Chiming in here. I am 51, got my license at 31, and have never once had to pump my own gas. I lived in Jersey until a few years ago when we moved to another state; I always had my husband get gas for me, because I swore I would never pump my own gas. he is out of town and I was near empty and panicking. I came across your video and felt so much better. I got to the gas station and someone was parked at the pump for about 20 minutes. It was obvious they had long been finished getting gas, but wanted to get breakfast , so I was waiting and waiting which made my anxiety even worse. It took me a little minute to figure out the little latch on the pump. I could hear that the gas was going in, so I know I was good to go. I was finished and wrestled with the pump to get it back on its thingy. I was so excited and got back into the car when I heard a little beep. I thought maybe I had been taking too long and someone had to be somewhere. But then I realized I forgot to put the cap back on and close the little door to my gas tank. It was a good Samaritan letting me know this, and he gave me a wave and a chuckle, and all was well with the world. It feels good to come here and say that I did it. I really don’t think anyone else could understand how good it feels to overcome a hurdle like this, which comes easy to most. thank you so much for this video, I really appreciate it!

What if I don't want to fill up whole tank? How can I select specific amount of gallon or money for gas to be filled ? All gas stations have that automatic shut off nozel? In case if there is not automatic shut off, how can we decide when to shut off nozel to avoid spilling?
If you want to fill it to a specific amount, say $10, don't lock the lever in place and just squeeze the handle until you hit $10 and then let it go and it will stop. All gas stations have automatic shut off, so when your tank is full, it automatically stops pumping. In all of the years I have pumped gas all over the country, I have never had one that didn't shut off.

I got scared using one of these for the first time, is it normal that you put your card and pin in BEFORE you start putting gas in your vehicle, and after you have filled up your vehicle you dont have to put your card back into the machine a second time?
Yes, you always put your card in first and then you pump the gas, and when you're done, the total is automatically deducted from your card. You don't need to put your card in a second time.
@@howdoi1851 So do you in the US not find it potentially hazardous leaving the fuel running? I guess the logic with our UK system is that you’re always ready to let go of the handle in the event of an incident such as an overflow or other accident…
You never use your phone while putting gas on your car, is not safe bc of the static electricity, same thing as getting in and out the car while filling your cars tank, static can ignite a sparkle,
I never pay at the pump with debit anymore, always have cash in hand for that. Not because of fraud or card skimmers even though it's a possibility, it's because of the up to $100 hold they put on your account which can be for several days. I learned this lesson the hard way when I took a long road trip( long in miles but short in days). I had about $500 in my checking account and filled up using my debit card 4 times for about $35 each time. Spent around $100 on food. So I went to make another small purchase and was surprised that my card was declined. Instead of the $140 I thought I spent on gas, $400 was held from my account. Of course it was credited later, but I didn't have the money I thought I had when I needed it. Now on road trips I make a point to buy my food at a supermarket and get cash back which I use to pay for gas.
some cars show how many miles you can drive for with the gas on the dashboard, for example (50 miles), if not the E means empty and F means full, just have the pointer towards the F so your gas is filled and not towards the E which means your gas is empty or about to be.
You can also look up the make and model of your vehicle and it will tell you how many gallons it holds. But you don't really need to worry about how much it will hold because the pump will shut off when it's full.
This is the best and funniest pay at the pump tutorial that i have seen on RUclips, your so funny, if you were a real comedian I'm sure you would go far, best wishes from Nova Scotia.
Thank you!!! Wow you really brightened up my day! My parents spent a month traveling Nova Scotia and my dad said it was one of the most beautiful places he has been. He could not stop talking about the Bay of Fundy :)
Sometimes the recommended fuel grade is stated on a label in the cap/fill area of the vehicle. If not, the information is contained in the owner's manual that's in the glove box, or if the manual is missing, most manuals can be found online for most vehicles. It will state the recommended fuel grade (87 in most vehicles in the USA, with exceptions, as noted in the owner's manual). I pump my own gas no matter what, no matter what state. I had an attendant in NJ spill gas on my then-new convertible, so I took the squeegee and cleaned it off (I had just waxed the car and I still own it to this day and it's still in nice shape). After an argument, he saw my side, and then after that, he would let me pump my own gas and just give me the wave when I pulled in. I told him. "Now you don't have to come out here in the heat of summer or cold of winter". He laughed and said, "My friend, I'm from Egypt originally. I know what hot is. LOL". I also do all my own car work, so no need to check anything. LOL. Technically, you shouldn't be using a cell phone near a pump. It's a better time to check things like your washer fluid, clean the windshield and windows, and with sufficient cool-down time, the tire pressure and oil level (assuming that you didn't do that at home when you wash the car or service the car, as I often do). Also, if you're paying cash, typically, you'll have to give the money to the attendant inside and they set the pump so it will not exceed the amount you give them. You say, "Let me get $20 on pump # (whatever number pump it is that you're at)." Also, if the pump retention lever is broken/inoperative, you can usually wedge the cap into that area to keep the pump running. I normally just manually hold it. Sometimes, due to the angle of the pump, you may have to play with the angle of how the pump nozzle is inserted into the filler neck because it can give a false sense to the pump that the tank is full and shut it off prematurely. Some vehicles have a retention strap so the cap can't be lost. If not, hold the cap in your hand or put it on the holder on the fuel door (if the vehicle has one) so you don't forget to put it back. Leaving the cap off can set the "Check Engine" light. One final thing I do is scan my receipts on an app like Fetch (there are others). After a time, you earn some points for gift cards to the major retailers out there. It doesn't cost the consumer anything and since you're buying the items (gas, groceries, other goods), you might as well take advantage of it. You also want to go to a station to does a lot of volume as there is less of a chance that you can get bad fuel as the product is moving. Also, avoid getting fuel when the tanker truck is in the station refilling the tanks.
Nice video, it was really helpful. I was trying to put gas to a car someone lend me, I was almost running out of gas and I didn't know how to do it. XD
This actually helped a lot I'm a new driver and from Oregon and over here we dont pump our own gas. Just incase I leave state or something I'll know thanks :)
@@ethanreedy9785 well over here we just pull up to a gas station and just wait for someone they ask us how much we want and what type of gas and they just do it it's kinda odd but yea
Glad we could help you out. I remember the first time I stopped for gas when driving through Oregon. I was so confused when the attendant told me I couldn't pump my own gas. But it was great! I wish they had that here so I could stay in my car out of the heat and the cold :)
Very informative with a healthy amount of wit thrown in to entertain the viewer! People in Oregon and New Jersey take note! However, I am not sure it is wise to use a cell phone right next to a pump while waiting for the tank to fill. I have heard something about it being possibly dangerous? Maybe an old wives tale. (Maybe creating some type of static electricity?) Thoughts from other commenters are more than welcome!
Thank you Timo! There have been tales going around for years about the dangers of using cell phones at gas pumps, but in looking into it, most experts seem to say that it's not true. Here's an article by Sinclair Oil calling it an urban legend: www.sinclairoil.com/news/news/can-you-use-your-cell-phone-pump
Thank you for your kind words! To tell you the truth, I think you might have missed your true calling. You really should do stand up comedy. LOVED the hands in the "Dateline" position! Good luck to you in future videos!
@@user-ck4fm7os1w ok but what if the price is something you can’t afford , it’s best to go inside the store right and tell them how much you wanna pay.
@@rayneshawilliams2262 you can stop it at whatever price you want and it'll charge you for that amount. You don't have to let it fill all the way if you don't want to pay for that.
Wait you only have 1 nozzle for all fuels? Isnt that cross contamination between diesal and petrol/gasoline in the UK we have a different nozzle for each fuel type
There is a separate nozzle for diesel on the left side of the pump that I didn't show. Our diesel nozzles are usually green so you know which one is which. I wish I would have shown that but I didn't even think of it!
@@howdoi1851 thats ok, thats strange as Diesel here in the UK has a black nozzle and Gasoline/Petrol is Green. One thing i have wondered is if you dont have pay at the pump and have to go in and pay before getting the fuel, if you just want to fill it up but you dont know how much its going to cost, how do you pay for that before hand not knowing how much it will cost? Hope that makes sense and you can answer, sorry for all the questions,
@@ulysees321 no apologies necessary! I appreciate the questions. Usually you know about how much it costs to fill your tank. If you're paying cash, you would give them enough to cover the cost. Once you pump the gas, the clerk will give you change if the total was less than the amount of cash you gave them.
As soon as the pump is put back in to its original position the purchase is made I guess? I always wondered if you forget to print receipt someone could hop on your card.
When you prepay and give the cashier cash, they set the pump to shut off at the amount you have paid. So if you say, "I'd like $10 on pump 3," the cashier will take your money and then set the pump to shut off when it hits $10. You just pump your gas and it should automatically shut off at $10. And when it shuts off, you're done. You don't need to go back into the store or anything.
If you're trying to stop at a certain amount, don't lock the nozzle open and when it starts getting close to $15 ease up on the handle. Let go of it when it gets to $15. Or, you can go inside the gas station and tell them you want $15 on pump # (whatever pump you're on) and give them the $15 and it will stop automatically for you.
@@howdoi1851 what if let’s say i pay 70 $ for a full tank and i pay the cash at register but what if the car fills up with 50 is it still going to have gas come out and spill or does it stop and i get my money back or it stops and i don’t get my money back
@@ulielp4288 The pump will stop when your tank is full. It has a sensor in the nozzle that knows when the fuel is at the top of your tank and it shuts off. Then you go back into the gas station and get your change.
Yes, you go back into the station and let them know what pump you were on and they will give you your change. They have a monitor that shows them how much gas you pumped.
Yup! You can go in and ask for a receipt. Look for the pump number before going in, the cashier will need that to know which pump to print a receipt for. Happens pretty often.
another thing to remember try not to run your vehicle near empty , most of the vehicles these days have the fuel pump inside the tank > the fuel keeps the pump cool
Its helpful for an Indian like me who is in USA for short term. Gas station in India is called petrol bunk and there will be a person who fills tank when you park vehicle besides pump. Thanks.
Probably because it only took $15 to fill your tank. If you say you want to put $20 on a certain pump, once your tank is full the pump will shut off and you have to go in and get your change.
It is safer to use tap to pay versus inserting your card.

Thank you for this info! It's very helpful!
😂 😂 I wheezed when you said emoji xD. 😂 😂 😂 😂. Animation I guess 🤣
Ha so glad we made you laugh! I don't know how to add emojis to these comments so heart heart heart laughing crying face
Nice video, it was really helpful. I was trying to put gas to a car someone lend me, I was almost running out of gas and I didn't know how to do it. XD
Hi Emmanuel! Happy to help :)
I loved your comment about how to hold your hands at the end of the video, great.
thank you 😂😂😂
I liked the way that how you were teaching in the fantastic way, I laughed as well, please keep it up
Thank you so much! It makes me happy to hear that we made you laugh :)
Thanks for this video, your mom is very cool. She reminds me of my mom RIP.
Thank you, Orlando. So sorry for your loss.
This actually helped a lot I'm a new driver and from Oregon and over here we dont pump our own gas. Just incase I leave state or something I'll know thanks :)
Got Any Memes wait you don’t pump your own gas over there? How does it work over there?
@@ethanreedy9785 well over here we just pull up to a gas station and just wait for someone they ask us how much we want and what type of gas and they just do it it's kinda odd but yea
Glad we could help you out. I remember the first time I stopped for gas when driving through Oregon. I was so confused when the attendant told me I couldn't pump my own gas. But it was great! I wish they had that here so I could stay in my car out of the heat and the cold :)
New Jersey has full service stations only. - ONLY attendants pump gas - customer stays in car during the transaction
So when the pump gas money get higher did they asked for the money payment
Thanks for the article. I read it. Just wanted to make sure everyone is safe out there. Again, great video!
@@timomarx7690 It's great that you want to make sure we are all safe. We need more people like you in this world Timo!
Thank you for your kind words! To tell you the truth, I think you might have missed your true calling. You really should do stand up comedy. LOVED the hands in the "Dateline" position! Good luck to you in future videos!
@@timomarx7690 You just made 2020 a whole lot brighter. So glad you liked the Dateline hands LOL. Good luck to you in whatever you are doing too!
Is there any compulsory education about self-service refuelling?
Surprisingly, no. We usually learn from a parent or a friend, or try to figure it out for ourselves.
I absolutely loved this video! This woman is absolutely hilarious!🤣🤣
Awww thank you! Appreciate you taking the time to start my year off with love!!!
Very helpful and very entertaining lol
Jorge! Thank your for your comment :)
I honestly thought your gas tank was completely empty, lol. Nice, entertaining video😀
Thank you Lex!
Am I the only one who is bothered it stopped at 15.99?? Haha
Ha I should have spent another penny for you
Cheryleen Tohtsoni so does that mean you have to pay the price where ever it stops at? You can’t pick how much you want to pay?
@@rayneshawilliams2262 why do you want to pay extra when there's already a price for you :)
Once you hang up the pump it closes the transaction so nobody could use your card
Your mom is so funny and wholesome 😆
I am screenshotting your comment and sending it to my daughter so she sees how cool I am :)
What do you do if you prepay with cash but go over the amount?
When you prepay and give the cashier cash, they set the pump to shut off at the amount you have paid. So if you say, "I'd like $10 on pump 3," the cashier will take your money and then set the pump to shut off when it hits $10. You just pump your gas and it should automatically shut off at $10. And when it shuts off, you're done. You don't need to go back into the store or anything.
Thanks for sharing this nice video....it was very helpful for me as a new driver 👍
You are welcome Ahlam. Thanks for taking the time to leave us this nice comment :)
I live in Canada but this was helpful thanks!
Glad to help!
This video was helpful thank you and pretty soon I will be driving so I need it this video 😊
So excited to hear you'll be driving soon! Keep me posted. I'd love to hear about your adventures :)
OMG!!!! Ya gotta love Kim!
You make me so happy
when i first started driving i pumped has normally but out of no where i started pumping gas incorrectly!! it always shuts off on me after 3 seconds.
I've run into the same problem at certain gas pumps. I'm not sure exactly what causes this!
My favorite video. Im learning and thank you so much👌❤
So happy that you are here!
Im 14, and im watching this that way i can know how to pump the gas when im 16😂 Thank you❤
Good for you for preparing early!!!
You are very entertaining 😃 thanks for the fun lesson.
I appreciate you taking the time to comment Henry! Thanks for the kind words :)
You made my day mom.😆
Thank you Vishnu!
She is hilarious and this video is so helpful
Rachelle you just made my day. Thank you for taking the time to comment :)
thanks for the video! i wanna learn how to do this stuff when i get my own car
It's good that you're starting now so that by the time you get your car you'll know so much!
So let’s say you o my have $15!so when it’s going to hit that amount how do you stop the gas? Do you just take it out or do you push a button?
Then you go back into the gas station and get your change.
what happens if i pay $20 and the tank is full at $12? do i get money back?
Yes, you go back into the station and let them know what pump you were on and they will give you your change. They have a monitor that shows them how much gas you pumped.
What happens if the paper had run out & you don't get a receipt? Does the cashier print one out?
Yup! You can go in and ask for a receipt. Look for the pump number before going in, the cashier will need that to know which pump to print a receipt for. Happens pretty often.
@@fuzzygenius Thank you!
@@fuzzygenius thanks for this info!
What a fun mom!
Thank you Cecy!!!!
how to you enter how much money you wanna put in
Great video for people in New Jersey.
Wow I just learned that you can't pump your own gas in NJ! I thought Oregon was the only state...
This is very informative. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Liza!
another thing to remember try not to run your vehicle near empty , most of the vehicles these days have the fuel pump inside the tank > the fuel keeps the pump cool
Great point! Thanks for bringing that up
It's a good idea to fill your gas tank when you have one fourth left😆
Haha you're such a lovely person. Bless you and your family
Wow thank you! That's very nice to hear!
Nice tutorial. I also make one video about that the other day.. good to know how to do that.
Just watched your video! I'm glad to know that we are both helping people learn how to do this. It can seem scary when you do it the first time.
Is term gallon only used in USA?
I looked it up and it looks like it's used in the US and some south American countries
Good vid this helped me
We love to hear that!
Its helpful for an Indian like me who is in USA for short term. Gas station in India is called petrol bunk and there will be a person who fills tank when you park vehicle besides pump. Thanks.
You are welcome Praveen. I'm so glad we could help. And thank you for the information on how fueling works in your country!
This was very instructive and very fun as well. ☺
Thank you!!!
Thanks so much,I am a new driver and this video was helpful
Yay! Congrats on getting your license. Glad we could help you on your journey :)
I thought if u pay $20 for gas the number up there or the gas should stop at 20. Something ???? Why it stop at $15
Probably because it only took $15 to fill your tank. If you say you want to put $20 on a certain pump, once your tank is full the pump will shut off and you have to go in and get your change.
This will definitely help the one’s who just got off the boat.
This is a big help for me im a newly driver and wondering how to fill up my car lmao 😂 thankyou
