Hi everyone, Redthony Dogtano here, the preschool's busiest music nerd, and today were going to be taking a look at this new title sequence for Clifford the Big Red Dog. Now, I've been following the stuff PBS Kids has been putting out since my mother first sat me in front of one of their shows two years ago, and as I've said before in my past Show and Tell presentations on the channel, I think they have some bangers, but it's been a pretty mixed bag overall.

separating the art from the artist is tricky when the art is a direct reflection of the artist. short answer is yes, but if some ppl are put off by it due to the brand of "rage" and recklessness in Travis's music (which ended up killing people) I don't blame them at all.

Idk if Travis’ “brand of rage and recklessness” killed people as much as the poor event planning, lack of medical tents, and water stations did.

yeah, agreed, I also don´t know, if there are definite lines that need to be drawn. When it comes to nazis, sex offenders etc. I often struggel with my morality. It is easier of course if it isn´t reflected in the music. Supporting them is off the table with such serious shit for me.

Re - Travis Scott: There is no right answer. If you want to listen to Travis's music, that's fine, it does not make you a Travis apologist. If you can't, that's fine too, you are not a soft-skinned hater. Everyone has a different ability to ignore or forget what the artist did, a different capacity to not dwell on it.
I find I can separate art from artist in most cases, especially artists who were before my time, but sometimes it's just too heinous. I loved The Lostprophets, but I will never be able to enjoy the music I know I would and could enjoy, if only I wasn't constantly reminded of the utterly horrific things the lead singer engaged with. With kids. I'll leave it at that.

I really can’t disconnect the music from an artist because it’s like buying a carpet from a carpet seller who did what happened in Travis’ case.
And I think that’s the whole problem with consumption blindness.
People don’t care anymore where the stuff comes from they listen to, wear or eat.
I listened to Travis so much but now I hear his voice and I feel so weird letting him entertain me with his music when I’m actually so pissed about him behaving like a careless child on stage.

As an artist myself I understand that there’s a separation between the artist and art. No one of my songs represents me as a person. I don’t even emotionally identify with some of my songs anymore, but other people do. The relationship with someone and a song is entirely contained by the listener. The artist has nothing to really do with it. When people say “is it ok to listen to __?” I always say yes, although it is sus af if someone mainly listens to NSBM or other forms of music with bigoted themes lol

Also an artist and I'd say that your experience is not universal, all of my art is deeply personal. I'd also say that for me the line gets iffy when the art does line up with the artist. Travis talking about raging and moshing in songs just is different now that people are dead. Jimmy urine of MSI making pedophilia jokes and using imagery of young women's underwear just is different now that he has been called out for being a pedophile.
That's not to say just don't make art about unsavory things, it's just nessisarly different if you also do that stuff. I also wouldn't want my art to inspire someone to do something awful.

I also wouldn't judge other people for still listening to it. I'm not sure how common it is for art to "inspire someone to do something awful" these days. I'm sure most people throw on a Travis Scott song because the beat goes hard, and they don't think about it much beyond that. I wouldn't ruin those peoples' time who are doing nothing wrong by forcing my own moral compass on other people.
And don't get me wrong, my art is very personal. It's just that songs get old and people change over time. And no one of my songs represents my entire being.

I absolutely think it's understandable that certain people can't bring themselves to listen to his music given his response to the whole Astroworld thing, but I personally don't let a person's public persona get in the way of enjoying anything they've produced, because it doesn't automatically tarnish its quality for me. I also think that Kanye West as a person is delusional and ego-centric as all hell, but I'm not going to just blacklist albums like 808s and Heartbreaks or MBDTF from my Spotify downloads because of that because it doesn't change my opinion on those albums overnight, especially since certain products were made before I was given new perspective on them as individuals outside their work

Let's argue: The Emaj7 played in the guitar intro to this video is out of place with the 3 previous chords Fantano plays, being G, C, and A. The A sounds like it may be a secondary dominant leading to D but instead Fantano plays an Emaj7, creating a jarring transition that is not smoothed out with any chords after it that might establish why an Emaj7 makes harmonic sense in this context. And then, even worse, he loops it? Light 3. I appreciate the bold direction but I was expecting more.

Record labels, Hollywood, and the entertainment industry as a whole has bred this idea of pushing the individual, pushing the persona, or pushing a brand rather than focusing on the media itself that is produced by those said entities. Its lead to a culture of praising celebrities for their art rather than praising the art itself. This type of human commodification has soiled what it means to actually consume art. The fact of the matter is that streams are really just a collection of numbers, artists get paid in piss droplets for their streams from a streaming service, the value from the streams derives from influence. Look at how travis scott kickstarted his career, by using botted streams and a way to influence people into giving him a platform for his career. Once an artist loses credibility from perhaps an outside factor, then their streams aren't a justification for influence. I mean, R Kelly has 4.5 million monthly listeners on spotify but he can't do shit with these numbers, it's like the name "R Kelly" has become worthless like a fallen stock price. The whole idea of supporting artists by streaming their songs was pushed by Spotify in order to get people to buy their expensive service, the reality is that as an individual consumer, you practically have no power to do anything to support an artists career. This is why it was never NOT ok to listen to Travis Scott's music, or anyone else's for crying out loud. I understand if you personally are uncomfortable listening to someone's music after something that they have done, but don't abstain yourself due to an economic reason, you don't have the power to affect someone's pocket.
P.S. Although you don't have as much power as a consumer, it should be noted that abstaining from buying merch is the best way to not support an artist. The margins are very high for clothing, they make the most money off of clothes.

Those young people who lost their life’s should not be in vein and stricter measures should be taken to protect future concert goers.
When it comes to drugs - the security and venue can only do so much - the audience has to police themselves. After most shows we find a lot of drugs on the ground and people are mixing it with alcohol while being in the crowd with no breathing room.
I’ve been to two Travis Scott shows - one at opera house in Toronto Canada 🇨🇦 and One at a music festival in Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺

I'm still upset about people's reactions to the whole Travis Scott thing. People want to act like they would react perfectly in that given situation. They've never performed in front of thousands of people (especially coming out of social isolation), having to make second to second decisions about something with that much pressure on you. I wish people were more understanding of that instead of jumping to the conclusion that he's a bad person. Maybe he didn't do enough, but when there are that many chemicals going on in your brain, adrenaline ect. You're not thinking clearly. Nobody knows what it's like unless they've experienced it.

Someone tried using Billie as an example. Travis had thousands of people raging and he had little to no control over it. Billie had one person in a crowd of relatively calm people. That one person needed water. The two aren't compatible in the slightest. The crowd (travis) literally seemed like a wave at most points, and when you get into that it's hard for people in the audience to stop. I do think he could've had a better response, but I don't entirely blame the events on him. If anything, I'd blame the audience more.

Of course it is and ALWAYS has been. Why wouldn't it be? Travis didn't intend for anyone to die nor did he cause people to die. Live Nation did and also security/police did with their lack of action to save people when they knew about the incident. If Travis was unaware of what was going on, why do people get mad at him for not stopping? Was he supposed to magically figure it out on a stage with loud music in his ears, bright lights flashing in his face and a crowd of 50,000+ Infront of him??? People really expect celebrities to be superhumans, it's crazy.

I like this take at 3:00. Nardwuar is an incredible figure and the stuff he does is charming, hilarious, and super entertaining. That said, if I was some celebrity and had no idea who he was, there's like a solid chance I'd assume he was some random prank channel type youtuber dressing goofy and acting weird on camera to get a reaction out of me so he can put it in the video. It's sometimes rare for normal interviewers to be sincere and not looking to get something from the artist, let alone someone who approaches the interview in such an off beat and goofy way. I think people being rude to him is just one of the consequences of the industry and not anything to do with Nardwuar himself, and I imagine he knows it too.

There's companies involved. Higher ups that had the job to sort shit out and they didn't. "Professionals". Regardless, I still enjoy me some Travis and I'm still looking forward to his music. I'm not gonna pretend to cry and protest when there's people dying in war who we never care about. Just like people pretend to care about Ukraine because it's popular now. What about everyone else dying right now? They don't matter to us. That's the truth. It's too far away. So yeah, I'm still enjoying Travis' music. Period.

    Re: the titular topic
I've been thinking recently about whether it's moral to buy albums and singles from artists who are horrible people or who have done gross things in the past. Whenever someone criticizes Spotify and Apple Music because they pay artists horribly, I think that's valid, but what if the artist is 6ix9ine, R. Kelly, Mindless Self Indulgence, etc.? Is piracy a better option in those cases, or should you still pay those artists fairly for their music?
Also, my favorite overused comments are the wholesome yet absurd ones like, "Thank you for picking up my sister from softball practice yesterday, Anthony." Even when they're not funny, I do enjoy seeing them.

    • @hazelschannel162
      @hazelschannel162 2 года назад

For me I think it's if the art being made portrays the actions they did I don't think it's possible to separate things. Like with mindless self indulgence the pedophilia is in the music. Also if they are alive and still acting shitty I don't want to support that, for example JKR consistently donates to anti-trans stuff, I don't want my money going there.
If the music doesn't have anything like that in it I think it's fine. Like Cornelius doing horrible stuff to a disabled person when he was young is not present in the music. But that doesn't nessisarly mean you have to support the guy if you are disabled.
