    Carl, for the second tank you could handpick some baby Koi. Then watch them grow from Tosai to Nisai. And watch how coloration and patterns start to grow and develop on every individual. In the end you can keep your most perfect ones for the large pond.

  • @undermoss6394
    @undermoss6394 Год назад +437

    Carl, for the new tank you must *do the cold-water, high-flow river/stream tank with NATIVE UK FISH* like shoal of stream minnow, spined loach, and shoal of gudgeons. (Thats a whole episode with nets, undewater cameras and waiders) For aquatic plants use simple Vallisneria, it will look absolutely brilliant in the flow and is super low maintenance. No CO2, low light. The most expensive unit will be the chiller and larger turn-around filter + powerheads. Use natural gravel, I prefer it to come from the beach, you will get more varied sizes and that contributes to the natural look. Add large pebbles and rounded stones. Make sure you internalize recent aquascaping techniques by watching : "HOW TO BUILD THE PERFECT AQUASCAPE FOR CONTESTS - BY WORLD CHAMPION JOSH SIM"

    Hi Carl, I would think twice about the climbing plant above the pond, as it will increase your pond maintenance, with falling leaves and depending on what plant it is, it will turn your water pH levels up or down.

      Yes that's the thing - still considering this, and may not end up training the wisteria.

      @@fishwithcarl Hi Carl & Chris, I also have a koi pond in the back garden. Next to the pond we have fence with a climbing plant, only during the spring you can see a yellow glow at the water surface. Some individual koi also seem to be bothered by it... Luckily it is just for a small period of time, but this plant is next to the pond. Directly above the pond would increase the spores that reach your water surface.

    Stumbled upon your channel by accident and love how wholesome your family is, I’ve always known about koi but never appreciated their beauty until I watched your videos. Typically I enjoy fresh and saltwater fish. Now you have me planning a pond of my own in the not so distant future, I was wondering what are some things you wish you knew before hand? How expensive is a quality koi pond? What is the price range of various koi? (Is it cheaper to buy juvenile koi and grow them out yourself?) and lastly what is the general space rule for keeping koi (how many/ ____ gallon(litre) I thought these points would be good for an introductory to koi video that I may selfishly love to see what you have to say and may give you an excuse to get back out to Japan :) keep up the amazing work Carl!

    Maybe the fish don't care, but from a human perspective it seems sad that such big fish live in such an empty container with no plants or anything. if they were small fish that would be a giant home, but with their size, it's like living in your bathroom.

    • @fishwithcarl
      @fishwithcarl  Год назад

      The fish are actually perfectly ok :) Yes, haha it's hard to not imbue our human-ness on to certain things! A lot of carp live in quite barren waters (reservoirs/quarries) and do well, they are very adaptable creatures!

      Carp thrive in very barren waters in the wild without any weeds etc, some waters have very little in them aside form sand/ gravel i.e reservoirs and old quarries. As humans we can tend to imbue what we imagine onto creatures, but actually carp are absolutely fine. I give them sinking food to mimic them grubbing around behaviour :) Also, this pond is 17000L so five five large koi this is actually very understocked. I wanted to allow a good buffer to ensure the water quality remains excellent :) They are very well looked after and happy fish!

      Like my 12 yr old goldfish it loves eating algae. It was just an idea if the coy like it it’s fine. Also we just got some three spined stickle backs do u have any recommendations on the fish or have you never heard of them 😅 just wondering :)

      That’s fine :D. I want a coy pond but it’s cool to see your one. I’ve got my stickle backs in a bag waiting to regulate water temp. Also what’s a good way to start fishing or collecting fish cuz ur good at it and I kinda wanna do it too.

    For the new tank, local UK fish would be awesome to see. Would tie it into your fishing content, as well. Excited for whatever you end up going for!

    Don't add the plants up the pergola, been there, its a nightmare, put shade sails over the top

      Yes the plant debris issue, this is still something I'm contemplating.

    Kinda paradox that you did the cutting on the pond xD
    Imagine cutting into something but even more critical: I would have concerns that some little parts would fall into the water which then gets eaten by a koi.

    It would be nice for you to raise baby Koi inside until they get big enough to be put back in the backyard with the others or sold back once you have too much of them (turn over of fish)
    Love you video! Keep up the good work :)

    try a dry wall putty knife to scrap off the algae I use a razor blade to scrap the inside of my smaller tanks so on that scale thats the only thing I could think of that would be similar
