    Last time I saw a filter do that was 40 years ago when I rebuilt my first 350 Chevy and after cleaning the oil pump with Brake Kleen and letting it sit for a couple months the plunger rusted and when starting the engine the guage buried and the pressure kinked the oil filter covering the garage floor with oil. Dad wasn't impressed with my skills as a mechanic covering his garage floor in oil. Live and learn.

      I actually got bit by one of these swimming in Florida of all things. It was a very glancing bite it came out of the pool filter grabbed me and then swam away. I was very lucky, it hurt like a f***** but it was not as bad as I hear they can be. I have no idea what it was doing there in Florida or why it was in a pool but here we are. Had that happen on a medium speed MAK genset. What made it extra spicy was the fact that when the fuel filter gasket failed it was spraying right on the TC inlet. I held the rack closed while the other guy got soaked in fuel closing the supply valve. Saved the engine but what a mess. Was running over 1100rpm (900 rpm set) on only fuel spraying in the TC.

    Should be a restrictor in the outlet of the fuel manifold in the head that recirculates back to the tank to keep the fuel in the head cool. If it gets plugged, fuel pressure will go up to that of the relief valve. If that is also stuck the fuel pressure can get real high.
    Different engines with different number of cylinders had different size restrictor diameters.

It’s a permanent indentation that’s been there about 20 years now and it’s a shallow indentation that’s a little larger in diameter than a pencil eraser. ✏️ And yeah… it hurt for DAYS. The initial bite wasn’t super horrible but after about 45 seconds the pain started to get worse. It came in waves and was strongest for the first couple hours. Was a full ache over the next few days. Wayne a little trick i learned in bending tubing, if you need a really tight radius bend for tubing especially copper , make the piece a few inches longer then fold one end over then take some table SALT and fill it up then crimp the other end , make your bend the SALT won't allow the the tubing to collapse,then cut the ends that you crimped off ,off , 90% of the time the salt comes out the same way you put it in, but if it doesn't put it in water to dissolve the rest of the salt don't use sugar it will cake up and be a nightmare to get out , you can do it already flared just need to plug the ends off

    What a nifty little engine! When it popped the seal on that fuel filter, the first thing I thought of was the bypass in the pump! I worked on a 3-53 Delco genset that did the same thing. It sat out in the weather for like 7 years without being run, and I did free up the rack and linkage, but I never thought to check pressure on the fuel system. I got it started, and it immediately blew the filter seals and liked to drown me in diesel fuel!😱🤣 I never could get the bypass freed up on that one, and ended up replacing the pump. I don't think the defects on that cam roller will cause you any issues, as long as they spin freely. I guess you could pull the followers and clean them up with some 1000 grit emery cloth, if you were a stickler for perfection.😄

    Yeah, kind of jealous. Imagining this hooked to a 30kW AC generator. My first experience with Detroit Diesel was a 3-53 in a Ford L900 dump with 5-4 trans (gas to diesel job). Ran many many 6-71's and 8V71's with several different drivelines. Been a Detroit Diesel guy since I could drive and just sold my 2003 (non-EGR) DDEC-4 Series 60 12.7L last year for $30k which I ran for 12-years. Totally indestructible engines when properly cared for and maintained. Besides the Series 60 which I got into from the late 1980's starting with the 11.1L, my most favorite Detroit is the twin-turbo Silver 8V92. Paired with a GM Allison trans, they had an unmistakable whine that was music to my ears. The fire trucks had them with the large exhaust system and they roared. Oh the memories of years past.

    OK I found the follow up Video on the 1-71, Yes you find the bad stuff and make it work what more can you ask for. Great result, I am shocked 1939 Diesel Engine is running so well in 2023, Its crazy. Great job of knowing where to go and what to do. I was worried when you said "Well boys, things have escalated a bit here. " I talk to my tools in the shop like that, all the time. I tell them great day, great output troopers, Thank You, rest up now. When you work alone they are your friends. Now what, Yes change that oil get the the good stuff. Fuel pressure was nuts I saw the needle going around and it did not stop. Whoa! Without Ignition all you need is compression and fuel she will fire up. I wonder, vehicles with the 71 Series must had a lot of gears to get anywhere with such a narrow range or RPM, Yes?

    • @Ol2Stroker
      @Ol2Stroker  7 месяцев назад

      Most 71 series would run 2100-2400 rpm. These singles are a totally different thing rpm wise.

    The cam needs to be reground. Maybe .010" off the nose and ramps, and possibly .030" off the base circle. Get .020" more lift.

    "A green kid, setting on a hillside of the upper cascade mountains, freezing cold and trying to get some fuel to the injectors..... nothing working for me". Who knows if just putting something in that pump would of helped... I did have air on my fuel tank but nothing was going to make a small amount of fuel go from the tank to the engine and get me off of the hill short of walking that twenty miles. Long story short, I did manage to put what fuel I had into a can and mount it to the mirror so that gravity was my friend. Hey, I was fourteen and dumber than two rocks in my pockets. Dad hadn't shown me that much but I did learn to cuss every detroit I had to drive back in the late fifties. I did graduate from hospice again... sooner or later, one of those dreadful bugs will find my box and have a meal

    I have read about 1-71 engines and seen pictures of them but never have seen one in detail or running. Shouldn’t the followers be common to another71 series engines. Totally sucks the cam is hammered. That little engine would look real sweet powering the hydraulic pump on your trailer. I don’t know what noise making to fuel is but a 1/4 keg welded up appropriately and polished would look sweet as a fuel tank
