Just changed to 75-140 gear oil in my g56. Noticed the stiff shifting right away when cold. After it warms up I find it about the same as atf will see how it is during the winter I was also debating over the synchromesh oil. Another great video as alway.
So I switched back today, I had Mobil 50 in mine for almost 2 years. First was hard to get, reverse, was notchy along with 2nd and 5th. I bought the truck 2 years ago with something that wasn’t atf in it. But now if shift better than ever. Thanks man
Amsoil 75-90 MTG synthetic is smooth effortless shifting even in winter in San Diego at 35-40* in winter. A member here from Ontario, Canada recommended it. I've used it for 70K now.
I’m in the same boat bud. I tried diamond g56 oil from hotshot secret. Great oil. But hard to shift gold. I’m going back ASAP. Maybe royal purple or something. Up here in Oregon
thanks man been scratching my head too. up here in Canada gets down to -40 and I was wondering about the 50 weight myself. going to continue with atf+4 thx
Do a power steering flush and cap mod as well! Look it up on the forums, it saved me about 800 bucks and only costed me the fluid. Have a little extra when doing so just incase.
My Amsoil 75-90 MTG's equipped goes through all gears cold. San Diego does have under 40f* mornings. Formerly I used Delvac 50 wt and hated it. Also my trans will wake the dead with ATF. I used it for 37K and went with the SBC single disk conversion. One post on here had a guy using Amsoil Manual trans fluid. Gorilla Juice was horrendous. I drained it at 45 miles.
270k with 50 wt. bought truck new. Just switched to ATF +4 when dealer changed oil and the trans locked up doing 80mph in 6th. Bearings were blue nain shaft shot. Mercedes trans and they say 50 weight. And not to use ATF+4. ATF+4 is giving the G56 a bad rap in the rams.
Oh my. I ended up switching back to 50 wt as I upgraded to a solid mass flywheel setup recently. I tried hotshots 50 wt this time and it’s not as stiff shifting as what I had before.
I am using penzoil Synchromesh fluid and have had it in for about 100k. Def needs changing but still running good even with the old fluid. Gonna go with amsoil synchro next
Cant remember the weight but swapped to full syn gear oil about 3 years back added the xtra from the top and only takes an xtra moment to get into 1st or reverse but never a problem shifting up and runs smooth as glass in central Alberta were old man winter has been known make lasting appearances lol, thought that Mercedes rolls with gear oil instead of atf, so far so good cheers
I use ATF+4 and the only problem I've had is when it's cold(also live on N Gulf coast so not THAT cold) it's a little stiff going in reverse. Besides that I'm good. The only time I ever use 1st/Low is if I'm pulling a big boat out of the water, otherwise I always start in 2nd. See no reason to use anything other than ATF +4
Great video..when you need a clutch would you stay with the dual mass flywheel? or switch to solid flywheel? I have a 07 5.9 G56 with a SB single disk great clutch but i'm tired of gear rollover. Nothing like the smoothness of a dual mass flywheel on stock applications.
Its a tough debate. I was thinking about going single mass with single disk so I could run one setting higher on the tunes. Im ok with my current setup though
A stock clutch will kill the gear rollover and will handle 30-40hp power increase. Mine was like new at 37K carrying a 2200# camper around 24/7 and 285's. I swapped it out when my rear main started weeping.
I have problems going into 3rd it has a chunk sound in fact all gears do I have to drive 10-15 miles to get them to shift ok with the Valvoline synchromesh thinking about going back to atf
I switched back to SAE50 but this time I’m running hotshots. It has some of the stiffness issues in cold weather still but not as bad. I switched in anticipation of doing a clutch upgrade soon.

Amsoil 75-90 MTG is much thinner and better shifting. Zero idling or depressed clutch noise eveen in 35* weather. I have SBC's OKHD-G56 clutch.

ive been running royal purple 75-w90 for about 10 months and the truck likes it shifts way smoother

@@OutpostCTD I have to say my SB single disk holds awesome but you have to get the clutch out & get the rpms up a bit.

yeah, the mopar atf-4 is the way to go imo too.

Are you still running the atf 4

Did you try overfilling it with the ATF? see if it quieted it down?
Haven't tried that. It may help some.
