Why the Jaguar C-X75 was too good for us

- We all think of the current hypercar ‘holy trinity’ as the McLaren P1, Porsche 918 and LaFerrari. But back in 2010, Jaguar started work on a car that would have shown those cars a thing or two.
The Jaguar C-X75 was an F1-engined hybrid hypercar well before the other manufacturers caught up. But sadly, we never saw the car take to production. We investigated just how epic this car could have been if it had made it over the line.

"Aged well" is perfectly apt, but is an understatement.

Jaguar missed out by not making this car
@Matt S well... They certainly make some appealing cars, but have you read the news recently? Falling sales, job losses, planned shut-downs... Not a good time for JLR.
Sure...after the roaring success of the XJ220 project that went soooo well... Concept building has a purpose but going to production would have been a real mess for Jaguar. Everyone woo's for the concept and when production realities are imposed, the first pre-order buyers are pissed and the order cancellations commence. Remember, the F1 was not successful in production either and is rare like the XJ220 because, they did not sale.
It's a 4 banger hybrid. I am not saying it would not sell a few units, but it was not going to be some huge profit center for the company.

I remember seeing the gas turbine prototype on TopGear, looked good just sitting there. What a great shame it never made production, a 900bhp hybrid supercar could have put Jaguar firmly on the map again. The XJ220 from the 90's is still regarded as an epic achievement, a car that today can still leave modern supercars in its wake. What a pity...
The XJ220 was an epic achievement from an engineering standpoint but also massive flop from a financial standpoint.
@@PKmode I think this would followed that should it be made today but at the time there's a chance it could have been a risk with great dividends.
@@PKmode And then came the McLaren F1
The XJ220 wasn't even approved by Jaguar's board of directors. It was made by Jaguar employees on their spare time with their own money. Then when the Detroit car show came around Jaguar had nothing to show for it and found out what their employees were doing. So they showcased that instead with a V12 engine. Demands was high yet since Jaguar never planned anything for it they never had any production lined up for it. Eventually they couldn't deliver on the v12 and opted for a v6 twin turbo from the gawd awful group B rally car. Many buyers didn't want a boring v6 and wanted their money back. Jaguar lost tons of cash and it would be years before they got back on the radar once again. Moral of the story is : Never trust a Brit cause they will double cross you just as shown on their flag. 😂
This car is by far the greatest super / Hyper car ever made. They REALLY need to put this in to production....and soon.

Let's be real for a second; this would have cost nearly twice as much as a 918. Sure, still half the cost of a P1 or LaFerrari but c'mon. On top of that, it seems Jag learned nothing from the mistake of putting a lower displacement, lower cylinder count engine into their "hypercar". The sales were dismal in the XJ220 because of the V6TT in lieu of the V12. While I understand from an engineering PoV, the buyers (you know, the guys who make or break the success by paying for the endeavor) want something more exoctic. Jag built a car for themselves yet again and not for their customers. Result: Massive waste of funds for a company facing some financial hardships. Maybe some cool trickle down tech but that's about it.
I think you have your prices wrong! LolThe 918 sold for £670,000.... this would of been £750,000 and the P1 just over 1m
The sales of the jag were shite due to the economy at the time, nothing to do with the engine! Youve been listening to some clueless prick.... similar to why the mac F1 sold poorly aswell!....
When the cars were new, these were the prices:
918 Spyder = £646,000
P1 = £866,000
LaFerrari = £1,000,000
And now they have appreciated, especially the Ferrari.
Which is why new units were still available for sale 5 years after production (and recession) ended? I vividly remember the "outrage" in the auto media over the engine switch. Its not made up. That is not to say the xj220 engine is bad, but what was "promised" was a V12 and how they treated those that tried to cancel orders was a big mistake that is still talked about in that community... The F40 was its contemporary, sold ok and outperformed the production XJ220... at a comparable price point. Super/hyper-car buyers are a finicky group and still prefer the cylinder count to be higher than lower. Mclaren had NO providence and NO existing customer base and charged a wicked premium on the F1, its first production car... with a BMW engine... the second production car came 12 years later.... it took that long for people stop saying "a Mc-what?"
There is a reason why the XJ220 tends to sale for less than original retail still.... and if you factor in inflation.... they are still underwater.
I don't think you can consider F40 and XJ220 as contemporary: they belong to two different eras. Your reasoning is correct anyway.
