Carl, for the second tank you could handpick some baby Koi. Then watch them grow from Tosai to Nisai. And watch how coloration and patterns start to grow and develop on every individual. In the end you can keep your most perfect ones for the large pond.
Carl, for the new tank you must *do the cold-water, high-flow river/stream tank with NATIVE UK FISH* like shoal of stream minnow, spined loach, and shoal of gudgeons. (Thats a whole episode with nets, undewater cameras and waiders) For aquatic plants use simple Vallisneria, it will look absolutely brilliant in the flow and is super low maintenance. No CO2, low light. The most expensive unit will be the chiller and larger turn-around filter + powerheads. Make sure you internalize recent aquascaping techniques by watching : "HOW TO BUILD THE PERFECT AQUASCAPE FOR CONTESTS - BY WORLD CHAMPION JOSH SIM"
Hi Carl, I would think twice about the climbing plant above the pond, as it will increase your pond maintenance, with falling leaves and depending on what plant it is, it will turn your water pH levels up or down.
@@fishwithcarl Hi Carl & Chris, I also have a koi pond in the back garden. Next to the pond we have fence with a climbing plant, only during the spring you can see a yellow glow at the water surface. Some individual koi also seem to be bothered by it... Luckily it is just for a small period of time, but this plant is next to the pond. Directly above the pond would increase the spores that reach your water surface.
@@fishwithcarl you can mount a shade net right under the support beams with a climbing plant on top to catch falling leaves. a great plant is mucuna sp. which produces beautiful flower bunches.
A wonderful video, Carl. I love everything you do, but I have to admit your koi videos hold a special place in my heart. You take such good care of them, and they are so beautiful it just melts my heart. ❤️ And your garden is just stunning!
Stumbled upon your channel by accident and love how wholesome your family is, I’ve always known about koi but never appreciated their beauty until I watched your videos. Typically I enjoy fresh and saltwater fish. Now you have me planning a pond of my own in the not so distant future, I was wondering what are some things you wish you knew before hand? How expensive is a quality koi pond? What is the price range of various koi? (Is it cheaper to buy juvenile koi and grow them out yourself?) and lastly what is the general space rule for keeping koi (how many/ ____ gallon(litre) I thought these points would be good for an introductory to koi video that I may selfishly love to see what you have to say and may give you an excuse to get back out to Japan :) keep up the amazing work Carl!

You should put some rocks and plants in the pond hun. Ours are 35 years old,the oldest ones, and they like lots of oxygen, some rocks here and there, and yes it's necessary to keep their water very clean. Its necessary to spend some money for proper equipment. The pond is gorgeous and so are your fish. You're doing well
Car I absolutely love your back yard. My grandfather has a pond on his property that he had over 100 gold fish put in. About 20 years ago the neighboring brook flooded and wild speckled trout had got in. Long story short we now have gold fish with trout spots all over their sides and trout with long gold fish fins and a goldish color. Cheers
What a stunning load of fish and the garden looks brilliant! This video of yours Carl has cheered me up no end as ive been suffering with bad health atm and seeing your koi and goldfish so healthy and happy in your pond is a delight to see!

I think your fish must be very bored with nothing in the tank. I'd add some stuff for them to explore or hide in, maybe some live plants, or fake plants, and some big rock structures.
It's tempting for us humans to think this! Some waters that carp thrive in can be rather baron with minimal structure/snags. They are absolutely fine :)
Ahh, that's awesome, love a beast goldfish! Yeah we still have ours, it must about a kilo now! Hope we have him for many more years too :) cheers Criag, happy you enjoyed it.
Maybe the fish don't care, but from a human perspective it seems sad that such big fish live in such an empty container with no plants or anything. if they were small fish that would be a giant home, but with their size, it's like living in your bathroom.
The fish are actually perfectly ok :) Yes, haha it's hard to not imbue our human-ness on to certain things! A lot of carp live in quite barren waters (reservoirs/quarries) and do well, they are very adaptable creatures!
Carp thrive in very barren waters in the wild without any weeds etc, some waters have very little in them aside form sand/ gravel i.e reservoirs and old quarries. As humans we can tend to imbue what we imagine onto creatures, but actually carp are absolutely fine. I wanted to allow a good buffer to ensure the water quality remains excellent :) They are very well looked after and happy fish!
If you're not a fish keeper it's tempting to think this, but at 17,000 L for five fish it's actually very understocked! Each fish has more than enough space and water which is the way I prefer it - they're are absolutely fine :)

man, people take such good care of their fish and I'm sitting here watching my family's goldfish that's older than me become Alarmingly Lumpy. she doesn't seem too uncomfortable, she's just getting really old and so, so very lumpy. she's currently got a big lump in her gills and I have no clue what to do about it so I am... not doing anything lol
why don't you snag yourself an arowana, perhaps an alligator gar, or two? how about sturgeon? the sheen of tarpon is quite attractive... and i've also been curious about what it would be like to keep exocoetidae.
I believe that koi hibernate, so as long as they have high flow to prevent the surface from fully freezing and to keep introducing O2 to the water, koi don't need a heater. They are pretty much water bears lol.
