If Penn state or Notre dame which hasn’t beat baba and UGA in recent memory let’s see it. Once they do it then we can start putting the Indianas and byu teams up there. Indiana or Penn state has no past merit to work off of.
Great show, great takes. We think pretty damn similarly. The only question I have might be the last one about punishing conference championship losers, where I could see a few exceptions, What if a team gets into their league title game because the schedule was piss easy (say, an Indiana this year) and gets absolutely blown out/exposed in the title game. I think in that scenario a punish might be warranted. Because if we're using the eye test at all, clearly the team is outmatched by playoff-caliber teams. I do generally agree that in most scenarios there should be no punish for a conference championship loser. I don't think it will happen that way though. If we have an SEC team (say Georgia) lose a nailbiter in the SEC championship and drop to 3 losses you already know they're 100% out of the playoff. I could be off-base but seems hard to believe the committee would allow a 3 loss at-large team in, even with the good resume that Georgia has.
Who is Penn St's best win? Illinois? Who is Indiana's? Purdue? Who is Texas's? Vanderbilt? Notre Dame's? A&M? Miami's? Florida? Bama's is UGA but who is their second? LSU? Ole Miss is Georgia but who is their second? Wake Forest? Georgia's is Texas. Second best is Tennessee. Third best is Clemson. 3 ranked. This ranking is insanity
I couldn’t agree more . Georgia of all of these teams have the best leg to stand on… ole miss was a bad bad lose, but bama and vandy was worse , tenn at ark was worse, ole miss has way worse losses. But was I will say, Indiana hasn’t lost to a single team. They don’t have the win, but if they are one lose to Ohio state, they would 100% should be rating higher than most of these 2 loss SEC teams.
But you have to take losses into account too. Georgia has 2 losses. Even though Indiana has a weak schedule, they’re still undefeated in a power 2 conference. That means something. And they still have to play Ohio State. Notre Dame will play undefeated army. Texas plays Texas AM. Some of this will sort itself out
Yeah as a longhorns fan their schedule is 10 ply soft in conference. They need to beat the Aggies by quite a bit to have a top 10 conference win. They were banking on beating Georgia but that didn’t happen. I hate that they would make the argument about leading the SEC as the way to get to the playoffs

This format works much better BEFORE realignment and with 5 "power" conferences instead of 4. I think the best 5 conference champions should stay in but after the P12 died the bye for the conference champions really should've been axed.
GA went undefeated in the regular season but lost by 3 points in the SECCG and they put Texas in the playoffs instead. You cannot trust the committee to have any integrity or morals. Whatever they say doesn’t matter because you know they will judge the conference championship game and dump on the losers.
Texas solidly beat Bama AT Bama and GA lost to Bama. Georgia had much weaker schedule last year especially after they cancelled their one good non-conference game(OU) and replaced it with a cupcake. Georgia fans wanted to put GA in because of their history, not because of their performance in 2023.

Georgia at 10 is baffling. They have the best wins in the entirety of college football by quite a bit. 2 losses to top 10 ranked teams away. Beating no.1 team away. Toughest schedule by anyone in playoff contention by a country mile. Like....what?
Time of ranking doesn’t matter. It’s the end result that matters. Texas could lose to Texas AM (my money says they do), and Texas would be ranked 13-15. Good win but not the best. Oregon had a win against the current #2. That’s the best win this year.
And who would you put Georgia ahead of? You can’t put them above Ole Miss or Alabama because you lost to them. Oregon and Indiana are undefeated in the Power 2. Maybe Notre Dame, but that’s it.

Georgia beat current number 3 Texas AT TEXAS by 15. Objectively, Oregon does NOT have the best win of the year. They should still be number one, because they have no losses and the OSU win is AMONG the best wins this year, but certainly it is not THE best.

The simple fact is though that if win/loss ratio is valued entirely over schedule difficulty, that is what you will end up with. Why would Georgia accept a schedule like the one it has this year playing Alabama, Texas, Clemson, Ole Miss, and Tennessee, when the easiest path to the playoffs is to schedule only teams that are consistently in the bottom halves of their conferences and likely from weaker conferences at that. Alabama, Ole Miss, Georgia and Tennessee SHOULD be above Penn State, Indiana, Notre Dame, and Miami. Penn State lost to Ohio State, their only ranked win is against Illinois(25, and overrated even at 25). Indiana hasn't played a ranked team yet this year, either ranked at the time, OR currently. If they lose to Ohio State they shouldn't be in the top 20. Notre Dame has a good win vs Texas A&M, and wins against Louisville and Navy who were ranked at the time, but aren't now. They have a BAD loss though. The Northern Illinois loss AT HOME is significantly worse than Alabama losing to Vandy at Vandy. Notre Dame deserves to be top 1`2, but not ahead of the four SEC teams that have played way tougher schedules. This is the only one that I would consider debatable though. You can make a non-stupid argument on NDs behalf. Miami hasn't played a ranked team all year and has a fairly bad loss to Georgia Tech. Your argument of being unable to rank Georgia above Ole Miss or Bama is flawed too, since Texas is ranked above Georgia and we know how that game went. Georgia has 2 losses, one close and one bad, but both against top 10 teams. Ole Miss lost to Kentucky and Bama lost to Vandy. Texas has one loss, to Georgia, and hasn't played anyone else good all year. One could argue that a two loss Georgia has performed better than a 1 loss Texas, given the differences in their schedules.(In fairness to Texas, it is not entirely their fault, they can't be blamed for Oklahoma and Michigan being dumpster fires. You can only make a schedule based on what you EXPECT a team to be.) Realistically, out of the top 25 teams, there are maybe 3-5 teams that you would expect even have a CHANCE to have gone 8-2 with Georgia's schedule. For my taste, I think teams should be rewarded for playing tough games, not punished. It makes the sport more watchable, and since you can't achieve parity in the way the NFL does, it is the ONLY way to encourage teams to play real opponents.
It is going to be absolute chaos if A&M beats Texas. If Texas still gets in at that point I won’t know what to think. I fear they’d still somehow put Texas in over Ole Miss and TN in that situation.

When teams were punished in the 4 team playoff for losing their CCG no one absolutely blew up over it. Why should it be different now? If you drop a spot of 2 or 3. You lost, long as you're still in the playoffs. No one should say shit. Win and you won't have to worry about it.
The difference is that, for the most part, there was no expectation to get 2 teams from the same conference into the 4-team playoff, so CCG's were a de facto playoff game. With 12 teams, we have to expect multiple teams from multiple conferences to get in to the playoff, so now CCG's being de facto playoff games makes less sense and gives perverse incentives for teams to not make a CCG.

Indiana's non-conference schedule is FIU, Charlotte & Western Illinois. By contrast, UGA's non-conference is Clemson, UMass & Georgia Tech. Indiana in-conference plays 1 ranked team. Georgia's in-conference is 4 ranked teams, all Top 10. Yet an 11-1 Indiana may very well get a higher seed than a 10-2 Georgia. That's how crooked -- not just flawed but crooked -- this committee is.
so do it like NFL you win your conference or in the conference championship game no your in. Let it play out. if the team is good they play like it. still get the 10 teams in that play conference championships. than the non championship independents play the 3 and 4th ranked teams. but they get no bye .

For years I've heard Big 10 fans talk about how the SEC couldn't handle playing in the cold Midwest in December. Kinda hoping this scenario plays out because it would be absolutely hilarious if that theory was completely blown up in the first expanded playoff.
Matchups matter more than weather, but both conferences hustle the system in different ways. For B1G them dominating the major metro areas gives them undue influence. For the SEC it's working the system so that their bad to middling teams get treated like world-beaters to prop up the 2 or 3 top teams.
I WANT to see the SEC play in the Midwest! That’s why they have been dominant. Let them come to South Bend in 30-40 degrees weather and snow…we’ll see how dominant they are.

BYU was rank 6 in week 11. They're now rank 14 going into week 12. I think it's clear how the committee feels about these low sos teams when they lose 1 game.

@@evskii. the time zone difference has made a big difference with regards to teams going multiple time zones and not performing well. SEC teams playing up in big ten/Notre dame stadiums in the cold and potentially snow will definitely have an impact.
Texas' biggest crux is their strength of schedule. I'm a Longhorn fan, and we got screwed over by our s.o.s. It sucks the ranked teams we did beat turned out to be dog shit
Thats what the projected line would start at with the home team giving up 1.5 which is like saying 4.5 because usually home field is around 3 point advantage but immediately everyone would jump on that betting the sec teams win by more which in return would make it go up and up till the betting leveled out in case you didn't know
@ayan... A hypothetical two-loss Texas REALLY would be more deserving than a one loss Indiana. Indiana chose to schedule peroneal dogs and D2 schools as non-conference opponents. Texas scheduled Michigan in the Shoe and three D1 schools, including UTSA, who was a 10-win D1 a couple years back. Indiana signed up for mediocrity and is winning. Texas signed up for a challenge, but uncharacteristically poor years from multiple foes (MI, OU, UTSA) is letting them down. HOPEFULLY they use it as motivation to steamroll KY and aTm.
I’ll be honest, of all the mid major programs, Boise State is the least objectionable program to earn a first round bye. They have one of the best winning percentages this century and they have multiple wins over power4/5 programs and their schedule isn’t bad (close loss to Oregon, wins over top 25 UNLV and fringe top 25 Wazzu).
Top 25 UNLV is comical. Wazzu, also comical... The ONLY thing you listed that has any relevance is the close loss to Oregon, who isn't nearly as good as they look. Just look at their game against Wisc.

I feel like Penn State should be getting the same criticism as Indiana. Penn State lost to Ohio state in their only big game why aren’t they getting talked about the same
PSU's SOS is 35 at this moment. Indiana's is 106 right now. There's a lot of G5 teams with a tougher schedule than Indiana. PSU's schedule will have approximately the same SOS as Ole Miss, but PSU is likely to finish with a better record.
My problem is this. Did the Indiana team, and by team, I mean the players not incl the coaches, just the players. Did they sit down before the season started and hand pick that schedule. No, they did what was asked of them, they won the games they were assigned. Thats got to be respected. I remember TCU. It wasn't a great game but them boys earned that butt kicking.
Southern teams that are all ranked lower going to play cold weather games on the road… they’re not supposed to have the odds in their favor. Red hot Tennessee was -8.5 @ georgia even tho Georgia came off an embarrassing loss to ole miss and has looked shaky all year. Home field ALWAYS has the odds heavy in their favor in college unless something is very wrong. These lines say that one set of teams are wayyy better than the other…

The committee has told us that both Alabama and Georgia would be no better than the fifth best team in the Big Ten. Maybe the SEC should just break up.
This is a simple fix. Take top 3 teams from each power 5 conference and 1 at large bid to highest ranked independent and play ball. 16 team playoff. Thoughts?
when u have to play a championship game and u lose, it means u can be kicked out of the playoff picture. which means a team on the outside who is waiting for someone to lose has an opportunity to slip in even though they dont have to play that extra game. this is the issue with championship games. teams who qualify will be punished for losing when teams who dont can be rewarded with a playoff berth. the best example of this was USC a few years ago. they were the 4th seed and went on to lose the pac 12 championship to utah (they played an extra game). ohio state, who didnt even qualify for their championship game (they lost to michigan) slips into the playoff without having to play that extra game.
This 12-team playoff is a mess. Awarding byes to conference championships is ridiculous logic especially when the competition level from conference to conference is completely different. The SEC debate of 5 teams and the Indiana debate should also never be happening. In my opinion, it should be a 24-team playoff much like the FCS model. Give every conference a seat at the table (Including G5), and get rid of conference championship games (they only punish teams). With 24 teams, the whole SEC bias is gone, Indiana is in the playoff no matter if they lose to Ohio State, the Big 12 gets their best teams in, the ACC gets their best teams in, and the G5 is happy because they are being involved. This also allows for more games on college campuses which is what fans and players want!!!!! (You can still have your quarterfinals and semifinals be new years six bowl games, but first few rounds should be played on campus)

And since Ohio state would be out that win Indiana has over them wouldn’t look so good anymore since they wouldn’t have played anyone good and they’d drop a few spots as well. On the conference championship game question, the Committee needs an actual clearly stated rule to the effect that losing a conference championship game to a higher ranked team will not result in a loss of ranking, UNLESS a lower ranked team wins their conference championship game and the Committee feels it is justified in leap-frogging that team over the losing team. For example, #9 Ole Miss loses to #3 Texas in the SEC Championship game, while #13 BYU wins the Big 12 championship game. The Committee would leave Ole Miss at #9 with the possible exception of moving #13 BYU ahead of them. Further, if #3 Texas loses to #9 Ole Miss, #3 Texas couldn't drop any lower than #9 as a result of that loss.
We need to: 1. Have a 14 game season. 2. Have a mathematical ranking system the has zero references to a particular conference, and that everyone agrees to. Have it be completely transparent, and devoid of human input.

Need a full 16 team playoff & no conference championship games. CFP rankings are only 1-16 for the month of November. Make whatever rule you need to have a certain number of conferences represented in that 16.

The problem is we, they, whomever, is trying to force 2 different worlds to coexist. Polls/rankings (which are bias to some degree) versus win/loss. If the level above and the level below college football do not have polls/rankings, why should the college level? Take your power teams and create conferences and divisions just like in high school, Div 2 college, and the NFL. that should shut everyone up. You can't bash how bad Clemson is this year but turn around and call GA's win against them a solid win. You can't say that if Indiana wins or loses against Oh st that Indiana hasn't played anyone, but then turn around and say that part of Oh st's tougher schedule includes Indiana. You obviously don't follow NCAA football - in 2022 UGA played 7 top 25 teams, won 7, lost 0, and played/beat 3 top 6 teams. No one else in the country came close to UGA's schedule that year. How many top 25 teams did your team beat in 2022?
I keep hearing there is a 'scheduling' problem in the Big 10. The problem is there are a few good teams and like 15 not good teams. That can't be fixed with scheduling.
Ohio state is favored by 13.5 over Indiana at home. If the SEC schools were rated correctly, they be playing these B1G teams at home and favored by 10-14 points. Everyone knows it but they all want to give the B1G teams the best chance to win bc they need help. They can’t just win it on the field without collusion. Gotta tip the scales to give them the best chances, just like Michigan getting tcu instead of Ohio state in 22 playoff. Michigan still lost to tcu team that Georgia beat by 58. Then last year everyone colluded to keep Georgia out of the playoffs bc we would be favored against all 4 teams. It’s all a joke. The committee is there to not put the best teams in, but to put teams from their respective conferences in.
I don’t think you can “fix” the scheduling imbalance year to year because you don’t know what you’re getting on a team by team basis year in and year out, in most cases.
playoff problem seems easy to solve: if a school wants a chance to play in the playoff at the end of the year then they would have to do a combo of the following: play two SEC teams, one big ten team and one acc team or two big ten teams, one SEC team etc etc ... if they choose not to do this then they're still eligible for a bowl game but not the playoff
I don’t remember what year it was and I know it’s certainly a different situation because it’s the NFL but if I remember correctly the Buccaneers were the first team from a warm weather state to win a game played at temperatures below freezing in the playoffs. It just so happened that in 2024 Oklahoma and Florida were bad. If they had been good, Texas schedule would have been more respectable.

After last year's snub of 13-0 Florida State, you expect fairness? Of course the committee should evaluate on field performance, even in conference championship games.
The days of comparing wins are over. Anybody can beat anybody on any given day. Boise almost beats Oregon early in the season, Ohio state had to come from behind against Nebraska who Indiana stomped. The landscape is spread out and that’s just how it is. Bama beat Georgia and Tennessee beat bama. If you don’t bring your game then you can get beat. That’s what college football is now. The whole strength of schedule and comparing wins argument is flawed.
Exactly what happened to UGA last year, when they were 13-1 and lost to Bama 27-24 and got left out the playoffs. Even though it was their first loss, they got punished for playing in it.
If you want to find the best team in the nation and one of them lose a head to head, why put both teams into the playoff when you're trying to find the best team especially if they have 3 losses. I know why SEC bias.
I know we're focused on the top 12 because that's the playoff teams, but if you take the rankings as a whole the committee is setting up to not have an ACC or Big 12 team in. Boise is ranked ahead of both Big 12 teams that are contenders for their conference and 1 of the ACC teams. ND is currently ranked 6 with Army this week ranked 19. If Army beats ND and finishes unbeaten with Boise finishing with 1 loss to Oregon we could see either the ACC or Big 12 champ left out if Colorado or SMU win their conferences.
I don’t think that’s likely as an Army undefeated season with the win over ND would completely knock ND out of the playoff picture, freeing up one spot. Then I believe a 1- or 2-loss ACC or Big 12 champ would get in over either 2-loss Texas or Tennessee. Indiana is the other wild card so if they want to go with 5 SEC teams they’ll be the odd one out but I don’t see either or both ACC and Big 12 being excluded. It’s safe to say, however, that there’s only room for 1 invite to the party for each this year though.
Beating 2 good teams is still harder than beating 1. You can't help the way the rankings distribute but getting a bye is still a big enough advantage imo.
Arguments like the one we have now is why it almost feels like the CFP committee is shooting itself in the foot by simply existing before the CCGs are over. There really shouldn't be rankings prior to that at all because it seems to lock in teams way too early that shouldn't be locked in. Your full season's body of work should be the basis of whether you make the playoff or not and nothing else.
Semi Finals should be on campus! I think college football is SO close to where so many of us who were always pro play-off have wanted it to be, competition wise. I think we’d be nearly there if it wasn’t for the extreme conference realignment seen in recent years. (Last year’s BIG12 and PAC12 would have been a phenomenal product feeding a 12 team playoff field). But even with current alignment, I think a 12 team playoff is going to be tons of fun this regular season is proof the magic is still there and possibly elevated with more teams in the mix. What I can’t get over is that the quarter finals won’t be held on campus. Campuses and the home atmosphere is what makes college football. When you factor is conference championships, 4 of the 5 most consequential rounds of games will be held in NFL stadiums. I think the on-campus first round will be incredible and it’s just a shame the top four conference champs won’t get rewarded with one. My proposed solution involves several major changes that would probably upset many people but I think would gives us more of what makes this sport great. In short, top teams deserve a home playoff game & the national championship game should be played on New Years Day. 1. Move the season up one week 2. Play conference championships the weekend after Thanksgiving 3. Play first round of playoffs at home fields of 5-8 first weekend of December 4. Play quarter finals at home fields of 1-4 second weekend of December 5. Semi-finals held weekend before Christmas at NY6 bowls in rotation 5. Losers of first round play losers of second round in NY6 bowls in rotation between NYE & New Year’s Day. 6. CFB season culminates EVER YEAR at 8pm EST / 5pm PT in the ROSE BOWL to decide the national champion *the Citrus Bowl will be elevated to NY6 status with the Rose Bowl becoming permanent host to the National Championship*

If the Hoosiers lose a competitive game to the Buckeyes, then they should be in. Going toe-to-toe but losing a close game away to a Top 5 team is certainly worthy enough for a spot.

19:34 Precedent was technically set with TCU. They lost their title game, but they never moved a spot. Granted, they lost to a team they had already beaten, but they didn't drop them AT ALL. Great show, great takes. We think pretty damn similarly. The only question I have might be the last one about punishing conference championship losers, where I could see a few exceptions, What if a team gets into their league title game because the schedule was piss easy (say, an Indiana this year) and gets absolutely blown out/exposed in the title game. I think in that scenario a punish might be warranted. Because if we're using the eye test at all, clearly the team is outmatched by playoff-caliber teams.
I do generally agree that in most scenarios there should be no punish for a conference championship loser. I don't think it will happen that way though. If we have an SEC team (say Georgia) lose a nailbiter in the SEC championship and drop to 3 losses you already know they're 100% out of the playoff. I could be off-base but seems hard to believe the committee would allow a 3 loss at-large team in, even with the good resume that Georgia has.

But was I will say, Indiana hasn’t lost to a single team. They don’t have the win, but if they are one lose to Ohio state, they would 100% should be rating higher than most of these 2 loss SEC teams.
But you have to take losses into account too. Georgia has 2 losses. Even though Indiana has a weak schedule, they’re still undefeated in a power 2 conference. That means something. And they still have to play Ohio State. Notre Dame will play undefeated army. Texas plays Texas AM. Some of this will sort itself out
If South Carolina continues its roll, that’s a very quality win for Bama. Georgia has a blowout loss, which hurts more than losing by 7 or less.

We had a PAC-12 when this format was formulated.
The Pac 12 fucked up disbanding. They had an easy road to playoffs every year now.
This format works much better BEFORE realignment and with 5 "power" conferences instead of 4. I think the best 5 conference champions should stay in but after the P12 died the bye for the conference champions really should've been axed.
GA went undefeated in the regular season but lost by 3 points in the SECCG and they put Texas in the playoffs instead. You cannot trust the committee to have any integrity or morals. Whatever they say doesn’t matter because you know they will judge the conference championship game and dump on the losers.
Head to head string of results (which the committee is ignoring a lot (SMU ranked above BYU))

Time of ranking doesn’t matter. It’s the end result that matters. Texas could lose to Texas AM (my money says they do), and Texas would be ranked 13-15. Good win but not the best. Oregon had a win against the current #2. That’s the best win this year.
And who would you put Georgia ahead of? You can’t put them above Ole Miss or Alabama because you lost to them. Oregon and Indiana are undefeated in the Power 2. Maybe Notre Dame, but that’s it.

The simple fact is though that if win/loss ratio is valued entirely over schedule difficulty, that is what you will end up with. Why would Georgia accept a schedule like the one it has this year playing Alabama, Texas, Clemson, Ole Miss, and Tennessee, when the easiest path to the playoffs is to schedule only teams that are consistently in the bottom halves of their conferences and likely from weaker conferences at that. Alabama, Ole Miss, Georgia and Tennessee SHOULD be above Penn State, Indiana, Notre Dame, and Miami. Penn State lost to Ohio State, their only ranked win is against Illinois(25, and overrated even at 25). Indiana hasn't played a ranked team yet this year, either ranked at the time, OR currently. If they lose to Ohio State they shouldn't be in the top 20. Notre Dame has a good win vs Texas A&M, and wins against Louisville and Navy who were ranked at the time, but aren't now. They have a BAD loss though. The Northern Illinois loss AT HOME is significantly worse than Alabama losing to Vandy at Vandy. Notre Dame deserves to be top 1`2, but not ahead of the four SEC teams that have played way tougher schedules. This is the only one that I would consider debatable though. You can make a non-stupid argument on NDs behalf. Miami hasn't played a ranked team all year and has a fairly bad loss to Georgia Tech. Your argument of being unable to rank Georgia above Ole Miss or Bama is flawed too, since Texas is ranked above Georgia and we know how that game went. Georgia has 2 losses, one close and one bad, but both against top 10 teams. Ole Miss lost to Kentucky and Bama lost to Vandy. Texas has one loss, to Georgia, and hasn't played anyone else good all year. One could argue that a two loss Georgia has performed better than a 1 loss Texas, given the differences in their schedules.(In fairness to Texas, it is not entirely their fault, they can't be blamed for Oklahoma and Michigan being dumpster fires. You can only make a schedule based on what you EXPECT a team to be.) Realistically, out of the top 25 teams, there are maybe 3-5 teams that you would expect even have a CHANCE to have gone 8-2 with Georgia's schedule. For my taste, I think teams should be rewarded for playing tough games, not punished. It makes the sport more watchable, and since you can't achieve parity in the way the NFL does, it is the ONLY way to encourage teams to play real opponents.

When teams were punished in the 4 team playoff for losing their CCG no one absolutely blew up over it. Why should it be different now? If you drop a spot of 2 or 3. You lost, long as you're still in the playoffs. No one should say shit. Win and you won't have to worry about it.
The difference is that, for the most part, there was no expectation to get 2 teams from the same conference into the 4-team playoff, so CCG's were a de facto playoff game. With 12 teams, we have to expect multiple teams from multiple conferences to get in to the playoff, so now CCG's being de facto playoff games makes less sense and gives perverse incentives for teams to not make a CCG.

Indiana's non-conference schedule is FIU, Charlotte & Western Illinois. By contrast, UGA's non-conference is Clemson, UMass & Georgia Tech. Indiana in-conference plays 1 ranked team. Georgia's in-conference is 4 ranked teams, all Top 10. Yet an 11-1 Indiana may very well get a higher seed than a 10-2 Georgia. That's how crooked -- not just flawed but crooked -- this committee is.

Let it play out. if the team is good they play like it. still get the 10 teams in that play conference championships. than the non championship independents play the 3 and 4th ranked teams. but they get no bye .

For years I've heard Big 10 fans talk about how the SEC couldn't handle playing in the cold Midwest in December. Kinda hoping this scenario plays out because it would be absolutely hilarious if that theory was completely blown up in the first expanded playoff.
Matchups matter more than weather, but both conferences hustle the system in different ways. For B1G them dominating the major metro areas gives them undue influence. For the SEC it's working the system so that their bad to middling teams get treated like world-beaters to prop up the 2 or 3 top teams.

@@evskii. the time zone difference has made a big difference with regards to teams going multiple time zones and not performing well. SEC teams playing up in big ten/Notre dame stadiums in the cold and potentially snow will definitely have an impact.

Texas scheduled Michigan in the Shoe and three D1 schools, including UTSA, who was a 10-win D1 a couple years back. Indiana signed up for mediocrity and is winning. Texas signed up for a challenge, but uncharacteristically poor years from multiple foes (MI, OU, UTSA) is letting them down. HOPEFULLY they use it as motivation to steamroll KY and aTm.

I’ll be honest, of all the mid major programs, Boise State is the least objectionable program to earn a first round bye. They have one of the best winning percentages this century and they have multiple wins over power4/5 programs and their schedule isn’t bad (close loss to Oregon, wins over top 25 UNLV and fringe top 25 Wazzu).
Top 25 UNLV is comical. Wazzu, also comical... The ONLY thing you listed that has any relevance is the close loss to Oregon, who isn't nearly as good as they look. Just look at their game against Wisc.

PSU's SOS is 35 at this moment. Indiana's is 106 right now. There's a lot of G5 teams with a tougher schedule than Indiana. PSU's schedule will have approximately the same SOS as Ole Miss, but PSU is likely to finish with a better record.
My problem is this. Did the Indiana team, and by team, I mean the players not incl the coaches, just the players. Did they sit down before the season started and hand pick that schedule. No, they did what was asked of them, they won the games they were assigned. Thats got to be respected. I remember TCU. It wasn't a great game but them boys earned that butt kicking.

Southern teams that are all ranked lower going to play cold weather games on the road… they’re not supposed to have the odds in their favor. Red hot Tennessee was -8.5 @ georgia even tho Georgia came off an embarrassing loss to ole miss and has looked shaky all year. Home field ALWAYS has the odds heavy in their favor in college unless something is very wrong. These lines say that one set of teams are wayyy better than the other…

The committee has told us that both Alabama and Georgia would be no better than the fifth best team in the Big Ten. Maybe the SEC should just break up.

when u have to play a championship game and u lose, it means u can be kicked out of the playoff picture. which means a team on the outside who is waiting for someone to lose has an opportunity to slip in even though they dont have to play that extra game. this is the issue with championship games. teams who qualify will be punished for losing when teams who dont can be rewarded with a playoff berth. the best example of this was USC a few years ago. they were the 4th seed and went on to lose the pac 12 championship to utah (they played an extra game). ohio state, who didnt even qualify for their championship game (they lost to michigan) slips into the playoff without having to play that extra game.
Also, Tennessee is ranking higher in the SEC than Bama but they're not outside of the playoff? What the hell are we doing?

This 12-team playoff is a mess. Awarding byes to conference championships is ridiculous logic especially when the competition level from conference to conference is completely different. The SEC debate of 5 teams and the Indiana debate should also never be happening. In my opinion, it should be a 24-team playoff much like the FCS model. Give every conference a seat at the table (Including G5), and get rid of conference championship games (they only punish teams). With 24 teams, the whole SEC bias is gone, Indiana is in the playoff no matter if they lose to Ohio State, the Big 12 gets their best teams in, the ACC gets their best teams in, and the G5 is happy because they are being involved. This also allows for more games on college campuses which is what fans and players want!!!!! (You can still have your quarterfinals and semifinals be new years six bowl games, but first few rounds should be played on campus)

And since Ohio state would be out that win Indiana has over them wouldn’t look so good anymore since they wouldn’t have played anyone good and they’d drop a few spots as well. On the conference championship game question, the Committee needs an actual clearly stated rule to the effect that losing a conference championship game to a higher ranked team will not result in a loss of ranking, UNLESS a lower ranked team wins their conference championship game and the Committee feels it is justified in leap-frogging that team over the losing team. For example, #9 Ole Miss loses to #3 Texas in the SEC Championship game, while #13 BYU wins the Big 12 championship game. The Committee would leave Ole Miss at #9 with the possible exception of moving #13 BYU ahead of them. Further, if #3 Texas loses to #9 Ole Miss, #3 Texas couldn't drop any lower than #9 as a result of that loss.
We need to:
1. Have a 14 game season.
2. Have a mathematical ranking system the has zero references to a particular conference, and that everyone agrees to. Have it be completely transparent, and devoid of human input.

Need a full 16 team playoff & no conference championship games. CFP rankings are only 1-16 for the month of November. Make whatever rule you need to have a certain number of conferences represented in that 16.

If the level above and the level below college football do not have polls/rankings, why should the college level? Take your power teams and create conferences and divisions just like in high school, Div 2 college, and the NFL. that should shut everyone up. You can't bash how bad Clemson is this year but turn around and call GA's win against them a solid win. You can't say that if Indiana wins or loses against Oh st that Indiana hasn't played anyone, but then turn around and say that part of Oh st's tougher schedule includes Indiana. You obviously don't follow NCAA football - in 2022 UGA played 7 top 25 teams, won 7, lost 0, and played/beat 3 top 6 teams. No one else in the country came close to UGA's schedule that year. How many top 25 teams did your team beat in 2022?

Ohio state is favored by 13.5 over Indiana at home. If the SEC schools were rated correctly, they be playing these B1G teams at home and favored by 10-14 points. if a school wants a chance to play in the playoff at the end of the year then they would have to do a combo of the following:
play two SEC teams, one big ten team and one acc team or two big ten teams, one SEC team etc etc ... if they choose not to do this then they're still eligible for a bowl game but not the playoff

I don’t remember what year it was and I know it’s certainly a different situation because it’s the NFL but if I remember correctly the Buccaneers were the first team from a warm weather state to win a game played at temperatures below freezing in the playoffs. After last year's snub of 13-0 Florida State, you expect fairness? Of course the committee should evaluate on field performance, even in conference championship games.
The days of comparing wins are over. Anybody can beat anybody on any given day. Boise almost beats Oregon early in the season, Ohio state had to come from behind against Nebraska who Indiana stomped. The landscape is spread out and that’s just how it is. Bama beat Georgia and Tennessee beat bama. If you don’t bring your game then you can get beat. That’s what college football is now. The whole strength of schedule and comparing wins argument is flawed.
Exactly what happened to UGA last year, when they were 13-1 and lost to Bama 27-24 and got left out the playoffs. Even though it was their first loss, they got punished for playing in it.
If you want to find the best team in the nation and one of them lose a head to head, why put both teams into the playoff when you're trying to find the best team especially if they have 3 losses. I know why SEC bias.
I know we're focused on the top 12 because that's the playoff teams, but if you take the rankings as a whole the committee is setting up to not have an ACC or Big 12 team in. Boise is ranked ahead of both Big 12 teams that are contenders for their conference and 1 of the ACC teams. ND is currently ranked 6 with Army this week ranked 19. If Army beats ND and finishes unbeaten with Boise finishing with 1 loss to Oregon we could see either the ACC or Big 12 champ left out if Colorado or SMU win their conferences.
I don’t think that’s likely as an Army undefeated season with the win over ND would completely knock ND out of the playoff picture, freeing up one spot. Then I believe a 1- or 2-loss ACC or Big 12 champ would get in over either 2-loss Texas or Tennessee. Indiana is the other wild card so if they want to go with 5 SEC teams they’ll be the odd one out but I don’t see either or both ACC and Big 12 being excluded. It’s safe to say, however, that there’s only room for 1 invite to the party for each this year though.

ie - winner can move up but loser can not move down.
Beating 2 good teams is still harder than beating 1. You can't help the way the rankings distribute but getting a bye is still a big enough advantage imo.
Arguments like the one we have now is why it almost feels like the CFP committee is shooting itself in the foot by simply existing before the CCGs are over. There really shouldn't be rankings prior to that at all because it seems to lock in teams way too early that shouldn't be locked in. Your full season's body of work should be the basis of whether you make the playoff or not and nothing else.

I think college football is SO close to where so many of us who were always pro play-off have wanted it to be, competition wise. I think we’d be nearly there if it wasn’t for the extreme conference realignment seen in recent years. (Last year’s BIG12 and PAC12 would have been a phenomenal product feeding a 12 team playoff field).
But even with current alignment, I think a 12 team playoff is going to be tons of fun this regular season is proof the magic is still there and possibly elevated with more teams in the mix. What I can’t get over is that the quarter finals won’t be held on campus.
Campuses and the home atmosphere is what makes college football. When you factor is conference championships, 4 of the 5 most consequential rounds of games will be held in NFL stadiums. I think the on-campus first round will be incredible and it’s just a shame the top four conference champs won’t get rewarded with one.
My proposed solution involves several major changes that would probably upset many people but I think would gives us more of what makes this sport great. In short, top teams deserve a home playoff game & the national championship game should be played on New Years Day.
1. Move the season up one week
2. Play conference championships the weekend after Thanksgiving
3. Play first round of playoffs at home fields of 5-8 first weekend of December
4. Play quarter finals at home fields of 1-4 second weekend of December
5. Semi-finals held weekend before Christmas at NY6 bowls in rotation
5. Losers of first round play losers of second round in NY6 bowls in rotation between NYE & New Year’s Day.
6. CFB season culminates EVER YEAR at 8pm EST / 5pm PT in the ROSE BOWL to decide the national champion
*the Citrus Bowl will be elevated to NY6 status with the Rose Bowl becoming permanent host to the National Championship*
@JoshPateCFB - Counterpoint to your Indiana stance... 2008 Utah. G5 with fairly weak schedule. Nobody expected them to beat Alabama whose only loss was in the SEC Championship Game.
If the Hoosiers lose a competitive game to the Buckeyes, then they should be in. Going toe-to-toe but losing a close game away to a Top 5 team is certainly worthy enough for a spot.
SEC just needs to go ahead and do their own end of year tournament. Maybe invite two or Ford seems that are deserving but this is ridiculous.
I'm going to explain this so even SEC fans can understand. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE doesn't mean shit if you don't win your games. Miss St (2-8) has the 3rd hardest SOS but their STRENGTH OF RECORD IS 102nd!! SOR is the metric that matters. SOR is the metric the CFP committe uses.

19:34 Precedent was technically set with TCU. They lost their title game, but they never moved a spot. Granted, they lost to a team they had already beaten, but they didn't drop them AT ALL. Which, I'm sure was done because they wanted the Michigan-OSU rematch to be the natty. However, they both failed the first round. Just saying, that may come up in the room when they're deciding.

SEC should break off from college football. The fact that Penn State and Indiana are in the playoffs ahead of all sec teams but Texas is a joke. South Carolina may beat both those teams.
Speaking of equal standards, what about Tennessee?
