Descending is special to me. First Jam was played on the 2014 tour. (Debut in Spokane which was my brother and I’s first show together). We went on to see them a dozen times after in multiple states. In 2015, they had progressed the jam some. 2019 Aftershock was the first show after the album dropped. 2 other debut’s (fear Inoc and Pneuma) Come back to Spokane 2020, we got the song in it’s entirety. Which is my favorite from the album.
Last year he sadly died of an overdose. Just months before we would see them in Spokane again. Unfortunately I went to the show alone. And as excited as I was for Rosetta, Descending was going to make me cry if they played it.
They played it. I rocked THE FUCK out as hard as I could. Tears in eyes.
Sound the revile, to be or not to be.

I love your evaluation of the song and ideas people need to hear. Tool Army are very introspective because of the Tool message. The world is a terrible place, what can I do with my thinking and actions that change the world, one life at a time.

  • @GeoffPeterson33

Sean’s commentary on how a good chorus finds deeper meaning each time definitely struck me. I’ve somehow never thought about it that way in terms of writing music. I can’t wait for Sean to dive into Schism and Wings for Marie!
Also remember this song was released when the Middle East wars were being televised around the clock. I’m a military veteran but even I was ashamed of how much “cheerleading” there was going around this country for complete destruction in Iraq/Afghanistan. That conflict was tragedy on all sides, not the damn Super Bowl.

Is this triply vicarious? The character in the song itself being vicarious, then the listener, and now the listener watching you listen to the song. Reaction videos are of course vicarious for the viewer, and in this case very informative and enjoyable. Keep it up.

This is fantastic! I dont think I've ever seen a Tool reaction done this way. We have seen all there is to say about the complex time signatures, the production quality, and the process of creating the music but never a real discussion of the lyrical content in relation to the arc of great storytelling over music. Very cerebral and extremely satisfying. Well done!

I think we have a simultaneous fear of and morbid attraction to death and seeing tragedy once or twice removed from us gives us a dim glimpse into our own future death but at least at this moment we aren’t dead, we have been spared another day; so there is a vicarious thrill in both aspects of viewing tragedy as well as the primordial relief that we weren’t playing the starring role this time.

I rarely do the L/C/S thing but this is too good not to. The fact that the vast majority of the video is analysis (and good, in depth analysis at that) is such a nice change from people who just listen and then end the video after the song is over. Amazing video and can't wait for the next!
Lateralus will blow his mind. Parabol/Parabola is also a good one. Another good couple are Stinkfist and Prison Sex...for a very particular reason. I have no idea if this is true or not but I've heard it said that the reason Maynard uses such "vile" language is to filter out the people who aren't ready for the real message being presented; if you're so turned off by the language that you miss the message, you aren't who this is for as you are also likely so superficial as to miss the forest for the trees.

    Lateralus should be next.
It's their opus and it gets into the more abstract lyrics.
The first two songs are indeed more "on the nose" and that's not super representative of Maynard's body of work with Tool (it's closer to his other bands).
A little background on the Fibonacci side of things will help set the stage as well.

I know it's fairly early into the journey, but I must recommend Disposition/Reflection/Triad from Tool's album Lateralus. It was always intended to be a single piece with three distinct movements, but for one reason or another it had to be broken up into three. They are tracks 10, 11 and 12 on the album.
It's by far my favorite piece of their music, it has had profound impact on me and who I am constantly working toward being. I wont get into my personal thoughts and theories about it, so as not to influence anything. Just know that, again in my opinion, its the Tooliest Tool Tool ever Tooled. @@PomadeJam IMO those three songs should come later. Keep giving him the story centric songs. D/R/T are more abstract and while they have a story, they aren't as defined "story wise".
I personally suggest Lateralus (song) next while giving him a heads up on the Fibonacci aspect.

@@LukeNeumann I can agree on your premise, but it's precisely because the 'story' behind D/R/T is less defined that I am suggesting it. I have seen how well they can extrapolate, so I am super curious as to what they come away with when things aren't necessarily so clear.

I would really love to see you two listen to Tool’s songs Descending together as well as Parabol/ Parabola.
From Maynard’s other bands I think it would be amazing if you did A Perfect Circles, So Long and Thanks for All the Fish. From Puscifer you two should listen to Galileo, Humbling River, Bread and Circus, Personal Prometheus, Life of Brian, and last but not least Sour Grapes.
These songs are a pretty awesome blueprint to better try and understand the mind of Maynard. I would not classify him as a nihilist at all, more of an atheistic existentialist or perhaps an existentialist with a fairly complicated spirituality.
PS, I feel a little sheepish presuming anything about Maynard, as he’s said it himself , “all ya know about me is what I sold ya…”
Anyway I love your analysis’, and it would be cool to hear a lot more on Maynard’s expanded catalog. Thanks!

I admire the tolerance of someone working in a faith environment saying "If you're a nihilist, lean into it."
I, however, am an absurdist, and consider nihilism disingenuous, and just a way to sound deep in front of edgy teenagers. I will clown on nihilists at any opportunity.
For the record, I'm pretty sure TOOL aren't nihilist. They probably have a broadly exploratory approach to philosophy, I reckon. Trying out different ideas from different philosophies as metaphorical devices toward some kind of enlightenment.
