Michael Jordan 1993: 64 pts Vs. Shaq & Orlando Magic

  • MJ welcomed Shaq's first visit to Chicago with one of his classic statement games. Shaq's fanfare as the next great player meant MJ had to assert his supreme dominance yet again. Having an injured shooting wrist, MJ practiced lefty jumpers before the game. But as usual, an injured MJ was usually a deadlier MJ and he broke 60 points without needing a three because his already unmatchable mid-range game was raised to absurd proportions. Unfortunately for MJ, with the game close and going to OT, Horace Grant committed a crucial turnover in the last minute which made his performance go to waste. But the statement was made.

    How on Earth can people say Kobe Bryant is a better shooter than MJ? I'm in my 40's - I watched Jordan. Even when he scored 37 PPG in 87, 22 or 24 of them were off of jumpers, and he's a career 50% FG. End of discussion.

    • @mdjiles
      @mdjiles 10 лет назад +4

      Kobe is. He's better from outside, and while it's obvious he modeled his game after Jordan, his post work is also better than Jordan. Jordan was the better player, but Kobe is a better shooter. You have to take into account the different defensive rules as well.

    • @Theoriginalcg
      @Theoriginalcg 10 лет назад +16

      Marcus Jiles MJ's post work is almost Hakeem-Worthy. It's not like Kobe is a scrub, he just ain't Mike when it comes to post work. Kobe is an amazing scorer with better range, but MJ's array of moves is what separates him. I've seen him do so many different things on the way to 64 points in this video.

      Marcus Jiles MJ had arguably the best mid-range game of all-time. While Kobe is definitely the better pure-shooter, his post-game is nothing compared to Jordan's. MJ could score from the post on anybody.

      I don't know whether to laugh at you dumb kobetards, or feel sorry for your obvious stupidity.
      Pay attention kiddo and learn something.
      1st Point of Reference:
      "Jordan was the type who'd [get position] in the [post] and [hold it]. He's one of the [greatest] post weapons in the [history] of the game, despite the fact he wasn't a post player. He was a great post-up scorer. Kobe just [doesn’t quite] have the same [strength] or [center of gravity]. He's a fine post-up player, but gets [shoved off] the block [a lot easier] than Michael [ever did].”
      -- Tex Winter, creator of the Triangle Offense: "MJ: The Life"; by Roland Lazenby, 2011
      2nd Point of Reference:
      "Michael's [interior game] was probably [par none]. There's [nobody] that's [ever] been a better [inside player] at his level, in this game. And that's [including Oscar], who was very good down in the low post too"
      -- Phil Jackson

    • @LofiSamurai11
      @LofiSamurai11 9 лет назад +4

      keigorjai01 1. Unlike MJ, 3pt shooting has always been a staple in Kobe's game and he's still less efficient at it. Per Basketball Reference, MJ's career 3pt FG% is .327 which rounds to 33% and Kobe has .333 which also rounds to 33%. Accounting for the seasons where they've attempted a career high in 3pt attempts MJ attempted 3.6 threes per game and hit them at .374 in the 96-97 season which equals 37% while Kobe attempted 6.5 threes in the 05-06 season and hit them at .344 which equals 34%. Kobe's % isn't bad but it's far less efficient. 2. Mj's career high 3PT FG% is .427 which equals 48% while Kobe's(excluding rookie season) is .361 which equals 36%. 3. Kobe averages 4.0 threes a game for his career while MJ averages half that amount(1.7 to be exact equaling 2.0) and still shoots roughly the same % as Kobe. Kobe's percentages aren't terrible but he isn't a better shooter than MJ when really he just shoots more of them so it creates the image that he's better when he in fact isn't. MJ played in an era where the 3pt shor was viewed as an inefficient shot and athletes made full use of their IQ and talents to score. He never made the game harder than it had to be. Why shoot from 20-23 feet when you can score at the rim at will? MJ is a better shooter. He even stated that he never wanted be known as a 3pt shooter because it took away from other areas of his game. Kobe shoots threes more because he built that mentality into himself because of his need to shoot. He's not afraid to shoot, sure but he makes the game way harder on himself than even he knows.

    Because the thing that made MJ the best ever was his ability to take his incomparable desire to win, and have that factor into his performance at some point in each and every game. He worked incredibly hard outside of games because of his competitive nature so that when the time came, he could win games, regardless of who his teammates were.

    I have to thank you for that info, i didnt know about that Elgin's finals performance as well as most before 80s. And now knowing this and those sick Jerry West's performances, Kobe will really have a tough time being considered even the Laker's GOAT... they had Magic and Shaq too.

    another perfect example of why/how MJ is the G.O.A.T.
    he scored 64 pts against Shaq who's one of the top 10 greatest players of all time. top 5 arguably at his position. (even though he was a rookie here). majority of Jordan's high scoring games were against teams with Hall Of Famer's on it.

    @mark03cobra You are right....Jordan said that the rims at the United Center were very stiff, especially on the right side of the court.

    Used to watch Bulls games all the time. I was so upset when they blacked this game out on WGN. Couldn't believe i missed a classic when I watched SportsCenter the next day and say MJ had 64 pts.

    @wannam01 and even though every play you've seen where players are grabbing his jersey are of them getting lit up, still doesnt take away from the fact it would've been extremly difficult for him to get open. That's just the greatness of Michael Jordan.

    WAS this game ON MARCH OR JANUARY?
    BECAUSE THE AIR JORDAN 7'S THAT CAME OUT SAY MARCH 4 1993 64 POINTS ON THE TONGUE AND SOME PEOPLE ARE SAYING THAT THE DATE IS WRONG....SOMEONE LET ME KNOW

    The hand-check rules and the lack of hard contact made the numbers he got astounding. Watch Shaq's foul at 4:14 - nowadays that's a flagrant. He went through 13 seasons with that level of contact, night in and night out - and averaged 30.1 PPG. It's a different universe now.

    He's the G.O.A.T. Any playmaker today, obviously made themselves better by learning from the mistakes of the greatest of all time, including Lebron. Yeah Jordan jacked 49 shots, but the name of the game is gettin buckets. Professional ballers in it for the win. They know that, the whole association knows that. Jordan May have taken away some of their shot attempts, but helped them get rings. I'd take that trade any day of the week. They're champs, nothin can beat that

  • @chitownref
    @chitownref 12 лет назад

    You're welcome. Yea it will be hard for anyone to catch up to some of the legends on that list, especially Lebrick. Jerry West was a helluva shooter who is forgotten because he wasnt a high flying guy like MJ but he was deadly and I would have him on my team anyday!!

    Shaq and Duncan both started in the 90s, though. As did Kobe, Garnett, Ray Allen, Kidd,etc. Shaq was already dominating by the mid-late 90s and was part of the great group of centers the 90s had in Ewing, Hakeem, David Robinson, Mouring, Mutombo,etc.

    You're forgetting Jordan actually played since "basketball has evolved so much" with the wizards. He was still one of the better scorers in the league far past his prime, in a time when he should have been retired.

    Man, there was a rookie on the Magic this game named Shaq.
    I think he got something like 29/24/2ass/1steal/5blocks this game and the bulls lost. 49 shots for 64 points is damned great. You'd need at least 70% FG if he wasn't touching the 3 in order to outscore a team.
