The John Wick films proof positive that more action movies need to be directed by former stuntmen. They’ve truly raised the bar on how action movies are shot and choreographed and I’m all for it

I know it's a bit after the fact, but a bit of feel good trivia about this movie. In the scene where John gets jumped by Josef and his boys, the actor playing the thug who killed Daisy was so upset by the scene that he apparently spent several hours just holding and petting her, and even adopted her after they finished filming the scene. She's apparently still around and quite happy with her family.
So, a bit of comfort, in a meta sense, anyway.

John spared Perkins because she gave him information. With the exception of Viktor (who was part of Daisy's killing), he spares anyone who gives him information. Francis tells him there are 27 guards are in the club ('27 kilograms' which the subtitles translate to 60lbs making that one really subtle). Perkins tells him about the stash. The 'priest' opens the security gate. John even spares Viggo in exchange for Iosef's location. The unspoken part of "Do you really want to die here, Perkins?" is if she 'gives him something' he won't kill her. It's a one-time deal, but they all take it because they all know that's how he is.
Amusingly, Francis is probably the sole survivor of Viggo's entire operation because he walks away and stays gone.

My favorite detail: The end shot of him walking off with the dog is the same spot his wife collapsed at the start.
This movie is one of the best examples of "show, don't tell" filming. So many details are just demonstrated like it's
simply part of the world and the audience is drawn into the world building figuring out the significance of things
like dinner reservations, the gold coins, the rules of the Continental... zero exposition. Great way to get a viewer invested.

36:05 Killing her would have been highly risky for John, as they were still on Continental grounds. He might have been able to justify it as self-defense while they were still in his room, he was even asked if a dinner reservation would be needed, but once they were in the hallway, all bets were off.

@@21shanks Maybe not. Think of when Winston, the hotel mgr., says "Your membership at the Continental, by thy own hand, has been revoked.." - I think that suggests that she ceased to be a member when she fired the 1st shot at John. Plus, whether John killed her in the apartment or hallway, it would have been justified as she tried to kill him first.

    • @klat2baraada579
      @klat2baraada579 Месяц назад

She ceased to be a member of the Continental when she fired the first shot at John. Therefore, she had no right of protection. If John didn't need info from her, I think he'd have shot her on the spot and claim it as self-defense. HOWEVER - that fact that John Wick is an assassin aside, he does seem to have a code of conduct for himself. And that code includes the idea that if he offers to spare someone in exchange for info, and the other person complies, he keeps his word.

Perkin's death needed to be done the way it was to establish what happens when you break the rules. Sadly, Markus's death was to give John reason to go after Vigo and the guy who plays Mayhem in those car insurance commercials. The dog he chose was the one marked for termination.

One of my favorite scenes is with Francis the tall guard outside the club. I found out later that there was actually subtext to that scene. John asks Francis if he lost weight and Francis responds with 60 pounds. Since Francis is Russian what he actually said was 27 kilograms, which is 60 pounds, but John wasn't really asking about Francis' weight loss. He was asking in code how many guards were in the club and there were 27. That's part of the reason John let him go.

It should be noted that Keanu trained heavily for the role. He is now an expert marksman who does speed shooting competitions and the like He uses his gun in the way it was intended (as opposed to being flashy and inaccurate), and reloads in the middle of fights. The realism is a nice touch to the choreography choices. He also gets rather beat up in this role.

When I first heard Keanu was doing a movie called John Wick I thought about the movie John Q which I wasn’t too keen on but when I heard the premise of the film I had to watch it. I mean a guy out for revenge cause his car was stolen and his puppy killed. The thing that makes these movies so good is the accuracy of it. They reload when they use a clip. There no unlimited bullets in a clip. The director being a former stuntman for Keanu Reeves has made this movie so great. He knows when a double is needed and when Keanu can do it himself. The only time he didn’t do a stunt (or action scene cause he says he isn’t a stuntman) is when he and the director decided that even a seasoned stuntman would get hurt bad doing it. The club fight scene Keanu had a high fever and still did it. They did use a stunt double on the fall off the club balcony and used the flashing lights to hide to switch. 25:40 the thing though they can’t do business in the hotel. The hotel is supposed to be a safe zone for everyone. I think that Willem DaFoe’s character and the Continental staff were working together cause they gave John the perfect room for DaFoe’s character to watch over him. 30:24 they want him to suffer. If they put a bullet in his head then he’s dead and there’s no suffering over what he did. 40:06 the dog he chose was scheduled to be put down so since he was getting a second chance at life he gave that dog a second chance.

I saw a body language analysis of the scene between Viggo and John in which it was explained that Viggo has a great deal of respect for John, but does not fear him. This is why he's the boss, feared and respected by his men...he's actually quite dangerous and committed. His need to confront John directly may end up being a mistake in the long run, but its necessary to remind everyone who is in charge around here and is true to his character. You see this again during the end sequence where he is having a great time during the chase scene and then doesn't hesitate to challenge John himself.

They played him as the villain as they revealed him. It was a novel idea that draws you in as you keep going "Who is this guy?"
The hotel's rules are sacrosanct. John didn't kill Penny because she was still on the hotel grounds. He knew they'd take care of her. He just didn't know she'd get away from is friend. What's more, they may have shown mercy, but she killed the other guy without even a contract in place. They were going to kill her no matter what. The importance of that rule (no business on hotel grounds) is explained in more detail in the following movies.

Some of the casting in this is pure genius. I mean you have the obvious choices like Alfie Allen playing the little shit... but there are "deeper" choices. The big two are Defoe and Kevin Nash.
We are so used to Defoe as the villain, it leaves us guessing right up to the reveal. That is an amazing job on the part of the casting director.
One you missed was Kevin Nash as "Francis". He's a pro wrestler and when you see him in a movie, you automatically assume there's going to be a big knock-down drag-out fight. To use him as a guy who John respects and tells "Why don't you take the night off" ? Utter genius as those of us who know the actor, would NEVER have predicted it playing out that way.
There are subtleties like that all over the movie.

"John should not have been merciful to Viggo. He should have killed him when he had the chance."
    No and no.
John made a deal with Perkins. "Tell me something or you die."
    She did.
If he killed her, then he'd be breaking his part of the deal.
John made a deal with Viggo. "Tell me where your son is or you die."
    He did.
If he killed him, then he'd be breaking his part of the deal.
    John's better than that.
Unlike Perkins and Viggo, John Wick believes in honor.
    He lives by it.
Yeah, now Marcus is dead and John nearly died too.
But breaking his word is a fate worse than death, to him.
Why is this so important to the story?
John Wick is an anti-hero but at least he has honor and is true to his word.
If you don't cross him, he'll be a loyal friend even if it kills him.
While he's a vicious assassin who has murdered many people for nothing more than a paycheck, at least he is not as despicable as the rest of these lying, cheating, murderers he's killing.
So we can root for John because he's the best of all of them.

Keanu Reeves does have black belts in real life! In fact, he has earned multiple black belts in different martial arts. He has a black belt in karate, as well as a black belt in judo. He is also proficient in jiu-jitsu and kickboxing. His martial arts skills have helped him in his acting career, as he is known for performing his own stunts.

The clipboard on front of cage said "Put Down". Viggo was stabbed in neck at an angle that would have cut into the right coronary artery that stems from aorta. With all the physical exertion of the fight and the cold water from the rain cooling the body he should have bled out in 2.5 to 5 minutes without surgical intervention within that time.

Love this reaction! ❤ Two things #1when John spared Viggo it's because he asked John to spare him if he told John where his son was which he did so John is just being a man of his word #2 he didn't kill Perkins because it's against Continental rules to kill anyone in the hotel he was obeying the rules. Also fun fact that dog was scheduled to be put down that's how John chose him

This is a fantastic franchise. I'm glad you've enjoyed it! The action scenes are certainly top notch. Keanu spent a lot of time training with various weapons as well as hand to hand combat techniques, including Judo and Muay Tai. He really knows how to do the things he's doing on screen. It's not all quick cuts and stunt doubles. Keanu Reeves is quite literally one of the most dangerous people in Hollywood. If you're at all interested in behind the scenes stuff you should look up some of his training sessions on here. Looking forward to seeing you check out the next one!

It's similar in feel, however it has more of a sense of humor (slightly.) BTW KR trained 8 hours a day for months to prepare for this film, and did it again for every sequel as well.

Love a woman who knows her Mustangs! This whole series is built upon a love story, but it's also about the tension between order and chaos.. John was a force for order, until Iosef introduced chaos to the situation. That's why Jimmy doesn't have an issue with the dead bodies in John's house - he knows John kills a LOT of bad guys. I expect John's final scene in the Mustang does not have Daisy in the car - because I suspect he's been thinking about just... not hitting the brakes. Until Daisy arrived, his life was empty.

A few things to answer your questions...
    ,
First: John did not kill Perkins because at the hotel Continental, there can be no Business conducted (No killings), or expect huge penalties (which is why her membership was later ended, as well as her life by Continental men.), John knew she was a dead women already, killing her, only stops him from getting his revenge because of hotel policy.
Second: Just killing John is too quick. Assassins kill quickly their target because they have no emotional attachment to their target, but when they know the person, and there is extra issues between the assassin and they have them tied up, killing quick is too easy for the Victim, the Assassin wants the victim to suffer knowing he's about to die, It's human nature to want to inflict as much pain as possible (John also did that in the Club, you can go back and watch it, he has Iosef in his sights, but instead decides to shoot another guard he has on his knees already dying while never taking eyes off of Iosef, to allow him to slowly think about it), when John see's Iosef the second time after the club, he got what he wanted, he allowed him to think about it long enough, so that is why this time he quickly Kills him...Well, after Killing his guards to allow him a final think about what is coming moment.
Also Assassins wants to slowly show the victim I beat you, you're about to die at my hands, But Viggo did not do the killing because being the boss, he believes it's beneath him, and would have given John a bit of the power back to be forced to kill him personally, instead of having his men do it, as well as it also keeps Viggo's hands clean.
Finally: As far as after getting the Information from Viggo of where his son was, John also had him remove the contract, so that meant nobody (Including Viggo could Kill John. There is a code in their world where once you make a promise, you stick by it, no matter what, even the Killing of his son) Unfortunately, Viggo never said anything about Marcus, and once he found out he helped John, he decided to get his revenge and hurt John by slowly Torturing, then Killing Marcus. This is also why Viggo was quickly trying to leave in Helicopter before John found him.

About the villain moment after John is knocked out: in that scene we get three revelations in rapid succession. Revelation 1: Vigo knows what john is capable of, but he doesn't understand who John is. Revelation 2: It's not about the dog, it's about what that dog represented. For pet owners like us, that is nothing new, but Vigo fails to understand it, reinforcing the first revelation and simultaneously declaring John's resolve. Revelation 3: WILLAM DAFOE! Personally, I think that's worth a cliche or two.

Generally, in a multiple attacker situation, there is an alpha who is the one that leads the fight. The others may take a few cheap shots, but they generally don't get in the way of the alpha. If the alpha is defeated, it is possible a new alpha will take over. Sometimes, however, if the alpha is defeated, the others will tend to back off. There is a wide spectrum of cowardice to bravery in the crowd surrounding the alpha. So there might be a good number of the crowd that are only feeling a false sense of bravery as long as the alpha (the one they are looking up to to carry the fight) is still standing. Obviously, this isn't 100% for every situation, but it is common. Hope that answers the multiple attacker question somewhat.

Watch the second movie and you will find out what happens when you do business on Continental grounds. He didn't kill her because he knows what happens when you kill someone on Continental grounds. And the reason he let Viggo go was because he was thankful for him for letting him leave that life and be with his wife. He basically gave Viggo an out and Viggo threw it away by killing Marcus.

You wondered why he chose that particular dog at the end. Apparently that's a shelter, not a vet, and the paperwork on his cage says he's scheduled to be euthanized the next day. (The typical reasons would be to free up space, and they chose him because he hasn't been adopted fast enough or because there's less demand for his powerful breed.).

@@victorayala9541 Wrong. There are plenty of clues given in the movie to clarify that self-defense is permitted.
First, Wick gave Perkins a choice "Do you wanna die here, Perkins? Give me something." Wick wouldn't have made that threat if he wasn't able to follow through, and Perkins wouldn't have conceded if she knew he couldn't do it. She didn't even protest.
Second: Charon asked if Wick needed a dinner reservation, a service that would've been denied him had he broken the rules. Wick said he would let him know, indicating that he hadn't decided to kill her or not. Again, there was no warning or protest given.
Third, Harry (who knew both Wick and Perkins, as well as knowing the rules) was surprised that Wick was willing to "catch and release" someone who had tried to kill him.
Plus, it's ridiculous to suggest that self-defense wouldn't be permitted. The logic behind the rule is that if the intended victim doesn't kill you, the hotel management would. Basically saying you're screwed regardless of whether or not you're successful.
Wick demonstrated throughout the movie (throughout the whole franchise really) that he would let people live if they helped him. Francis, Perkins, the Priest. He let her live for that reason.

An ancient order called Assa-sins used to accept only gold as payment (weight in gold) for their services such as espionage, murder, or counterintelligence. It adds to the believability of the movie since there is precedence in real history. Some even argue that this is the origin of the Beggars Guild in China's past as well as the Ninja of Japan. John Wick kills 77 in this movie.
