Michael Jordan 1988: 39pts, "Leaner Dunk Game" vs. Sonics

- These very rare off-shooting nights were my favorite nights during this young-MJ era; the reason being that I didn't want MJ shooting jumpers back then - I wanted to see hang-time, triple-clutch, one-handed drives with the nonpareil body control and finesse. I wanted to see him rely on his singular athleticism because chances were greater that something spectacular was going to happen. And just like that, with the game on the line, MJ pulled off the insane fast-break leaner to close the deal. Even with the off night, the numbers were monstrous and to catch that one move that only he could do was why you watched.
What I'm most amazed about is his unreal quickness on that last play defensively. Legit catlike reflexes!
5:35 for the dunk. You're welcome.
Michael Jordan was able to fly. That last dunk is just incredible. Never seen any other player with such skills and grace. Simply the GOAT
man...that leaner dunk at the end is a thing of beauty
The Holy Grail of Jordan's the Air Jordan 3 88's with Nike Air on the heel
Daamn!! That leaner Dunk! Definitely ah Fitting way to end ah game! Love the guy! Loved his style and even to this day, still amazes me with what he does on court!
Just look at the way the crowd jumped to its feet when MJ stole the rock at the end...They knew it was buckle up poster time in Chicago Stadium!
yes
Dam look where he took off from, That looked like something from the Dunk contest!
Those AJ III's...so sick. Mike looked so good in his Jordans man. Wide laced, the socks, everything.
No one EVER looked as good in his signature shoes as Mike. Those 3's are sooo fresh!!
Thanks for posting these games, you forget just how smooth he was.
The elevation off that jumpshot attempt at 4:37 is insane! He just floats up and up!
Thanks for uploading this!
Michael Jordan was one the most athletic basketball players at that time. He had an incredible 48 inch vertical leap and his body fat was around 4 percent. Super athlete. That leaning dunk was incredible.
33ppg and 53% fg, thats just ridiculous dude
gocelts34n7 He finished the year at 35 PPG on 53% fg and won the MVP and DPOTY awards.
Happy new year hoops! Thanks again for the upload!
Gosh I remember watching and recording some of these cable TBS telecast on a cheap TV back in the late 80's. Back then Jordan had more acrobatic artistry to create shots or get by defenders through sheer youthfulness. His moves got even better when he got into his prime. Watching his moves is what got me and probably others captivated as to how he would somehow make it to the basket and a lot of the times he'd make circus shots go in.
Hoops' channel my favorite one I subscribe to. That last dunk was dunk contest material. I love how he leans into the it!
another awesome upload Hoops. thanks a bundle and keep these classic games comin :)
i just got a new computer so now i can finally see hoopsencyclopedia great jordan videos clearrrrrrr....wow
what i would do to go back in time and witness the greatest player in the world again...
Awesome! Thank you so much for this great video.
Thanks for uploading this!!!!
at 4:33, Air Jordan jumped so high that it is hard to block the ball....unbelivable!
wow the double clutch "jumping jump shot where he changes direction" haha. you dont see that.. the best there ever was. love these classic mj vids, could watch them all day
good to see you again hoops thanks for your videos
Damn look how far he took off sheeeeesh
you truly are a youtube legend
Beautiful Dunk!!!
GOAT
that leaner windmill dunk is just too nice
I remember when all programs on TBS began at :05 after the hour!
even his misses look like highlights to me. unbelievable player- the greatest- just watching him move is a marvel, so fluid and smooth and graceful, lebron looks like a clumsy footballer in compairson , a freak but no grace, or elegance, and kobe just didnt have the flair.
they shoud of kept the 1st camera angle were u see the flight time in real motion..if eye am not mistaken MJ stated himself in an interview awhile back that this very dunk was his all time in game best!
I'll recommend your channel to anyone who wants to know why Michael Jordan was as great as he was; they will also be instructed to read the video descriptions.
MJ 'touched by heaven'.
5:35 That was classic.
@brian05fubu lol those are Playstation numbers! He was that deal!
Jordan is way too nasty for his time!
R.I.P Seattle Supersonics. ):
thanks for this sick video!
that last dunk was sick
He ended the game with beautifully ✨💯...
awesome as always hoops
5:34 oh so thats how he got his nickname :HIS AIRNESS
Nice.
y cant anybody in the nba nowadays do that double clutch fadeaway thats slowmoed in the beginning? i figure somebody's gotta be able to, but it just hasnt been done.
@sportstalk23 The Dream got his 2 rings because MJ was off playing baseball.
@sportstalk23 that's not even considering the fact that had michael not retired for those two seasons, hakeem, in all probability, would never have won his.
It is a huge difference, considering the eras and the not so subtle changes to the game. Jordan attempted more shots, while 3pt attempts and free-throws are a bigger part of Kobe's and perimeter players in this era. You would expect Kobe's TS% to be much higher. The fact that Jordan's is .015 higher is HUGE. In theory shooting 33% from 3 = 50% inside, but your'e still only scoring 1 out of 3 times down the court. I'm pretty certain the leagues TS% is higher than it's ever been from 2005 on.
@DudeThe23 true, but the 92 team was on pace for 70W early on in the season against a much stronger league IMO.
very awesome
Some great perimeter scorers ts % since 3 pt line era:
(FGA+(FTA*.5) per36 min)
Iverson:.518 (23.0)*
T-mac:.519! (21.1)
Nique:536 (23.9)
VC:.536 (22.0)
Aguirre:.542 (22.5)
Drexler.547 (19.7)
Arenas:.547 (20.3)
Kobe:.554 (23)
Richmond:.557 (19.6)
Redd:.558 (19.5)
Wade:566 (22)
Lebron:.569 (22.4)
Pierce:569 (19.5)
Jordan:.569 (25.3)
Not only does MJ manage to create more shots, but retains a very high percentage without relying on the 3 point line.*04'-08 a declining Iverson TS% was aprx .540
im speechless.
thank god people like you are around to end any discussion of lebron or kobe being mjs equal. watch any video and the discussion ends there
MJ personally calls that the "Kiss the Rim" dunk.
Man he,d hang forever, and do like 3 pumps
@Smeagollum86 Increase the volume of your speakers!
Ahhhhhh I love how Jordan makes it look so fun and easy...None of todays players are even interesting to me anyway...I love the game but I hate the players of today they are too cocky and arrogant...smh
If i had a dunk package i'd mix VC and MJ. :)
NBA? This is the real NBA over here......
1:56... i'd like to see someone put those numbers up in a week these days
His airness...
Mike said himself that last dunk was his best ever in a game
Mike dont know what the hell he talking about lol
This was considered one of MJ's "weaker" games in that 86-87 Season. Try and wrap your head around that
Defense. My Name is Michael .
just me or no sound? great vid nonetheless
I like the 90s Jordan cause he shot more jumpers.
The y are "close" because of the Wizards seasons.
@ArmenianAssassin yeah i hate it when theres a great dunk coming and they switch the angle.. even today
17-20 free throws.
sweet! MJ IS THE GOAT
but man, bad shooting performance
atleast the teams that were considered bottom feeders played D back then. the nba today has an elite 8-9 teams that can actually compete with one another. the rest of the teams are pitiful, due to the market in that city. its not the teams fault- who would wanna live/play in places like cleveland, detroit, sac.? only recently have we seen teams grab 3+ all-stars in hopes of actually competing. poor jerry sloan is an example of someone who tried to make something out of nothing.
@oDDmahnsta kobe's done it
me too !!!
classic
@brian05fubu lol yea thats absolutely insane
Hardly see steal like that and lean dunk on final seconds.
@DudeThe23 all through the 90"s the NBA was way watered down.
jiujitsujedi I know this is old but the 90's were watered down? Wtf are you talking about? The league has been watered down post 2000. The eastern conference was terrible the first 11 years of the millennium. 2 great teams. 04 pistons and 08 Celtics and neither team could win it more than once. The Lakers were great the Spurs very good and then who else? The cavs and warriors are a given for the finals every year basically. They'll probably be in their 4th straight finals. No competition at all.
@sportstalk23 mj is not the goat?
1:12. That was not a foul! LOL!
when did Xavier McDaniel foul Jordan?? Ref called it after a miss, that was gay!!
Leaner
oh considering FT's eh? makes you look desperate to crown kobe as GOAT i see...
One person is a biotch.
