The "Smash should go back to having only 1st-party characters" is a bad take if you only take it at face value. I've come to the same conclusion and it's because I was working on making a reboot concept for Smash and the only way I could make it work was to adapt this mindset. 1. Trying to make a future roster that is somewhat pleasing, cohesive and has room for both reworked movesets and several new fighters is impossible while keeping the numbers realistic, especially while taking into consideration that all 3rd-party content would undoubtedly require more time and effort to develop. (Same goes for stages, modes etc.) 2. If anybody ever wants a Subspace-esque story mode again 3rd-party characters would have to go. Imagine having to get the rights for all kinds of cutscenes, voice lines etc. Not gonna happen, unless you exclude all the 3rd-party content from that mode. This is what I think the true reason is that we haven't gotten a new mode like that again, along with the ever-increasing roster of course. 3. If we keep going as is right now we will never see any slightly obscure characters being included again. It's either main characters from new Nintendo franchises or big 3rd-party characters because all big franchises are now on the table. You want Karate Joe? Sorry, Nintendo wants Astrobot because his game is coming to Switch 2. You want Isaac? Sorry, Microsoft is buddies with Nintendo and they really want to put in Doomguy. I think following up a 1st/2nd-party only game with a game that focuses mostly on 3rd-parties would be the way to go. Unfortunately this all will never happen because people care so much more about 3rd-party characters just being included than everything else that could be.
I remember people freaking out about Terry Bogard's inputs in particular, which, as someone who has seen plenty of crazy motion inputs in fighting games, made me chuckle.
Popping Terry’s super inputs against people who have no idea how to do them never fails to make me laugh. The amount of casual players I’ve fought against who have no idea how to react to a half-screen Buster Wolf is too many to count.
Here's some of my own hot takes if people are interested: -Most characters that people claim should get moveset overhauls actually don't need them, they mainly need only one or two changes either aesthetically or mechanically where necessary. For example, Sonic doesn't need a full on overhaul/rework, just change his Side Special to something that isn't a second Spin Dash and give his model more expressions on the level of his brawl model and he'd be MUCH better, another example is forcing references into movesets for the sake of it when those elements can be better used somewhere else. Like rather than trying to rework Peach and making her entire moveset Showtime based, instead add a Showtime themed stage, have Stella appear in one of her taunts and include one of Peach's transformations as an alternate costume. Peach's moveset represents her character well now as it did back in Melee and there's not really a need to touch it besides what I just mentioned, and this goes for many other characters and not just Peach. -Shadow makes much, *MUCH* more sense to be his own character instead of an Echo Fighter, I will stand by and die on this (Green) hill, especially given the problems Sonic has with his moveset currently. You want a character who would work great as a Sonic Echo Fighter? Try Metal Sonic or even Mighty the Armadillo. -The only requirements for a character being added to Smash is that they are a video game character and can have a viable moveset made for them, popularity (worldwide or regional) and amount of games featured on Nintendo consoles are irrelevant (I know this doesn't sound much like a hot take but many still swear by these and take them as gospel despite that Sakurai himself has shown he doesn't care about those "rules").
1. That's an absolutely great point, couldn't agree more. It has gotten to the point where I've started to see people suggesting that characters should just get a second moveset, on top of their already existing one, and it's absolutely ridiculous. A very select few characters would benefit from a full rework, while most characters (like Peach, Mario, Donkey Kong etc.) can do with just a move change here or there. 2. Personally I think the answer lies somewhere in-between. While Shadow does have his own abilities I think it'd make sense to make him a semi-clone. His basic moves could be like Sonic's but more elaborate ones, like specials and maybe one smash attack, could be original. I don't think Shadow should be the next Sonic character to enter the roster though. 3. While true I think it's fair to say that it's beneficial to the most amount of people to choose a fun popular character over a fun unpopular one. There's no rule but there are always some invisible parameters in place (like there always being a new Pokémon and Mario character)
My hot take: This is Sakurai’s game, so let him add what he wants even if you may not care. The threats to him when Byleth was announced was ridiculous.
I never understood the whole "Echo fighters should have been alts" thing. Like buddy, you do know there is literally a toggle to do just that right? That was kind of their whole gimmick in the first place when they first got revealed, clone characters that you can hide as alts...
Thanks for reading my comment. I definitely agree that Smash shouldn't always pick the main protagonist. I think this is something that the Smash team is learning, because we got both Min Min and Pyra/Mythra instead of spring man and Rex respectively.
I disagree with the take saying echo fighters should just be costumes instead. Most of them have significant differences to the character they come from. By making them costumes, you'd be taking away their unique taunts, victory screens, and even moves in some cases. Ken wouldn't have his fire properties. Chrom wouldn't have Soaring Slash. Lucina wouldn't have her consistent blade. Dark Samus wouldn't be floating anymore. It'd be too jarring for them to just be costumes. Echo fighters are really just harmless bonus characters. They don't "steal slots" from other characters. I've seen too many fan rosters cut them because "they're wasted slots" when they take very little development time. Cutting them doesn't free up time for a fully unique character. At best, cutting echo fighters would just leave room for... more echo fighters. Nice video, by the way. I enjoyed it very much.
I agree. Smash really isn't the "hall of fame for video games" people think it is. If it was, the roster would look drastically different, and you certainly wouldn't see characters like the Ice Climbers or Roy. People take phrases like that WAY too seriously.
Ah, hot takes. The time where folks on the Internet have their moments to share opinions and potentially soapbox their stance. Conceptually, they are fun to talk about, but more often than not people get all riled up about it and start ridiculous arguments over personal taste. Being on social media for almost 15 years now, I have seen many interesting takes on Smash. If I may, allow me to share just one of my own. The hot take that I have maintained for a while is...Super Smash Bros. 4 is my favorite game in the series. As the Wii U version just turned 10 years old, I have been enamored by its colorful visuals and wide selection of modes. I like how it's essentially the most "unserious" Smash Bros. game; it doesn't focus too much on a big story and more so acts as a silly, fun museum of Nintendo stuff. Even the trophy descriptions are goofy! Plus, I dig the expansive selection of starting fighters, and I like using Giga Bowser and Mega Lucario as Final Smash transformations. It's perfect for a casual like me! There are certainly a number of reasons to hate on Smash 4. Just the thought of Bayonetta alone is enough to make players salty. Others harp on the lack of a story mode. Still others claim the modes are unnecessary fluff, unlocking fighters is too easy, the trophy text is cringe, or that the game lacks an identity. Furthermore, Ultimate (my second favorite Smash game) does have a much larger roster of fighters, stages, and music. These are fair arguments. I will admit that 3DS and Wii U aren't perfect games. Personally, I find its dodging system lackluster, and for as much as I like playing Classic Mode, Wii U's could've been better organized. Even so? I still love Smash 4; my thoughts aren't wishy-washy. For the most part, folks have been respectful of my opinion, but a few have questioned my stance on it. The temptation is to get defensive and tell people why they're wrong. Lately, though, I find it better to accept that people won't always like my thoughts. And that's okay! Video games are subjective. I'm not here to force anyone to change... Good video.
I'd like to see your take on World of Light! I loved subspace emissary for the funny character interactions like Lucario finding Snake under his box and King Dedede redeeming himself as a hero near the end.
Cool, my hot take made it in! Although I definitely should've worded my take better, didn't really say much about it. I really just wish that the Echo Fighters could've been more unique, or at least be skins. Anyways, the video was a great watch!
My hot takes: -Toad is a better and most possible character than Waluigi to represent Mario's spin-off (heck, even more than Geno imo) -Smash needs a reboot on his roster, gameplay wise and cantity wise, some characters (Mario, Sonic, Kirby and Samus) needs 2 or 3 refreshing new moves and updated/brand new animations, meawhile others needs a slight or full overhaul (Ganondorf, mash all the Miis in one slot to represent better the Mii games) and so on -Dr Eggman is a better new representative to Sonic than Shadow (I don't hate Shadow, it's just Eggman could be more fun gameplay wise and a better representation of the Sonic franchise than him -Smash Ultimate Deluxe is a bad, BAD idea This is only my and just MY OPINION, good video guys!

Yeah I’m on the boat that Smash at this point NEEDS to have a reboot. It’s gotten to the point that especially the characters since the 64 days have REALLY shown their old age in their movesets. Even the characters from Melee, Brawl and Smash 4 have shown to be lackluster like Ganondorf, Little Mac, Sonic (LOOKING AT YOU BLUE BLUR), etc. The few characters that DO make it to the next Smash game desperately need their movesets scrapped and reworked. For example: Mario can get his Ground Pound ability for his down air, He can throw Cappy for his Side B, Mario can transform into the T-Rex capture for his Final Smash. Sonic can get a boost mechanic that nerfs him if he decides to camp and actively reward the player for interacting with the opponent plus a momentum based movement style for Sonic would fit perfectly and they can give him his personality and attitude missing since Brawl back. Ganondorf can include his magical projectiles from the Zelda series like from Ocarina of Time, the ability to float similar to Peach/Daisy, for a taunt he can flex the Triforce of Power, for his down throw he can literally throw his opponent into the ground and stomp on them with full force. Kirby can get more out of his momentum in the air so he can get more combos out of his air speed, Kirby can use a variety of his different copy abilities for his attacks like a mini version of his Ultra Sword for his Back Air, his hammer can be his side smash, Kirby can use his High Jump ability from Return to Dreamland for his recovery, He can use his Wheel copy ability for his side B. Kirby can either use his Robobot armor or his 18 wheeler truck from Forgotten Land as his new Final Smash to get that Modern Kirby representation that was missing so badly all these years. Little Mac can get his KO punch reworked by instead of a meter, Little Mac can use the Star Punch like in Punch Out Wii for each successful attack to the opponent at a specific time. 1 Star is the weakest, 2 Stars is a pretty good attack with good launching power, 3 Stars is almost a guaranteed KO, however it’s easy to lose 1 Star for each powerful attack landed on Little Mac. His air game would have to be improved so he doesn’t get cheesed easily off stage anymore like giving him the ability to use his Side B after getting hit like in Smash 4 and being able to use his Up B immediately afterwards like in Ultimate. Daisy as an echo fighter from Peach seems fine on paper, but in execution there was literally NO difference between the two. You might as well call Daisy a glorified costume for Peach. I’d want Daisy to be the bruiser version of Peach like how Dr. Mario is a hard hitter compared to Mario. I’d want Daisy to throw punches, headbutt the opponent for her grab pummel, kick them like a soccer ball for her forward throw, Daisy needs to be faster than Peach. Just SOMETHING to make Daisy different from Peach. Young Link needs to be different from the other Links since Breath of the Wild got represented, so Young Link should represent Majora’s Mask since that’s arguably HIS defining game. He can put on the Goron mask and chuck the opponent for his throws, he can put on the Deku Shrub mask and fly with his two flowers for his recovery, He can use the Zora mask to shoot projectiles for his Side B. He can even put on the Fierce Deity mask for his Final Smash and go ham on the opponent. I can go on about this, but LONG rant aside, I do believe Smash has definitely hit a point to where we can’t add more characters without heavily adjusting the old characters movesets first so the team can then focus on making ALL the characters feel faithful to the games they came from. Smash Ultimate’s DLC is the perfect blueprint to reference how to make a character feel faithful to their origin game. Joker, Steve, Kazuya and Banjo are some good examples.
Here's my hot take: Gimmicks are good and in fact also fun. People hate characters with gimmicks but the real problem is that said gimmicks are badly balanced, I'd admit I dislike certain gimmicks like comeback mechanics (looking at Arsene) but then some Smash 4 veterans are good examples on how to make them balanced: Cloud no longer keeps Limit forever, Rosalina and Luma's hitbox and power are way more reasonable, Bayonetta's Witch Time is no longer a win button. Lastly my reasoning is that characters with unique gimmicks are some of the most fun I'd had in Smash, learning Hero's spells, controlling Luma, stuff like that. Maybe it is because I've been playing since the 64/Melee days and old, simple characters seem too basic for me.
Yo! I cameod! In all seriousness, I do admit Smash Bros. hype has definitely slowed down during these last years, and even though I still love it, and especially how miraculous Ultimate turned out to be, I do feel it might come a point we have to go back to basics to make the series a little rejuvenated from basically reaching the full potential of its original iteration. So a reboot doesn't seem like a bad idea, but what I hope is that they make a perfectly great meaty game that can satisfy both single and multi players.
I agree with the take about command characters the most, sure, kazuya is insane, and playing against a good one would infuriate anyone but when people say those who play him are carried I have to disagree cuz like doing all those frame perfect inputs aint easy.
My Smash Bros Hot Take: They should include Dragon King (from Dragon King: The Fighting Game AKA Beta Smash 64) in the next Smash game. They already included him in Smash Remix and he has a great moveset there.
8:20 joker in smash feels like such a double edged sword to me tho, like on one hand I’m glad he is there and that it made people more aware of persona, on the other hand, it feels like every person I meet in person that claims to know about persona only knows about joker in smash and literally nothing else, like, quit claiming you know stuff about persona when your only knowledge is the existence of joker in smash and literally nothing else!! I also just wish that other protagonists appeared either as skins or different characters, especially since while I love p5 and it’s the newest in the series, of the modern games p5 is still widely considered to be the least favorite of those who have played the modern games and I’d just like to see representation for persona 3 and 4, they could have easily split it into 4 skins too, joker, yu, makoto and probably akechi since it’s still primarily a persona 5 rep, tho I wouldn’t be mad if Tatsuya was there but it just seems unlikely
Here are my Hot Takes: - Pyra, Mythra and Byleth are better inclusions than Piranha Plant. - I personally don't think Waluigi will be in Smash. There are much Mario characters that have so much potential, like Pauline, Nabbit, Kamek, or even Dry Bones. - Kazuya is a fun character. - The people who complains about the Fire Emblem representation are the same guys who want Dante or Zero. - Crash Bandicoot is over requested.
Unlike what fans claim, Captain Falcon doesn't feel like the "Face of Smash Bros." It's weird how all of his special moves are made up for the series, but he never uses the gun that he always carries. Some of his quotes could just as easily be used by Ryu, Terry, or other fighting game characters. Shouldn't Master Hand be the face of Smash Bros? After all, he is the creator of the universe and an iconic boss. Gamers take Smash Bros. too seriously, and I'm tired of it.
My smash bros hot take. People that say Miis never fight in their games clearly never played ANY of the mii games. Mii swordfighter is over hated. Sans is mid. The deconfirmed costume for the mii fighters is boring and they should've used the costumes from previous mii games and some original outfits. The male Miis should only have male voices and the female miis should only have female voices. The female mii fighters should have their own moveset and animation for each class. The miis should have more special moves.
I dont play Smash anymore because it got too boring. Sold my game years ago. Give me a full story-like smash with multiple endings, and movie scenes. If they do that, I'll give them money. Take the competitive nature out of it, dare i say turn-based persona smash game mechanic for story mode.
My hot take is that The Subspace Emissary is incredibly mediocre. The levels and enemies are bland and not fun to play or fight. The only good part of the mode is the cutscenes, which I guess is the reason why Sakurai saw them as rewards and ultimately cut down the amount of cutscenes to instead use the budget on reveal trailers. Subspace is the only thing Brawl has going for it because the gameplay is bad and it still is mediocre. Brawl is one of the weakest Smash games to me for those reasons, only being better than the original.
here are some of my takes -Geno is a terrible choice for a character. after playing the Super Mario RPG for the first time this year I really didn't get the hype with him; he has a cool design but outside of that he didn't leave that much of an impression as he's just kinda there and if anything Mallow should be the one who should be added as he is more of a main character. plus, let's be honest, he's not that relevant even after the remake; all I'm saying is if more popular Mario characters like Waluigi or Toad who are known by many who probably don't even play videogames are not in smash, there's no way they're adding some obscure character from a spin off with only one game and its remake - The issue with the first party characters from the DLC for ultimate (Byleth, Min Min and Pyra/Mythra) is that it's clear they were only added as way to promote their respective games, especially Byleth since the DLC was chosen before Three Houses was even out. Pyra and Mythra I can understand since, even though I haven't played any of the Xenoblade games, It's clear to me that it's a series that is on the rise so I can understand adding another character from that series, but with Byleth, like I said, it feels like they were added to promote Three Houses and Arms pretty much became forgotten so Min Min, as a DLC rep, feels like filler. my solution would be to change them to fan favorite characters from other series like changing Byleth with Cynthia from pokemon and Min Min with Skull Kid from Zelda - I think that, if they were to add another sonic character, they should add Eggman or Tails instead of Shadow since those two have more significance to the franchise. adding Shadow before those two would be like adding Rosalina before Luigi or Bowser -I don't know if this is that much of a hot take but I think the reason why many people are against Fire Emblem having so many characters is because it's not a franchise that guarants it. Mario and Pokemon also have a lot of characters, but the difference is that these are massive franchises that everyone knows while Fire Emblem, although popular, is not as big as those two. if it were up to me the only characters they should keep are Marth as he is the face of the franchise and Chrom and Robin as Awakening did save the franchise from dying - I never understood the argument that sakurai only adds characters based on how unique they are because let's be honest, most of the time it's not the case and there's some other reason. all I'm saying is that if he could add another character from Microsoft and he had to choose between Master Chief, Doom Guy, Crash and Voodoo Vince, I really doubt he would choose this last one because who the hell is Voodoo Vince (who may I add would be an interesting character gameplay wise)
The "Smash should go back to having only 1st-party characters" is a bad take if you only take it at face value. I've come to the same conclusion and it's because I was working on making a reboot concept for Smash and the only way I could make it work was to adapt this mindset.

Nice video, by the way. I enjoyed it very much.
Really enjoyed this video, would love to see more smash content in the future. I hate to be that guy but any character can be viable.
People claim they have a got take but then say the most basic overstated takes lol
Thinking that only giant big-names characters should be put in smash is dumb. Not having any niche/obscure picks would make the roster boring
I agree. Smash really isn't the "hall of fame for video games" people think it is. If it was, the roster would look drastically different, and you certainly wouldn't see characters like the Ice Climbers or Roy. People take phrases like that WAY too seriously.

My Smash Bros Hot take:
Banjo&Kazooie were the single greatest reveal in the series history.
And i will not take no for an answer, THIS IS FACT.

My smash hit take, 3ds/wii u are in my top three best smash games
Yo!
Smash 4 > Ultimate
Melee Adventure > SSE
SSE is shit
I agree with the take about command characters the most, sure, kazuya is insane, and playing against a good one would infuriate anyone but when people say those who play him are carried I have to disagree cuz like doing all those frame perfect inputs aint easy.
My Smash Bros Hot Take:
They should include Dragon King (from Dragon King: The Fighting Game AKA Beta Smash 64) in the next Smash game.
My smash hot take is that people bitch too much about zoners and "playing lame"
They're not wrong tho
Here are my Hot Takes:
- Pyra, Mythra and Byleth are better inclusions than Piranha Plant.
Brawl is one of the weakest Smash games to me for those reasons, only being better than the original.
here are some of my takes
-Geno is a terrible choice for a character. after playing the Super Mario RPG for the first time this year I really didn't get the hype with him; he has a cool design but outside of that he didn't leave that much of an impression as he's just kinda there and if anything Mallow should be the one who should be added as he is more of a main character. plus, let's be honest, he's not that relevant even after the remake; all I'm saying is if more popular Mario characters like Waluigi or Toad who are known by many who probably don't even play videogames are not in smash, there's no way they're adding some obscure character from a spin off with only one game and its remake
- The issue with the first party characters from the DLC for ultimate (Byleth, Min Min and Pyra/Mythra) is that it's clear they were only added as way to promote their respective games, especially Byleth since the DLC was chosen before Three Houses was even out. Pyra and Mythra I can understand since, even though I haven't played any of the Xenoblade games, It's clear to me that it's a series that is on the rise so I can understand adding another character from that series, but with Byleth, like I said, it feels like they were added to promote Three Houses and Arms pretty much became forgotten so Min Min, as a DLC rep, feels like filler. my solution would be to change them to fan favorite characters from other series like changing Byleth with Cynthia from pokemon and Min Min with Skull Kid from Zelda
- I think that, if they were to add another sonic character, they should add Eggman or Tails instead of Shadow since those two have more significance to the franchise. adding Shadow before those two would be like adding Rosalina before Luigi or Bowser
-I don't know if this is that much of a hot take but I think the reason why many people are against Fire Emblem having so many characters is because it's not a franchise that guarants it. Mario and Pokemon also have a lot of characters, but the difference is that these are massive franchises that everyone knows while Fire Emblem, although popular, is not as big as those two. if it were up to me the only characters they should keep are Marth as he is the face of the franchise and Chrom and Robin as Awakening did save the franchise from dying
- I never understood the argument that sakurai only adds characters based on how unique they are because let's be honest, most of the time it's not the case and there's some other reason. all I'm saying is that if he could add another character from Microsoft and he had to choose between Master Chief, Doom Guy, Crash and Voodoo Vince, I really doubt he would choose this last one because who the hell is Voodoo Vince (who may I add would be an interesting character gameplay wise)
smash 4 is the second best smash game, actually
Just replayed both versions and I agree
I think the addition of the new pokemon rep, Mario rep, and fire emblem rep were a complete waste of slots.
That's a cold take
Sakurai is extremely lazy however, it shows with some of the worthless movesets for Links, Ganondorf, and Sonic.
