A thing i noticed with smash and literally not any others game is how sect-like most smashers are. They play that game and nothing else, of course you're going to get burnt out at some point.

I hate how people overthink this. Smash’s popularity died because every games popularity dies. Even if it had pristine netcode and an amazing story mode and Nintendo supporting the competitive scene the games popularity would still die off. Look at the best fighting games like SF6, and tekken 8. They have all that but sooner or later people have been dropping these games and more will. Because nothing lasts forever. @@WatchDoggyDog This game has like no content tho, classic mode is fine but spirits are much more boring that trophies and don't even have a description, event matches also got turned into spirits mode but was waay better in melee , brawl, and 4. The one minigame in classic mode sucks and I wish we had break the targets or board the platforms. you also don't have to do specific things to unlock characters which I know mewtwo sucks to unlock in melee but still in past games you unlocked other characters by messing around with the different modes in fun and unique ways. You don't have any stages to unlock and all star mode got butchered. World of light is one of the worst modes in smash bros history and I would happily take adventure mode in melee over that any day. What happened to smash run and other fun modes like master orders or crazy orders. The idea of custom moves was super fun and more unique that a spirit.

Man... people get REALLY defensive whenever anyone criticizes this game, huh?
I'm just gonna say it... Ultimate is definitely not my favorite game in the series, mostly because of its incredibly lacking single player, extremely mediocre story mode, and the online still leaving a lot to be desired. Also, Spirits are just so much lamer compared to Trophies. Sure, it may have every single character that's ever been playable in Smash's history, and while that may seem cool at first, the novelty quickly wears off once you realize that the rest of the game was kind of sidelined for it. To me, it just feels like they took the "Quantity over Quality" approach with this game, and it's why I haven't touched it since early 2021.

I've only played Ultimate and a little bit of Brawl, but I'm upset that Mewtwo wasn't included in the one Smash Bros. game with a story like that. Like, his Smash Bros. version is apparently based on his movie version (not sure if that's true), and that version made a storm that was going to wipe out the entire *world*. Like, could you imagine him as a separate party/faction with his cloned Pokemon and mind-control?

I agree with this video about 90%, the community though yes has kinda ruined the fun competitively with the meta, the petty drama, and the controversies regarding some pro players illegal actions. There is still some good things, like Sakurai said, and still holds true “Smash Ultimate is the ultimate celebration of gaming as a whole.” It brought everyone one together, I met so many great people from this community, however 2020 and onward really left a sour taste in my mouth in terms of the competitive community. Nintendo’s business strategies was wild, and the Panda Gobal situation… (enough said there). But really for me it’s petty double standards for me, but hopefully TO’s will find a way to fix that, I refer to how they handle banning players and characters in some tournament settings, and not doing proper investigations when a player has allegedly committed a crime. Over a hundred pro players banned, and not a single one of these players have faced jail time; and unfortunately a majority of these cases have passed the statue of limitation, that really pisses me off.

Me and some friends had a gaming news website a couple of years ago and I remember during the pandemic we came with the idea to make Smash Ultimate open tournaments in cinemas taking advantage of lower screenings, enough space for everyone to stay safe and we got the approval of the site along with sponsors so we had some decent prizes like Pro Controllers, amiibo figures, discounts etc
Long story short, the heads of the local Smash community started trashing our event, talking crap that playing on a screen like that, there was gonna be too much lag, told their members that they'll be banned if the participted and that the prizes were a scam and in the end we had to cancel it due to bad press and low attendance.
Thanks to that I learned that the Smash community doesn't want anything that is not run by them, they always want to see the same players again and again and that apparently a keychain or a $1 is a great prize.
I love the game, I still play by myself or with friends but I don't want nothing to do with the Smash community anymore.

I think this video is extremely biased towards a competitive/hype culture/fandom perspective. It is completely normal for a game to wither in popularity after a few years, that's how everything contemporary works, not everyone is listening to The Beatles anymore but no-one would call them "unpopular"! Not every game can be like Fortnite or Minecraft that receive updates continuously for years ( even then, those games have been updated so heavily they aren't the same game as they were 5 years ago. It's to Smash Brothers teams credit they finished their game). Not everything can be a Smash Brothers Melee, that can build up a niche community over a course of years full of die-hards. It's normal. Even then, saying it "had a downfall" is ridiculous and you're only thinking of your own perspective, its still popular with casual fans and has it's own diehard competitive scene, that is extremely rare. So many games fade before they even make it that far. I feel we live in a culture where people feel games should be played forever, that not being talked about 24/7 anymore is a bad sign, not just how trends and culture work.Personally, I feel not all games should be played forever! There should be a time where people move-on, for diehards who love the mechanics on a deeper level, yeah they will stay, that shouldn't and won't be everyone. Playing one game for hours and hours, and getting bored is entirely normal, not some sign of an underlying fault. ( Most "die-hard"Smash Brothers fans don't even encage with 90% of the content that doesn't fit the ruleset they made up. Most people will only play as one character, stick to the made-up rule set of no items and only a certain amount of stages. To me, sticking up what stages, items and characters you use have kept this game incredibly fresh with friends. )

I grew up with Melee and honestly doesn't hold up anymore. I know I just triggered millions of reees by typing that, but it's true. I'm sorry, but gaming has some a long way since 2001 and I prefer the Smash Bros game with tighter controls, Banjo and Kazooie and Sora in it.
Everything eventually loses popularity and I get tired of these melodramatic videos from people begging for e-checks for easy video topics. The competitive Melee scene is not only toxic, it's filled with predators and Nintendo had good reason to distance themselves from that community.

  • @TheSweatSlayer
    @TheSweatSlayer 7 месяцев назад +2

Good video but I think you honestly missed a few VERY big reasons why smash ultimate is on a downwards spiral.
As someone who still plays this game and is very active in the scene to this day I'd say the biggest things that killed Ultimate where not the 2020 allegations, the pandemic or the new nintendo guidelines although those definitely did not help.
It was more the fact that fighter pass 2, while having some characters that many people wanted was EXTREMELY polarizing in the competitive scene. Min Min, Kazuya, Pyra/Mythra and ESPECIALLY Steve are all extremely broken characters in their own right compared to 99% of the cast and pretty much make up the majority of the top tiers in the game. They all promote really unfun playstyles such as Min Min walling you out from halfway across the stage, Kazuya killing you off of 1 hit, Steve doing BOTH of those etc. It was so bad there where talks of banning Steve from competitive play because he was just so unfair and killed viewership whenever he was on a tournament stream because no one wanted to watch his campy playstyle. That mixed with the current top tiers of smash ultimate such as Sonic (who runs away the whole game) Game and watch (who plays the game for you) and a lot of other characters made people just lose interest in the game because playing against and watching those characters every single bracket was just not fun to most (This is coming from a Steve player)
Secondly 3 HUGE companies in the scene Panda Global, VGBootcamp and Beyond the Summit all shut down or took HUGE financial hits after a falling out between them in 2022/2023. Together they pretty much funded the scene and hosted a lot of the major tournaments that kept the scene alive. So much so that the scene was going to have not 1 BUT 2 separate tournament circuits that 2 of those 3 companies where hosting which was the Panda Cup (Panda Globals circuit) and the Smash World Tour (VGBootcamps circuit). The fact these circuits shut down JUST as they where about to host the finals for both was a MASSIVE blow to the community and when Panda shut down and VGBootcamp lost pretty much all their funding and ended up being a shell of their former company basically financially ruined the community from that point on because they helped fund and get sponsors for a lot of the major tournaments. After they shut down a lot of tournaments that where once under the Smash World Tour or Panda cup couldn't afford to run anymore for the next years and had to shut down as well (Including Beyond the Summit) so it was basically a trickle down effect from the top dogs to the small local scenes, especially cuz after this PLUS the fighter pass 2 characters making the game not fun to play anymore many moved on which meant not as many people entering tourneys which meant tourneys where losing sponsors which meant smaller prize pots which meant less money in the scene. (This is coming from someone who worked at Panda Global)
That's what I would say those are the REAL reasons Smash Ultimate is on a downfall because at this moment most of the casuals have kinda moved on since other things have come out plus this game being nearly 6 years old at this time and the only thing really keeping the game alive and in the public eye is the competitive scene which is dying off because of the reasons stated above.
Again you had good points but you def missed some crucial things that happened. Would def recommend doing more research or reaching out to a competitive player/someone who has been in the scene a while because they can give you really good insight to the ongoings in the community.

My main issues with Smash Ultimate from what I remember:
The game barely felt like an upgrade from Smash 3DS/Wii U. Hardly any brand new stages, items and characters. Of course the DLC characters and stages helped.
Playing online, which was far worse than the previous Smash games. Delayed inputs and I remember there were plenty of times where it clearly looked like I should have been able to punish an opponent who missed an attack or grab and was left wide open, such as a very strong but slow attack or grab. But they somehow manage to get me first, which wouldn't have happened in past Smash games. Especially from characters who were heavyweights.
When playing online, many characters attacks or grabs seem extremely difficult to counter unless you maybe had a decent projectile. It often felt like there was no cooldown time for missing. Their hit box seemed to last longer than it should have.
I heard online connections are somewhat better now from a patch?

I'd argue practically changing the entire lighting/art style of the game, mechanics like jab locking, jostling, and dodging being completely overhauled, the AI being drastically buffed, doing a lot of character reworks to make almost all of them viable (not always in tournaments because that shouldn't be 100% of the focus in a party game), and having different physics than the last game are more than a lot of AAA developers would try to do nowadays.

right now my only real problems with smash ultimate, as a whole are honestly pretty minor ones that.. just got more annoying over time.
But i'm also a solo player.. I play the game normally in places with out internet. So my kind of problems don't always match the problems Multiplayer and competitive players have.
The Biggest problem.. honestly for me.. is the lack of single player modes. On one hand having a special arcade ladder for EVERY CHARACTER is really cool... but at the same time you don't really have a random classic mode you can just hop into. The amount of content is simultaneously massive in terms of characters, stages, and items but then lacking in terms of ACTUAL modes of game. Sometimes I still play Smash 4 3ds just for modes like Smash Run. Allstar mode, Target smash, So many goofy game styles that feel special and FUN that are just missing from ultimate. I WANNA SMASH CRATES AS TERRY! I want a constantly evolving All star mode that kept sending people at you in the YEAR they were first created...
Another problem is an honestly super minor annoyance.. the Game not keeping track of who I AM PLAYING. Needing to pick my character and my color over and over is a pain...
and then editing the rules can be a major annoyance instead of just basic settings like in past games.

Nah joker is busted, but not because of arsene. It's his base form that's busted. it's too powerful, it racks up all of the damage for arsene to just clean up(also doing damage and taking damage both contribute to pulling him out)
      Also the frame three counter.

Pandemic was a vibe kill. And rules from Nintendo sucked. But you gloss over some community bullshit that ruined things. Like the whole situation with Captain Zach and Nairo. Downfall of ZeRo with the accusations he faced. And Samsora. Honestly these three scandals ripped the community apart. In addition were all the stupid nerfs Nintendo implemented like nerfing ZSS, Ivysaur, Olimar and then introducing characters like Steve who just trash everyone.
I just want 2019 Smash Ultimate back. The Ultimate that was on a meteorite rise with a vibrant competitive scene.

Thing is, controversies aside this inevitably happens to every fighting game. They get replaced by the next installment and honestly Ultimate going for 6 years is pretty dang impressive.
In my opinion the bigger concern is how the next game in the series will do. Relations with the community snd nintendo are more strained than ever considering Nintendo shutting down so many community events and adding overly strict and rigid rules which make yhings a lot harder. Nintendo has sabotaged the community many many times and a lot of people are sick of it. I dont understand ehy nintendo hates competitive Smash so much, you should be free to play however you want.
Im hopeful for the next installment but Smash's future especially the community for anything that isnt Melee ks pretty up in the air

I'm a huge smash fan, but honestly, I never liked ultimate. It was cool they added so many characters, but the gameplay sucks. The inputs are delayed, there's still so many bugs, and the online is garbage with terrible net code. There's more, but these are the 3 biggest problems that kill the game to me

You're a good narrator, and your editing is solid. You definitely have the talent and skills to make these videos work. With that said, I believe the direction you took this video is a bit lacking, to say the least. This entire video is essentially summarizing the timeline that (at the very least) a fair portion of the audience watching this already knows. Most of this video is a recap where you're taking an almost reporter-like approach to discussing this with very little of your own personal thoughts and feelings which would have made it more interesting. Plus, you kind of just shoehorn Nintendo getting involved being the "definitive" thing that killed the scene when it seemed like the Panda situation had more of an impact than that did (and other things). You also neglected to mention multiple important things that I think contributed to this game falling off.
    - Once again, the whole Panda situation.
    - The impact of Fighter Pass 2 (You brushed over a decent amount of it without really explaining certain things that you could have expanded on)
    - You mentioned it, but I felt like you could have elaborated more about the online and its impact, because this singlehandedly turned a lot of people away during the pandemic.
    - Competitive players thinking the competitive scene and meta were stale
    - Competitive and casual players not liking a lot of the characters' movesets and thinking the directions weren't good- this is a problem that more and more people are calling out with time. A lot of the characters are stale and boring to a lot of people now.
    - Time. The game was 5 and a half years old when you made this video. Player bases shrink over time just like how TV show viewership drops after it ends, or movies get less viewers over time on streaming services. It's old, and people move on. I know that's a bit of a boring answer, but it's important, and neglecting to mention this at all feels like a cop-out.
Like I said, the way you talk feels natural and nice, and the editing does everything it needs to. It's solid from a technical perspective, and I think summarizing things in a way for people unfamiliar with the game's cycle is fine, but some stuff gets lingered on, while other stuff is brushed over. I'm not saying you had to mention everything I listed, but neglecting to really go into ANY of it while most of the video is a recap just makes for a clunky presentation. Yes, some of them are opinionated, but they're common enough opinions among the fanbase that they're worth considering.
I don't mean to sound to negative and hateful, but I wanted to summarize the thoughts and not just leave a comment saying "Video bad because [insert vague reason here]" because I feel like that helps nobody.

Smash Ultimate is really a hard game to pin down my stance on definitively. There are good points and an equal amount (if not more) of bad points. I don't follow the tournament scene, so my perspective is on the game itself with minimal community perspective.
To get the community perspective out of the way, I became numb a long while back to the fact that none of my hopes got in and don't look back to before then fondly, if ever. Sure, I'm impressed that I was able to successfully guess that Banjo & Kazzoie, Sora, a rep from ARMS, and a rep from Xenoblade 2 would be included, and I thought it was genius to include Terry to tribute how King of Fighters 95 inspired Sakurai to model a beginner friendly system to Super Smash Bros. in the first place, but the atmosphere of Ultimate didn't feel as fun as previous entries, especially when speculation became toxic much too quickly. I lost count how much harassment I and a few of my friends had to deal with just over speculation, the worst of which came from Minecraft & Shovel Knight zealots. (It didn't help that I already didn't have positive opinions of those franchises before Smash.)
The "Everyone is Here" hook looked nice on paper and for the roster, but what fun is a massive roster without interesting things to do with all the playable reps? I get that Smash is a fighting game series, but there was more than just fighting to do in previous entries, so that's not a strong excuse. Ultimate arguably has the worst "Games & More" selection in the franchise, even considering that 64 only had Classic, Versus, Break the Targets, & Board the Platforms. With the innovations that Melee, Brawl, & 4 brought on, it was sad to see Ultimate backpedal so much, making it feel hollow in some regard. Steve was easily the worst addition to the roster due to exploiting bugs in the stage reprogramming (which was made to accommodate his inclusion, no less). I would have said Kazuya was the worst, but being Bayonetta on steroids is child's play compared to screwing with the game's code.
Speaking of hollow, World of Light is easily the worst Adventure Mode in the series, bar none, and part of the blame lies on Ultimate's key collectible: Spirits. I get that Trophies were becoming too resource-intensive, but the solution shouldn't have been pulling stock PNG's of the characters & items. Brawl's Stickers may have done that too, but they were supplemental collectibles as Trophies coexisted in that game. With how Spirits are on their own and don't even have as much as a short bio to let players learn about certain series, it makes the feature feel lazy and uninspired, especially due to Spirit Battles fluctuating in quality from decent to abysmal. Plus, it sucked that there were some third party series that only got representation through this half-baked feature that felt like an overglorified Google image search.
Also, after being shown it after Joker's inclusion, I can say that I hate Persona 5 and the entire Megami Tensei franchise, so thanks for bringing to light a franchise that I should avoid, Smash Ultimate.

I like how it took 11 minutes to finally get the point of the "production", only for the points to be "I didn't like Byleth", some really bad drama (that is really bad, don't get me wrong), and tournament guidelines. No points about the actual game itself, like the current meta game. The only points were new fighters and outside factors regarding the game's competitive scene. It's a really lackluster picture of this game's downfall honestly. There is a lot more to it; feels like an outsider's shot in the dark on why SSBU is having problems rn.
I also especially liked how you pointed out how good other fighting game online experiences were in comparison to SSBU's online, although the fighting game genre is infamous for having the worse online experiences in the entire gaming scene. It was actually post-SSBU when fighting games finally accepted newer forms of online play (specifically Rollback). You might want to research before making massive claims like, "SSBU is the ONLY bad online fighting game" next time.
Gotta be honest man, this video was a huge waste of my time. As a huge SSBU fan, I learned absolutely nothing from this video. This all is very harsh to say, but I say it only to put the flaws of this video up front so you can improve. Next time, focus more on an objective reasoning behind your point and provide evidence for it instead of just saying what you feel and calling it a day.

The only thing that would kill ultimate is the fact that most people want smash to be a competitive only game instead of the wacky “holy shit it’s the blocky dude from Minecraft” smack down game that has a vibrant and cheerful theme to it. Every now and then there will be some people in the community also tend to gate-keep the idea of new players and fun, this combined with the fact that the average quick play match is either a lag fest or a fight against a dude sweating his nuts off because he doesn’t want to go pro in the big leagues. It’s kinda like a 35 year old man playing little league soccer because he doesn’t want his ego to be shattered by other grown men who have trained years to join a high paying team. In other words; it’s not the game it’s certain players that don’t want to have fun in a mind breaking crossover fighting game or just hate the fact that a certain character got in fair and square (I understand why people hate bayoneta’s rigged vote). I forgot to mention that there are also some people that straight up send death threats if you disagree with a character vote and the fact that someone will hate on you for playing a character that you like (an example is Steve) which is an issue because people are banning certain characters and stages because a few people had a skill issue while playing against a certain character or on a specific stage.
