Hi Tammy I truly love your videos you're so simple to follow you talk so smooth and so clear and slow so easy to understand and follow it's hard for for some of us to follow read keep up and I just appreciate you so much
Thank you for all your tips and product information. I, too, enjoy vegetable pot liquor. You are the first person I know who has mentioned drinking it, rather than saving it for a recipe.❤
This vegetable dish a game change for eating vegetables in the morning. I made the recipe today (with addition of diced tomato's) and it is great. I cannot get enough vegetables. The pot liquor is very delicious. Now I know what the big deal is about pot liquor.
Sometimes I will let the pot liquor come to room temperature and give some to my house plants to enjoy as the plants need vitamins and minerals too. So I share! 🙂
Thank you for the video. Did you know that you can toggle the keep warm function on and off? After setting your time and pressure, if you press "manual" twice instead of once, it shuts off the keep warm so that the IP shuts off completely when done cooking. If you press "manual" a third time, it toggles back to keep warm on. And so forth.
Honestly? Fabulous. Have just become an IP owner because I love pearl barley, as opposed to rice. This is great. The zero minutes technique works for so many non-starchy vegetables. Lots of love from the UK. 👍🇬🇧😀
Thank you. I like to comment about starting the day with veggies to keep your blood sugar stable. I have been following Bright Line Eating for two years, and this is also the emphasis - 3 servings of veggies a day. I love how I feel when I use veggies to fill me up rather than breads.
Bravo to non starchy veggies to start the day! Be sure to subscribe to our blog and get 2 exclusive recipes for subscribers only at www.nutmegnotebook.com
0 minutes -cool, just got mine Today! Try this one tomorrow. Apologize but try to eat something u can handle early mornings as tummy jucies can effect things later in life. Wonderful video, tnx Again!
LOve that steam pipe ! What I do is but a thick cutting board on my stove top and put the IP on that, when i release I use the hood fan to have it suck up the air
I love what she said about not eating breakfast (that's me) and pot liquor (never thought of keeping it), but, wouldn't using a steamer basket make the process a lot easier?
Hello from Rocklin for Tammi and Tom. We just watched this and got two important tips. One was setting time to ZERO. We gave up on steaming with the IP because 1 minute was too long. Second was to drink the water. Let us share 2 tips for you. Check out the neat Instant Pot Steamer Basket which just fits our 6 qt. instant pot. It's feet keep the veggies out of the water. A second tip would be to use less water to speed up the process. Of course that would mean less pot liquor. You and Tom can sort that out. Great show!! Jim & Teddie
This is the first time watching your show (from a google link) and I have to say I enjoyed it very much! Great relaxed presentation and informative. Cheers!
Thank you! Never thought of drinking the pot liquor. I do recall pot liquor being associated w/ collard greens & the like - which ppl drank. So, stands to reason one would drink that of most vegetables. Great idea!
Pot liquor is delicious! Thank you for introducing me to it. I was suspicious vegetable water could be tasty and you were exactly right! I will incorporating these steamed veggies into my weekly routine from now on! (You're videos are also so warm and approachable. Love 'em! Keep up the great work!!)
I don’t have set times to eat. I eat when I’m hungry or when time allows - just depends on our schedule for the given day. I like to be done with the evening meal by 7:00.
Excellent video! I just discovered you and your wonderful video. You thought me new things I never knew, i.e., pot liquor, PVC pipe to control steam release, and, most importantly, steaming pre-cut vegetables! You are awesome and calm at the same time. I am going to steam vegs and drink pot liquor after this comment. Again, thank you so much for teaching me/us new ways to eat healthier. Love it!
Welcome to the Channel Dame Nina, we are glad you found us. PS....the elbow fitting only fits over the instant pot Duo, They made the release valve differrently on the newer model and now it does not fit, its too small :-1
I just hit the jackpot in discovering this video when I was searching for how to steam Broccoli. I enjoyed it so much, I certainly will be joining and looking for more helpful Instant Pot cooking from you. I just purchased the Duo Plus 9-in-one, and am in the learning stage. I had seen the Elbow tip, but now will certainly purchase one at the 45 degree opposed to the 90 degree elbows that are being sold especially for the pot. Stands to reason why a 45 is better than 90. Please keep your videos like this coming.
Hope it's not still sitting in the box...there's an awesome vegan InstantPot fb page and the big joke is how some folks tell us they have received the pot as a gift and yet, months later, still not unboxed. LOL! This Instant Pot thing is TREMENDOUS...I LOVE it! hope you do too!

Oh my goodness! Setting the instant pot to zero was a game changer. Thank you! I knows I shouldn’t think about this but I wonder how many calories are in the pot liquor.
Zero minutes??!! Who would have thought? Great tip. I wonder if the pot liquor would make a good broth for cooking. I love my pot liquor from my iPot kale. Looks awesome.
Thank youuuu so much for this video, but what are other ways to use dried mushrooms?? Do you have videos on that or can you make one in the near future? Than you for ur response
We don't use them in any other way ourselves. But you could rehydrate them and use them in other recipes, soups, stews and sauteed veggies. Happy Cooking!
Deciding whether to buy one. I use a rice cooker with a steamer basket. It looks like it probably takes the same amount of time. I have two slow cookers and a rice cooker. Thanks for the ideas about the pot holder, the vent, and saving the "Pot Liquor". I make green smoothies and I think that would be good for that. I also like the stainless steel insert. I make brown rice and steel cut oatmeal and it sticks to my rice cooker.
I have 3 Instant Pots and 1 Cuisinart pressure cooker, 2 slow cookers and a rice cooker. I still like using my rice cooker for rice. The instant pots are amazing - sometimes I have all 3 going at the same time. The pressure cookers are such a time saver!
adorabledolldesigns if there is gunk stuck...I like to spray some vinegar and then add a bit of baking soda and spray a lil bit more of vinegar until in bubbles....leave in for 15 min or less....Scrub and good as new!!!
HEY...!!!!......WAY TO GO..... 0 MINUTES,....YEAH,...I WAS DOING 1,,OR 2,,, BUT TOO MUSHY,...I WILL RE-ADJUST THAT TIME IMMEDIATELY.....DOING THIS AT NOON TODAY...THANX FOR ALL THE TIPS,,,,, ADAM SMITH ONTARIO CANADA...
Hi Tami, excellent video, I just ordered the steam diverter. Thank you! I know the time setting is zero minutes but what temperature setting do you use? I must have missed that fact in the video.
I have been using the manual button at zero, but I have a steam option, which I just put it at zero. I hope it works. With it on manual, I feel like it cooked too much. Do you have a steam button? Is that what you use?
I like the Napa Valley Naturals Grand Reserve Vinegar that I buy at Whole Foods and also the California Balsamic -www.californiabalsamic.com if you put Nutmeg Notebook in the comment section at the check out you get 2 gree sample bottles with your order.
I think we got those at Costco.Thank you for watching if you haven't already be sure to subscribe to the blog and get your two exclusive recipes just for subscribers - plus we have hundreds of recipes there that we haven't yet made videos for! www.nutmegnotebook.com
I have never used the steam setting, just high pressure 0 minutes. we don't use the basket either as we want the veggies in contact with the water to make the pot liquor. I am unaware off what changes occur in the "steam" setting.
Tami I love all your tips & ipot gadgets! What a great way to get in more veggies. I hope you do more videos like this, I'd love to learn how to utilize frozen bags of greens, collards, kale, etc. Btw: Could I use frozen mushrooms? If so, how many ounces would you add to equal the dried??
Yes, you can pick it up at any hardware store, (45degree though, not 90) The one we show in the description fits the Instant Pot Duo. Check the total diameter of your steam relaese valve though as Instant Pot changed there valve on thier newer models and our fitting does not fit the new IP. would need the next size bigger.
There isn't a Trader Joe' or Costco where I live. You can probably use a PVC 45 degree angle from the plumbing department in Home Depot, which we don't have here either.
OMG! I made these today - had to improvise a bit, but you're right! Absolutely scrumptious -- and I don't like a lot of the veggies I used! Go figure! Mega thanks.... AGAIN!
Hello Eugene, This is Tom---please visit www.nutmegnotebook.com/shop You will find the common pipe fitting there next to the instant pot items. nothing special, just a plastic pipe fitting, we tried one of the commercial ones and it didn't work well- the weight of it messed with the valve seal. Best Regards Tom--NutmegNotebook.com
The device you used for redirecting the steam is awesome! Does that have a name? What do I ask for? Maybe on Amazon? Thank you SO much. This steam has been problematic for me as I’m always concerned about the steam rising towards the ceiling (and yes, it would be ultimately more convenient operating under a cabinet). Head bow to you.
Hello Marian It is a 1 1/2 inch NIBCO PVC Street Elbow, a type of plumbers fitting Here is the amazon affiliate link, amzn.to/2Fk9i6w It is also carried at most hardware stores but easy to order on amazon!
My ultra measures 1-1/4 across on the vent so a 1-1/2 dia should work on it also. Though too wide and it sits on top of the pressure float button. Nice idea.
thanks for your video. i have an issue with my instant pot. i also like steamed veggies al dente. so i dropped my veggies into the pot and added 2.5 cups of water. my instant pot does not have a 'manual' button, so i assume 'pressure cook' is the same. i pressed that and set the time for 0 minutes. i waited for 15 minutes and the timer never kicked in. the display just said 'on'. so i got worried and flipped the vent lever open. the instant pot vented for 30 minutes until all of the liquid inside had steamed out and left me with a pile of veggie mush. any tips or suggestions?
i was cooking broccoli and cauliflower together. i think these two veggies are just too fragile for pressure steaming. i will steam those on the stove top. :)
So I don't need a pot or basket to steam my veggies? How cool is it that I wanted to watch a 'how to steam veg in instant pot' video and the first video I came across is by someone eating a plant based diet?!
Your method seems to be boiled and not steamed vegetables as the food is in the water and not above it. Is it possible to actually steam food WITHOUT pressure in the Instant Pot?
We don't use the basket as we want the veggies in contact with the water to make the pot liquor. The instant pot does have a special "Steam Setting" to use with a basket to keep the veggies above the water.
Amazing video, Do you find sand in dry mushrooms? I bought those before at Costco and the sand on my teeth turned me away from them forever;( is there any trick how to get rid of it? Thank you
Pressing manual means pressure cooking, not lightly steaming, doesn't it? I'm looking for a video showing the use of the steaming button because I want my food to be more alive than pressure blasting it.
Ask for a Nibco ABS #5806-2 street elbow Black (2 in. ABS DWV 45 Degree Spigot x Hub Street Elbow) here is their link www.homedepot.com/p/NIBCO-2-in-ABS-DWV-45-Degree-Spigot-x-Hub-Street-Elbow-C58062HD2/100343877?MERCH=REC-_-SearchPLPHorizontal1_rr-_-NA-_-100343877-_-N
They will not have any idea what we are using it for but please see the other reply for what to get in the plumbing section at Home Depot. it is also available on our amazon nutmeg notebook page here amzn.to/2GNZzr4
Great! Michael Greger MD has a new video on pressure cooking greens too at nutritionfacts.org! I LOVE your idea of the dried mushrooms...I don't belong to Costco but a co-worker does and I know he'd pick it up for me. THANKS!
You are so welcome - we love Costco - so much organic produce at great prices! If you haven't already be sure to subscribe to our channel and the blog to get your 2 exclusive recipes just for subscribers at www.nutmegnoteook.com

I'm confuse. When steaming something it usually means that the veggies don't touch the water. They are cooked by steam only. Meaning the water is below the steam basket.
We don"t use the steamer basket usually as we like that 2 1/2 cups of water in the bottom of the pot to turn into that wonderful tasting pot liquor. the veggies fill the pot nearly 2/3 full so the majority of the veggies are 'Steamed" and the bottom 1 inch layer is immersed in the water. We have used the steamer insert shown here amzn.to/2SkDPnY and use only two cups of water and you will get 100% steamed veggies. and no pot liquor. If you prefer.
I just bought the Costco dried mushrooms. The instructions are way too much work! I've been soaking mine overnight in the refrigerator. I like your method. Just take some mushrooms out of the jar, and add them to the pot. No soaking, washing.
Since making the video we have discovered that when you get down to the bottom of the container there can be some sandy grit in the mushrooms and they do need a rinse!
THANK YOU, I WILL BE DOING THIS TODAY AS I FIX A WEEK OR SO OF MEALS AT A TIME AND THEN FREEZE IN A DIVIDED CONTAINER WITH MEAT SO I CAN THRAW AND REHEAT. I ALSO LIKE CRUNCY STEAM VEGGIES!! NOT LIMPLY OR TO SOFT, 😀I ALSO NOTICE YOU DID NOT ADD A STEAM BASKET, NO EXTRA EXPENSIVE ITEM TO BUY. 😁
Then use the pressure cook button to set your time. IP has different models and the button functions can be different depending on what model you have.
Yes, Thank You, we will add it tomorrow, it is Napa Valley Naturals Grand Reserve 4% acidity, we get it at Whole Foods or direct from the company's web site.
We use "0" minutes as the vegies are done by the time it reaches temperature. so no additional time is needed. more time may only make them mushy. Happy Cooking Tami

You "steamed" veggies, but I didn't see you use any kind of strainer in the bottom of the instant pot. Did you have something on the bottom that you didn't show? Thanks so much for all you do! I follow you religiously! :)
No I didn't use any kind of strainer because I want the water to become flavored from the vegetables so I can also consume it. Thank you for following me - I really appreciate it!
No, just the manual setting for pressure cook 0 minutes, quick release,-- with the 2.5 cups of water this gets us the nicely cooked veggies and a delicious cup of pot liquor. The veggies are in the water while cooking.
Hi Tammy I truly love your videos you're so simple to follow you talk so smooth and so clear and slow so easy to understand and follow it's hard for for some of us to follow read keep up and I just appreciate you so much

Why did you use pressure as opposed to steam setting? Just curious because I’ve seen it done both ways.
I have never used the steam setting, just high pressure 0 minutes. we don't use the basket either as we want the veggies in contact with the water to make the pot liquor. I am unaware off what changes occur in the "steam" setting.
I think you would maintain more nutrients with the pressure. More liquid stays in the pan as opposed to steaming out. Just my opinion.

I have never used frozen mushrooms - use as many as you like - it's really personal preference.

Hey! Is that plastic piece just a piece of pvc pipe on a 90 degree angle?? Please advise. Thank You 😊
Yes, you can pick it up at any hardware store, (45degree though, not 90) The one we show in the description fits the Instant Pot Duo. Check the total diameter of your steam relaese valve though as Instant Pot changed there valve on thier newer models and our fitting does not fit the new IP. would need the next size bigger.

Be sure to subscribe to our blog where we have tons of recipes that we haven't made videos for yet. www.nutmegnotebook.com
Excellent video. Thnx.
Thank you
Very Nice..Thank You.
COULD YOU PLEASE SHARE HOW LONG TO PRESSURE STEAM A POTATOE, OR THOSE WHOLE SMALL CARROTS ETC..ROOT VEGGIES, THANK YOU IN ADVANCE

This is such a great idea.
Thank you for more ideas. Please post more ip and breville recipes 🙂
I have more videos in the works!
Amazing video, Do you find sand in dry mushrooms? I bought those before at Costco and the sand on my teeth turned me away from them forever;( is there any trick how to get rid of it? Thank you
Sometimes my husband was finding grit towards the bottom of the jar so it's a good idea to rinse them first.
Just checked the label and it states on the directions to rinse them in warm water before using - must be a common issue!
Pressing manual means pressure cooking, not lightly steaming, doesn't it? I'm looking for a video showing the use of the steaming button because I want my food to be more alive than pressure blasting it.
Steam uses “constant” heating for a faster cycle. That would likely work fine as well. I don’t know how it would affect the outcome but worth a try.
when I go to home depot do I ask for the steam vent for instant pot?
Ask for a Nibco ABS #5806-2 street elbow Black (2 in. ABS DWV 45 Degree Spigot x Hub Street Elbow)
here is their link

What is the name of that 45 degree tube you put on the IP valve?
It is a 1 1/2 inch NIBCO PVC Street Elbow, a type of plumbers fitting
Here is the amazon affiliate link, amzn.to/2Fk9i6w
It is also carried at most hardware stores but easy to order on amazon!
I had no idea that you could use the side handles to hold the lid LOL
Thank you for sharing. I enjoy watching your video and look forward to each one.
Thank you that is so nice!
We have used the steamer insert shown here amzn.to/2SkDPnY
and use only two cups of water and you will get 100% steamed veggies. and no pot liquor.
My vegetables came out perfect
Wonderful!
I learned so much from you
Aaah thank you so much - I really appreciate the feedback!
Could you put the pot juices over rice
That could be tasty!
I've used chicken broth in Spanish rice and enchiladas and the kids love it and adults alike lo
the button you used says "delay start" for me. can you explain???
Perhaps you have a different model than the one I have? Does your have a manual button?
Nutmeg Notebook mine says “pressure cook” instead of manual where that same button is
Then use the pressure cook button to set your time. IP has different models and the button functions can be different depending on what model you have.
Oh i meant to say it says delay start which doesn't seem to be right to me.
Excellent video!! :D
Thank you I appreciate your kindness!
What is the balsamic vinegar name again? Can you add to info under video?
Yes, Thank You, we will add it tomorrow, it is Napa Valley Naturals Grand Reserve 4% acidity, we get it at Whole Foods or direct from the company's web site.
Do you adjust the time only one minute..
We use "0" minutes as the vegies are done by the time it reaches temperature. so no additional time is needed. more time may only make them mushy.
Happy Cooking
Tami
Thanks

You "steamed" veggies, but I didn't see you use any kind of strainer in the bottom of the instant pot. Did you have something on the bottom that you didn't show? Thanks so much for all you do! I follow you religiously! :)
No I didn't use any kind of strainer because I want the water to become flavored from the vegetables so I can also consume it. Thank you for following me - I really appreciate it!
I appreciate you -- TOTALLY! I wouldn't have a clue of what to do with either my Breville or the instant pot!
SHE "STRAINED" THE VEGGIES OFF LATER,...KEEPING "POT LIQUOR"...WATCH AGAIN,...!!
Thanks!
Love the video
Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
Mine were still mushy :(
You didn't use the steam function on the instant pot?
No, just the manual setting for pressure cook 0 minutes, quick release,-- with the 2.5 cups of water this gets us the nicely cooked veggies and a delicious cup of pot liquor. The veggies are in the water while cooking.
NO....MANUAL DOES IT AUTOMATICALLY,....AND THE BEST....0 MINUTES OR 1 MINUTE.. FAST N EASY...!!!
