  • Watch this video to learn all about Groats and why to include these in a whole food plant based diet. Groats are the hulled kernels of various cereal grains, such as oat, wheat, rye, and barley. Groats are whole grains that include the cereal germ and fiber-rich bran portion of the grain, as well as the endosperm.
Bruce and Mindy Mylrea travel the world in a Fruit and Veggie covered RV educating on evidence based nutrition and fitness. They run the non profit One Day to Wellness.org and have received many awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award from CanFitPro. Bruce and Mindy provide lectures, seminars, and workshops at fitness and wellness conferences, schools, offices, and even cooking classes in their home. Bruce and Mindy are on track to reach a record number of people with their powerful nutrition education, which was born out of Bruce’s desire to educate himself following a diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2011. He became a plant-based eater soon after learning he had prostate cancer. So did Mindy. Today, in spite of tests showing he still has prostate cancer, Bruce feels healthier than ever, something he credits to his nutrition and wellness-focused lifestyle. They developed the One Day to Wellness certification in 2015 and have each written books The Plant Powered Approach to Prostate Cancer and The Plant Powered Penis

Groats now are a huge part of my breakfast . For the taste , nutrition, and berry like chew and mouthfeel.
After they’re cooked in the instant pot , I add flax meal, raisins , cinnamon, nutmeg , and cardamom.
Have that along with a smoothie, and I’m ready to take on the day!

I love my oat groats. I like preparing them in a savory way too. I use the crockpot to batch cook them.

I can't handle rolled oas or steel cut, but groats are great. I soak for 24 hours and then slow cook over night so it is ready when I get back from my morning walk. I do 1/4c groats, 1.75c water, 1oz walnuts, 4 prunes, a date (or 2 if small), 1T ground flax, 1T hemp, and 1/2c blueberries. I season with cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, cumin, coriander, fennel, black cumin, turmeric, and trikatu. Herbs and spices are very healthy!
Sometimes I can't eat it all, so I save the rest for lunch and make a smaller lunch.

Thanks for your recipe, do you put all of the ingredients in at once in the slow cooker, or do you add the walnuts, prunes, etc, to the already cooked groats?

@dinamariea61 I put everything in to cook together except the blueberries ... I add those just prior to eating.

Does it affect the nutrition by chopping up my groats before cooking? I like them better that way...

Aren’t oat groats the same as steel cut oats (which I understand is just oat groats cut up to cook faster)? When you talk about oatmeal, you seem to mean rolled oats…
Anyway, still a good video. I just prefer steel cut oats since they cook faster and I believe they are nutritionally the same. I agree that the add in items up the nutrition and make it taste great!

Oat groats are different than steel cut oats. Steel cut oats are slightly processed, cut up, absorbed more quickly into the bloodstream than groats.
