  • Black 5's are one of my favourite sounding locos - Terrific to have 2 running in close proximity to each other on the ECML for the York Christmas Festival on 18/11/23.
See West Coast operated 44871 arriving into Peterborough first, having spent the summer in Scotland operating Jacobite services across West Highland line.
Next up is LSL loco 45231 'The Sherwood Forester' working a similar Steam Dreams service up to York.
Both locos sound absolutely amazing - That Black 5 whistle is so distinctive and both locos provided great departures from Peterborough.
The video ends with a couple of freight moves that passed through the station whilst waiting for the Black 5's.
Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching.

I thought the diesel was for backup and generator for coaches etc, was it pushing from the rear to get started as well ?

Diesel provides the electricity for the train heating and catering. Also there just in case there is a problem with the Black 5.

I don’t think the diesel was pushing, it sounded as if it might be taking its own weight. Hard to say, really! Great video, thankyou.

Not a "pair" of Black Fives so much as two separate trains.

No, it is a pair of black 5s, they are not trains, they are loco's pulling a train

I meant that no single train has two 5s at its head - so not a "pair", just two separate locos on their respective trains.@@russellgreen3375

I love the authentic diesel loco on the back. It really enhances the whole aesthetic.... not!
It looks ridiculous and spoils it for me.

In the event of assistance being required..they must keep a good schedule on the main line.. there's also air conditioning and reliable electrics in case of failure...

With respect, I know the reasons for it, but I simply don't care!
To hell with the schedule! The damned privatised trains are always late or cancelled anyway. And as for electricity and a/c, let the passengers have an authentic experience - without any..
