Thanks for this video on oat groats Tami. I only have a 6 qt pot, thanks for adding that hint about using the 6 quart. Appreciate all the hard work that you and Tom do to help us stay healthy. take care.
Thanks for posting. This is now my go-to Groat recipe! PERFECT results! - For those who forgot - it is 3 cups BOILING water in the Instapot with 2 cups of groats, pressure cooked for 5 minutes and left to sit for 2 hours. I add a little salt to mine, I think it adds to the flavor.
question: on the Bob's whole groats package, it says "1 cup" of groats to 3 cups of water, but you say 2 cups of groats. The package recipe is for cooking on a stove top. Is the use of the IP pressure cooker the reason for doubling the groats?
Big fan of oat groats! I cook 2C groats, 5C DIY cold broth (add water if not enough broth available), finely chopped fairly large onion, lots of garlic finely chopped, some ginger, a few shallots to a large steel bowl, put 1-2 inches water in the 6-quart IP insert, and do 45M high pressure. When it's done, I add the acorn squash that I steamed previously in IP (separate the seeds because they're fabulous roasted) and I add other stuff to the groat/acorn squash bowl during the week. Soooo good!!
Wow… SO perfect… JUST the way i love it!! Thanks for the great recipe. Seems like you re the only one with these proportions and the timing. Thanks you thank you!!!
I recommend sorting and rinsing the oat groats like you do beans. I found a small stone in mine from the WF bulk bin. Thank you for this tutorial. Now we make these regularly. :)
Any grain or bean should be at least rinsed, if not sorted! Soaking grains beforehand for 8-24 hrs makes the nutrients absorbable- see Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon Oats need 24 hrs. Rice and lentils or split peas, 6-7. Wide range.

Hi, Tami. Thanks so much for all the info on Nutmeg Notebook! I’ve made these oat groats twice in my mini Instant Pot. They were delicious! We eat Steele cut oats. We put one cup of oats with 4 cups water in a pot. We bring it to a boil, turn them off and leave them over night with the lid on. When we get up in the morning they are cooked. We put them in 2 bowls, microwave and breakfast is ready. Fast and easy and healthy and cheap and delicious!
Erin does this method result in a porridge? I didn't care for oat groats as a porridge and wanted it to be like a side dish grain more like brown rice.

thanks so much for the sincere help. have had many strokes and very high cholesterol despite Dr.McDougalls diet. Read groats are very good as is barley for this problem.
Thanks for sharing. I followed your instructions and they were one big mushy glob stuck in the pressure cooker. Do you do low or high pressure? Maybe my water needed to be hotter?
I use high pressure, boiling water and let it stay on warm for 2 hours after it is done cooking. This allows it to soak up all of the water. I have never had it come out lumpy. It works perfectly every time.
One tip, you can set the instant pot on time delay e.g. 5h and it will be ready just in time for breakfast, use cold water, bc makes no difference overnight.
Exactly what I do. Also, allowing time to let it sit after cooking instead of increasing the cooking time results in a much better texture without the layer of water on top and mushy grains on the bottom.
I love this recipe but it makes more than I can eat in 3 or 4 days. Two questions: how long can it sit in the fridge without going bad? Would the recipe work using 1 up of oat groats and 1 1/2 cups of water? Thank you Tami!
I freeze mine in 1/2 cup portions. I have kept it in the fridge for 5 days no problem. I haven't tried making a smaller quantity but I don't know why it wouldn't work.
I appreciate your videos. Thank you for all your ideas! I already have oat groats. I'm going to try this. I usually make steel cut overnight using the timer feature. I wonder if oat groats would work that way.
It worked great! We were traveling. I took my little Instant Pot to the hotel along with oat groats and fruit to top it with. It cooked while we slept and was ready for breakfast. above is the amazon link, it is chrome plated solid copper so it is quite expensive for a tea kettle, but we have had it for many years (at least 15) and it still looks new!, heats up very fast, Made in England, and reminds us of our Grand Mothers ;) we found ours at Williams Sonoma, they are $10 more than our Amazon link.
No mention of pressure setting -low,med or high-or did i miss that?
Thank you.
You are welcome!

Yes that is correct.
I wonder if it would make any difference if the oat groats were soaked overnight prior to cooking? Anybody?
I don't want them to be soaked because I don't want them to get soft and mushy. This method is to turn out oat groats that are more like cooked brown rice and not like porridge. Be sure to subscribe and visit our blog for lots more recipes. www.nutmegnotebook.com
