    Now this is a true 'film look', unlike the so-called cinematic videos out there. Muted colours but a dense look, good skin tones, well controlled highlights, good shadow detail without crushing the blacks.

    • @ryansulak
      @ryansulak 5 лет назад +10

      do you know why it looks so 'dense'? It definitely has a fuller, softer quality to the film. Whereas, the Fuji Xt3, while I love the colorspace, remains too sharp, and seems more digital looking. This footage is really unrivaled from what I've seen for that film look, But from a usability perspective, I much prefer the Fuji. I'm wondering if there is any way to achieve this look in post with the Fuji?

    • @raksh9
      @raksh9 5 лет назад +2

      @@ryansulak Not sure why, it might have something to do with the combination of sensor, bitrate and codec of the P4K. You've probably noticed that RED Epic files have a density that a lot of other cameras lack, too. This isn't a RED but there's a sense of 'thickness' to the image which I'm not seeing in cams like the XT3, like you say.

      @@ryansulak i've seen some tests for XT3 where they turned down sharpness, highlights, etc all the way and opened the shadows. All while using the Eterna profile and it looks quite nice. but of course it comes down to lenses and there's just something about blackmagic that hasn't been matched for that film look I feel.

      it is just not talent, it's the actual camera too. Each camera has a specific look. Everything you have is an extension of your body. Would you throw away your arm. Don't think of a camera as thing you can just throw away. That's why DPs and directors chose certain cameras, lens, etc.

      @johnny walker Bokeh is an artificial, overused gimmick that doesn't occur in human vision, even when focusing on an object 3 inches away. If you're using Bokeh in place of good storytelling, your filmmaking skills are brokeh. If this is just about directing audience attention, you can do that with selective (noir?) lighting, staging, and color.

    • @landonp629
      @landonp629 3 года назад +1

      The whole shallow DOF craze is a scourge. You hardly EVER see true shallow DOF in many movies - and when its used, it's used to tell a story. You only tend to see a ton of shallow DOF in 'cinematic test videos' on RUclips. Thankfully, this video didn't fall into the trap... It used the shallow DOF sparingly, and that makes it stand out when its used - in a good way - like at 2:47 in the clip.

    The funny thing is that everyone that seeks the "film look" hasn't seen an actual 35mm under normal viewing conditions probably in a decade. I helped out of with the last theater in the USA to open that only showed 35mm prints three years ago when they first opened. And yeah...as much as I love film, it was NOWHERE near as good as the top of the line 4k Sony projectors. When our theater finally switched to digital it was like night and day better. Our prints and projectors were pristine, but unless you're watching an actual Technicolor print or 70mm print, film isn't as good as you remember. The only great thing about film is that the cadence of motion feels more natural when projected. That said, film as a capture format is still up there with the best digital cameras. It's just that projecting actual film isn't as good as digital and there is definitely a generational loss between the master print and print 1,295.

    It's just so damn good. People rant and rave about how the original pocket is so much more "cinematic" but the soft yet detail packed image I'm seeing here is cinema, the original had a tendency to get mushy when it was thrown complex scenes, film doesn't get mushy and neither does the new P4K. I see this quality on the big screen in films old and new, it blows me away that I and ever one else can own this camera without taking out a new mortgage. It is leaps and bounds ahead of it's predecessor and despite it's many short comings there just isn't any alternative, there's nothing that competes again'st this camera, it's in a category of it's own.
    Surprisingly some of my favourite footage so far has come from the lumix 12-35 and I attribute this to the lenses defects that aren't corrected in camera, it give's a very smooth but not clinically sharp image that reminds me of the arri alexa.
    I'm a fan, and as much as I hate myself for camera chasing, I need this camera.
