CAT D10 Dozer Cylinder Rebuild | Part 3 | Making the New Rod
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 авг 2024
- This video is part 3 of rebuilding a Caterpillar D10R dozer blade tilt hydraulic cylinder. In this episode we are replacing the damaged cylinder rod. The rod has scratching and the chrome is damaged so needs to be replaced. We start with pressing out the old bushing to check if the eye is damaged or not. Then the rod is setup in the lathe and we machine and part the eye off the cylinder rod. We machine up the new cylinder rod using 4" inch diameter induction hardened chrome bar. We need to machine both ends of the cylinder rod, the first end we are machining for the piston and cutting the external thread for the nut. The other end of the rod we also machine to fit the original rod eye, which is then MIG welded with metal cored wire before machining down the welds to complete.
Missed Part 1 or Part 2? Watch it here: • CAT D10 Dozer Cylinder...
In this video we are using:
- HMP-150T Hydraulic press
- TM-26120G Centre Lathe
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

Baiklah sir..
1 am, Sinaloa, Mexico. Thanks 👍🤜🤛
In the United States it is very common to have hydraulic cylinder rods ground and hard chromed as a way to restore the rod to factory conditions.
Do you ever do that or do you only replace the rods?
@@longliner205a4 Hey mate it's more economical and faster for us to just replace the rod.
So much to unpack here: The machine work, the blooper reel, Kurtis' mastery of the English language, Homeless trashing the office until he gets his toy. P.S. That dog needs his own YT channel.
All the goods! Hahaa we aren't giving him his own channel yet will lose all our subscribers 🤣😭
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering "Yet". So you're saying there's a chance. lol. Cheers from Canada.
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering it kinda looks like he already stole your channel hahahahahahaha
When do you and when do you not use oil on the lathe? What is the determining factor?
Should name the next dog Hot foot.
This guy is just awesome, the confidence he has machining these huge precision lumps of metal. I can only wish I could be like him, and I'm not being sarcastic
Cleaver skilled person 👍 we need more like him.
Best wishes, Geoff Lewis, Wales, UK, 🏴🏴🏴
Hey mate appreciate it! Thanks for watching 😎👍
Watched all three parts, looking for part 4. I hope you can get back to this project again. I know I'm not the only one that likes to see these projects to the finish.
Its gone
Somehow, I find myself addicted to all things machining and your channel is fast becoming my favorite, the humor, your interplay, the craftsmanship, the scale of the jobs you take on, etc. Very enjoyable, thanks from Canada!
Hey mate wow thanks for saying so we appreciate it. Cheers 😎👍
Good to see you using the lifting rquip rather than humping stuff around, keep your back safe so you can age without f@rked discs etc!
Yeah great to have an overhead crane in the shop 😎👍
Its nice to have a machining channel on YT again instead of one that just shows off tools that companies send in or tools viewers send in.
Hey mate thanks for watching glad you enjoy the vids 😎👍
Hello Brian, yes I totally agree with you, I know exactly who you are talking about (a large bomb) who as far as I am concerned does more posing than machining. A BIG joke. Never watch him anymore. Kurtis is the absolute opposite, and he replies 👍 has to be one of the best Channels on RUclips 😊. Geoff Lewis, Wales, UK 🏴
@@jerryuk93 Hello JerryUK I am glad others see him for what he is, I could say quite a bit about, what I have noticed over the years watching him is his Penny pinching attitude yet he has expensive vehicles. Hello Jerryuk. I recently looked at the large (bombs) subscribers his was showing 84K. And Kurtis, the lady and the Safety Officer have managed 1002K it just goes to show who is watched the most, and rightly deserved, excellent. Thanks for the reply 👍👍. Best wishes Geoff Lewis Wales UK 🏴

This is to say thank you, for your hard work and sharing it with us! Kurtis and Missus, y’all make an awesome team, video production quality is great. Much respect from Florida.
Hey mate thanks for saying so! We both appreciate it and glad you are enjoying the vids over there. Cheers
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Absolutely, you both deserve it. I’ve know many machinists that don’t have your work ethic Kurtis. And since I’ve caught up on all your videos (finally 😂) after finding your channel last week. Your Missus has absolutely made your channel both highly informative, but highly enjoyable. Cathartic to get right down to it. The quality only continues to get better!
Seeing Kurtis in the bloopers, let’s us get to see the human side and the ability to kinda get to know you in a sense, and with your missus being there brings us along for the journey. Homeless is just a cad! Such a ham on camera, but again, kinda brings us into your world, for those that are loving homeless, if that’s his real name?

Hey Geoff we both enjoy reading your comments mate thanks for taking the time to watch the vids! haha Yeah that grenade is a tough one of his favourites to chew. Have a good weekend mate 😎👍
I watched your videos mate and am awe struck and dumbfounded at your knowledge and abilities the way you just know what to do each time and the perfect machining you do Its hard to believe you have had no formal machining training you do this so well its a pleasure to watch a skilled person such as yourself as you work Keep up the good work
I do not know how anyone could do a better job of capturing your machining skills with her before/afters, slo-mo, close ups, chip follows, panning and zooms than your missus. VERY professional! Love the scrap bin landings and you two make a perfect team. We get to enjoy the finished video but have no idea how long it takes to edit which I know has to be lengthy so thanks a heap. Just for giggles and grins, have you thought about reversing roles for at least part of the interviews and then you could laugh at her. :-)
Hey mate thanks for watching and the brilliant comment we both enjoyed reading it. Yeah she puts in hours for editing but enjoys it and glad the viewers are loving it. I bet we'd turn camera on her and she'd get it in the first take 😂👍
The scale of these things fascinates me. When mounted where it belongs, it looks tiny. Yet when you handle it you have to use a crane and forklift.
Yeah pretty crazy when you see that 1 part imagine the size of the whole machine
I remember watching one bloke assemble a 750 ton extrusion press on his own with a Demag overhead crane, even the hydraulic pipe couplings needed a hoist and he made it all look so easy.
Thanks Kurtis for another great video. I told my son that if he was just half as talented as you are he'd be rich.
Hey mate thanks for watching
Always a pleasure to watch and never boring! Love the scenes of tossing the junk. Would enjoy a vid on explaining induction hardening and other Harding processes. Also, chrome bar stock and how its made and why you use it. Your channel is the best!

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Hey Kurtis, one question for me as an amateur: how long did this whole process that you put into those three videos take? Two days?

I do so enjoy your videos, I am retired now but have worked in Heavy engineering building Valves for oil, gas and water pipelines from start to finish...(Robt Cort and sons) and my love of precision knows no bounds, but In my latter years I opted for the maintenance sector which was more suited to my ageing body, however, please keep your fascinating videos coming, they are very educational especially for those that do not appreciate how important precision maching is.10/10
Stay tuned for Part 4 where we'll see Kurtis do the lolly with a centre drill after the point breaks off and sticks in the part. 🤣🤣🤣 Sorry, I couldn't resist that one, but you have to admit that's what the pointy little bastard's ambition in life is to do to you. 😁
Now you've said it I just know it's going to happen soon thanks mate 🤣
Homeless was saying “I’m going to get even with the human who did this evil trick on me!”
Well worth every moment. I'm so glad the grenade has withstood Homey's playfulness.

Thanks for watching
What a bombshell, the Safety Officer has a secret name! Part iv should be just as riveting, the PC gets knocked over starting a fire and the safety officer’s grenade is blamed! Will the truth be revealed??
another great video can't wait to see it finished. quick question Kurtis when you machine the weld to separate the eye from the old rod does how it's joined make a difference how you approach the job, like if its friction welded or normal mig weld.
Hey mate thanks for watching great question. Yes it does make a difference. MIG weld usually bit more guess work trying to determine how it fits together and machining apart to suit the existing join. With friction weld (like this one) much easier to machine/part off and turn a spigot at the same time.
I know I’ve commented before about the sights and sounds of your shop but, I feel compelled to mention the opening of your vids. The snap as your hit the on button and the spool up of the lathe. That is the signal to grab my seat quick like in a movie when the opening music starts and you hurry back to your seat with the popcorn and soda checking the movie screen to be sure you don’t miss the first scene. Then mid way the satisfying spin of the nut on newly machined threads and I exhale with satisfaction of a job well done! Here I hit the pause button to replenish my beer and popcorn then settle down for the finale. I’m glued to my seat until “awright guys that’s it for today and thanks for watching” still not able to leave till I see Homeless and hear Karen giggle….
Thank you for your video, It great to see you in action again. Greeting from Dublin Ireland bless you both.
Кыргызстан 👍👍👍
The 12mm button seems to be your go to insert for digging out the rod: is there a specific reason for that choice, or is it just because it works?
Hey mate yeah works well, it's very robust so they last a long time and can really feed it so removes a lot of material quicker
Just to let you know, old guys watch too! I enjoy watching the videos, great content.

Hey mate we will sell for less than a new OEM part 😎👍
Loving this series! Quick question: Whats the jubilee clip on the rod for when you;re welding the eye on? Is it to dissapate heat or something?
Hey mate the hose clamp is holding on a piece of aluminium sheet to protect the chrome rod
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Brilliant, thanks. I missed that the first time around. I can see it now :)

Got my machining/ Homeless fix . Another awesome video and 12:40 am here on the West coast of Canada so off to bed feeling satisfied.
Crazy mate thanks for watching have a good end of week 😎👊💥
Also I wanted to know why you use coolant on some cuts and none on others?
Hey mate a few reasons... depends on the material being cut, with the chrome induction layer I use ceramic insert so no coolant on those otherwise thermal shock and the insert shatters. The carbide inserts can be run hot/dry or flooded wet so I prefer less coolant mess and usually only run it when taking heavier cuts. Hope that helps 😎👍
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering yeah that's great info, cheers 👍🏻
