Very emotional song. I am from Lancashire, and we have lots of artwork memorials dedicated to Lancashire regiments. Also, my great-grandfather was with the Manchester regiment, which was one of the first regiments to make the push that day. They were simply cut to pieces by German artillery fire. I have seven years of service with the Royal Tank Regiment. Our regiment originally created the first main battle tank, Big Willie, which made an appearance in quite a few of the large campaigns during WW1.

Sabaton are a fantastic band. They write songs based around notable historical figures, battles and events from all throughout history. The main thing is they do not glorify war or any side as they write songs about Germans too for example, but they highlight the bravery of the people who fought and their sacrifice while at the same time showing the futility and pointlessness of bloodshed. They are one of the best Metal bands in the world and deservedly so.

I agree they don’t glorify war as a good thing but they point out the challenges people faced and things they overcame etc like in the song price of a mile it says about how many people fought etc
True, but you generally do know what you're signing up for and make an informed decision, you're trained appropriately as well. These kids had no idea what they signed up for, were barely trained at all and the draftsmen didn't really care if they faked their ages either because all they needed was cannon fodder. Which is what they were and how they died. An utterly pointless, tragic massacre. They deserve to be remembered as all soldiers do, but I feel like they deserve it especially because they should never have been there.

Since it looks like no one have mentioned it, this is a cover on a Motörhead song. The two guys standing in the door opening at 7:51 are Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell, the drummer and the guitarist of Motörhead. The picture is of Lemmy Kilmister the bassist and singer of Motörhead and they guy holding the picture is Eddie Rocha who was the tour manager of Motörhead and the current one for Sabaton.
It is one of Motorhead greatest songs and that is saying something since they were the greatest band of all time. They were Motorhead and they played Rock n Roll.
Pretty much all the soldiers in the video are “characters “ from Sabaton songs. Sabaton doesn’t glorify war, they just tell the stories that are there. From Rourkes drift to Audie Murphy to the first Dreadnaughts. Dive into their catalog. You won’t be disappointed
Yeah, Sabaton glorifies heroes of any side, but never war. They have many songs, like this one or The Price of a Mile, that is very clearly very anti-war.
Just wanted to join the people and welcoming you to the amazing band that is Sabaton. You are in for a treat if you keep on this path, so many good songs. A couple of must see is 'En livstid i krig' live from the Great Tour in Gothenburg, its in Swedish but use the subs, 'No bullets fly' the animated story video, and finally why not 'Ghostdivision' live from the polish Woodstock back in 2012. Amazing performance. I could also recommend their official Sabaton History Channel if you want to learn more about the event in the song. Really good reaction!
If you’re getting into Sabaton and want to cheer up, this cover really brings the tears, I’d recommend their animated story videos, either Lady of the Dark (about Milunka Savage, the most decorated female soldier in history) or First Soldier (about Albert Servin Roche). The animated story video “No Bullets Fly” will restore your faith in humanity
Sabaton have been called "a bunch of history teachers that decided to form a metal band so they could reach a wider audience". This is probably one of the slowest pieces they've released. Compare it with "En Livstid I Krig", "The Lion From the North", or "The Night Witches". They don't take sides; they just lay out the facts in musical form. As the closing slate for their music video "Bismarck" says, "War knows no nation." You may also be interested in the Sabaton History Channel, which explains in greater detail the topics for their music, and why they choose to release some videos as animated stories, e.g. "No Bullets Fly".
Sabaton is a war history band from Sweden. They are not all emotional gut punches like this one but they do have some original one that are on the same level like "Price of a Mile" and "To Hell and Back". The ones I prefer though are the tales of insane Valor that was not covered in history class like "40:1", "Resist and Bite", and "Night Witches"
Great reaction! Don’t worry about the complaints of pausing too much; it’s your channel and you do whatever the heck you want. If you want to hear more Sabaton, try: Night Witches, No Bullets Fly, The Unkillable Soldier, Primo Victoria, The First Soldier, and Christmas Truce, just to name a few. 😉😉😉
what a great tribute, to a great song from the great late Lemmy Kilminster and motorhead....... the last members of motorhead are in the video... do yourself a favor and watch the original, too gsss... omions, onions everywhere.... edit: and this very song-reaction, was what brought me to your chanel.... and your emotional reaction was what( i think) will make me stay.... there is no shame in tears, that come from an impact like the one from this video....
Hi Gitana, I'd never heard of Sabaton until today but that was a great song and a great Video. War just plain stinks . Thank you for the great reaction.
I seldom watch videos of songs and singers I don't know or in this case never heard of. However I had missed you and when I saw the notification I figured why not give it a shot. This was incredible. I will now have to search this our. That was simply one of the most moving songs I have heard in a very long time. So honest, so true, so heartfelt and so so respectful. I feel privileged to have witnessed it. Welcome back and thank you and thanks to those that made this suggestion.
The Band really makes you feel things. They are mainly what I listen to when I’m working. But when this song comes on I start to get a lil bit misty eyed.
Sabaton is also a great live band. Like En livstid i krig (in swedish, but there are subtitles!!), Swedish pagans or Ghost division Watch theme and you will have a fun time. They are areally great live band
Hello sorry for this post. I was an commando for air force for France. One day i Lost my best Friend and my brother for my Heart. I love this music. Thanks you.
About the comment "For 6 miles of ground!!" Listen to "price of a mile" and you will see how expensive 6 miles can be... There are also MANY other amazing and emotional songs from sabaton: christmas truce, en livstid i krig (live ONLY), no bullets fly and dozens of others. Some of their best songs are: Bismarck, great war, stormtroopers, dreadnought, father.
Hello there Half Pint & everyone! The lyrics & visual representation in video are sad but good! Very emotional & powerful just listening & watching it! Much love Sis & take care everyone else!!!💙💙💙
the battle of the somme was important because if the allies took it it would force the germans to retreat thus easing the tension off of france. if the germans held it, it put/kept france in a lot of danger of being attacked and taken over. basically, it was an incredibly important strategic position
Loved the reaction and can't wait to see you react to more Sabaton songs. FYI Sabaton is from the same town as me here in Sweden 🇸🇪 You have now a new subscriber thanks to this reaction. Take care both you and your husband ❤
I am a British Army Veteran with over 20 years plus service. After my career became an Educational Officer at a Military Museum. We get school kids and tourist visit. The young men were volunteers, who were enlist from the communities, who either worked in hard industry, mills and the likes. Given the then Kings shilling when the enlisted. 3 meals a day a bed and uniform. Given very basic training. To them it was a better life than some of them had.
1st Happy to see you well and fit. I missed you. Second during my 8 month battle with Cancer seeing and hearing you and your voice helped me more then you will ever know. Third at 17 Enlisted with my Fathers signature. By the time I was 19 and came home we sat all night outside did not say a word. But was said . Retied at 43 people say I lost it because my dog is my best friend and the one I trust. Sabaton price of a mile is hard....
The war to end all wars. . .yet the world was back at it only 23 years later taking another 50 million lives and at the conclusion of that war, the thirst resurfaced only 5 years later in Korea and then in Vietnam and then Afghanistan and then Kuwait and then Iraq and now Ukraine . . . and STILL we have learnt nothing. . .at the expense of the innocent.
Welcome to the world of metal history the Sabaton way. They have so many fantastic songs. Next on the list No bullets fly the animated story video and then Christmas truce official music video. Always make sure you have tissues. Loved the reaction. New subscriber. Love and, peace from South Africa
Every WW1 or WW2 song is emotional for me because my great-grandfather fought in both wars and died in the 2nd world war. Myself i´am retired soldier, served for 5 years for my country and i really like Sabaton and their production .Basically they are teaching history by singing and history should never be forgotten, changed or repeated again, humanity needs to learn from history to not do same mistakes again, but still there is tension in the world because of egos of certain leaders. We fight over the smallest things and ignore the major problems like famine or deadly diseases. Remember, anyone who reads this comment, we might be different in skin colour but our anatomy is the same, when we die our bodies disentegrate the same way, when they find us in the future our bones are the same. Try to make the world a better and happier place to live or else our children and their children will live in even harder times as we do now...
WWi and WWii i have respect for thouse who fought or serve. Love you my dear grandfather (surgical nurse for the US army WWII). WWII was the bloodiest war in history with the most deaths.
I remember watching the music video few days ago, and my hearth just sank trough the song and the learning of the very story bout it. Sabaton did a well cover of the song, that war is truly a terrible thing that inflict so much pain and i could not stop thinking about all those mothers that lost their children and husbands by those wars. Sabaton surely been one of my favorite Bands, cause not only do they do great music and covers but also make you learn about history, especially bout war.
Great to have you on-board hope you react to more Sabaton music. They tell us History in the form of music. Other great songs with good stories like this are No bullets fly animated and Christmas Truce just two of many favorite's I love of theirs. Ps. Christmas Truce end credits has Floor Jansen from Nightwish sings the dramatic end and is married to Hannes the drummer of Sabaton her band is also worth a looksee. Thank you for your time and to add Reactors react in many ways and because there is so much to take in as you react and so much to remember it makes sense to pause during the reaction and comment so never feel bad for doing this your doing a great job.
Welcome to the fantastic world of Sabaton, if you are the slightest little bit interested in military history, they are the best band in the world, every single one of their songs are about a historic battle, soldier, military units or some other related subject. The ammount of history I have learned through listening to Sabaton is insane!
I love Sabaton's music. Being a history nut and a retired soldier, I've lost friends all over the world. This makes this song relatable even today. I don't blame you for some tears. It makes me tear up as well. Interesting to note that the intelligence and physical requirements for British soldiers was higher for the infantry than most other jobs. They were not cannon fodder but the cream of male society where they came from. Listen to Soldier of The Sky.
The part that gets me is as the solders apear you can say what they are. "Those are ww1 british solders, and a Gerkah, theres American ww2 solders and ancient greeces in the back! Theres a knight and look a napoleonic era drummer!" And you can tell where they are from and what time period by there uniforms but you don't know who the men are who are wearing them and as the walk forward into the mist there names are forgoten and all we remember is there uniforms. They laid down there lives for what they believed to be the greatest cause and we dont even have a small idea who these individual men were and what there names where. Almost all solders who die sacrificed everything and are quickly forgoten.
Welcome to the Sabaton rabbit hole.... there were so many songs to choose from... 40:1, the price of the mile, the Christmas truce, heart of iron, the first soldier, the entire album of carolus rex.... just to get started... they're all amazing.
Christmas Truce, Soldier of Heaven, and The Last Stand are three more excellent Sabaton songs ( Dan Vasc and Jonathan Young also both do excellent covers of The Last Stand.). Also, check out Tommy Johansson's solo work and his work with Majestica; he's the one who did the guitar solo. This past December, he did his own "24 Days of Christmas" by releasing a video daily, and he releases a solo video almost every Friday.
In 1981, as an 18 year old I toured England. We stopped in small town in Oxfordshire, that had a population of about 1000 people. It probably had had about 1000 people in it for the last 300 years. I stood in front of a memorial that listed the local dead in the Great War. There were almost 200 names on it.
First time watching these videos and i have always loved history. My great granduncle served in the 32nd division 125th infantry company k he was a 1st lt he was shot in the back by a sniper in 1918 but survived. My whole family did service including my late father he was the last who served his country. Thank you for these reaction videos
Long time Sabaton fan, here. The moment Sabaton could make me cry, I know they were worth following. For me it was The Hammer Has Fallen, but 1916 still is a necessarily low blow. Embrace the emotions that Sabaton give you, because, if we ever are to do something, is NEVER forget.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Sabaton! Even though this particular song is a cover, these guys are amazing storytellers in just about everything they do. As I'm sure many others have told you, they tell stories of war history, but never take sides or glorify war itself. And they honour the people "on the ground", while so much history tends to focus on the leaders and the politics. If you want something very emotional but also uplifting I'd recommend the animated video for No Bullets Fly. Other songs I love are Christmas Truce (tissue warnings but also a beautiful story), The Unkillable Soldier (upbeat and fun in an almost Pythonesque way), Soldier of Heaven, The Last Stand and The Red Baron (just great songs with great storytelling imo), Bismark (epic music video), Lady of the Dark and The Night Witches (cool female-centric stories), and Livgardet/The Royal Guard (basically an anthem to the Swedish royal guard regiment). Oh, and the live performance of En Livstid i Krig ("A Lifetime of War", sung in Swedish but with English subtitles) from Gothenburg is absolutely epic, but also comes with a tissue warning. I wish you lots of fun diving into their catalogue. =) Also, there aren't many frames in this video where you only see the band memebers and all of them are in the same shot, but at 3:48 and 5:51 in your video they are lined up like this, from left to right: Chris Rörland (guitarist) Hannes Van Dahl (drummer) Joakim Brodén (lead singer and keyboardist, although the latter is almost never shown) Tommy Johansson (guitarist) Pär Sundström (bassist)
Sabaton has done themed albums since their 4th album. They're up to their 10th now. The 4th album, called "The Art of War" all had songs that encapsulated some tenet of Sun Tzu's art for war. The next album "Coat of Arms" had a mix of songs about WWI, and WWII. The next album, "Carolus Rex" was about Swedish 17th Century history. The next two, "Heroes" and "The Last Stand" were both about WWII specifically. And then their most recent two, "The Great War" and "The War to End All Wars" were about WWI. I hope they do an album about the Russo-Ukraine War one of these days.
Now you have to react to Christmas Truce by Sabaton. It´s about the truce between the germans and the brittish troops on Christmas 1914. A true story. The OFFICIAL music video. Not the animated version. Bring tissues. Hehehehehe Oh and the drummer is married to Floor Jansen (Nightwish)
Showed Christmas Truce video to my mom (80) and she was crying half-way through it. Yeah, these videoes do have a habit of that effect on people. Great band!
On paper the idea of being able to fight with your friends, or just someone you know in general, instead of going to war all on your own, seems pretty good. They were able to go through at home. basically. They slept in their own beds, got up in the morning, went to their local army base and trained there with their friends. But then of course things like this happen. The British shelled the German positions for weeks, hoping the intense shelling would destroy most fortifications, like bunkers, trenches and especially barbed wire on the frontline (it didn't). The men were ordered to slowly advance towards the "obliterated German positions", because they thought all they had to do was take out some last remaining soldiers. What ended up happening is, the British soldiers got out of their trenches, walked less than 10 meters and were ripped to shreds by German machine guns. It was planned that the first British wave would hit the German frontline after 10-20 minutes, it took them hours, just to get to the first trench line.
there was an arguement between the commander for infantry and artillery, which resulted in artillery not firing, and that is what cost all those lives that day
My Great Grandfather was in The Canadian Army in WWI. He was with The Nova Scotia Rifles. He was at Paschendale & Vimy Ridge. I think he may have been wounded in Flanders.
The incredulity and anger when you said 6 miles is possibly the best raw response possible. The British army phases of their army during the war. The first was the British expeditionary force made up of veteran professional soldiers, who pound for pound were far more skilled at their craft than any others in the world at that time. However they were a much smaller force than those of continental Europe. As the losses mounted to staggeringly high levels, a volunteer force was needed to rapidly. Expand the army and to replace the losses of those seasoned troops. These were the pals. The northern lads. Volunteer units that were raised entirely within towns and villages on the promised that they would be able to serve together.. The idea being vetted, you might fight harder if you knew the people you were fighting with. This was where the youth of britain went to die. Following that catastrophe specifically at the Somme and Ypres, Conscription entered as the third phase. There could not have been a fourth.
Thanks for this live reaction! I loved the whole thing. Music, singing and filming. And your comments. *Please, take care of yourself.* (I´ll be back.)
I enlisted in the Army at 17 as and airborne infantryman and did not expect to live to 30. What they’ve expressed in this song is really the mentality we had…..and felt that our sacrifice was worth it…..our deaths would be to the credit of our service….I really cannot explain it…..but this song really brings it to the forefront.

Thanks, great reaction. Welcome to the battalion \m/ :)
I loved your reaction, my Grandfather was badly wounded in 1916 at The Somme. The Scots lads got thrown in with the Northern lads too.
I agree. En Livstid I Krig (Live - The Great Tour - Gothenburg) in particular would be a great choice for a followup. Be sure subtitles are on.
As the closing slate for their music video "Bismarck" says, "War knows no nation."
You may also be interested in the Sabaton History Channel, which explains in greater detail the topics for their music, and why they choose to release some videos as animated stories, e.g. "No Bullets Fly".
One of the best facts about sabaton for people who react to their songs is that it doesnt matter that much what song you do, everybody will love it❤
True
Another amazing thing about Sidney Lewis is that in World War 2 he served in the bomb disposal unit. Man led an incredible life.
The kid lived? And fought (more or less) in the following war??? 😮
@@jeffk1482 Yes he did and he was also a policeman. He died in 1969 at the age of 66.
I'd add The Last Stand to that list as well
Yess
The others like Defense of Moscow, 82nd all the way, the red Baron, No Bullets Fly, Long live the king❤️🔥❤️🔥
Ï still cry every time i listen to this
More Sabaton!
Great reaction! Don’t worry about the complaints of pausing too much; it’s your channel and you do whatever the heck you want. If you want to hear more Sabaton, try:
Night Witches, No Bullets Fly, The Unkillable Soldier, Primo Victoria, The First Soldier, and Christmas Truce, just to name a few. 😉😉😉
Time for some more Sabaton!
what a great tribute, to a great song from the great late Lemmy Kilminster and motorhead.......
the last members of motorhead are in the video...
do yourself a favor and watch the original, too
gsss... omions, onions everywhere....
edit:
and this very song-reaction, was what brought me to your chanel....
and your emotional reaction was what( i think) will make me stay....
there is no shame in tears, that come from an impact like the one from this video....
Hi Gitana, I'd never heard of Sabaton until today but that was a great song and a great Video. War just plain stinks . Thank you for the great reaction.
Sabaton’s catalogue is broad and deep
I was there in Gothenburg when they played en livstid i krig and i can only agree with you.
You need to do more Sabaton!
Hello sorry for this post. I was an commando for air force for France. One day i Lost my best Friend and my brother for my Heart. I love this music. Thanks you.
Well done mate.
About the comment "For 6 miles of ground!!"
Listen to "price of a mile" and you will see how expensive 6 miles can be...
There are also MANY other amazing and emotional songs from sabaton: christmas truce, en livstid i krig (live ONLY), no bullets fly and dozens of others.
Some of their best songs are: Bismarck, great war, stormtroopers, dreadnought, father.
You and your reactions and your emotions are so beautiful. 😊❤
Welcome to the Sabaton family, you will enjoy it alot. Great reaction
Greetings from Sweden,Land of Sabaton. You just did the much touching an amazing ever reacton to 1916❤
Thank you ❤ Love and light ❤️🇸🇪
When you said you live 1 hour and 30 minutes away, then I start grinning.
All respect to all unknown soldiers out there! ❤
you can tell everything you need to know about a person if they feel empathy for someone without even knowing their name
Yes they were all victims of war they were all heros and they should all be remembered as heroes, especially those we have know names for.
Thanks sabaton. We should never forget history.
1916 is one of those songs that hit you in the feels a lot harder than people tend to expect, both the original, and Sabaton's cover.
Sabaton Christmas truce is another brilliant video of there's and another sad one
Been a sabaton fan for a couple years now and this is the song that makes me cry the most
Can listen to this once, can listen to this a hundred times. Still hits right in the gut. Timeless.
Great reaction, Gitana.. Not what I expected, but I enjoyed it.. Love y'all
The part that gets me is as the solders apear you can say what they are.
Lass, RESPECT TO UR MAN GIVING ENCOURAGEMENT! Now not only Sabaton but they have SABATON HISTORY! The back stories of their songs w Indy Niedell!
Welcome to the Sabaton rabbit hole.... there were so many songs to choose from... 40:1, the price of the mile, the Christmas truce, heart of iron, the first soldier, the entire album of carolus rex.... just to get started... they're all amazing.
Sabation uprising ❤️
Christmas Truce, Soldier of Heaven, and The Last Stand are three more excellent Sabaton songs ( Dan Vasc and Jonathan Young also both do excellent covers of The Last Stand.). Also, check out Tommy Johansson's solo work and his work with Majestica; he's the one who did the guitar solo. This past December, he did his own "24 Days of Christmas" by releasing a video daily, and he releases a solo video almost every Friday.
I’m glad you’re back missed you girl ❤
In 1981, as an 18 year old I toured England. We stopped in small town in Oxfordshire, that had a population of about 1000 people. It probably had had about 1000 people in it for the last 300 years. I stood in front of a memorial that listed the local dead in the Great War. There were almost 200 names on it.
I love what a class act they are. An amazing 5 minute video, followed by another 5 minutes crediting *everyone* who worked on the video.
Good to see you reacting again your honest reaction is amazing and have been missed looking forward to more reactions from your channel
Also, there aren't many frames in this video where you only see the band memebers and all of them are in the same shot, but at 3:48 and 5:51 in your video they are lined up like this, from left to right:
Chris Rörland (guitarist)
Hannes Van Dahl (drummer)
Joakim Brodén (lead singer and keyboardist, although the latter is almost never shown)
Tommy Johansson (guitarist)
Pär Sundström (bassist)
Nice genuine, honest approach. Love your setting on the divan, with your water bottle too. You need a sleeping Cheshire cat too as a prop 😁
Don't be ashamed of crying Baby Girl. I'm a grown man 53 years old and I bawled like a baby watching this video and hearing the lyrics.
sad and beautifully put, because ALL have had to fight, and too many gave ALL including thier lives, great job G
Hello big sabaton fan and service man hear. Thanks for sharing your reaction
Now you have to react to Christmas Truce by Sabaton. It´s about the truce between the germans and the brittish troops on Christmas 1914. A true story. The OFFICIAL music video. Not the animated version. Bring tissues. Hehehehehe
Oh and the drummer is married to Floor Jansen (Nightwish)
Ghost in the Trenches, Hellfighters, Bismark, Dreadnought, and 7734 are some of my favorites by Sabaton.
When the soldiers faded into the midst, that hits deep..
Very emotional. They should use Sabathon videos in school to educate kids of history. 🇸🇪
there was an arguement between the commander for infantry and artillery, which resulted in artillery not firing, and that is what cost all those lives that day
My Great Grandfather was in The Canadian Army in WWI. He was with The Nova Scotia Rifles. He was at Paschendale & Vimy Ridge. I think he may have been wounded in Flanders.
Nice to see you reacting to videos again. Always enjoy how you break everything down.
Hi!! Thanks for introducing me to another great band. I love the song and your reaction. Talking interrupting and all. Getting closer to 150 grand.
Thanks for this live reaction! I loved the whole thing. Music, singing and filming. And your comments.
*Please, take care of yourself.*
(I´ll be back.)
