CAT D10 Dozer Cylinder Rebuild | Part 2 | Making the New Barrel

  • Опубликовано: 7 авг 2024
  • This video is part 2 of rebuilding a Caterpillar D10R dozer blade tilt hydraulic cylinder. In this episode we are machining, welding and honing to make the new cylinder barrel. We start with machining a piece of 10 ¾” x 9 ¼” Unhoned steel tube to prep it for the head flange and barrel end cap. We then fit and metal core weld the head flange onto the new barrel before finish honing the internal diameter using our Delapena vertical honing machine. The barrel end is positioned on the barrel and tack welded in place. We then make up the barrel torque tube using a piece of hollow bar. We cut the length of hollow bar to size in our horizontal bandsaw and then set it up in our lathe. We turn down the outer diameter before preparing for welding by machining and boring each end of the tube. The torque tube is positioned on the barrel and tack welded in place. We then finish up with metal core welding the end cap and torque tube on to the barrel.

In this video we are using:
    - TM-26120G Centre Lathe
    - WIA 500i Weldmatic welder
    - Everising H-360HA horizontal bandsaw

I’ve just watched a 40 plus minute video on a subject I know absolutely nothing about but enjoyed every bit of it- well, except the adds which I don’t give a shit about. Actually, I suffered through those with the hope it helps monetarily for you guys. But, television shows, as a whole, are full of crap and are generally unsatisfying. But, I thoroughly enjoy this content. I don’t truly understand a lot of what or why things are done, despite Kurtis’ succinct explanations, but it I’m learning. Thank you for the videos. Even worse, back before they invented the HSS tool blank you had to forge, quench, temper and grind your own carbon steel tools. Then make a cut at painfully low speed to avoid annealing the edge.

Another great video. I bet the wife spends a bit of time and effort on the editing. But not to worry, your acting isn't the focus of the video. The content is great and well presented. The bloopers show just how much time you all put into it. The welding fast forward and operation were excellent. Love the real feel of your shop. Homeless fills in all the blanks. I get a kick out of your honing center, I bought a Sunnen hone set thirty years ago, to do motorcycle cylinders, still got it, never knew they did such a big setup. My bores are four inch and smaller. Really enjoy watching you work, top notch all the way! you do a good job in dealing with welding in the lathe, I've had to do it a couple times, and always with great caution, much smaller lathe though. I've learned a new appreciation for that four way tool post, you get a lot of good utility out of it, makes me wish I were in the same hemisphere and could visit your shop.

Waited to watch quite a few videos before I commented, and coming from a guy that went to school for machine tool and die and was a welder/fabricator for 15 + years and now I run heavy equipment and run a small maintenance crew for my local county government, I must say Kurtis your a FIRST CLASS welder and machinist! Your skill set makes for awesome content. I would like to know more about your back story, for example how you got your start and how you started your business and acquiring your equipment and I think that would make a very interesting video for the people that really enjoy your videos.
