  • In this video, we capture three steam locomotives on three different railtours heading to York in an all LMS fest!
    Featuring on these tours were:
LMS Rebuilt Royal Scot No. 46115 Scots Guardsman hauling The Settle-Carlisle Santa Special from Carlisle to York & return.
LMS Black Five No. 44871 (Standing in for 6233 Duchess of Sutherland) on The Christmas White Rose from London Kings Cross to York & return via Lincoln & Peterborough.
LMS Black Five No. 45231 The Sherwood Forester (Standing in for 34046 Braunton due to gauging issues at Kings Cross to which she replaced 70000 Britannia) on a Steam Dreams Excursion 'London to York Christmas Market' from London Kings Cross to York via Lincoln.
We start the video at Church Fenton where we capture 46115 Scots Guardsman looking nice in the sunlight but unfortunately coasting through due to being 3 mins early.
After Church Fenton we headed up the line to Sherburn-in-Elmet for Black Five 44871, however due to the very late running of her it would mean that she would clash with capturing 45231 where we would capture her at Ryther. With 44871 passing Sherburn & 45231 passing Ryther around a similar time to each other meaning we had to choose which Black Five to see and with all due respects to 44871, capturing 45231 is a much rarer occasion so we chose to capture her instead.
However much to our surprise here's where things change...
We were looking on OpenTrainTimes for both railtours and it turned out that 44871 was being diverted on the ECML all the way to York rather than pass through Sherburn on the old ECML route.
This meant we would get both 44871 & 45231 passing Ryther within 14 mins of a each other without any other trains heading northbound in between, how astonishing! Two locos of the same class passing on two different trains within 14 mins of each other heading in the same direction and to add to it, two LMS locos in the LNERs backyard... what would Gresley have made of this? Surely this must be a once in a lifetime occasion and one I certainly won't forget!
Anyway we capture both Black Fives speeding north looking great.
We fast forward to the evening where unfortunately both 44871 & 46115 would be dragged out of York by 47802 (with 44871) seen at Drighouses & 47804 (With 46115) seen at Askham. Heading from York to Gascoigne Wood where the would be turned, why this was the case I'm unsure of as 45231 seemed to be turned in York.
After getting both 47s thrashing out of York we capture the delayed 45231 charging away from the city southbound sounding nice as she gets up to speed for the run down to Kings Cross via Lincoln in fading light.
We then decided to have a last min trip to the west side of Leeds where we would capture Scots Guardsman at Kirkstall Forge in the darkness as she gets away from the loop just east of the station with the 47 unfortunately doing the lion share of work to end off a pretty topsy turvy day.
Overall, a good day but could've been better in my opinion but it was truly special seeing two steam tours within 14 mins of each other with the same class of loco on them and we hope to capture all three locos featuring in this video again sometime as they're all fantastic!

Thank you very much David! It was a real honour to see two Black Fives back to back within 14 mins of each other just like in steam days :)

Another great video capturing steam in what looks like some reasonable weather conditions. I never went out yesterday morning for Scots Guardsman leaving Carlisle as the weather forecast was not good and the early start meant that the light was going to be an issue.
