  • A video response to the question what is the difference between the Barbour Ashby/Bristol Lifestyle Wax Jackets and the Barbour Bedale/Beaufort Classic Wax Jackets
    The Bristol and Ashby are the Lifestyle Collection versions of the Classic Collection Beaufort and Bedale jackets To understand the main differences between the jackets you have to understand the differences between the Lifestyle and Classic Wax Collection.
    Lifestyle Jackets tend to be more expensive, slimmer cut, letter sized (…S, M , L…), practical features are sacrificed for stylistic features, they are seasonally sold (or sold out rather) and tend to be Made outside the UK.
    Classic Collection Jackets tend to be cheaper , broader cut, numerically sized (…97cm/c38, 102cm/c40…), have more practical features, can be purchased anytime of the year and, for now, MADE IN ENGLAND. The Bristol and Ashby have a strong appeal to younger trendy buyers who tend to want a good looking jacket for urban living. The biggest practical features I miss on Ashby and Bristol jackets are the articulated sleeves that make the Bedale and Beaufort more comfortable to wear.
    All four jackets are 6 ounce medium weight wax cotton, have two way zips and have about the same amount of pockets. Ashby is 30 to 31.5 inches, slimmer and longer cut than Bedale which is 28 to 32 inches. Ashby lacks the Sleeve Articulation, lacks true raglan sleeves because of the extra seam on top of the shoulder , lacks a storm cuff, and lacks true riding flaps. The Ashby’s rear vent flaps are mere decorations on the Ashby and quite silly to have on a jacket that is relatively long. The Bristol at 32.5 to 34 inches long was for me too impractical to purchase. To make it the slim and sexy modernized Beaufort, the Bristol lacks the big rear game pockets, lacks articulated sleeves, lacks a proper neck gaiter, lacks sleeve gaiters, and lacks true raglan sleeves. I also found the corduroy collar to be quite floppy and cheaply made compared to the Beaufort.
    This is in no way saying the Ashby and Bristol are bad jackets over all. If you only want a cool jacket to wear for a year or two and high cost and low design-quality are no issue for you then these are your jackets. If you want practical features, high design-quality but don’t mind a broadly cut jacket that you will want to keep and wear for decades then the Bedale/Beauforts are for you.

    Perfect video. I went down the Barbour rabbit hole today after trying some jackets on at Macys and Orvis. Really liked the Ashby but didnt want to commit to $400+ on the spot without doing some research. Found out about the Beaufort/Bedale/Ashby synergy and the more I looked into it, the more my choice seemed to boil down to Bedale vs Ashby. Watched some other vids much less helpful until I stumbled across yours (I actually subscribed to you over for your vids on the Omega 3520.50 which I'm pleased to still spot in your vids). Your explaining your size and measurements was also very helpful too as I am similar build.

    Great comparison- one thing I think you missed on the collars is that Ashby has a finer almost “needle” cord versus the classic which has thicker “elephant” cord - in some contexts that makes the Ashby a better choice for a more refined look in office or business use.

    Great comparison piece. The differences as you say are quite subtle so this video will be very useful to anyone interested in purchasing one of these jackets. I went for the Ashby because of the slimmer fit but found myself looking for something a little less urban as well. Rather than purchase a Bedale however i decided to go for the new Lands jacket instead. It offers a markedly different style but it still comes with all the benefits you come to expect from the Barbour range.

    The reason the Ashby feels less robust is that it is made of a different material. The Ashby is Sylkoil, the Bedale is waxed cotton. Although Sylkoil is also waxed cotton the unwaxed fabric has a much softer feel than the stiffer cotton used in the Bedale. This is down to the different finishing process, the Bedale is pressed and heated to make it more consistent and stiffer. This is actually a major difference between the two, they feel completely different.

    Thanks for this video. I am in the process of deciding between these two. The bedale looks like a more comfier fit (altough I am slim and Ashby would fit me just right) I prefer a jacket that's roomier so I can layer up. Also the looks are much more classic. Small differences, but in this video I get different feel between these two. So Bedale it is, now I have to find it in my size (32) which is not that easy.

    Good video. I have previously owned a bedale. Recently bought another from Barbour outlet store which was sold as a classic bedale. However there are no internal cuffs in the sleeves and it definitely feels lighter (previous one was thorn proof whereas this is sylkoil)

I'm 6 ft tall, 185lbs with an athletic build and the Bedale (size 40) fit in shoulders but was huge in the body. I could have fit a basketball in there. The Ashby XL fit much better. I picked up a C38 Beaufort in the fall, and loved how big and warm it is. I wanted to get something slimmer and lighter for the warmer months. I really wanted a classic line one (i.e. Bedale), but after trying them on, they are just too similar to what I already have. So, I'm going for the Ashby. Oddly, I found that the S and XS in the Ashby are not that much different. If you try on the S and want it to fit just a tiny bit slimmer, try the XS. I could still fit a shirt and sweater on with plenty of room to move. I wish it were made in England like the classic line, but sometimes you just have to roll with what works. Thanks for the videos.

    One question: is the color of your Bedale "Sage"? On different websites, the Bedales sold appear to be darker. Did you notice any difference over the years in terms of production/quality?
    Cheers,
    Nick

    • @olaf2046
      @olaf2046  2 года назад +1

      Hi Nick. My Bedale was sold as the Sage color. It is an older jacket that lightened over the last decade. All the Barbour wax jackets tend to fade overtime even when re-waxed regularly. The production quality of the Barbour Bedale/Beaufort jackets have remained top because they are still mostly handmade in the same South Shields UK factory as they were 30 years ago. The newer style jackets made in Asia and Eastern Europe have a much lower quality. I have a comparison video showing this difference. Go Bedale or Beaufort and you will have a timeless jacket. I don't find this quality with the Ashby even though on its own the Ashby is a great jacket especially if you want a tailored slim fit.

    Great comparison. However, for us Brits, the pronunciation of 'Bidale' grates on the nerves somewhat. It's BEE-dale after a town in North Yorkshire. Also, the Ashby (which I have) is designed among other things, for horse riding, hence the shorter length, back vents and the polyamide dripstrip.

    • @olaf2046
      @olaf2046  4 года назад +1

      The new Barbour Sage Green uses a different machine to apply the wax when the jacket is made so the wax is thicker, looks wetter, and as a result appears darker (almost black) in appearance. No worries in 3-5 years of regular seasonal wear the darkness of your sage green will fade and become a nice patina of green. Years ago I believe the wax was either applied with hand (or light machine aid) at the production of these jackets and the wax was not as heavy and dark. Keep in mind the jacket fabric under the wax is really sage green it is just the wax making the color look darker. Like when clothes get wet and look darker until they dry.

    Above 6' height and being a slimmer person don't even try the classic series. Chest is very broad and if I sized down, the sleeves lenght was too short. I love Ashby all the way, I have Made in England version and would even say that Bedale has too thick material to use it as an overcoat etc.
    Great video btw. !

    Hi, would you please help solve my question? What's the difference between a "Westerby winter bedale" and a classic bedale? I saw the winter bedale on a online shop but could not see the difference from a classic bedale and find any details about this bedale. Thanks a lot.

    • @olaf2046
      @olaf2046  4 года назад +1

      The only details I could find was at the Country Attire webstore. It seems to be a mash up product creation "Country Attire X Barbour" jacket:
      milled.com/country-attire-ltd/barbour-x-country-attire-40-off-92X8HqJm8lBHhpa3
      Outside of that website the jacket does not seem to exist. I maybe a special order just for that store. However the images shows a slimmer fitted jacket with longer sleeves that does not have the Bedale style cuff gaiter and a longer torso like the Ashby Jackets. The color seems to be a darker olive than the Classic Bedale with a thinner corduroy collar and fabric. I does not have any tartan lining and is not made in the UK. Also the price seems to be much cheaper than a Classic Bedale. I would personal just buy the regular Classic Bedale instead of a mash up store brand Barbour jacket

    At 6'1, I sized down considerably in my Bedale, otherwise the chest was simply too big. However, the length of the jacket turned out looking fairly comically short, like cutting my butt in half almost. So now I'm stuck with a Bedale that fits my shoulders and chest, but looks too short.
    That said, everything else about the Bedale simply strikes me as better than the Ashby. The Ashby is a fashion jacket, at least more so than the Bedale. Despite the short length of my Bedale, I still do not regret getting it over the Ashby. The functionality of the Bedale simply outweighs the perks of the Ashby's fit.

    • @olaf2046

As soon as you wear it for a couple of days it will fade to green after exposure to sunlight and the elements. The jacket in my video is 20 years old and had a couple of rewaxes so it is a nice "patina" green.

    I do love the original scent/smell of the Barbour wax jackets. Since some years this autentic smell is gone and any new Barbour wax jacket in the sops smell completly neutral like any other fabric. I just bought a brand new Beaufort last week. Unfortunately it smells the same, like nothing. I am about to wax this jacket now, as it feels rather dry.
    Any idea if there is a re-wax in the market which would return the former autentic Barbour wax scent? I think even the original new and current Barbour wax in the tin smells like nothing anymore.

      Hi I ordered the Olive color Ashby in a size Medium but quickly returned it because it was too wide in the shoulders and the sleeves were long although the length was roughly the same as the Small. I've since gained about 10 lbs since working from home through covid2020 and would probably fit a Medium today. If you are in between a Small or Medium then get the medium. You will grow into it. The Ashby, because it has a nylon interior lining and lacks a raglan articulating shoulder and sleeve, is not as stretchable as the Bedale and Beaufort wax jackets which have fabric linings and raglan articulated sleeves. So overtime a Small Ashby will ALWAYS feels Small with little to no stretch in it. Hope that helps.

    I doubt that Barbour would tolerate lower quality in production from Bulgaria, Vietnam, etc. The made in England label would be very appealing for the Queen Victoria set, but the rest of us poloi won't really care. If your Ashby's upper seams are letting in the rain, it's time to break out that tin of wax.
