  • Lighting and Nest automation voice controlled with Amazon's Echo, Alexa, using a WINK hub, and IFTTT.
    Please feel free to ask questions, this setup is really very simple, and Alexa's voice control actually becomes second nature. You find yourself using it all the time. Its almost second natural to use voice control to control the house, which unfortunately makes the Wink relay on the wall much less used.

    Great vid I just ordered my echo and my harmony hub... Maybe you can help me with a question. Suppose I have some lights with wemo switches and some lights with Phillips hue bulb and some light switched control by ir through Harmony hub can I make a custom command "alexa turn off all lights" instead of having to say 3 different commands using 3 different hubs

      Thanks Mark. I have a Luviton in wall dimmer switch controlling the light. Its a Leviton DZMX1 bought at the Home Depot. www.leviton.com/OA_HTML/ProductDetail.jsp?partnumber=DZMX1-1LZ§ion=66154

    Mike,
    I have the wink and Echo and GE bulbs, and the Nest products, the wink sees them all but when I discover devices with Echo it only finds the GE buld. How did you get Echo to control the Nest Thermostat and Smoke detector?

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  8 лет назад

      The Wink natively only controls lights. Bridge I'm using is IFTTT.com go check out the website. It gives more control using the echo to devices amazon does not support. The "trigger" command triggers IFTTT commands. lots of documents on it if you Google IFTTT and echo or alexa.

    Nice to have money....I'm usually yelling at my kids to shut the lights! 😆

      +gemster18 I got so tired of turning the lights off after my family this was my solution. That and I guess the tech nerd in me is just coming out because its fun. We're both very hard working for everything we have, and we take it all with a lot of pride. Despite how it looks, most of this was pretty cheap and bought over time. The echo was saved gift cards from firends and family over birthdays and Christmas. The hub was a christmas gift. Others I bought here and there. The switches are the most expensive, but even in this there are 4 in wall switches, about 12 smart bulbs and a quirky genius power strip.

    When I ask Alexa to change Nest temperature, the screen stays off so NO idea if the temperature has changed, without picking up phone or walking up to Nest is the normal? I have farsight current temp set.

      Alexa now integrates directly with wink, just discover it. Issue for me was it picked up the thermostat twice, once from the wink hub and one from nest. Tell alexa to forget the Nest (wink hub) one. When you say a command it should be, "Alexa, change Nest thermostat to 72 degrees" and she should respond with "changing (Nest name) Nest Thermostat to 72 degrees" Then you should see the nest light up and change. I no longer use IFTTT to control the nest.

    Why am I waiting for Alexa to get fed up with you telling her what to do and start yelling at you? Lol.

      Haha I know! lots of commanding, unlike my wife Alexa has no issues with.

    so a colleague of mine at work has nest. does not use echo. apparently issue with having a 5 wire or 8 wire system? if j may ask which do you have on thermostat. amy issue with alexa running that ?

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  7 лет назад +1

      Try this, nest.com/widget/compatibility/ is a wire compatibility checker. Mine was pretty standard for southern homes, I think a 5 or 6 wire. Once the nest is powered and online on WiFi, you create a nest account, and just add the thermostat to the echo. Simple as that. Then the echo can control it.

    Hey Mike I saw in another comment you mentioned things would get laggy using ifttt. Now that it's been some time are you still using this set up? How's it been holding up

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  8 лет назад

      I use IFTTT now only for shortcuts, which have been pretty smooth. But, since I dont use voice control for shortcuts often I can really say if performance has improved.

    Do you find the IFTTT commands laggy sometimes?

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  8 лет назад

      +Darwin Sayo Absolutely. Sometimes close to a minute. Its gotten worse, basically to the point I only use Echo's commands directly. Now that echo connects to Nest, I really have no need to use IFTTT. Hopefully soon, echo will support WINK shortcuts.

    so the ceiling fan, how did you do that part.. I am going to do this stuff in my house

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  7 лет назад

      Ceiling fan is ran through the relay. The box the relay was installed in controlled the fan, one for the light and one for the fan itself. The relay took over both as smart switches. Cant control fan speed but basic on/off.

    what is Wink and IFTTT?

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  7 лет назад

      Wink is the hub. A network device that talks to all my smart devices and allows control. Some things are not Wink compatible so you can a free internet service / app called IFTTT. Means If Then Then That. So the hub and other devices talk to this service and you can integrate more devices to do things automatically. ifttt.com & wink.com

      Its cool for sure. Look at the Wink user group in facebook, ask to join, lots of knowledge there. But really, but a wink hub and some smart bulbs, cree's are good, and play with it. Its cheap to get into and you'll love it.
