A pity you skipped the credits. Besides being an excellent instrumental piece, there's actually quite a pointed message in it. One of the last lines in the song is "And no one remembers our names" and then in the credits every soldier is named, is a real soldier from history, many with their own stories from other Sabaton songs. From Leonidas to Sgt. York and all the rest

I was born in Yorkshire in England
and every village, town and city has a war memorial
to the dead of world war one and two
My school the equivalent of a US High School
even had a memorial to the boys who died in WW1 and WW2.
This is a Motörhead cover and Lemmy wrote this
after seeing a programme on television
about the Battle of the Somme.
That too is an emotional song sung with very little accompaniment.
I like reading Golden Age crime fiction
which really gets going in the 1920s and 1930s
and characters have been affected by WW1.
Benjamin Britten in 1962 wrote his War Requiem
for the opening of the new Coventry Cathedral.
The medieval building having been destroyed by the Luftwaffe in WW2.
The Requiem uses the Latin requiem text and
poetry from Wilfred Owen who died in France
on the front line seven days before the end of the war.
    Powerful stuff.

You wonder "if anyone knows....." YES .... most people in this country. I'm sorry you couldn't be bothered to watch to the end - the music was still playing so to dismiss it is an insult to the original composer, Lemmy Kilmister and to Sabaton who spent a huge amount on this production.

The line switch at the end to "and now there's nobody remembers our names" line hits a whole hell of a lot harder once you realize, for all too many of the fallen, that it's true because there was literally no one left to remember them or even to carry on the family name. The last generation for far too many families died scared and alone in the bloody fields of France.
The Somme was such a singularly catastrophic scenario due to the "Pals Battalions" that meant several towns lost nearly every single man of fighting age in one fell swoop. It was a travesty that didn't just end bloodlines, it ended entire communities.

Yes, both my great-grandfathers were at the somme; one died and the other was wounded, losing his left eye. Both were from Northern towns, but my great-grandfather who lost his eye was from Lancashire. This is another reason now when enlisting relatives are split up because they don't want a repeat of the first world war, when brothers, fathers, and sons were in the same regiment so they weren't all killed.

I remember reading about this battle once. There was a platoon who were cut down in less than a minute. It happened so fast that their Lieutenant hadn't even realized. He called to his men "come on now! on your feet you cowards! would you make me go alone?" to which his Sergeant replied "they's plenty brave sir! just all fucking dead!" the only people still alive out of that whole damn platoon were the Sergeant (who was shot) the Lieutenant and two fellows at the wings who were also shot.

Motörheads original was pretty intense but Sabaton just raised the song to pure epicness. As a veteran myself who's been in combat more than once, hearing this song makes me tear up every time. Lost some friends, comrades, brothers back in those days and while listening to this song i see them standing before me smiling. 🥲🫡

  • @RaoulKunz1

Thank you for the reaction, it's a magnificent cover.
I always feel I should add this information to this video because it hits a harder then and it's a subtle thing:
The "procession" comes across a beautiful ecru coloured early 20th century coupe standing in the street, apparently abandoned by it's passengers.
This is the coupe *Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria* and his wife *Sophie Chotek Duchess of Hohenberg* bled to death in on June 28 1914 on a street corner in Sarajevo, setting of *The July Crisis* and all that followed.
In a very real sense it's the pale horse that conquest rode in with war and pestilence and death in it's wake. It's the herald of *The Apocalypse of the Old World* and the first act of *The Seminal Tragedy.*
And I feel it's also a magnificent display of the level of historical competence that Sabaton has reached by now that it's in there, uncommented and unexplained, just building on the possibility that people will recognise the impact of this obscure detail.
    Best regards
    Raoul G. Kunz

Check out the original Motörhead song and you will understand why it sounds so different. Compared to the original version this is a headbanger. The original is a funeral march basicly, with Lemmy's mourning voice singing about his fellow englishmen. It hits even harder as the great version that Sabaton did. By the way, in Europe, mostly everyone knows about this battle and other battles of WW1 wich was a man slaughtering machine like no other. Napoleonic tactics against machine guns and modern artillerie. The only tactics they knew was throwing bodies at the target, attack the line in the hope to break through. These guys were simply mowed down by machine guns in "no mans land" between the trenches.
