Identity theft and credit fraud "Should" be ten year minimum sentence.
Thanks for your comment.
I believe we should take these useless individuals, out to the middle of Death Valley, and leave them there! If they manage to walk to safety - they live.
I went to gas store on holiday weekend and had a gas attendant in store waited for me to look away took my card obviously slid it in took it out then asked me to enter my pin and I did. After leaving I thought I never put my card in so next AM and went to my bank changed my pin. If you suspect anything call your bank or go in change pin immediately. I caught my fraud before they could use a duplicate they made due to that holiday. World full of evil!!!
Great advice, thank you!
The way I handle this is having all my credit cards maxed out.
Haha, I love it...
In my area of the country (and may be all) there is a state certification sticker that is placed over the card reader to prevent scammers from installing their "own" card reader. If you ever see that certification sticker broken there is a good chance that the gas pump has been tampered with. Report it to the owners and find another pump.
Thanks for your comment.
Here in Austin, it seems you can't find a station without all or most of the pumps with tampered labels. You have to report it to the Dept. of Agriculture (which regulates and monitors meters and scales here in Texas) because more often than not, the store clerk or manager could care less.
Another thing everyone should DEFINITELY do is this. I have set up for my cards that ANY AND EVERY purchase that is made on that account will send me a text message. It sounds annoying, but it's not really and it's well worth it. At most places, when a purchase is made, it will instantly text me WITHIN SECONDS, that I have a purchase pending, and then it will text me when it's "posted" or as I assume that to mean, confirmed, probably by the bank I'm guessing. I also have text messages set up for nearly everything else that happens with my account. I use 2FA for my login info, I get texts for a deposit, for a balance under a certain amount, so on. I avoid using the online banking stuff but this is for security and it's worth it. Now, there isn't an intended option for this, but I decided to use the "text me for purchases over (this amount)" and set the amount to $0.01 for whatever I wanted, so if you want this you may have to use this method.
Do not use your credit card at the gas pump. Cash only at the counter.
Most of us are too lazy for that, I like the convenience of paying at the pump. Thanks for watching.
no its okay to use your credit card because fraud most of the time is insured, its debit that you dont want to ever use
Happened to me ! Was out of town and put my card in the pump and the screen went blank... went to another pump and went inside to pay and tell them - he said no it's working fine... I said but it's not, you should go check it ? He shrugged ! I said at least put an out of order sign on it ... he repeated and shrugged * it's working . I got my gas and got on the freeway but my gut said this is not right ----- so I pulled off the next exit and called my bank and canceled my card ! So glad I did !! Go with your gut :)
Thanks for sharing that experience, very helpful. Hope you can share this video with your friends and family. :)
Obviously he’s in on the scam.
A quick way to keep track of credit card usage is to have all credit card purchases come to your phone immediately after they are charged. That’s what I do.
Good idea, thank you.
There is another scam at gas stations. After you've pumped gas, the guy next to you asks to use your pump, Always return the pump to its holder after use , else he can pump gas and it will go on Your account. The charge for your gas stays open, until you hang up the pump.
I hit the clear button after returning the nozzle. Thanks for the comment.
Me too, about also hitting the Clear button after hanging up the pump!
1. Set your CC “alerts” for EVERY PURCHASE over $1. Email or text. You will know within minutes if fraudulent charges are occurring!
2. Keep a spreadsheet on your ipad, etc for all purchases….takes time but well invested !
This is a different approach--whatever it takes to be safe. Thanks for watching.
Have mine set at 5 bucks. And never use a debit card except at the bank and no need to watch worthless videos.
This is what I do. But I set the limit at $1. The thieves will charge $1 to test the card. I get a text notification within, typically, 2 seconds of the charge going through. When I'm at the cash register, my phone will ping before I even get my receipt.
This is why it's important to use cash as much as possible.
Ok. Thanks for watching.
And lock your cards when not using it and check your bank by accounts every day you’ll be shocked how much stress I’ve saved this way too.
One more way to protect yourself is not to pay at the pump, instead pay inside the store. This removes most risk but is inconvenient especially during peak business times. I’m going to plan my gas purchases at off peak hours from now on making it easier to pay in store without waiting in a long line.
nope that's not guaranteed, my card got skimmed in the station,
Wow Adrian I’m sorry to hear that. Maybe the best way from now on is for me to be sure to have cash on me instead of any card, Cash ? What’s that ! Ha !
Thanks for your comment.
@@AdrianJayeOnlineSame with my sister. I always pay at the pump after first pulling on the card reader and looking for the security sticker. My sister has been scammed 2 or 3 times paying inside out in New Mexico.
I wonder if bypassing your PIN also helps?
Always always always use a credit card instead of your debit card.. so many people don't understand this safeguards you get when you have a credit card
Agree, thank for watching.
Another thing worth mentioning is creating alerts with your card issuer. I get an email alert if my card is used for a value of 0.01 or more.
Yes, I do that. Please share this video with your friends.
Simple solution. Set up notification for any charge over $1.00, so you instantly get a text immediately for any charge over a dollar. Better to delete emails of every authorized charge, than to wait until you see charges.
Thanks for the comment and for watching.
If possible pay with cash, check everything on the gas pumps.
Haha, I rarely carry cash. Thanks for the comment.
Another way: use a secondary VISA/debit with limit of $500 max purchase for internet/restaurant or gas pumps.
Just be careful of using a Debit Card, thanks for watching.
Terry we use our AmEx for that. It has caught a few things already and protects us as well.
Debit cards have been a no no for at least a decade. Only use your debit card for ATM cash withdrawals.
@@Christian-cw9mphey sir, can you please explain further why debit card is not preferred. I will work soon and I want to make a debit card. Any advice I appreciate it. Thank you. 😊
@사랑해요 it is an issue with theft. They will reimburse you eventually, but you have to deal with all of the NSF fees if you have written checks, have ABP payments in progress or scheduled, or have gone on websites and made payments. If your mortgage/rent is due, and your money is gone, you can't make your payment which could result in late fees and eviction proceedings. The headaches from trying to convince the banks of NSF's due to fraud. It is just a nightmare when attached to your checking account. With a credit card, your checking account isn't affected. I hope that helps. Have an amazing weekend!
Happened to me with a debit card. Someone bought $400.00 worth of Chick-fil-a chicken in Louisiana and Florida. Got my money back, and chick-fil-a left the reward points on my account.
Hard way to earn points :) Appreciate your comment and thanks for watching.
This just happened to me. I lost $4,500. Lesson learned. I will use cash at gas stations as much as possible. I will not use pin numbers as much as possible.
Hope you got the loss back. Please share this video with your friends and family.
I walk in pay cash every time except Costco. Carry $100 at all times
That one solution, thanks for your input.
Doesn't Costco have Gift Cards for gas pumps? If not? They stupid
I USED TO USE A DEBIT CARD AT THE PUMPS, BUT DISCONTINUED QUITE A WHILE AGO. THANKS FOR THE HINT. DURING THE MONTH I CHARGE EVERYTHING FOR MY LIVING EXPENSES , AND THEN THE FOLLOWING MONTH I PAY IT OUT IN FULL. IT TELLS ME HOW MUCH MY LKIVING EXPENSES HAVE BEEN DURING THE MONTH.
Sounds like a good plan. Thank you for watching and please share this video with your friends.
Old banker here.. great advice. Also set up alerts at your account to send you text messages for charges over x dollars,
Thank you for the comment and tips.
Don’t feel bad because I use to be a Fuel Tanker Driver in Los Angeles and I was delivering fuel to a station and went to get a read out from the back of the store and the store manager was with two guys dressed in suits that did not look happy. Manager said I’ll bring the read out to you so I went back outside to stage and cone off the suits came out of the store and manager handed me the read out. I said what was up with the two guys in suits he said oh that was just the FBI and they were looking at our surveillance cameras because they were here yesterday fueling their vehicle and got there credit card information taken for $10k and were not happy. 😅 I only use my phone now via app or pay cash because debit card are not protected anymore it’s 100% on you. So use a Gas credit card or actual credit card for security.
Interesting, thanks for sharing.
ALWAYS USE THE TAP FEATURE TO PREVENT FRAUD!
I do too when available. Thanks for your comment. Please share this video with your friends and family.
Here in Thailand using a ATM machine I've also been hit like that for about 5000 dollars. My bank from America did the same, contacted me, on authorization of payments, and my answer was a NO. They covered my lose. Since then I never use any type of money machine here, still in Thailand, I always go into a back to withdraw money ONLY> lesson learned. In today's world scam, thieves are everywhere.
You are so correct. Please share this video with your friends and family.
I always pay inside. Never ever do I pay at the pump. A little inconvenient, but worth the effort to avoid being hacked.
Sounds like a plan. Thanks for sharing.

Clearly , few people learned from theft& scams the last 30 years. Eggs in 1 Basket comes to mind . Rather be careful than Victimized.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video!
The card that I exclusively use for parking & gasoline got compromised. Needless to say, I'm changing passwords, adding two-step, personal pins, & text alerts.
I've been complacent for too long.
Just an hour ago, my heart sunk seeing unfamiliar charges worth hundreds of dollars from some restaurant out of state, and a ride-sharing app that I never used before. Quick call to the bank, and now a personal lockdown of my finances is the action I'm taking now. *sigh*
Sorry for your troubles and hope it all gets cleared up soon. Thank you for watching.
Debit cards are the worst. I had never used my debit card for purchases. Out of the blue twice I had someone steal and use my debit card # for some purchases out of state. After the second time I asked and received a ATM only card (no Visa logo). I haven’t had a problem since 😊
Agree. Thanks for your comment and please share this video with your friends and family.
Thank you! I am always worried about that.

I use an old fashioned cigarette case that I purchased at a thrift store as a wallet. It’s all metal and I had the hinges reinforced by a jeweler, just to be safe.

Pay with cash , no problems.
Thanks for your comment and for watching.
I won`t even own a debit card. Simply because it requires a pin number and it will NOT cover fraudulent charges. Regular credit cards most always cover illegal charges and no pin number needed.
Correct and agree. Please share this video with your friends and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the heads up
Thank you and please share this video with your friends and family.
I would file suit against the gas station where my card was compromised. The station should be held to a standard to keep their pumps correctly functioning. Even if you do not collect anything form a law suite the company will have to put their High Priced attorneys to handle this suit.
Thats a unique approach. Thanks for watching.
I'd say file formal complaints with the Attorney General, FCC and any other government agencies that are available to report fraud. call the district and main offices for the gas station, or store, and give store number and address if possible. also contact the company that services the cc reader/pin pad. THERE HAS TO BE ACCOUNTABILITY!!! companies can educate their employees on how to check the cc reader/ pin pad and verify that they've checked it with a code to enter on the keypad or something. beginning and/ or end of shift. this would narrow down time frame when the skimmer was put in place. yes, an absolute pain in the butt for the employees, but almost a necessity these days. we shouldn't have to be afraid to spend our own hard earned money. 🤬
Thanks for that, forewarned is forearmed.
You bet. Please share this video with your friends and family.
TY Jack, really great advice and story. I don’t think anyone is immune to this stuff. Especially if we all use credit cards.
My card was scammed at a self serve car wash. But was notified by fraud prevention measures very quickly.
Thank you for your comment and for watching. And you never know where the scam will hit, I would never guess a car wash...
@@LandingZoneHome Thanks for using tap and pay method too. The quicker you have your card exposed the better. Yes, me too being a proponent of credit cards vs debit cards.
Thanks. I set alerts after seeing this.
Smart move on your part. Appreciate your comment and thanks for watching.
Thank you for such important information
Most welcome! Please share this video with your friends and family.
For years I used a debit card to get gas at the pump from the time I started working and got my own bank account from 2007 going forward. I had no idea that this could happen, but even if I was informed I would have to learn the hard way several times. I forget the first time it happened, but throughout the 2010's I'd have to get a new card because of fraudulent charges every 2 - 3 years. It wasn't until October 2020 when it happened once again. A coworker and I were talking about it and he told me about using a major credit card for online, grocery and at-the-pump purchases instead of debit because it's a lot more secure. He said just make sure to pay the balance off before the end of the billing cycle and interest is applied. I already had a Discover card that I had set aside for emergencies, so I started using it and ever since then, I've had no problems. I have notifications sent to my phone for every transaction that takes place no matter how small. Thank you for the video! It certainly helps to be more informed about the subject.
Thank you for this well informed comment.
Another tip if you are someone who tends to buy fuel only from certain gas station say like Speedway's. See if they have gift card that works as a payment method at the pump. That way you can just load the gift card perhaps with enough money to fuel your car/truck up twice. That way you don't have to use your credit card OR debit card at the pump.
Thanks for the tip.
Be careful in responding to text messages with NO or YES, as these can also be smishing scams. Best to call CC directly.
Agree, thanks for the comment and for watching.
Yes! I got scammed that way. Fortunately, my credit union was quick to cancel the card and even changed my account number. All the fake charges were removed. Never tell anyone on the phone any account info if they called you. Always tell them you will call back, then call the number on the back of your card.
They are also doing it with a phone calls to get your voice response. We have had about a hundred calls to one of our phones trying to get my husband to answer yes to his name. 😮
Thank you for the useful information about a serious problem. As someone who usually uses a debit card, I will reconsider (actually, at gas pumps, I now try to pay only with cash).
Great comment. Please share this video with your friends and family.
The same thing happened to me . Was contacted by my credit union about out of state charges and spending habits.
Hope you got it resolved in your favor. Thanks for your comment and for watching.
Our bank covered over $1300 in fraudulent charges on my Mastercard debit card once, and about $900 another time.
A good while back I also got some heavy-duty aluminum foil out of the cupboard, cut it to currency size, sealed it with clear shipping tape and put it in my wallet to safeguard it from tech thieves.
Thanks for sharing.
On the chip reader - there are scanners that can read that info from 30 feet so I'm just waiting for all cards to be comprimmized. Need to get the shielded wallet
Yes, I use a RFID protected wallet. Please share this video with your friends and family.
I had the same thing happen, but I only use my American Express card at most places and they literally in 5 minutes asked me if I bought $175 worth of gas. They didn't even let it through before notifying me.
That is good service. Please share this video with your friends.
I love AMEX....have 3 of their cards
@@kirkdunn1379 Plus right now I have a fair amount in rewards money from just my phone and car insurance monthly bills for a year.
A few months ago in my area a gas station customer found a skimmer attached to an in store card reader, and filmed himself confronting the owner who claimed he knew nothing about it. He then posted it on RUclips and contacted police. After he left the gas station, the owner closed immediately after he left and removed all the skimmers he had claimed to know nothing about. He also had them on the ATM and a few pumps. The skimmers were discarded at an unknown location and have never been found, but the moron forgot to turn off the very cameras he installed to prevent people from stealing from him. It was all captured on his surveillance system, and once he realized that he deleted the footage from the business computer...but the cloud is forever 😂
That is just wrong in every way, hope someone went to jail.
@@LandingZoneHome He is currently trying to say that he closed to check and make sure there were no more skimmers anywhere, but that claim is not adding up. If that were true, why did he only check a few pumps and was seen removing skimmers from the pumps he checked and why were none found on the ones he didn't check? Also, why didn't he contact the police instead of disposing of the skimmers himself and letting it slide? Finally, why did he delete that specific footage from his computer system?
I use cash to get gas and I only use the ATM inside my bank to get the cash.
That works!
Thank you for your advice. GH
Thanks for watching.
thanks 4 the info !!!!
Thanks for your comment. Please share this video with your friends and family.
This is exactly why a business should check the cards with a drivers license! If they fail to, then the business should eat the fraudulent charges.. You cannot depend on the Gov't doing anything about these fraud cases--they just don't. Contact your representative and demand they pass a confirm identity for card purchases!!
Thanks for your comment and for watching.
except of they use to purchase online or some self checkout.
I do use a debit MC, and when this happened to me. I got the same type of text, then call. All fraudulent charges were reimbursed- but such a hassle! I need to get one of those cool wallets, thx for the tips- I do appreciate the heads up!😊

My husband and I got nailed recently at the gas station in a parking lot outside of a large retail store. I’m sure you can figure out the name of the retailer. There was a card reader in the pump. When he tried the tap and go it would not take the sale (big hint) he swiped the credit card in the slot and the card reader did its work. We got our gas and left. Next morning he was checking the purchases on the card and SURPRISE SURPRISE. We had bought over $700 worth of concert tickets! We called our credit company and stopped any further purchases. They had tried 10 more times but the parameters stopped them. BTW. The company that owns the gas pumps could not care less. I called a couple of days later to make them aware and they were rude. If you can’t use the tap and go then go. It might have something to do with the magnetic strip that reads your info.
Many thanks for this input. Please share this video with your friends and family.
All good advice.
Thank you!

Best way is to go to a gas station brand that has pay by app on phone, shell, chevron Mobil for example. You pick your pump number and it unlocks the pump and you’re done. Your card never leaves your wallet.
I just learned something, thank you. Please share this video with your friends.

Never use atm/ debit cards at pumps either for this reason. Only use prepaid cards so you limit your loss or regular credit card where at most for fraud you are limited to 50 dollars(banks usually don't even charge you that)
Zero loss with my cards, Credit Union covers all scams. Thanks for your comment.
@@LandingZoneHome they will eventually cover fraudulent charges but until they give the provisional credit at least ultimately make it final, scammers could cause people to bounce checks, mortgage payments, anything hitting a checking / savings account if the victim is wiped out between finding out there is fraud and it being caught. Granted the more robust the fraud detection for they have in place prevent this minimizes this but that's the main point.
Perhaps a list of businesses where skimming, etc. has been identified, with a "do not buy here", would be an incentive for businesses to watch their equipment a bit better. Something akin to the ratings on restaurants? Right now there is no loss to the owners because they get their money, don't they. We are left with all the troubles and tribulations after.
Thats a unique idea. Thank you for watching.

We gat to make these money regardless
Up here in Canada I started using those reusable plastic sheets the government issues. Way faster than cards. You only have to pay once. There is no charge to use them. They are way funner to use. You don't need to get approval from your mom dad or bank before every purchase. No one can find out that lingerie you bought is not your wifes size. They work when the power is out You can lick them to boost your imune system. You can often get a better deal with them. They make you feel richer than the working stiff in front of you using his credit card for boxes of kraft dinner. You always have money on hand to buy some good karma from the street beggars looking for food, booze or drugs.
Lol, all new to me, thanks.
A customer shouldn't have to sign up for any of the systems that will inform you of fraud , us as a customer should automatically get that service when your doing business with the company. Thats my thoughts
I "think" the signup theory is so you can op-in to receive the notices and not think it is just SPAM or a fraud. Thanks for watching.
I went thru this last December. Only place i had used my card in weeks was my gas station. After checking my bank account, i noticed purchases i had not made and notified the bank. Card was closed right away. Since i live by the gas station, i called them. They got mad and denied it happened at there station. At that point call your city auditor and report it.

unless it's stolen then it's gone
One other thing is to use the pumps closest to and/or facing the store. Good information though.

I've had my debit card number stolen (must have been "skimmed") and have been hearing about credit cards being safer. I did finally get RFID card covers. Thanks for all the tips. I'm going to start using my credit card more.

Most important for me is setup and use alert texts for lowest purchase amount. Some allow$50 plus, some allow less ir every purchase. Most can be accessed via account setup online. Many times alert comes in moments after charge so you know if it's authorized.
Great tips. Thanks.
I only buy gas with a bank debit card that never has more than a hundred dollars in it. My bank app lets me refill it as needed. My main account has no electronic access. When local I always get gas at BJ's.
Sounds like a plan.
This happened to me where they used my info to buy several hundred dollars worth of gas spread across several uniform payments. Thankfully criminals don't seem to care about whether or not the purchase looks suspicious because what normal person buys exactly $100 worth of gas 4 times all within 24 hours? Anyway, seeing several payments of exactly $2,500 in your video reminded me of how they don't seem to care about covering their tracks. Makes me think they don't get caught often.
Agree completely. Appreciate your comment and thanks for watching.
They aren't worried about being caught. So called law enforcement won't bother themselves with this.
"Law enforcement" doesn't. From the cop on the beat, who thinks this is some sort of insurance thing, here's your proof-of-theft report, that's all- to the local "prosecutors," who don't, 'cause Social Justice requires more, not less, crime. Yep, that's what they believe. And let's give some blame, yes, to our slimeball fellow citizens who are so willing to devote so much effort to steal what is yours.
@@critiqueoflife Ugh, it's always these social justice clowns that nobody likes and yet nobody seems to do anything about. I had a lawyer roommate once, scummiest most "brag about bribing local politicians" type of dude I ever met, and a total sperg who couldn't do simple things like keep his room clean. He once told a story where someone was shooting at police in the middle of the street, but because they were using an armored vehicle as cover he acted like them retaliating by killing the guy was "unjustified" as they "weren't actually in danger."
Great info; never use a debit card. I am a point of sale programmer and understand the vulnerabilities
And you have probably heard all the stories. Thank you for sharing.
Had the same thing happen to me at a gas station I normally don't use and at the pump. I should have realized something was wrong but I didn't. Luckily my bank caught some phony transactions and alerted me and replaced my card. I hate it that people out there do these types of things.

Exact same thing happened to me. A lady paid her 6 month back rent of $5000 with my card. Credit card sent text message but money already gone. The credit card company said they would pursue it but couldn’t tell me what they did. Gas station got new pumps

I have two debt cards, one is linked to my main checking account and stays locked away. I keep enough in that account to make my automatic payments.
I have a different debit card that I carry with me, I usually use it for gas, groceries, etc., so there isn’t much available with that card.
If l’m going to get something that cost more, get new glasses for example, I transfer enough to cover that cost.
Also, if there isn’t enough available for a purchase, the card gets declined. Then I have to transfer money, but that requires me going online, to an ATM, or to my bank.

I always go inside the gas station to use my card to pay for gas to avoid the $75.00 to $150.00 hold these pump card readers trigger on your card, and to better avoid my card info from being stolen.

I use the gas station apps. Most major brands have their own apps. They allow Apple or Google pay. My credit card never touches a gas station card reader. Bonus. They usually give you .05 to .10 off a gallon.
Sounds good.
I stopped worrying about the credit card being hijacked at the gas station! I bought a Chevy Bolt EV. No more gas!
Do you pay for the charge?
@@LandingZoneHomeTechnically, I redone my lighting system with LEDs and saved 30%. So, the Bolt uses 15% of it.
Had it happened to me at a Fred Mayer Feul station

Well we’re old enough to remember the days when we asked customers if they wanted the carbon paper from the old hand held credit card machines, this was in the pre-self serve era. Then all stores no matter if they were grocery or retail like K-Mart or Woolworth did the same thing. Then there was never a thought about all of this nonsense that has come from advancing technology that has encompassed our world. And the evil criminal masterminds that have extorted the technology as well. Then last but not least it’s still a good idea to get one of the blue paper towels from the windshield bucket to hold the pump handle with as there’s always some type of crap or other scum that is in the handle that you certainly do not want to touch with your bare hands!
Lol, I had forgot about those carbon copies. Thanks for sharing.
