Have you ever asked yourself, "why are my eyes dry in the morning"? Many people wake up with dry eyes or red eyes in the morning wondering why this could be. Some people do sleep with their eyes wide open but many more people may be sleeping with their eyes only slightly cracked open.
This leaves your eyes exposed to the open air and your tear film is more likely to evaporate and dry out.
In this video, we review how some people experience poor eyelid seal while sleeping and how this can contribute to eye dryness.
We also go over the most popular dry eye treatments for having dry eyes in the morning.

    About this video:
Having dry eyes when you wake up is more common than you might think. If you wake up with dry eyes or maybe you wake up with red eyes, perhaps your eyelids are not closing 100% while you sleep. Because of this, your eyes can dry out and this will cause red, irritated dry eyes. Thankfully, there are several dry eye treatments available and we review them in this video. As always, speak with a local eye care professional regarding proper diagnosis and treatment.

Hi, I have a question but not about that video, could you help me please,
I have a new correction for my myopia, and while I can easily read or use my tablet with my ancient glasses with a short distance, like 20cm more or less and closer to 13 cm of my face,
with the new one it’s impossible to read, closer from 40cm to my face everything become unwatchable become blur and doubling,
Does my new correction has been poorly made ? Too strong ? I need to remove my glasses to see closer like 15cm and put my old to read at 20 cm, but with the new glasses It’s awful until I reach 40, perhaps 50cm far from my eyes

@@DoctorEyeHealth Could you do a video on Epithelial basement membrane dystrophy (EBMD)? I thought I suffered from bad dry eyes cauing my eye to get scarred and shriveled like a raisin because my eye doctor I went to said so. Long story short, new doctor - new diagnosis of EBMD and two debridement surgeries and it's SO much better. It was the EBMD causing the dry eye not the other way around. FYI Dr. Adams did my surgery here in Michigan and I was lucky since she used to tour the country lecturing about it.

Same thing here. I had pink eye in my left eye a few years ago and was prescribed antibiotic drops at the time. This eye has never been the same since. It was perfect before the pink eye. Now I wake up with this eye feeling dry and sandy every morning, and it stings and lasts through the day. Even with ointment - it feels dry underneath the ointment, as if it’s too thick and my eye is too sensitive without its own base oil layer being thick enough. So hard to deal with. 😞

Dry irritated eyes are often overlooked as a cause of blurry vision and ocular discomfort! The fact is that often this condition is usually a symtom of a chronic health condition (diabetes, thyroid disease, sleep apnea,...) or environmental factors which are not easily altered (professsionals working with microparticles, dusty environments, open air nature or garden settings, etc...), the key to success is to find the minimum efficient combination of drops / ointments, topical medication which controls the symptoms in order for the patients carry out their specific lyfestyles. Great topic and overview!

I've tried gel and the oil-based dry-eye ointment but they didn't do much for my dry eyes. I now wear a swimming mask to bed, which helps tremendously. It looks like a snorkel mask, but it doesn't include the nose. It fogs up soon after putting it on, so it's hard to see out of (to read a clock I just slip it off for a second). It even seems to improve the health of my corneas - I tend to use less eye drops during the day now.

My eyes have got drier after getting LASEK done. Which was completely useless, as my eyesight quickly very regressed. I think the industry downplays the risks of dry eye in general, it wasn't even mentioned to me that the laser cuts/ablates nerves responsible for your tear film.

My current optometrist suggested punctal plugs if Xiidra and all the otc drops that I’m using not helping much.

I have dry eye problems too. Wash your face with lukewarm water when you get up in the morning.
Morning sunlight exposure between 7am to 8am helps. Do NOT look into direct sunlight! While under sunlight, I do eye exercises by moving by my eyes left-right, up-down and draw figure 8's, a few times.
The warmth that you feel on your face radiates to your eyelids. I do this and it helps. Please continue with your meds and eat healthy. Thank you Dr. Allen!

I use the gel eye drops, it’s an easy solution. Vision is a little blurry but you’re sleeping anyways. Your normal eye drops in the morning or washing your face will take care of that. If you don’t have time for that, then it will wash out having a shower or else within a few hours of waking up on it’s own.

Great info Doc…I have an issue I’d love to hear your thoughts about. Some time ago I was hit in the eye by a nerf dart. I attribute my eyes not tracking together to an inervated trochlear nerve caused by that eye trauma. My Dr says he’s surprised my brain can do a good job of correction with the 4 diopters of prism added to my prescription, because his testing shows that I actually need double that. He’s hesitant to prescribe that additional prism because he thinks I might have to wear glasses all the time since I may get used to that correction and not be able to take my glasses off. Right now I need the glasses when driving or watching tv, but am able to function fine without them doing other activities. Recently, however, my tracking has been a little bit worse, so I’m researching possible options, besides the additional prism. I’m a bit concerned that eventually, even that will not be enough, because of the problem worsening. Have any ideas? Are there any high rate success procedures to correct the trochlear nerve so my muscles can properly track in unison with both eyes? Thanks

Went to nearby OPTO. who said I have dry eye..continue warm compresses and use otc pf artificial tears. I made an appt with a dry eye specialist and hoping he can help. Some days my eyesight is so bad I cannot drive. My face is now red and itchy ( not above my eyebrows but everywhere else) and not sure if it's the Ivermectin ( I don't use it all over my face) or the Doxycycline that I have used for 2 weeks due to a chalazion in that bad eye. This is a good point. I think a reason why many doctors are dismissive is because we are still in the dark ourselves. Covid does and can affect the eyes in strange ways which we are just starting to better understand. Has anything helped so far?

Makes sense my eye doctor told me not to take the gel because my eyes produce a lot of oil and it will build up with the gel because it traps everything together thus causes cyst but tbh I might do it because I think that's what happening with my eyes one day they were dry when I woke up and from that day on they were dry forever maybe my eyes are open when I sleep I might try the mask for eyes stuff because they don't use gel

Hmmmm so I’m pretty sure that dry eyes are waking me up in the middle of the night. When I lay a hand over my eyes and go back to sleep, I’ve found I then sleep very soundly. Now I suspect my eyelids may not be fully closing. Mainly I notice my eyes get dry whenever I fall asleep, even from a nap. Not so much once I get going in the am or through the day. I do live in a windy desert and when it gets hot and the wind blows, it when I visit a large hardware store, my eyes will need some drops during the day. So I think the cause of my dry eyes are a combo of lids not closing fully and being sensitive to all the dust in the air outside and also in those big box hardware stores. I did go buy some omega fish oil capsules and an eye supportive multi supplement for good measure which I’ll begin taking today. Now I’m going to try a couple things to keep my kids fully closed at night because I do need an overhead fan and now the ac running all night as nighttime temps are only down into the 90’s 🥵

I have a suggestion for a future video. Is it possible to overdose on vitamins over time and do damage to your eyes? If so which ones are potentially dangerous? I just went to my eye doctor because I have been seeing a small patch of faint blue and green rays in a circle in both eyes. After a retinal exam, he said they were fine but advised me to stop taking so many vitamins and it was supposed to clear up. I stopped all the supplements about a week ago and the problem is still there but the circles are a little fainter and smaller.

However, I’ve been eating fish white rice and veggies for dinner late afternoon and when I wake up, I don’t need eye drops immediately. I’m having salmon and Mediterranean fish.
