Hi, John. I couldn’t agree with you more regarding a Second Sight release of Romero’s Day of the Dead. It’s had numerous releases on various formats, but given the love and attention that SS dish out on all their releases, I can only imagine what Day would look like with regards to packaging and PQ. Great vid John. I’m struggling to remember a lot of the old nasties but I do remember Shogun Assassin. I seem to remember enjoying that one. TCM is in my Top 3 movies of all time. It’s such a shame it’s been diluted with all the following movies. It would have stood so much stronger on its own. I remain to be convinced about this new reboot. That’s a beautiful DOTD set.

That Redemption cover for ZL is one of the greatest pieces of Exploitation ever. Seen Lorna ... The Exorcist (1974) btw???? TTCM is still one of the most brutal films I ever saw at the pictures.

Great review John! I remember I watched The Thing on DVD and I saw it at a lot of video rentals and I remember buying it on VHS tape in 1989 or 1990. I do remember trying to get hold of The Exorcist but it was always rented out and I eventually watched it at the cinema in 1988, I do remember watching Susperia but I wasn't mad on it because of how bad the picture was but I watched it last year on Amazon plus I remember The Exterminator 1+2 were censored until I bought them on blu ray. Plus I was wondering how good is the 4k version of The Thing as the Arrow Video Blu-ray is very good and there are hours of bonus material with it.
Yeah I got the VHS of The Thing as soon as I could find one to buy! Must have watched it a thousand times 🤣🤣 we had a shop that used to rent out The Exorcist but the waiting list was massive 🤯😁 funnily enough The Exterminator was a sort of honoury section 3 as that disappeared out of the video shops as well 😱 The Thing 4k looks sensational!!! Great video John. I'm liking your Video Nasty series and the journey you are on with it. In some ways you are lucky to be old enough to have seen a lot of these on VHS and been mixed up in the whole situation as your insight really adds depth to what you are saying. If you are interested and don't know the full ins and outs. I did a video on my Double Bill Movies channel about how Absurd got its restoration and how Anthrophogous ended up getting remastered. You'd be welcome to some of the video if you wanted to include it in one of your videos or at least link to it. You are right that if you had said to your friends about some of those movies ending up in HD restored or even 4K would have made you a laughing stock. Great vid John. I'm a big F13 fan, great shot in part 2 when Ginny is in Jason's cabin and you can see him through the window, running down the hill towards the cabin. Part 6 is my favourite. Interesting fact about the newest TCM film - Leatherface, the boy who plays Leatherface was in Eastenders!

Hi John, The UK blu Ray of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre you own has the best PQ. I own it too in the steel book version. The 4k German disc has compression issues. Like you I am waiting for a proper 4k HDR release until I upgrade my blu Ray.

I sort of accidentally saw shogun Assassin at the cinema when i was 19 i think it was a double bill and i forget the main movie i went to see..i could have happily went home after it as it was more entertaining than the blockbuster itself :) what a treat that was !

I have the same box set you have couldn't resist it. I actually believe they messed up thinking it was a standard martial arts Jackie Chan type movie 🤣
Hello John, you should give the remake of Suspiria another chance, I've got both versions on 4k, and while I love the original the remake stands on its own as a separate film. Depending what mood I'm in its a toss-up between the two.

I remember in the late 80s a guy on a video market stall my father was talking too pulled out a printed piece of paper and said just owning this list was very risky, he showed me and it was a list of all the video nasties, crazy times. He also mentioned a John Wayne movie that was very rare and hard to get hold of, he said he would pay anything to get hold of it, im sure it was either The Conqueror because of all the controversy surrounding the filming of it or The Shootist as it was John Waynes last movie before he actually died of cancer.

I've heard The Thing transfer getting a fair amount of bashing, but I think it's one of those that's dependant on a quality setup. In Nightmare City, Lenzi states they are actually vampires, and apparently hates it when they're referred to as zombies. Great film, nonetheless, and would look good with a 4K upgrade.

Yeah of course I don't mind mate 👍👍got a pretty standard (but solid) set up at the moment, going to upgrade at the end of the year 🤞 TV is Sony Bravia 4k 48inch... looking to go Sony Bravia 55, Sony soundbar, Sony 4k player and Panasonic multiregion blu ray. Its a great looking set up but after having it for around 8 years.... its going to improved this year 🤩🤩👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Sounds pretty solid, and can't go wrong with Sony. I upgraded my 6 year old TV recently and bought a Panasonic UB820, and difference is night and day from my LCD and Xbox. You'll definitely see a solid improvement when upgrading.

If the information I have read online is correct, you should postpone any plans to buy a 4K copy of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre until it gets a quality release. There is currently a 4K copy available from Germany but it's very expensive and I've read the transfer is no better than the Blu-ray editions. If some reports are correct, it may actually be worse.
Yeah Rob, that's exactly right!! The German 4k doesn't have HDR on the disc so it takes it down in presentation straight away! Great packaging but it's not by anyway a definitive version! So holding out for a full proper restoration with all the help they can give the transfer is the only way 👍👍 cheers Rob mate 🤩🤩👍👍
Hello John, another great vid. I first saw both Nightmare City and Dawn of the Dead at Norham high school youth club! Mr Nelson who ran it would pop down to the local video shop in shields and grab a title he thought the kids would like. Along with those two we were treated to American werewolf and the Warriors. We were only 13 or 14, imagine that happening now! Pleased to hear someone else didn't like the new Suspiria too, pile of shite.

Hi mate, I watched Effects the other day...... hmmmm... well, the pluses are, amazing packaging! Great extras.... but I'm still processing the movie to see if it was good! By that I mean, it's a strange movie, it kind of breaks a few rules and I didn't really get what it was trying to say! I did drop off to sleep for a bit 🥴 but I find it a strange one to recommend 🤔 it's kind of ok but it's kind of odd!! Hmmm sorry that's a bit vague, but after watching the end and I thought, oh that's what it was about I'm going to give it another shot! Hope that kind of helps in a way 🤔🥴😁👍👍

But I don't think it has anything to do with the martial arts movie's Arrow put our a few years ago. There's 2 more coming out soon from 101 films in that range. Jungle Trap which could be good, I read about it and could be interesting. The other is a found footage horror movie. They claim it was officially the first found footage movie not cannibal holocaust
Yeah I've seen those other ones and to be honest they all look interesting and the Street Fighter title as a bonus movie on, and some of the other titles have bonus movies on, there are a lot more in the US under this range and I would like to check them all out, goy a felling they will all be ultra low budget and the prints looks bad..... but I kind of like that in a way! They feel like a throw back homage to old VHS 🤔 I think they could be an interesting bunch to collect!!! 🤔🤩🤩👍👍

This is the most interesting part of the video nasties list for me, cos you don't hear as much about these compared to the "official" 72 and there's a bunch of things here I'm surprised weren't banned. Zombie Lake... fucking hell. It makes more sense in the original French, oddly enough, cos the French dialogue is explicit about it being set in the mid-50s in a way I don't think the English dub is, but even so... and yet, for all its many faults, there are bits of it (like the wartime flashback) that I think are genuinely good. The original director was to be none other than Jess Franco but after writing the script he balked at how little Eurocine were giving him to then film it, proving that even Jess Franco had *some* standards. So Jean Rollin was just setting out to go on holiday when Eurocine called and asked him to do it instead, which he did, grudgingly, insisting he be credited under a pseudonym (even though he's credited as himself as an actor) and he only admitted he was to blame for it about 20 years later. But Rollin was good enough of a director that, in spite of anything, it was still not quite the debacle it should've been. You are *greatly* underselling the majesty of the ending of Nightmare City. I only know about Pigs from the Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide DVDs. I'd never heard of it before, and still haven't seen it, but it sounds quite remarkable. Shogun Assassin is quite something, from what I remember. The American distributor took unusual care with the dub so the script actually matched the actors' lip movements. I remember seeing it back in the 90s and being very surprised by that, having been subjected to some hideous Shaw Bros dubs. TCM... yeah, no. Never particularly liked it. I am willing to accept Kim Newman's theory that it's only really a good film if you see it at the cinema, but I've not done this and I'm not likely to for many reasons, so I don't suppose I'll ever find out for sure. It had always been such an iconic title and so loved that I suspect it was just massively overhyped for me by the first time I saw it circa 2003. The Thing is one I need to invest a blu copy of, cos I recently found my DVD of it was actually 4:3 non-anamorphic. Don't know how that happened. Suspiria... damn near unbeatable, isn't it? Even the shitty pan/scan VHS I first saw of it back in the 90s was astounding, and it just got better in digital form. Deep Red is another one I think I have to upgrade; I also saw first saw that in crappy p&s VHS and it's certainly greatly improved in the digital age when we can see it properly, though I still prefer Suspiria. Just uncle Dario has a new film coming out soon too. Buggered if I can understand why. And yes, I would also struggle to place Dawn of the Dead and Suspiria respective to each other. The theatrical edition was Romero's preferred version, I gather, rather than the longer "director's cut". The Argento version is... certainly different, I'll give it that.

Great choices....The Texas chainsaw massacre is available on 4k in Germany but as I'm aware no HDR on it.

I remember in the late 80s a guy on a video market stall my father was talking too pulled out a printed piece of paper and said just owning this list was very risky, he showed me and it was a list of all the video nasties, crazy times. He also mentioned a John Wayne movie that was very rare and hard to get hold of, he said he would pay anything to get hold of it, im sure it was either The Conqueror because of all the controversy surrounding the filming of it or The Shootist as it was John Waynes last movie before he actually died of cancer.

I've heard The Thing transfer getting a fair amount of bashing, but I think it's one of those that's dependant on a quality setup.
In Nightmare City, Lenzi states they are actually vampires, and apparently hates it when they're referred to as zombies. Great film, nonetheless, and would look good with a 4K upgrade.

Yeah of course I don't mind mate 👍👍got a pretty standard (but solid) set up at the moment, going to upgrade at the end of the year 🤞 TV is Sony Bravia 4k 48inch... looking to go Sony Bravia 55, Sony soundbar, Sony 4k player and Panasonic multiregion blu ray. Its a great looking set up but after having it for around 8 years.... its going to improved this year 🤩🤩👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Sounds pretty solid, and can't go wrong with Sony. I upgraded my 6 year old TV recently and bought a Panasonic UB820, and difference is night and day from my LCD and Xbox. You'll definitely see a solid improvement when upgrading.

If the information I have read online is correct, you should postpone any plans to buy a 4K copy of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre until it gets a quality release.
There is currently a 4K copy available from Germany but it's very expensive and I've read the transfer is no better than the Blu-ray editions. If some reports are correct, it may actually be worse.
Yeah Rob, that's exactly right!! The German 4k doesn't have HDR on the disc so it takes it down in presentation straight away! Great packaging but it's not by anyway a definitive version! So holding out for a full proper restoration with all the help they can give the transfer is the only way 👍👍 cheers Rob mate 🤩🤩👍👍
Hello John, another great vid. I first saw both Nightmare City and Dawn of the Dead at Norham high school youth club! Mr Nelson who ran it would pop down to the local video shop in shields and grab a title he thought the kids would like. Along with those two we were treated to American werewolf and the Warriors. We were only 13 or 14, imagine that happening now! Pleased to hear someone else didn't like the new Suspiria too, pile of shite.

Hi mate, I watched Effects the other day...... hmmmm... well, the pluses are, amazing packaging! Great extras.... but I'm still processing the movie to see if it was good! By that I mean, it's a strange movie, it kind of breaks a few rules and I didn't really get what it was trying to say! I did drop off to sleep for a bit 🥴 but I find it a strange one to recommend 🤔 it's kind of ok but it's kind of odd!! Hmmm sorry that's a bit vague, but after watching the end and I thought, oh that's what it was about I'm going to give it another shot! Hope that kind of helps in a way 🤔🥴😁👍👍

There's 2 more coming out soon from 101 films in that range. Jungle Trap which could be good, I read about it and could be interesting. The other is a found footage horror movie. They claim it was officially the first found footage movie not cannibal holocaust
Yeah I've seen those other ones and to be honest they all look interesting and the Street Fighter title as a bonus movie on, and some of the other titles have bonus movies on, there are a lot more in the US under this range and I would like to check them all out, goy a felling they will all be ultra low budget and the prints looks bad..... but I kind of like that in a way! They feel like a throw back homage to old VHS 🤔 I think they could be an interesting bunch to collect!!! 🤔🤩🤩👍👍

This is the most interesting part of the video nasties list for me, cos you don't hear as much about these compared to the "official" 72 and there's a bunch of things here I'm surprised weren't banned.
Zombie Lake... fucking hell. It makes more sense in the original French, oddly enough, cos the French dialogue is explicit about it being set in the mid-50s in a way I don't think the English dub is, but even so... and yet, for all its many faults, there are bits of it (like the wartime flashback) that I think are genuinely good. The original director was to be none other than Jess Franco but after writing the script he balked at how little Eurocine were giving him to then film it, proving that even Jess Franco had *some* standards. So Jean Rollin was just setting out to go on holiday when Eurocine called and asked him to do it instead, which he did, grudgingly, insisting he be credited under a pseudonym (even though he's credited as himself as an actor) and he only admitted he was to blame for it about 20 years later. But Rollin was good enough of a director that, in spite of anything, it was still not quite the debacle it should've been.
You are *greatly* underselling the majesty of the ending of Nightmare City.
I only know about Pigs from the Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide DVDs. I'd never heard of it before, and still haven't seen it, but it sounds quite remarkable.
Shogun Assassin is quite something, from what I remember. The American distributor took unusual care with the dub so the script actually matched the actors' lip movements. I remember seeing it back in the 90s and being very surprised by that, having been subjected to some hideous Shaw Bros dubs.
TCM... yeah, no. Never particularly liked it. I am willing to accept Kim Newman's theory that it's only really a good film if you see it at the cinema, but I've not done this and I'm not likely to for many reasons, so I don't suppose I'll ever find out for sure. It had always been such an iconic title and so loved that I suspect it was just massively overhyped for me by the first time I saw it circa 2003.
The Thing is one I need to invest a blu copy of, cos I recently found my DVD of it was actually 4:3 non-anamorphic. Don't know how that happened.
Suspiria... damn near unbeatable, isn't it? Even the shitty pan/scan VHS I first saw of it back in the 90s was astounding, and it just got better in digital form. Deep Red is another one I think I have to upgrade; I also saw first saw that in crappy p&s VHS and it's certainly greatly improved in the digital age when we can see it properly, though I still prefer Suspiria. Just uncle Dario has a new film coming out soon too. Buggered if I can understand why.
And yes, I would also struggle to place Dawn of the Dead and Suspiria respective to each other. The theatrical edition was Romero's preferred version, I gather, rather than the longer "director's cut". The Argento version is... certainly different, I'll give it that.
