    86-87 Blazers was an incredible offensive team. Led by Kiki Vandeweghe and Clyde Drexler, a total of seven players averaged in double figures in scoring that year. (This is probably an NBA record shared with the Showtime Lakers and maybe some other teams. But since I didn't have a chance to look it up I can't say I'm 100% sure). Considering the Bulls roster that year it was almost a necessity for Jordan to have a high scoring game in order for Chicago to have a chance.
    Playing partly on small forward, Jordan started the game with ultra-high intensity. With jumpers and drives he first got Drexler into foul trouble, then Jerome Kersey. Finished with 53 points on 20-34 (59%) shooting. Also assisted big baskets at the end and came up with a clean block to seal the game in the crunch even though a bogus foul was called. 53 was his regular season-career high at that time.
    There was a small problem in the original broadcast and that is at the beginning of the second half, the announcers faced a technical problem and it was fixed halfway through the 4th quarter. So, in that period there's no commentary but everything is pretty obvious, so it shouldn't be a major problem I think.
    Enjoy.
    Post game notes & quotes:
    ===========================
    CHICAGO - How long can the Air Jordan fly-and-drive show continue to run?
    Michael Jordan stepped "forward" last night to show what a bargain he really is, scoring a regular season career-high 53 points in the Bulls' 121-117 victory over Portland.
    His 53 were the most points scored by a Bulls' player at the Stadium since Chet Walker's 56 on Feb. 6, 1972. It was the 19th time this season Jordan has scored 40 or more.
    He did it while playing an unusually-high 43 minutes, many at small forward. He did it because he refused to sit for his normal amount of time.
    It's great theater now, but the season is not yet half over.
    "A lot of people say to pace yourself, but I'm not a pacer," Jordan said. "If I burn out, I burn out. But when I play, I play hard."
    Jordan is averaging 40.2 minutes a game, which is a bit more than Collins would like.
    But Collins also would like his team to win, thus the temptation to over-use Jordan.
    "I went into the season thinking I'd like to play him 36 to 38 minutes a game, leaning toward 38," Collins said.
    Jordan sat for only 2 1/2 minutes in the first half, then two minutes at the start of the fourth quarter.
    Jordan took himself out temporarily with 10 1/2 minutes left.
    "I just couldn't get my wind," Jordan said. "I like to be rested at the end of the quarter. I was feeling good, but I needed a quick breather."
    The Bulls led 2-0 and not again until Oakley hit a long shot to make it 98-97 with 8 1/2 minutes left. The first three-point lead was 104-101 - on a Jordan jumper.
    Taking advantage of being double teamed, Jordan passed to three teammates, resulting in six key points. Including the assists on baskets by Brad Sellers, John Paxson and Charles Oakley.
    His jump shot was working last night, mostly because he spent so much time at forward.
    "I was getting the ball in great scoring position," he said. "When I play a lot of forward, I can post up but I got the outside shot a lot. The defense was giving me the outside shot because of my (quick) first step."
    Collins saw the consequences on Portland. "He got (Jerome) Kersey in foul trouble and (Clyde) Drexler in foul trouble. They had to play Caldwell Jones more than they wanted to."
    How good was Jordan last night?
    "I thought it was the best game he's played all season," said Collins.
    "Naw, I think the first Milwaukee game up at Milwaukee," Jordan said. "I didn't score as many, but as a team we played well."
    Portland Coach Mike Schuler said Jordan has continued to improve and is tough to defend. "You can't just run at him when you get the ball. He'll just go right around you, but we had no choice except trying to double and triple-team him,"
    "He gives you problems everywhere and the whole league is trying to figure out how to defense him. You ask me the best way to defense him, it's when Doug takes him out."
    Doug Collins can be forgiven for not wanting to take out Jordan.
    "Michael's an energetic guy. If he weren't playing basketball, he'd be out running around, shooting pool or something," Collins said. "You have to chain him to the bench."

    I cant overstate how nasty and unstoppable MJ was when he was young & on his game. His moves are so graceful,precise, ingenius. Speed bursts you expect only from guys 6'2" &under.
    The FG%s he hit in his prime were absurd for a nonCenter/PF. Kobe is an imitation, but nowhere near as great; none playing today are.
    Huge thanks go out to the maker of this vid, hadnt seen this game before.

      @@houstonsherfey4721 yea there are insane skills/traits he possessed that flew under the radar of many fans due to their awe of his high flying style...his ballhandling skills and quickness were as high end as, if not higher than, any iverson like little guy or pgs were...some of the crossovers he used to split double teams and traps with are nastier/better than anything ive ever seen isiah iverson hardaway curry or kyrie do tbh...idc what their dribbling drills before tipoff look like or how many times they can put it thru their legs while the defender steps back and gets bored enough to get slightly careless or risky and get burnt...i care if u can take the ball away from them with a dbl team and/or stop them dead in tracks with a decent trap...Kawhi Leonard for example in the 2019 finals yes his team won but everytime a trap or a firm dbl team went his way it pressured him to have2use his left hand to dribble and he struggled with that had to pick up his dribble pretty much every single time sometimes turned it over and on other occasions barely managed to pass it away without turning it over...mj circa 1985-1993 blew past/thru those traps and any imperfect dbl team efforts like they didnt even exist and routinely displayed/applied his best/flashiest dribbling skills and crossover moves while doing so.

    MJ didnt hit 54% from the field during the86-87 reg season, but he did score 37+ppg at close to 50%, which is still absolutely insane considering the diffficult nature of his midair circus moves combined with the energy being expended collecting those 200+steals and 100+swats...MJ did hit 53 or 54% a year or 2 later while scoring around 35ppg and he did also get another 200+steal100+swat yr.Kobe is todays best, and he aint close to this, altho you can tell he has done a good job of studying MJ

    MJ was the best to watch, especially when he was real young and a 1-man machine in the 80's....... amazing. To shoot over 50% field goals while being almost your whole teams offense and through triple teams and everything takinig so many attempts and averaging 37 ppg...... amazing.

    And the entire sequence from 3:36-3:41 shows why his concentration is without equal. Double-teamed, losing his footing and falling yet still maintaining the dribble against reaching hands, going between his legs and playing with the ball a bit while guys are swiping at it, and then having the vision and concentration to make the right pass under that kind of duress. Amazing. People have no idea. Look how he keeps that ball alive and stays under composure!

    I've seen this billed as "MJ scores 53 on Clyde Drexler" but that's a little inaccurate, since only 18 of the 53 were scored when Clyde was guarding him. Of course, that's because MJ got Clyde in foul trouble early. When Clyde was actually in the game, he played MJ pretty well. But nobody ever really stopped either of those guys.
    In this game, MJ took a page out of Drexler's book and scored a large % of his points in transition, maybe more than I've ever seen from him. Great game.

    must admit this Jordan had some hangtime, can see him lead the league in scoring easily with his natural athleticism and quickness, but seems like Players are bigger and stronger today in general, even the average joe in the western world who works out, probably due to all the proteins and muscle enhancements, plus trainers who know all about workingo ut. Trust me I notice it all the times after being out the States for sometime and upon my return when I land I notice giants and it seems like im in a gladiator world coming from other countries where working out (pumpin) is not practiced as much.
    So the point is that anyone who has played against a much stronger player knows that it's much more physcial and they wear you out, on top playing defense against them is a nightmare because they just bulldoze you over, perfect example of how lebron changed the game. So the game has evolved, even steph curry is swolled up. Players like Westbrook and Lebron would do a lot of damage in the 80's, , an exception was Karl Malone who was a player with a built from this era, and that the was mid 90's mailman , D-Rob was pure muscles..

    • @AstriBlair
      @AstriBlair 8 лет назад +1

      +muslimman30 But you see with the way MJ is playing, he would get to the foul line in no time every game. His mid range game is up to par as well. Very accurate shooter, has high vertical which is almost unblockable. If Jordan in his prime was inserted hypothetically in today's game in his prime? Physicality wouldn't be a problem. Jordan dunked on Patrick Ewing, 240 pounds and 7 foot tall. Lebron is just 10 lbs. heavier and Ewing is 2 inches taller. Guess what? Jordan is more dominant than Ewing. And ofcourse, inserted in today's game as a rookie with his skills and natural talent, Modern training methods will be available as well for MJ thus conditioning him much more. 40 PPG would be no problemo.

    • @muslimman30
      @muslimman30 8 лет назад

      +AstriBlair Yea true but that can't use that Jordan dunking on Ewing analogy, what I meant by that was having to guard someone one on one for 48 mins, who is just as quick as you but a lot heavier. With Jordan dunking on Ewing that is just someone waiting for you under the basket and you just fly over him. Without a doubt I consider MJ to be the best, most consistent mid range shooter of all time. But to say he would score 40 a game, not sure realisticly IMO mabye 32-34 ppg. At the moment I am going crazy; fuming (cavs fan) over how Steph Curry is destroying the league. Just don't get it, the only type of player that I cant think of stopping him would be someone like Kevin Durant, someone long to bother his shots..

    • @AstriBlair
      @AstriBlair 8 лет назад +1

      +muslimman30 40 a game is very close. Atleast for Michael Jordan. Remember this era was where you had to pay the price for driving in the lanes. Jordan frequently got punished by the Detroit Pistons each time he drove, having 2-3 men try to swipe the ball resulting in very physical fouls to MJ while still dropping 35-40 points. In today's game, MJ would totally dominate. He got post game, quickest first step during his prime. He would score on the floor at will. Today's defense against him with both arms needed to almost be up in the air when someone drives, and knowing how improvisational and powerful MJ is with the ball at either the mid-range, running the baseline and beyond the arc, its not really a proble for MJ to score 40 or atleast average near it. Remember, this guy scored 63 points on the Celtics. Not a pushover defensive team. Today's league has many talent no doubt, but you know how MJ can be, both in-game and mentally. His athleticism has diminished during his wizard years which is when the rules of today applied and he still is averaging and almost led the league back then, what more during his prime when he literally flabbergasted thousands of people each night.

      NBA has no defense in paint today, because all players are going to shoot the 3, if MJ was in this era, he could easily drive and score everyday.
      As for muscles, they started weight training in 90s, you can see 90s' MJ had bigger muscles, as well as other players.
      The fact is, players were a little taller and heavier in 90s than 2000s. Today's league average height is lower than old days.
