Yeah correct. The Bismarck was being shadowed by british cruisers after the battle of Denmark strait. Bismarck was hit by a few shells from hood and was going back to France for repairs. The British fleet only had the carrier Ark Royal in position to slow them down. After the torpedo attact Bismarck s rudder was demolished and sent the Bismarck in circles cause it couldn't steer. Allowing British battleships and cruisers to catch up and finally torpedo and send shells into her leading to her sinking

This was a fantastic winner for the Metal Theme. You're right. The compass is significant, but I haven't found reliable sources as to why. Fairly reasonable to assume the compass taken from the Bismark captain is the one the tugboat skipper has. Some folks point out the numbers scratched onto it match fairly well the coordinates where the ship sank. Others believe the skipper is a descendant of the rescued German sailor: son or grandson.
I figure the tugboat captain was the son of the Bismarck sailor who was rescued. I didn't think it was a compass, but a pocketwatch (which would have been more common at the time). Look at compasses back then and they typically didn't look like that, but pocketwatches did.
6:31 and a cat, curiously. unsinkable Sam, rescued by the british, and survived three ship sinkings in total until the brits decided that he might be bad luck.

A slight correction, the Royal Navy claimed to have sunk the Bismarck, but the survivors of the Bismarck had refuted that claim from the start saying they scuttled the ship to prevent it from being boarded. Robert Ballard, the man who discovered the wreck of Bismarck (and the Titanic among others), preformed a survey of the ship, noting that the hull was in very good shape, with no holes beneath where the waterline of the ship would be. The hull also never imploded, which would happen if the water tight doors were sealed like they should be normally. This further supported the claim from the German sailors that they scuttled the ship, as opening all of the water tight doors is standard when scuttling that way the ship floods and when the charges are set off. He and his team concluded that the actual cause of the ship sinking was from internal sabatoge within the engine room by the crew, and not the Royal Navy.
Wargaming's World of Tanks division also did the CG for Primo Victoria and Steel Commander, plus added a Sabaton themed Tank to their World of Tanks Games.
Sabaton does a wonderful job. Thanks for reviewing it. And lets take a moment to think about the brave sailors and soldiers on both the Bismark and the Hood that lost their lifes doing theit duty in a mad and senseless war.

This band has done so much to bring bring a new appeal base to history, to which I cannot thank them enough. Another amazing track and event depicted in such, "Hearts of Iron," about the men from Germany's 12th Armee (Wehrmacht) who effectively surrendered Berlin in order to save countless civilians and incapacitated soldiers from certain Soviet slaughter. Personal sidenote: My great-grandfather was an officer under General Wenck's command during those final days.
The captain of the fishing vessel was the son or grandson of the survivor you see at the end of the video. It's the same compass with the coordinates inscribed.
Subject for solemnity. I guess they had a gathering before boarding. What if they where told by destiny that all but 3 would never return from the ship.
@@LLiivveeeevviiLL Sailors have long had a superstitious streak a mile wide. I bet they'd have "found" some broken equipment that would keep them from getting underway.
I'll not forget my introduction to Sabaton - i did not even know the name of the band for quite some time - i stumbled upon a youtube-video yeeeaaars ago. It was about Sabaton's song Primo Victoria -and it was mixed with video-sequences from the game Hellgate: London - needless to say, it stuck with me.
If you want to hear him sing in a low, soft whisper, check out The Hammer Has Fallen. It's one of their earliest songs, before they focused on military history.
"However, in some swedish dialects..." It really heartens me to see my dialect (the main one using the uvular trill) actually being acknowledged as swedish for a change.
"Primo Victoria", the name of the boat they were on, is also the name of another Sabaton song - worth a look! They froze on the boat, Joakim was probably bashing his leg to make sure it was still there! My Dad was RAN. His ship chased the KMS Scheer after HMS Jervis Bay was sunk - lucky for him and me he did not catch it, that time.
Kriegsmarine - 'krieg' = war, 'marine' = sea (literal), so Navy. Great band, these guys. They know their stuff too. Hope you react to some more. Those who have already suggested 'En livstid i Krig' know what they are talking about, I add my vote to that. Also recommend: 'Winged Hussars', 'The Last Stand', 'Shiroyama', 'Soldier of Heaven' and 'Race to the Sea'. Plenty of other great songs, I can't list them all here, lol. Oh and '40:1' and 'Uprising' (from I think it's Woodstock) in Poland are well worth a watch too, the crowd was so invested.
The point was that the Imperial Navy - Reichsmarine - was renamed in 1935, although the term "Kriegsmarine" was already in colloquial use to distinguish from the trading fleet (Handelsmarine).
If you didn’t notice the pocket watch in the video was from the captain of the Bismarck that mean the captain of the boat that sabaton was on served on the Bismarck or at least his like dad or grandfather did
Fantastic reaction, thanks very much! Another historical point: The Band spared the Moment, when HMS Hood got the one fatal hit very early in the first comat scene in the video. I think it was on purpose, and as I´ve heard from several naval historians who reacted on the Video, its because it was a major propaganda event for the Nazis, so they decided to NOT show this very Moment.
Thank you Beth for reacting to Sabaton they are one of my favorites. Looking forward to your "En livstid I krig" reaction, if you decide to react to it. I would also like to make a selfish request because I know you reacted to an Afrikaans song "Komma" a few years back. Can you please react to "Francois van Coke & Karen Zoid Toe vind ek jou English Subs" it is such a meaningful song with a lot of vocal skill and harmony for you to analyze.
The allied did not sink the Bismarck, they made video like this because of the game. 1 torpedo hit the rudder, preventing the ship from steering and could only go in circles, but in the wreck they found all torpedo walls, none had taken any damage at all and the only penetrations of the hull(two) was way above the water line where it have very thin armor and almost no slope. The german crew sank the ship by placing explosives on the insides, to prevent the flagship of n-germany, the pride of adolf, to fall in to the hands of the allies
What should be noted is the Bismarck was not the only ship of its class it had a sister ship Tirpitz. After chasing the Bismarck and sinking her the Royal Navy feared Tirpitz making a run of it. Tirpitz ended up getting locked down in Norway under near constant aerial bombardment never being able to leave port, got it the nickname Lonely Queen of the North.
I love how the chorus sounds almost like a marching army. The way Joakim emphasizes it like PRIDE of a NATION the BEAST made of STEEL each word sounds like a stomp
Battleships nearly always roll over when they sink. Those massive turrets are extra heavy since they are armour plated. Bismarck’s turret armour was a foot thick. The Yamato’s was 4 feet thick making one turret weigh as much as a whole fletcher class destroyer! You need to react to sabaton’s songs “Christmas truce” and “1916.”
Hi Beth. I know you love your world music. Have you ever come across a Polish group called Tulia? All-female folk group who use a technique called "white voice" or something, and the do the most beautiful, unearthly covers and original music. Their covers of Nothing Else Matters and Enjoy the Silence bring me to tears every time.
In case anyone's wondering, the Royal Navy's best warships...HMS Rodney and HMS King George V...along with cruisers Dorsetshire and Sheffield...spent more than 2 hours pummeling Bismarck in the final engagement. Rodney even put a torpedo into Bismarck, becoming the only battleship in all of history to torpedo another ship. And Bismarck still wouldn't sink. Dorsetshire put a spread of torpedoes into Bismarck and THAT wasn't enough. Bismarck's own crew had to put her down with scuttling charges.
Sabaton's a wonderous rabbit hole to dive into especially if, like me, you're a history buff AND a metalhead. You now absolutely must check out The Christmas Truce, all about the rl truce of 1914, though that might actually be best saved for December since it's relatively close. Shiroyama and Rorke's Drift are another couple I'd recommend off the top of my head but I could go on.
The wreck of Bismarck was discovered on 8 June 1989 by Robert Ballard, the oceanographer responsible for finding RMS Titanic. Bismarck was found to be resting on her keel at a dept of approximately 4,791 m (15,719 ft), about 650 km (400 mi) west of Brest. 48°10′N 16°12′W
I have never heard of the band or this song but it is amazing. You would have loved rocking and head banging in the sixties and seventies to the QUO . I remember when i could do that with my hair ,sadly now i cannot find it .
I like your videos a lot! Would be nice if you got more in to old (hiphop samples) Like Marvin Gaye Tammi Terrell Ann Peebles The charnels Gladys knight.. A bit off but I would also love some Lesley gore videos on your channel. Love from Germany. Keep up the good work
Closer to Christmas time you have got to check our their song Christmas Truce, the cinematography is just as good if not better than their video on Bismarck, and since we all love Floor Jansen, she helps with an epic closure to the song, much love, keep doing what you do

Saw them in Phoenix two nights ago (10/18/24). Still going strong.
Very cool band who do some real good historic storytelling with music! Love that approach!
Beth still rules and still roars!
Well done, more Sabbaton please!
Fun fact: _Bismarck’s_ shipwreck was discovered by the same man who located the wreck of the _Titanic,_ Robert Ballard. 🙂
The captain of the fishing vessel was the son or grandson of the survivor you see at the end of the video. It's the same compass with the coordinates inscribed.
When Bismarck sank the Hood there were just 3 survivers out of a crew of around 1400
And they came back for a reunion for decades afterward. Sad day when the last survivor had no shipmates left.
Wow...they were just here in Wisconsin...not huge on metal but they have a unique, exciting sound...really talented! 👍
Bravo bravo bravo me encantó el vídeo la música la banda la coach ❤ todo bien Beth 👏👏🍀🍀
I really recommend watching the "making of" to this.
The boat captain at the start is the guy pulled from the water after the sinking
Finaaly Beth. Thank you
The numbers etched into the compass are the coordinates where Bismark sank.
You should really listen to Sabatons Christmas Truce, in my opinion it's a master piece. There is also a little but great surprise in the end.
@@DeReAntiqua huh? How's that contradict what I said? I was just explaining which words the name came from.
Great reaction! Great band! Great song! Great movie! Great facts!..Gorgious lady!! 😍
If you didn’t notice the pocket watch in the video was from the captain of the Bismarck that mean the captain of the boat that sabaton was on served on the Bismarck or at least his like dad or grandfather did
Another one to add to the Sabaton list - No Bullets Fly.
Night Witches full animated story. The song kicks all kinds of butt but the ending, have tissues ready. It gets me emotional every time.
When he sings they are bound by "iron and blood" it's referring to a speech by Otto Von Bismarck en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_and_Iron_(speech)
2:19 is actual footage from Bismarck, filmed from aboard one of the Allied ships that was fighting it.
I have never heard of the band or this song but it is amazing. You would have loved rocking and head banging in the sixties and seventies to the QUO . I remember when i could do that with my hair ,sadly now i cannot find it .
I just discovered this song a few months ago myself 😁
I like your videos a lot!
Would be nice if you got more in to old (hiphop samples)

A bit off but I would also love some Lesley gore videos on your channel.
Love from Germany.
Keep up the good work
I highly recommend reacting to their "Night Witches" collaboration with the Yarn Hub. Make sure it is the full animation. (Good reaction, Subbed)
sabaton history is the history channel they have
Closer to Christmas time you have got to check our their song Christmas Truce, the cinematography is just as good if not better than their video on Bismarck, and since we all love Floor Jansen, she helps with an epic closure to the song, much love, keep doing what you do
Sweden always provide the metal =)
Random info: The band Heaven Shall Burn made a song about Tirpitz, the other ship of the Bismarck class. That song has quite the different vibe.
when his and the 380 mm guns sung several songs. Im here for it. As was as shoot shells as big as trees.
Sabaton teaching history through song.
The Bismarck did more or less oneshot the "Mighty Hood" in WW2, a british Warship. Horrific stories that happend back then.
The so called "golden BB".
I would suggest their songs "Devil Dogs" and "Winged Hussars" as songs you would like.
Don’t forget “Last Dying Breath” and “Hearts of Iron”! Under-appreciated bangers if you ask me
I'd love to see your raw reaction to Archspire. The vocalist's breakneck pace is astounding.
"Not through speeches and majority decisions will the great questions of the day be decided-that was the great mistake of 1848 and 1849-but by iron and blood" From a speech held in 1862 by Otto von Bismarck.
I beg of you to do Christmas Truce by Sabaton in December.
