The symphonic poems are a wonderful nook of the Dvorak catalog. They are distinct from the Liszt poems in that they don't exactly search for ways to deal with sonata form problems. Very picaresque, though, and he does certain things with the orchestra he does not do anywhere else. Awesome post, thanks.
Thank you for posting. The water goblin is not a cute character in Czech fairytales - he is encountered in Rusalka again as a dramatic and scary, but also a melancholy and disillusioned character. But for the children he is painted as a merry figure sitting on the water edge mending - I think - fishing nets.
Mackerras is always good in Czech music, but I urge you to search out the Chalabala version and the Neumann version...all Supraphon OF COURSE. The only non-Czech who comes close is surely Harnoncourt.
