In the great 'American in Paris' Gene was 38, supposedly an 'old man' for a dancer. Here he's 52. Awe-inspiring! There's a reason why some people become legends.
For me this is what La La Land was missing;;; Talent with a capital T. This is the kind of singing and dancing I grew up with. Multitalented performers who can act, be comedic, sing, and really dance in one broad shot take, no cuts, or tricks.
Lalala Land was boring…stupid & a waste of money to make…..& terrible Casting….the Actors were hopeless…. Shirley should have been an Advisor on the Film
I never knew Shirley could dance like that! Wow! No wonder she was dancing with Gene Kelly! She was fantastic, just as he was! So glad I got to see this!
In her primetime, MacLaine was what they would call a triple threat. She could sing, dance and act at a very high level. She also wrote about 12 or 13 books, all of them best sellers. She was into paranormal, Eastern traditions, UFO phenomenon, spirituality (not religion) and always had top, credible sources. The 1986 edition of her very controversial 1983 book Out On The Limb is still in print today and you can get it on Amazon.
@IyaEarthseeds You are so correct. She was a hoofer on Broadway long before she was ever on film. I love to watch her in "Sweet Charity", too, which is one of my favorite musicals. And once again I will have to say you are correct in saying "Where have you people been?" Some just don't get it or do a little research before commenting. Shirley's legs are georgous in this performance as you can see her legs are very slender as from her training in ballet. Also, her kick in the air is identical to someone who was professionally trained in ballet.
Yep...some big legs, everyone tends to forget that this is how she began, (singing and dancing) because of her great success as not only a dramatic actress but also as a comic actress. She's well rounded, literally; as well as figuratively.
Wow! I love how they both have their own interpretation of the dance (she's graceful, and he's energetic) but at the same time are so in sync. Wonderful, both are so talented!
Of course, as Ginger Rogers once said, she did everything Gene did but backwards and in high heals. As a man, having to wear high heals makes me respect the women a lot more.

@@rebeccasabet2802--I don't think it's known for sure how that starts, some may have been born that way. In other cases it may be upbringing. Being worshipped like Jesus really makes it worse, that's for sure, because that can make them super-arrogant on top of everything else. Narcissisim is common in movie and TV stars, especially the older ones and their families suffer because of it. Spouses are often cheated on and abandoned and children abused and disinherited. Jerry Lewis' kids used to hide when he came home from work. Shirley MacLaine's child spent her entire childhood with her abusive father and in boarding schools. But after paying for all those boarding schools she wouldn't pay for college or even trade school and put her out on the street (paid for a dump for a couple of months I guess) as soon as she graduated from high school. She paid no medical expenses and didn't want to pay for her daughter's wedding. She and her children will get nothing when Shirley dies. The daughter did nothing to deserve this; how could she? She never lived with her mother. Shirley had very little interest in her grandchildren and maybe saw them a couple of times. Her books are all me-me-me and admit sleeping with married men. When you grow up where these people live and work and do business you meet people who have been around them and their families. And I've met some of them myself. Nobody who lives where they live and hang out gives a rat's ass about getting an autograph or talking to them and the LAPD hates them.

Great musical number. Gene is /was still a fantastic dancer even over 50. Never was there a more beautiful masculine dancer. What a hot man he is. Love you always Gene and miss you. 💞
Seen this movie twice. Shirley McClean plays a rich young widow who walks into a psychiatrist's office and announces she wants to give all her money away. She's jinxed, she explains. Seems she started out as a poor, simple country girl who wanted only to marry for love. Now she's been married four times, first to Dick Van Dyke, then to Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, and finally Gene Kelly. Each time she marries the husband starts out poor but nice, they're blissfully happy together, she accidentally gives him an idea that makes him a millionaire, he turns into a rich selfish jerk and then dies in a spectacullarily hilarious way. Each marriage is recounted in a flashback sequence that plays out like a spoof of a film genre: A silent movie (Dick Van Dyke), a French cinema verité (Paul Newman), a 1930s Hollywood drama (Robert Mitchum), and an MGM musical ( Gene Kelly). So now she's fabulously rich, but all she wants is to be poor and marry a nice, poor guy who will love her, stay poor, and stay nice. I won't spoil the ending. If you haven't seen this one, find a way to see it. The comedy is spot-on, the costumes (designed by Edith Head) are scrumptious, the sets are fantastic, and Shirley McClean is at her gamine best. What a Way To Go!

For someone who wasn’t a top flight dancer, she got some of the best opportunities. She danced with Gene Kelly, Chita Rivera, she did choreography by Michael Kidd, Bobb Fosse. In this clip you see one if the things that made her great. Like Judy Garland she didn’t have great precision, she didn’t do the Steps full out like Chita , but she had a kind of physical cleverness. When she and Gene are in straw hats , she is mimicking him, mirroring his position, his attitude. It’s just what Judy would have done, emphasized it and made it funny. Sh also has great command of those Jack Cole inspired jazz adagio moves.
Better than I expected of Shirley MacClain. Of course she couldn’t really keep up with gene Kelly with his extensions and flair. But still a fine number

This is actually a fun movie. Made in 1964, it seems much earlier as it has a LOT of dream sequences; very 1940's MGM. Mostly forgotten now after being blown away at the box office by another little musical....The Sound of Music.
Teri Garr is in the chorus somewhere. I saw this first-run at the Malco (Orpheum) at Main and Beale in Memphis, Tennessee, 1964. It was one of several films originally intended for Marilyn Monroe and reworked after her death. Two others were "Something's Got To Give" with the famous swimming pool scene, remade as "Move Over, Darling" (1963) with Doris Day; and "Kiss Me, Stupid" (1964) remade with Kim Novak. But it's hard to imagine Marilyn dancing like Shirley does here. This movie also gives rise a good trivia question: name a film starring Dick van Dyke and Paul Newman...and Robert Mitchum...and Dean Martin...and Bob Cummings...and Gene Kelly. It's hard, because except for van Dyke and Martin, they didn't have any scenes together.

I assume those high notes sung at the beginning of the piece were dubbed?
The operatic singing was dubbed for both of them…obviously they weren’t trying to fool anyone, it was for comic effect.
