoff scoring record.

  • @det916
    @det916 17 лет назад

    Not to mention in the game that Jordan posted 36, and Kobe 33... Kobe did literally 60% of his scoring while Jordan was benched. 16 in the 4th when the game was long over.
    BTW, in the 63 vs Celtics, you should've posted Bird's huge 3 point buzzer beater. That was awesome :)

    Another article:
    Bird was whistled for a technical by referee Dan Crawford in the fourth quarter when he was knocked down by Oakley and no foul was called.
    ``I really felt like hitting the referee,'' Bird admitted. ``They (the Bulls) were taking cheap shots at me all night. When I got hammered in that fourth quarter, and no foul was called, I really wanted to hit Crawford. I rarely get angry. I get frustrated. But there was no excuse for letting Bulls' players get away with murder."

I noted one steal (in terms of collecting the deflection by Sam Vincent) and I confirmed MJ's block around the 3:25ish mark. Michael does deflect a pass late in this video that was not fully secured so I don't think it was credited to anyone but if you had all 5 steals he was credited with, we can sink the article.

    I love when people say stuff like this. Have you never watched sports? Just lining up great players does not equate to wins. That's how you make a fantasy squad.
    Quick question: who was the best player on the Yankee's all-time winningest team? Ruth? DiMaggio? Mantle? Nope, it was Bernie Williams.

    Yeah but despite the fact that Jordan was a supposed gunner earlier in his career didn't negate that he was still able to post 50 win season w/o great teammates.

    Scittie played in 208 playoff games, Michael 179.
    Michael averaged 2.1 steals in his playoff career, Scottie 1.9.

    Isiah Thomas's coaching record is 147-67? That doesn't sound right. I think you thought I was talking about Larry Bird. Larry Bird was a very good coach.

    Sorry! I forgot to add Balthus23 to this list too. TRJ22487--I call him "the Cape Cod Cameraman"--has also posted some great games by Jordan. Anyone else that's posted Jordan games on the Internet, message me and I'll give a shout out to you too.
