Repair DAMAGED Hydraulic Cylinder for CAT 651 Scraper | Part 1
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 апр 2021
- This video is Part 1 of repairing a damaged hydraulic cylinder for a Caterpillar 651 Scraper wheel tractor. This is the Apron lift cylinder on the machine and has been damaged by something causing massive amounts of scratching inside the barrel and on the piston. In this part 1 video we start with the old cylinder barrel and set up in our lathe for machining out the welds to remove the barrel end and head flange. We use welding on the head flange and heat with flame torch to expand and remove. The head flange needs to be bored out, built up with weld and then machined out to suit the new barrel tube. We then set up the new steel tube in the lathe for machining the outer diameter and boring out the inner diameter to match OEM standard and interference fit for head flange. We then measure and drill in oil port holes into the new barrel and heat up with flame torch ready for interference fitting the head flange.
In this video we are using:
- TM-26120G Lathe
- BM-63VE Milling machine
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

Great video 👍 nice to see how you do things.
Looking forward to part 2 😀
Cliffhanger? Was waiting for that one word we all know so well... and use so often... As for rain, come up to EffenQ, we'll show you rain...
now we have to wait to see if you got it all in the hole instead of......... just the tip
I am an old fucker with no guarantee of another week. So, I would like to have a midweek video from you. Australia was on my bucket list, now, it is too late. It is 05:25 here. I was up for a pee. I am going back to sleep for a few hours. Great video.
Feliz pascoa from Brazil to all.
Kurtis you're such a genius - had me scratching my head no end when you welded those zigzags at the bore!
I will never work on this machine, change o-rings that big or work on heavy equipment. But I cant stop watching!!!
Right!
Totally! Also the safety officer is adorable.
Hahaa nice one mate thanks for watching 😎👍
Silver cymbal
It’s alright. You don’t have what it takes to handle the big ones. 😬
Watching metal lathe work is almost therapeutic to watch
Good work my friend
Im not sure why I love this stuff but I do. My HS guidance teacher said I should have been a machinist. 40 years ago it was too finite for me. I ended up being an electrician by chance. Took all the shop classes except electrical in HS and then. 40yrs later and now Im geeking on machining at home and at work. Loved your vid and scribed
What better way to start the morning than with a video from carl ehhhh kurtis. Thanks from the Netherlands!
🤣🤣🤣 shit that name is stuck now haha thanks for watching mate
😂
+1 from the Netherlands!
Been stuck in hospital for almost a month now and absolutely love these CEE videos, they've really made the days pass quicker. Was a long time Abom79 fan but the production quality of these videos is absolutely gold standard.
Hey David hope you're doing alright mate! Thanks for watching the vids glad they're keeping you entertained. Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
Abom stopped working and changed from a machining channel to an advertisement channel. It was so good and now mostly sucks...

At least - I hope - he still has his old videos to still enjoy ...
... fortunately RUclips has added a function whereby you can start from oldest to newest ...
... so it's like seeing S1 of your favourite show, before it went to shit ...
As I sit here eating supper and watching this, thank you for giving explanations on not just what you are doing but also what you are seeing and answers on to why it could be doing it.
I want to thank you guys. I watch your videos while I’m at work and they’re oddly hypnotic and relaxing. I’m probably not alone in feeling that way. Before I know it my day is over and I’m on my way home. Hat’s off to both of you…and Homey. I love that you feed the birds too - shows your hearts are in the right place.
Your channel is the best photographed and best organised of all the machining sites on RUclips. Great work and great craftsmanship!
Hey Alex thanks mate really appreciate the great comment! 😎👍

Indeed the Mrs is an awesome cameraperson. Very good clear closeups, slo mo shots, steady footage, clear audio, very professional.
@@jtveg Awesome produced video 😊😊👍
I agree, cutting edge engineering and fireball tool have really taken the show for me. Amazing craftsmanship skills, you can always learn something and get a good laugh from their videos
@@jtveg Indeed. I just wonder, upon seeing 10:00 - is she also a rain lover? Or just _that_ dedicated to the work of showing the context for all this?!? Either way, fun stuff. (And in the former case, I bet that was a fun excursion! :) )
These are the best videos, without much talk and without music, everything shown very precisely.
I'm already looking forward to the second Part.
Very professional
Greetings from Germany
Thanks mate! Appreciate the great comment 😎👍
You have just made me home sick, I used to have a workshop in Coomera and the rain on the roof used to drive me nuts, but now I live in California and it’s only spring and we are in a drought. That sound of the rain is now music to me. Keep up the good work guys
Hey mate when did you move over there!? We're not far from Coomera. Thanks for watching 😎👍
outstanding work Kurtis. Thanks for the Out takes, now we can see you are a human, and not a Robot! Cheers.
After seeing your bloopers I realize that we have something in common. We both have no filters.
What the fucks a filter? 😂👍
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering I ask the same question.
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Kurtis...PLEASE...watch your punctuation! There is an apostrophe between the "fuck" and the "s" because it's a contraction. "What the fuck is a filter" becomes "what the fuck's a filter?" Could be kids reading this so you have to set a proper example for fuck sake!

Hey mate thanks for watching you should definitely make it a hobby!
Every time I see these vids I think "This man is a star infront of the camera." But then, the bloopers appear and I think "What on earth is wrong with this dude?" Every fucking time. It's hilarious 😂

I'm just going to paws a moment to applaud and acknowledge the diligent efforts of everyone's favorite four-legged safety officer. Who knows how many time's he's saved Kurtis' bacon? Well done, fuzzy one, well done.
The Safety Officer appreciates this comment from his loyal fan and says you may carry on!
Except from rain. Anything but rain.
Homey is a lovely safety officer.
I love the out takes at the end. It shows the true frustration of working in a shop.... Shit happens and sometimes you just fu*k up.
Enjoyed the sound of the rain, rather relaxing.
Thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Mate, It's a pleasure to watch a Master Machinist!
Appreciate it thanks for always watching 😎👍
I love the little nod when hes finished telling you what he's doing.
I'm not a machinist, nor do I own a Catepillar, I don't do anything that has anything to do with this channel, but I truly enjoy watching a calm Aussie do tings in the workshop, I have binged most of your videos by now.
Great footage, just enough talking, no music, and occasional dog apperance, I love it!

Hi where about are you based ?
Just curious have a buddy in mount crosby nr Brisbane
I think you did all this excellent work so you wouldn't have to listen to the deafening rain.
I watch quite a few machining channels and this channel is one of the most professional ones I have found. Amazing work!
Kurtis, I really have to hand it to you, the machining is first class but what caps it all is the time and effort you put into the commentary - the filming and editing speaks for itself, also first class.
Hey Fred! Your comments never disappoint. Seriously appreciate it mate, glad you enjoy the vids and what we are sharing. Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
Well said.
I'm a Gas fitter and a coded welder I enjoy your videos, Good stuff.
Loved the cliff hanger. Also love the way you show Kurtis as human in the outtakes.
hey Kurtis. Are you alone in this company! What do you have for schools, engineering education, you know everything I see no problems at all no matter how difficult they are, Just a big CONGRATULATIONS is a joy to see you work ..💖👌
Great question, I'd love to know also
It's good to see the results of someone who really knows what they are doing, yes another great video. You do just great as well Kurtis.
Don’t know why I like watching this stuff. Have never been a machinist. I guess I just find it fascinating.
Must be a tremendously satisfying job.
And thanks to the video person too, whomever that is. Great job.
Thanks mate appreciate the comment glad you are enjoying the vids. My missus does the camera work and editing she says thank you!
Watching the big boring bar pay for itself! Ear scratchies for Homey!
I love some button insert action with rain sounds! Let the chips fly!!
Thanks for watching mate enjoy the vid 😎👍
An engineer with the precision of a Jeweller. Fascinating to “watch”.
Hey Mark thanks for always watching cheers 😎👍
Like a Boss! loved the MIG beads inside to shrink the tube, and the way it came out without the usual grunting!
I'm a mechanic by trade, but im fixated with this channel, i can't stop watching !!
Customer: Can you please explain, why this needs repairs?
Kurtis: It needs repairs, 'cuz it's fucked.
Customer: I see.
I do love a precise explanation. I take that one.
🤣👌 accurate interpretation
We have been saying 'munted' since the big Christchurch earthquake, but I have no idea where it originated.
That's the perfect technical response to all problems. It's fucked, just fucked so it can be repaired. If it was proper fucked you would need a new one.
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering remember to send them two pictures when they scoff at the price, 1 picture of a completely fuckered up fix that wont work worth a damn, or a fix that is done proper, tell them "i can do picture 1 for what you want to pay me, or you can pay me what I want for what you see in picture 2".
Explanation Done !!

Hey mate we get good feedback from viewers like you and know it helps make the videos more enjoyable so happy to do it 🤣
I actually liked the sound of the rain while watching. It was very relaxing.
What ever you're being paid it isn't enough, having been a heavy plant fitter for many years so its nice to see the work involved to repair the things we fuck up!
Hey mate thanks for watching 😎👍
Kurtis, you and your wife do an excellent job with these videos. You know what we are wanting to see and you give it to us without long times of wishing. Thanks for trimming and cutting and time-lapsing, all done very well. The blooper shots are fun, but really unnecessary, Kurtis is our hero on these repairs.
Hey mate thanks for watching and the feedback. We appreciate it! 😎👍
Another brilliant repair Carl 🤙🏴

This channel, as much as it makes me wish i had a huge shop with HUGE equipment, it really just makes me want a pitbull.
fantastic, stayed up late here in USA....LOVE YOUR WORK, PAUL
Bloody legend we know it's a crazy time difference thanks for watching mate
Wow, your boring bar has the same length as my entire lathe. And thanks for explaining and giving insights on the stuff you are repairing.
Yeah that's pretty crazy, our lathe could turn your lathe between it's centres haha
I think it is really cool that you have a wife that supports you so much she is willing to go through the tedious hours of watching what you are doing while filming. Very excellent material to watch!
I actually loved the sound of the rain, I love rainy, cloudy weather more than clear skies and warm temperatures. My eyes are so sensitive to light I cannot go outside without eye protection and try and do most of my work at night. Cloudy and Cold the better.
It's absolutely amazing that you can turn such a heavy part. You sir are what most little boys want to grow up and become. Great videos. Cheers.
Thank you for explaining everything so carefully. It's a very big help for us non machinist types. Keep up the good work lad.😊
A real man that speaks the language of a mechanic, especially in the outtakes.
Another learning experience for me. From watching your videos, if i had it to do over, i'd have to put machinist on my list of most interesting trades to learn.
Thnx again Kurtis! Keep those ChIPs Flying Carl!
Happy Easter to you & the family,

Hey mate thanks for watching glad you enjoy it. Have a great Easter weekend. Cheers 😎👍
You are a very lucky man to have a wife who is willing to come spend time with you while your working! In a few days I will be married to my wife 37 years. On the 19th we will have been together for 38 years. She use to come stay with me after she got off work as I painted lumber handling machines that I had with other had welded up that day. That was a lifetime ago!
I truly do wish you both the best in your life’s together! It truly is what you two decide to make of it! It will always be a work in process for the better or for the worse! We never know what life has in store for us... All we can do is take what we have and make the best out of it while enjoying the time you have together!
I really do love your videos! It makes me think about what if I had stayed in welding and as a Machinist... I would not had been forced to take the Anthrax vaccine that has almost crippled me now... but I cannot live in the past wondering what if. None of us can!
Thank you for sharing your time and experiences with us all!

Hey mate thanks for sharing and congrats on those 38 years! Yeah we work together in the business, she has all the accounting smarts to help keep my tool spending on track haha we enjoy what we both do and is great to be building a business together. Cheers take care mate 😎👍
Anthrax vaccine? Wait, did you serve in the US military for Gulf War One in 1991?
@@markfryer9880 Yes I was in the United States Navy during that time.
You are a goddamn genius, so capable and knowledgeable. You can't be that old, how did you learn all these skills and methods? Amazing.
Having now watched a goodly number of your videos it never ceases to amaze me how, whatever the piece of equipment, you know where to position the strop on the overhead gantry hoist. Likewise, when setting up a piece in the four jaw chuck, just a tap or two to bring it back to an acceptable runout. Not something that can be taught but is learnt through experience. 👍
Lots of steps in keeping things on track, even to the dots for putting it back together. Inspiring is the one word I would use.
Cheers mate appreciate the great comment and thanks for watching again 😎👍
After the first time you weld one up without those "dots" no one needs remind you to put them there ever again.
Ahhhh,The old Weld to shrink trick... You have learned well young grasshopper ;)

Couple years ago a friend of the family had to part with their 6+ year old female American bulldog. We’ve never had one of these and didn’t know anything about them.
