This line in Vicarious is one of my favorite lines ever, not just in music:
"Credulous at best, your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men.
Pull your head on out your hippy haze and give a listen.
Shouldn't have to say it all again.
The universe is hostile. so Impersonal. devour to survive.
So it is. So it's always been."

Intriguing passage! Is it possible to agree completely at the same time as still kinda stubbornly being that person he's talking about? Cos that'd probably be where I am, unless I'm missing some context.

Definitely up there. Maynard writes really good lyrics, but these were brilliant. He was able to convey humans as merely a creation of the universe and thus we are also hostile, violent, and chaotic, though he is much more eloquent with his delivery. He really has a yin and yang style of writing lyrics to put it simply; he can dig in deep to find the light and the dark.

Fun anecdote: The drums on Ticks and Leeches were done in one take! If you listen carefully, at the very end of the track you can hear Danny saying "You f*ckin' bastards!" Apparently, the rest of the band knew he was trying to do it in one take, so they were doing everything they could to distract him or make him laugh through the sound booth window, including throwing a pie in someone's face.
A lot of Tool fans don't know that story!
Edit: I've had several requests for the source. It is from the April 2015 Newsletter which can still be found on their website. Here's the full text from Blair- bear in mind formatting issues:
"Enjoying those new MO-FI headphones, are you… You are right ‚Äì it wasn‚Äôt left there by mistake. Here‚Äôs what happened: Even though the song is one of the most difficult for Danny to play, prior to tracking it, he bet one of the band members that he would knock it out in a single take. Being a scratch track to the others, once the recording button was pressed, the band member that Danny had the bet with did everything that he could to distract him, even going as far as shoving a shaving cream pie into the face of another band member. Despite these comedic antics, Danny made it through the tune in one (flawless) take… with his choice expletives recorded at the end."

I just think about all the doors listening to Tool has opened for me. Obviously APC and Puscifer, but without Tool, I probably would never have found Mastodon, Karnivool, Porcupine Tree, Pineapple Thief, Animals As Leaders, Chon, Cog, Dead Letter Circus.... The list goes on. Even branching out into much heavier stuff like Rivers Of Nihil, Beyond Creation, and Opeth. Tool taught me to actually listen to the music, not just the song and it completely opened my eyes and ears. I even appreciate my favorite band, Pink Floyd, because of Tool.

Fun fact about Adam's playing on 10,000 Days. He was actually inspired by Meshuggah after having listened to them and having them open for them during part of the Lateralus tour. The way they chug or play their Djent style of guitar, is what made Adam wanna learn different techniques they used. Don't quote me. If you Google both bands and Adam, I'm sure you can find it. I remember reading or watching Adam talk about it. And it's not like Adam just stole something. He tastefully took bits and pieces and carefully placed them throughout the album. He plays differently to other albums. It shows.

All the breakdowns, explanations, insights and pointing out of the little things the pure listener might miss. It's definitely enhanced my perception of music, introduced me to new bands or songs, I think some of those insights have even inspired and spilled over into my own music.

I feel like in most of Tool's music, there's a beat, which isn't played, but instead emerges from the empty spaces between all the interwoven layers. I think this is why a pure listener, who knows absolutely nothing about music theory or rhythm can feel a deep connection on their first listen. As you say, it's all about biorhythms

Vicarious is a fantastic song. I love the lyrics. Basically it's about how humans have this desire, whether they'll admit or not, to witness death and tragedy. So long as it's from a good safe distance. "Vicariously I live while the whole world dies."

    • @JWar-
      @JWar- 3 года назад +1

Another dynamic I think exists in the song is how we lie to ourselves to hide our nature from ourselves. We watch the horrors in the news and say "Oh, how sad :( " As if we should/could change things. It's a cope. The first step to self actualization is to fully accept what you are. "Vicariously I live while the whole world dies" is sung with a feigned sadness and regret. At the end of the song it is sung with full acceptance, almost a goal. Mask off. "Much better you than I"

Vicarious was the first single off 10K days('06), it's about people "living" vicariously through the media we consume, and how we crave violence and in our modern society we fulfill that craving vicariously through violent media/movies/vid games etc.
Stinkfist has a double meaning, it is jokingly about anal fisting(Maynard has a weird sense of humor), that is what the name means, but that is just a medium to describe much deeper issues that go from loneliness, meanings of human existence, purposes and goals in life, even love, Maynard has explained that it is about "choosing compassion over fear", and also about over-stimulation of the culture with bullshit, it was the first track/single off of Aenima('96) and Tool's 3rd "radio single" that was the song that made them "famous"(after Sober and Prison Sex, their first "singles"), with the video played heavily on MTV and still in heavy rotation on rock radio to this day.
Tick & Leaches(Lateralus, '01) is a "fuck you" to record industry execs trying to push Tool to more of a "nu-metal" sound, remember at that time nu metal was "the thing" that was happening with hard rock and metal(hell even Slayer put out a sorta-nu-metal-influenced-record Diabolus In Musica). Well someone told Maynard to "scream like the nu metal bands like Slipknot do because that was the in thing at the time", so he went ALL OUT and gave em those shreaking screams, the hardest throaty screams anyone ever did ever lmao, fucking record execs trying to 'suck Maynard dry"... buncha Ticks & Leaches, and also song lengths were short and radio friendly in nu metal so Tool made the track super long, more generally it is about someone who uses other people for gains..

All the band members were on point, and Maynard landed "that scream", although you could tell they had massive reverb and delay on his vocals during that part. I've seen Tool live probably 11 or 12 times in the last 25 years, and while they NEVER disappoint with their live show, THAT particular show was just 100% flawless. From their playing, to the lighting effects and the venue sound, it was absolutely one of two of my favorite Tool live experiences (the other being the time I saw them at Memorial Hall with a crowd of MAYBE 1000 people).

Always the best, this time im 40 and got a seat looking at the acoustics and visuals full on instead of just standing room only. Other than NIN, Tool is the best live show followed by Puscifer. Rumor is Ticks and Leeches was directed at the record company execs. They wanted a radio friendly song added after recording was complete. So Tool gave them this. They even added the middle part to guarantee stations couldn't play the song. The lyrics are pretty straight forward on this.

Oddly enough I remember a local rock radio station played this song the day the album was released.
Not sure if it ever got played on radio again after that...but it was the first track I heard from Lateralus.
Bought the CD later that week on payday expecting more heavy tracks like ticks and leeches. The grudge was a good start..but the rest of the album felt disappointing. Until I listened to it a few more times then it became all I listened to for a long time.

Thanks for this channel, Geebz. You are so much more than a reaction channel. There are "reaction" channels out there where the person listens to the song and literally offers nothing - no commentary, no perspective, no insight, barely even a reaction or discussion of what they feel or think. Must purely be for clout. You attract viewers because you are the opposite, and we are forever grateful for your insights but also your willingness to listen to just about anything. This channel rules, and we look forward to your return!

Spot on with your assessment of Tool being a struggle for some - the music truly does take a willing investment of time and head space. Even as a huge fan there are songs of theirs that have taken me many years to get back to and digest, and appreciate as a whole. This being said, the investment is worth it; their music is timeless, and will be (and already is TBH) celebrated long after we are all dust, not to mention long after we stop caring about that 4-minute made-for-radio 1-hit wonder.

Tool, like Meshuggah, are masters of meters and polyrhythms. The difference between them is that Meshuggah can make 4/4 sound like absolutely anything but 4/4, while Tool can make any imaginable meter feel like 4/4.
Btw Vicarious is in 5/4 but the tempo is at such a comfortable pace that each quarter note creates the pulse. By doing this, you can make pretty much any meter headbop friendly.
