Turkish Air-to-air Kills in Syrian Civil War (Part 2, Shootdown of Russian Su-24)

  • In 2015. the situation in Syria started to change. Russian military intervention strenghtened the position of Assad's government. It also made things more complicated for other involved parties such as Turkey. While they could shoot down Syrian military aircraft that violated Turkish border even briefly without consequences, doing the same thing with Russian aircraft was a different matter. Nevertheless, in November 2015. that is exactly what happened. Turkish F-16s shot down a Russian Su-24. How each side viewed and explained this? Differently, of course.
In 2020. the Turkish involvement in Syria was getting more direct than ever before. Now, their aircraft didn't just shoot down Syrian ones that entered Turkish airspace but those that simply attacked Turkish backed insurgent groups. This resulted in several more air-to-air kills for the Turks. Their victims included another Mi-17 helicopter, two Su-24 bombers and an L-39 light trainer/attack aircraft.
In this DCS World reenactment, you will be able to see the details behind all those incidents.

The Turkish Armed Forces, which started the Spring Shield Operation against Idlib, shot down 3 warplanes belonging to the Syrian regime so far.
On March 1, the Turkish Armed Forces shot down two SU-24 type warplanes in the Cebel Zaviye region.
The third plane was shot down on March 3, 2020. The last plane shot down was L-39.
The place where the planes were shot down is an area close to the area where 36 soldiers were killed by the air strike.
    Peace Eagle gave early notice
The military sources spoke to by Independent Turkish stated that the Airborne Early Warning and Control Aircraft (E7T HEİK), also known as the "Peace Eagle", contributed greatly to the downing of these planes.
Detecting the regime planes approaching the units of the TAF, HEIK reported this to the F-16s, which carried out air patrols with data transfer in a very short time.
F-16s engaged the regime planes that they coded as "enemy" using the radar data transmitted to them by the early warning aircraft and fired from within the Turkish airspace.
    Radar turned off, missile fired
F-16s, which also turned off their radar so that their location would not be detected by Syrian aircraft, fired active radar seeker and beyond-sight range air-to-air missiles (BVRAAM) at Syrian regime warplanes.
Military sources state that the ground jammer Korals also support this activity.
It is stated that electronic warfare elements are used extensively in both Armed UAV raids and F-16 activities in Idlib.
