The big advantage you have now is that you can repair the whole damn car by yourself. And even if it had a lot of problems you can now fix a car that should usually be a good one for longer distances, comfotable yet agile, and also has enough power, features, space...
The L322 looks mighty reliable now :) Which is A shame as I have an L322 and that's what brought me here. I still watch your videos as they are very interesting and well filmed.
Its amazing how the BMW quality went downhill from the older M57 engine......I have a 2006 E91 Touring on 154,000 miles and other than a dodgy throttle flap that gave me many DPF headaches it has never missed a beat!! I was planning to get rid of it but to be fair it pulls like a train has great MPG and just does what i need it to. As always good informative vids here.
There’s some wisdom there mate 👍 I’ve come to realise that the newer the diesel car (most modern engines) the least reliable they become at higher mileage. Diesels used to be bulletproof for high-milers but with the extra emissions tech these days they just don’t last as long....
Agree fully many diesels not reaching much above 100k niw .....did u have overheating ussues on this car ,? Thinking i have a bad cooler tbh @nutjob5705
Good job done once again 👍 I know this car turning out to be a money pit but for us subscribers your videos are great for diy repairs, after watching you do it I probably would attempt to do all the jobs you did apart from the timing chain. That was a big old job. Hope your getting something of RUclips to help with the repair cost of this car.
Hi everyone! Thank you for the video Sir, just got that component changed by BMW, But the whole story is that I got a bit of a nightmare going on with a 2014 F11 520d N47D20 with 130000 km... Engine lamp and warning for driveline shows up for short time and then disappears completely, and comes back randomly and not so often, and no particular reason, just going cruise... Fault code 244C00 showing up at diagnosis. Shop did troubleshooting, checked for leakage, checked the EGR, checked DPF (particle filter) and could not find a problem. They found the turbo had a huge play in its shaft, they showed me and we compared to another turbo, and confirmed it was a lot a play on mine. They said it could be the source and with so much play one should change the turbo anyway due to risk for oil leakage - which we did for a refurbished one. But the issued continued with the warning. They took in the car again, and checked once again the lines for leakage, now using a smoke machine. They found a small leakage in the cooler “flex” metal pipe. And could replace the whole assembly (but I guess not the EGR - need to double check) for a new one. And bingo, after about 80 km the warning “Driveline” came back again. This is a typical BMW fault code nightmare again… I saw this video and thought perhaps anyone can give a hint on where to look at next??? (Sorry for the long novel…)
My F31 was recalled for this. There was nothing wrong with the car to start with. Now I have a coolant leak on the exaust gas cooler. Bless, cars are such fun
My 2014 320d was checked and passed a couple of years ago. No symptoms but discovered they'd recalled it again recently. Just got it back today and they've replaced the EGR by looks of it.
Re your dpf, I’m sure you have but it’s worth reading the manual to see the various conditions that need to be met in order that an active regen occurs, these big low revving auto diesels can be difficult to operate within the required parameters under normal driving conditions even on longer fast runs. That used egr looked spotless, nice find.
Can I just ask how many miles this car has done? Watching through your videos I think I'm glad I stuck to my 525d e60. Shes an old girl now 2004 but she goes strong and more important timing chain is still the right way round 😂. I admire the the DIY jobs you have done you honestly saved thousands 👍🏾👍🏾
It’s currently on about 168k I think. It’s got the ‘feel’ of being a money-pit, but since I’ve done so many jobs on it I’d like to get over the 200k mark 👍
Wow realistically 168k is not actually as many as I thought. I was thinking 200k tone honest. I had a e46 with 330d with 270k before I got rid with no issues other than the body dying of rust 😂🤣. You need to go old school mate I know they don't look the business but save you a load of hours of DIY 👍🏾
Hi, Really appreciate your videos for the guidance and love how you get to the bottom of a problem. Makes it easy for a person like me to tell the garage what exactly to replace or repair. I have a 2011 530d. My question is , What is the normal replacement time for an EGR VALVE ? I got mine replaced from a BMW specialist only 4 months ago. Now the car is throwing codes of EGR valve again ? codes : 255B00, 282BOO, 272FOO, 272EOO Thanks in advance
Great job, Nut Job. The last thing you have left - high pressure fuel pump. If this starts generating metal particles then you risk damaging the injectors and the whole system needs to be swapped out (fuel tank, common rail, all the fuel pipes etc).
This part will crack again as second hand from my previous experience, partly blocked dpf causes to much back pressure and the crimp pipes are too weak so break along with other parts such as turbo and inlet manafold after my last BMW 520d it's my last time ill buy a BMW.
Nice video! Got a pre machined 2 mm stainless steel plate with ears that slides on the bolts at the outlet of the EGR cooler. Blends off that pesky system. Will get a fault code and check engine light though, haven`t figured out that part yet. Need to get hold of a guy with tuning capabilities of ECU for that.
It would be interesting to know at what mileage these EGR units start to fail. I have a 4 year old 335d (only 32,000 miles) and have noticed fumes in the car recently. Out of the blue I have had a recall notice. Its booked in next week but I am guessing the unit will just be checked by BMW, rather than automatically replaced. I wish I were as savvy as you. Interesting video. Thank you.
Mine was also inspected by BMW prior to this and they found nothing wrong. Clearly they didn’t look in the right places... but if I remember correctly the recall notice was actually focussed on the EGR cooler, so I suppose they were only looking for coolant leaks. Either way this bypass tube seems to fail on all units eventually, although I couldn’t say at what mileage really.
The track on that EGR mechanism often needs a little deburring with some 400 grit, clean with brake cleaner and lube with high temp grease - oil and normal grease will carbonise over time and stick up the mechanism again.
I am senior bmw tech. This would be covered as part of the recall for coolant leak of cooler. Part of the check is to check the bypass pipe. If cracked can be claimed via goodwill. Good job changing it but you could have had a modified later version for free. The second hand one is highly likely to leak coolant.
I would tend to agree with you. It went for its inspection recall at BMW Shrewsbury a month or two ago & they thought everything was fine... The path of least resistance (& speed) seemed best to just replace the unit myself since this is my daily driver.
I have a 330D which had the recall and my EGR cooler was inspected but not replaced. The recall is now not on the car anymore as it was inspected and had no leaks at that time. A year later I have coolant loss and smelling fumes and wet charged pipes. BMW wants £198 for fault diagnosis to check the car. Amazing...I am thinking to do the same and get a used one of ebay for half that fault diagnosis cost and fit it myself. what are your taughts/advice?
Well, that’s what I did. You will probably need to remove the front slam panel which runs across the top of the radiator & this should give you better space to get hands & tools in there. Just be careful which unit you buy if it’s off EBay because they all suffer from cracks in the bypass tube eventually, so one that looks pretty clean from a lower-mileage car is a good bet. I’m sure there’s also a set of EGR ‘adaptations’ to reset (as with everything BMW), however I didn’t do this.
Nice little video and helpful in many ways. But why did you not just do an EGR disable? Solves so many problems, and there's so many pro's? Subscribed 👍
Great work but I’d be pressing bmw on how they missed the cracks during the recall inspection, they should have covered the replacement of this part (new parts and labour)....that said you’d probably not have the car for a month as they have such a backlog of these to change.
I have a faint diesel smell in my 525d f10 msport 3.0d checked diesel return pipes bone dry this could be my issue it's a 10 / 2010 built car so bmw say no recall on that year cars 2011 plate cars done 154k and it's only issue I have. Just subscribed great vids
No, it was standard. They break chains because they’re just not designed to last unfortunately. With the chain being at the back, and not a duplex arrangement, and with the pathetic size of the chain... I expect they only realistically expect them to do maybe 150k miles and then beyond that they don’t care.
No problem 👍 I’m not saying they’re bad engines, but they don’t seem to be designed to last as long as older BMW engines. Changing the top timing chain (the one that usually breaks) before it breaks is actually not a massive job.
Thanks for the pointer - I just went back to check, but I think that’s just a spot of coolant that dripped on the belt when I removed the cooler. I wasn’t planning to change the belt because I inspected it when I did the timing chain & it looked ok 👍
Hi very useful and interesting videos and thanks for sharing it I have 530d 2014 and few months ago I had egr issue snd was reducing coolant all the time and then replaced egr by bmw recall now I have this issue Coolant temperature drops down when I drive after little while and the radiator fan runs I can feel engine heat in cabin and when coolant temperature drops or early morning cool start up I hear engine clicking noise and with acceleration the noise gets very noticeable. Do you have any ideas what it could be?
I’m not sure, but losing coolant is definitely not good. Have you removed the under trays & put paper/cardboard down to check for a leak? Best case would be a leak from a damaged hose or connector. I presume BMW replaced the whole EGR cooler assembly & not just the EGR valve? It’s the cooler which is the part of concern as it’ll lose coolant & eventually melt your intake manifold... There’s a number of places coolant can be lost, but I’d check the basics first (pipe leaks). Do you get any kind of white exhaust smoke?
Nut Job hi thanks for reply coolant isn’t leaking after replacing egr The car make noise at cool start and after driving for a hours the coolant temperature drops and radiator fan runs fast.
Nut Job hi just did scanned on ISTA I get this error code 2c2200 coolant temperature sensor upstryof low temperature EGR cooler, coolant temperature signals, implausible with each other
Thanks for the video very usefull, I,m looking to do the same job on a F11 N47. Do you have to change the gasgets on the exhast connections or is it not worth it, also how do the coolant connections fit into the block are there O rings or anything else needs replacing.
In my experience I didn’t replace any gaskets at all. The 2 coolant connections use short plastic tubes (~50mm long) with captive O-rings, so they should still seal nicely. My exhaust manifold to EGR connection doesn’t use a gasket. The EGR to intake manifold uses a thin metal gasket (not multi-layer), so I re-used that.
@@Nut_Job. Thanks for the info was very useful at the time, don't know who posted the emoji above but it was not me just someone with the same username
Please cannot delete this EGR ??? I had before e60 530d and I was already deleted there , I don’t know if I can also delete in my f10 530d? Please help
Yes, it can be deleted (mapped out from ECU) but it will affect the DPF regeneration... that’s why I replaced my EGR rather than delete it. You could cut the DPF open, remove the contents and weld it back up (to pass inspection), but this is breaking the law in most places. I prefer to get it all working correctly like it was designed 👍
@@Nut_Job. I myself will probably do block off plates and map it out .. or it will cause clogging in the intake manifold again. What part of MOT would this fail? Visual or scan? EGR is not really active for emissions tests or MOT is it? Just curious here. For DPF, does EGR absence stop DPF regeneration? I'll probably just do downpipe on mine Love all the videos you take the time to produce ... thank you very much!
If we’re talking about UK MOTs then as far as I know they are just visual checks to confirm they are still there & haven’t been tampered with. Mapping out the EGR will affect DPF regeneration & may cause it to block quicker - so often people will cut it open, gut the filter & weld back together so it appears intact for the MOT. If your engine is in good order it should still pass the smoke/emissions test without the DPF... but it is quite obvious from the look & sound of the exhaust what’s been done 😉👍
Hello. Thank you for this video. I would ask you if you know if the date, 12.05.24 it have some meaning? It is a fabrication date or the expiring date of the egr?
I've just ordered a new one for my BMW. Issue is, its leaking out of the top where it bolts on to the coolant temperature part. There are no cracks on the part at all. So I can't figure out why it's leaking. The bolts don't need tightening as they won't physically tighten any more than they already are. So I can't figure out why it's leaking from where it is. Nonetheless, I've ordered a new one, very very reluctantly, I may add. This car has been issue after issue.
Were you getting any faults logged with the leaking corrugated sections? Mine is logging an intermittent 290900 fault code which is 'measured air mass compared with calculated air mass too high'. It has now started throwing the yellow engine management light on the dash which clears but comes back a few days later. No fumes in my cabin so may not be exactly the same issue but thought I would ask
Just had mine replaced under recall.. had no symptoms. No I get a smell coming through the vents in cold start... Smells a bit like brake cleaner or something.. any ideas?
Can you do an EGR delete on thatl?? People have no issues EGR deleting E46 diesels, apparently it doesnt affect MOT and you dont have to deal with all of that nightmarish bs!
Yes, you can remove the EGR & cooler but you also need to ‘map’ it out so the ECU doesn’t try opening/closing it. You will also need to remove the DPF because it won’t regenerate properly without the EGR and this will fail an MOT. You could remove & gut the DPF, then weld it back up so an MOT inspector can’t see... I’m just not keen on risking all that (plus the potential fine ££ if caught), plus it’s bad for everyone’s health 💨
Hello ! I have a Bmw f01 740d xdrive 2011 and I understood that these engines had problems! I have friends who have had problems with this engine! What can you tell me? Thanks
Yes, mine had already been inspected & apparently passed...? I couldn’t be bothered to pursue it with them, so I just replaced it myself. This should last a while
Nut Job I pressed the woman on the phone but she didn’t even know what an EGR was. I assume mine will be given a clean bill of health but will corrode soon enough. Anyway I might remove and map it out if it easy on my b47 engine. The os wife’s and only does town driving so it prob needs to go, even though I like the environment
Could someone please give my any ideas. My car was pulled by a BMW dealer cus they was going to do a ”exhaust gas recirulation cooler. Everything was changed! Drove the car home (25) mins and it warned me for low oil, pulled the hood and its litterally spitting oil under, could they have forgotten anything to put back or what? BMW say they did nothing wrong.
I actually didn’t need to replace any gaskets. There is a single metal gasket on the intake manifold side (not a multi layer gasket), and the turbo side doesn’t need one. I reused the coolant O-rings on the feed/return pipe connectors.
@@Nut_Job. great thanks mate, so you think you can get away with reusing them? I tried to find the o ring part numbers but can't seem to locate them online anywhere
From memory, they are just rubber O-rings & I’ve got a bit kit of various sizes I could have used to replace them. They were in good condition though - not worn/squashed/perished so I reused them & had no leaks.
So EGR's now even need coolers, bloody joke, I'm going to convert my P38 to run on water as there seems to be an abundance of the stuff around here. Is that knackered part not covered by the BMW recall.
P0101 is related to a problem with your MAF sensor. Have you checked this out or cleaned it? There’s a number of things you can check to fix your problem. Check out this webpage to see what common issues & fixes are: www.samarins.com/diagnose/p0101.html
I saw your video about MAF and MAP sensors. I’ve changed MAP, cleaned MAP and still same issue. I’ve found on other forum that one guy got broken pipes on cooler like on yours and he have got same error code P0101. That’s Why I am aked you about any other symptomps except that smell. I have hot weird nois when accelerating. Thats like air leaking from somewhere so it could be that cooler as well. Need to check it out
Have you removed your intake manifold recently? If it’s not properly re-installed then it could be giving you a leak, although I’d expect you to have other error codes in that case like P0069. Also check the joint between the EGR and intake manifold in case it has melted. It’s also possible that your PCV valve is stuck open - that’s a straightforward replacement job (cheap enough though)
I have got the same thing happened to me, issues with EGR, checked by BMW in August 2019 they said everything is good, but call me Yesterday that we are changing it book your car in Lets see
Had no check engine light. Can’t remember how much I paid exactly, but I usually hold out for a bargain on used parts. Don’t think I paid more than £70 for this
I did consider it... but it will complicate the DPF regeneration. So that means you’ll really need to do a DPF delete too (which is illegal) and the exhaust sound is quite noticeable... so I opted to just keep things OEM for now 👍
Dude, are you breaking your car on purpose to make YT videos? I mean damn, everything seems to be broken on your car. My second hand 2007 335d with supposedly 170.000mls (probably double than that) still has most of the factory parts on it and everything is working fine. Love your videos anyways :)
You will only really need a standard ratchet set which has hex bits & torx bits. I had to use my smallest set due to the tight space available at the front of the engine.
Another insightful video. Did you not fancy removing it completely? I have the e61 I am contemplating it. Did it on my Mondeo before. Ran cleaner. And I use Carly. You can regen your dpf through it. Not sure how thorough it is tho. Cheers.
I did consider it (mapping out, not removing because it won’t pass it’s MOT) but the cracked bypass pipe was a defect I wasn’t happy to leave. Then there’s the DPF regen that you mentioned... you could try to gut the DPF and weld it up so it can’t be seen etc... but I just thought it best to stay fairly stock for now 👍
Hola amigo saludos desde Colombia Me gustaria saber por que se daña la valvula EGR Tengo un BMW X3 2.0 MODELO 2010 TIENE 29000 KM mil gracias por la respuesta
My 2017 320d has had 3 EGR related recalls all when the car has between 30-40k miles. At 36k miles, the EGR valve failed. Cost almost £700 to me. Now the cooler has failed. BMW still want to charge me for a new one, dispite signing the cooler off as good just a couple of months ago. Anyone looking to buy a used beemer? I want rid of it. It's my second and last.
It's all the emissions crap that makes them un-reliable at higher mileages, nothing really to do with the quality of the engines... EGR fills them up with carbon.. STOP-START stretches/snaps timing chains..
Remove it, using a software so it will stay it the place and then inlet manifold blanks on the swirl flaps along with a dpf. WILL get clean engine no faults a no problems more mpg.
Awesome job sir you are a true mechanic and enthusiast we F10 owners appreciate your expertise and insights in your videos.

Nut Job hi thanks for reply coolant isn’t leaking after replacing egr
The car make noise at cool start and after driving for a hours the coolant temperature drops and radiator fan runs fast.
Nut Job hi just did scanned on ISTA I get this error code
2c2200 coolant temperature sensor upstryof low temperature EGR cooler, coolant temperature signals, implausible with each other
Sounds like a thermostat or water pump issue possibly then?
Nut Job I thought so bought yesterday waterpump and thermostat I’ll update you how it goes
Thanks
Nut Job thank you for your answer 🙏
I'll probably just do downpipe on mine
Love all the videos you take the time to produce ... thank you very much!
I think that means it might have been manufactured in 2012
I've just ordered a new one for my BMW.
You are super knowledgeable, are you an engineer?
Some suggested to get rid of the entire GR system. I don't know where you guys live, but in California, if you do that you won't pass the Smog test.
It would make the car not legal for road use in the UK.
Did you reset the adaptations after doing this?
Hello,
You remove the valve before instalation? I have the same scenario and I wander If I need to remove egr valve and adapt before plug into cooler.
How is the swirl flap delete working out ?
It’s completely fine mate, no perceived difference at all 👍
@@Nut_Job. good news.
Hello,
Where can i find that piece to block the coolant to exit the motor when you disconnect the cooler?
Thanks
I found mine on eBay
@@Nut_Job. Thanks.
Do you know how is it called to look for it?
Look for an “EGR blanking kit” for your engine/year and there should be a few available 👍
What do you think is it possible to pull dpf out over the top of engine?
Gordon Bird couldn’t agree more
Great videos really helpful
Save the old EGR valve, it’s likely sticking due to internal carbon buildup, which can be cleaned out.
I actually cleaned the sooty part of the EGR when I had the cylinder head off... it’s something else causing the arm to stick 😬
Hello !
I have a Bmw f01 740d xdrive 2011 and I understood that these engines had problems!
I have friends who have had problems with this engine!
What can you tell me?
Thanks
Just be aware of a cracked exhaust manifold fairly common on the 3L diesels.
I had the manifold off recently whilst repairing a snapped timing chain & it was fine then, but will keep an eye on it 👍
Did it work,! ? or do we have to wait until the next exciting episode LOL........
Yeah it works fine 😂
Lovely Jubbly matey, another money saving tip in a kind of way, Is it a design or ware fault?
I’d say it’s a bit of both. This EGR/cooler has seen a lot of life, but the place mine cracked appears to be common across the N47/N57 engines 🙁
Im having mine replaced by bmw as it had a recall apparently so its all free egr cooler & monifold
Well done 👍👍👍
Bmw is recalling these but will only replace after visual inspection...what are they looking for, what if mine is low mileage with a bad valve
Did you have to replace any seals or o rings when you did this job?
Chris Greenwood egr coolers have been about for about 10 years.
86andyw I must be well out of touch, I own air cooled motor bikes, and spanner on my old ranger Rover p38, that's as modern as I get.
Hi buddy. Have you got any other problems except that smell? I got error code P0101. Checked everything and that’s the last part which left to check.
It’s also possible that your PCV valve is stuck open - that’s a straightforward replacement job (cheap enough though)
was this not covered under the global recall?
Thanks 👍
Bmw down this as a recall seems like they nipped something as there’s oil all over my injector closer to the cooler and it’s like air is escaping
I had my Bmw f10 for recall and the replace it for free. My car pulls much better and faster
I have got the same thing happened to me, issues with EGR, checked by BMW in August 2019 they said everything is good, but call me Yesterday that we are changing it book your car in Lets see
How much did u pay for that egr set and did u have a engine check light beforehand. If u did did it go of when you changed the unit?
Had no check engine light. Can’t remember how much I paid exactly, but I usually hold out for a bargain on used parts. Don’t think I paid more than £70 for this
@@Nut_Job. nice thank you for the info and keep it up man. Alot to be learned from watching your vids. Big up
Is there no need to run EGR adaptions to reset the ECU?
What was the fault code was u getting
Why not a EGR Delete?
I did consider it... but it will complicate the DPF regeneration. So that means you’ll really need to do a DPF delete too (which is illegal) and the exhaust sound is quite noticeable... so I opted to just keep things OEM for now 👍
Dude, are you breaking your car on purpose to make YT videos? I mean damn, everything seems to be broken on your car. My second hand 2007 335d with supposedly 170.000mls (probably double than that) still has most of the factory parts on it and everything is working fine. Love your videos anyways :)
Bro bmw you can be lucky and not I have the feeling. On mine one thing goes after the other ffs
I feel ya... 😫
What is playing on the back ground?
Couldn't you have this done free with the recall?
I took it in at the time & they said it was fine… 🙄
What tools did you require please
You will only really need a standard ratchet set which has hex bits & torx bits. I had to use my smallest set due to the tight space available at the front of the engine.
My cars what you pointed flirflap actuator from that thing my cae leaks oil what could it be,
Even though I have an Audi, apparently I’m first on this vid
😂 awesome
İs this a metal pipe ? Can it be welded ?
The bypass pipe is metal but it’s quite thin. I’m not a very good welder but if you had a good quality TIG welder then it might be possible.
@@Nut_Job. I guess I am gonna have to try it. Complete cooler is very expensive here.
You could possibly wrap the pipe in one of those exhaust repair tape? It should seal it & work at the high exhaust temperatures.
Then there’s the DPF regen that you mentioned... you could try to gut the DPF and weld it up so it can’t be seen etc... but I just thought it best to stay fairly stock for now 👍
Hola amigo saludos desde Colombia
Me gustaria saber por que se daña la valvula EGR
Tengo un BMW X3 2.0 MODELO 2010 TIENE 29000 KM
mil gracias por la respuesta
Happy days :)
What's km have in your Bmw?
About 265k
top man
Should’ve just fully removed the egr cooler and blanked it off
I considered it...
I think maybe it's time to say goodbye to that BMW it seems like it's possessed
It seems to like testing me! 😂
Think the 2.0 litres are shit compared to the 3.0 litres
You said that you used your special tool, I thought you had used your nose!!
Remove it, using a software so it will stay it the place and then inlet manifold blanks on the swirl flaps along with a dpf. WILL get clean engine no faults a no problems more mpg.
Tell the truth you wrecked it when stripping the motor down lol
To be honest I’m pretty mad at myself that I didn’t take the time to inspect it when it was off... 😫
Anyway, it’s sorted now 🤪
EGR of
You have so many problems with your BMW why you dont sell it
I can offer you good price for that problem car
You should start wotk in BMW like head engineer you can repair everything on that car
What a money pit
BMW change this in Germany for free
There is an EGR recall in the U.K. too but mine wasn’t covered apparently...
Bmw 😂😂😂
