  • 📜 Warring States Japan: Sengoku Jidai - Part 6 - Extra History
After Toyotomi Hideyoshi passes from old age, control of Japan passes to his young son - or more accurately, to his council of advisors. Tokugawa Ieyasu, the most powerful among them, looks poised to seize power for himself, but a rival named Ishida Mitsunari plots against him. After his first treacherous plot is discovered and foiled, Ishida joins with Uesugi Kagekatsu to mount a campaign against Tokugawa. An old friend, Torii Mototada, gives his life to counter the campaign and buys Tokugawa enough time to defend himself. The defection of the Kobayakawa clan from Ishida broke this opposition once and for all, leaving Tokugawa in uncontested control of Japan. Though he became shogun, Tokugawa ruled for only two years before passing succession to his son, establishing for the first time not only a stable shogun but a stable chain of succession, and bringing Sengoku Jidai period to an end in Japan.

it's written as 'Retiring early" but read as "Establishing a dynasty"
and that dynasty, the Tokugawa Shogunate, continued to rule for more than 200 years, until a dude from US came with huge boats. With guns. Gunboats.

Joel Andersson It's already kind of been done. The James Clavell book Shogun is about this time period and was made into a TV miniseries in the 70s. The story is centred on an English navigator named John Blackthorne who winds up shipwrecked in Japan and becomes pretty important in Tokugawa's court. The book is pretty good and the show is middling, seems kind of dated nowadays. As always though, reality is more interesting than fiction and John Blackthorne is based on a real Englishman named William Adams who actually became a western samurai and did all kinds of cool shit. A festival is held in the city of Ito every year in his honor to this day.

Just goes to show the differing values and levels of restraint between the two men. Tokugawa had a more clear vision of the future and was less arrogant than Suleiman. He knew when he'd done all he could and took no more. So he ended up living out his days peacefully and happily. Suleiman refused to settle and in his pride he ostracized himself from everyone that he held dear, killing many of them himself. So he died alone with his ambitions left unfulfilled

Also, another interesting little piece of info, Kanentsuho, the currency of Japan wayyyy back, (about 300 years) can be found at beaches near Enoshima by metal detecting on the sand. I have found at least 15 of these old coins in a short period of time.

I feel like this depiction of the Sengoku Jidai left out a lot of crucial elements, because if Shogun were to be true, then the Tokugawa clan were nowhere as powerful as EC claims them to be, neither is the Ishida forces as powerful as the EC claims to be.

I suppose Ieyasu did want to push that so early in their rule though. So it was better to make it look like Toyotomi was an asshole.

    It is a digression.
The Shimazu clan and The Mori clan of Mitsunari Ishida of the Toyotomi forces were defeated in battle of Sekigahara.
However, the Shimazu clan was allied with the Mori clan and, about 250 years later, defeated Tokugawa shogunate government.
They continued bearing a grudge against the Tokugawa clan for about 250 years.
And the Meiji Restoration happened, and, in the Japanese new government, the Shimazu clan and the Mori clan played a key role.

The Mori was said to be the leader of the Western army in name. The Kobayakawa, which was a clearly recorded traitor to the Western army, was Mori's branch because of Takakage Kobayakawa being a Mori himself (Kikkawa was also a Mori branch due to Motoharu Kikkawa being a Mori himself). However, Takakage picked Kingo/Hideaki to be Kobayakawa heir due to... some complicated things.

It's absolutely wild being able to picture this from my own experiences - a morning in Sekigahara, overlooking the river, a tour guide pointing out where the troops would have been and squinting to see through the fog. I've been to these places, I KNOW these battles, but your series makes it come alive in a way that even being there didn't.

Yay, I'm glad they mentioned the siege of Osaka at the end, sadly and understandably that means leaving out the Sanada. But they are kind of a footnote anyway but I do love how if you ever go to Osaka castle and look at the museum for the opposing forces in the siege it goes:
Attacking: Nearly every daimyo in Japan even the Date who are on the other side of the country.
Defending: Sanada Yukimura (Sanada Nobushige) and some second bananas.

i dont think sanada yukimura were that mightiest, at siege of osaka he shown as great tactical commander when he build sanada-maru fortification. the mighty warrior in that siege was goto matabei who got killed after he himself killed some 80 men while protecting his reatreating allies.

He also served under Kato Kiyomasa and Shimazu Yoshihiro in Korea and he was told that he was the Number 1 warrior in Japan . During the sieges of Osaka he was the Supreme Commander of the Toyotomi Garrison and even Goto told that Nobuhige should be the leader of toyotomi forces before the surrender of the winter siege. Sanada Yukimura (Nobushige) did not participate in the Imjin war personally. He was an overall unknown figure who spent most of his life as a hostage of his family. He, along with his father, brother, and most of the Eastern daimyos were stationed in Nagoya alongside Hideyoshi. Imjin war mostly fought by Western daimyos.
yukimura never serve kato or shimazu. the only battles yukimura participated are first and second siege of ueda and osaka campaign.
The "number one warrior in Japan" many people have referenced to in the context of the siege of Osaka, not the imjin war.
also, its been widely accepted that there are 2 mightiest samurai in that period. in the east is Honda Tadakatsu, in the west is Tachibana Muneshige.

    • @DStrormer
      @DStrormer 9 лет назад +18

It can get pretty chaotic pretty quickly, and they only really discussed the important players in the storyline. There are dozens of minor lords and dignitaries, vassals and courtiers, that played some minor role somewhere in the events. That's probably the reason why they keep making those Sengoku Musou games. I mean, that and becuase Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi HIdeyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu are terrifyingly brilliant and brutal figures from true history, which is always fun.

The style of video is incredibly fast-paced, and even for me (having studied the modern Japanese language and some of its history), keeping track of all the names was difficult; but they very well anticipated that and used visual cues to alleviate those problems.

Did they quietly accept Tokugawa supremacy? Did they simply collapse with Nobunaga's death? I just don't understand how the clan of the first great unifier could just disappear.
