    I was at a big Toyota dealership with 5 neighboring Toyota delaerships in a 15 mile radius. Ups on a Saturday morning was absolutely crucial. I began coming to the lot extra early (there were 20 salesman all working bell to bell) so that I can have the first up. The way the rotations worked on my lot was you'd have 1st up, 2nd, 3rd so on and so forth. Once you take your up, you're stuck with that customer until you either sell them or you find a way to get them to leave so that you can get right back in line.
    Getting that 1st up is very important because it sets the tone for the rest of the day and it gets the ball in motion. By motion, I mean timing.
    The average car sale takes about 3.5-4 hours including delivery. So realistically, in a 10-12 hour shift, you can squeeze in 4 legit car sales.
    If your first up is a "jack" and you don't find a way to get them out and get back in line, you will be so far in procession that by the time it is your turn to be up, it will be about 1:30-2:30 already-the time where people who just finished eating lunch want to walk it off-ultimately meaning no sale.
    If your 1st up turns into a sale, you are in luck because by the time you are done delivering the car, you will be 2nd or 3rd up and the time would still only be 11am or so. You now have time for sale #2, which if you finish quickly, you can begin your 3rd sale of the day at 3pm.
    3pm hits and you get your 3rd up and if you sell that one, you now have an opportunity to catch 1 more up at 6pm.....dealership closes at 9 (not really, we always stay open late).
    My point in all of this is, when I was in the car business, I looked at it as a game-a serious game. The other sales staff I worked with were all very, very shady. They would lie about their ups, "lot drop" customers to get back in line, claim that your up is theres because they see that your up shares the same ethnicity as them, say that their up doesn't speak English and leads the customer to you (I'm Vietnamese and in my area, we are the most Vietnamese populated city in America.....) because they know that Vietnmaese people always haggle and never buy.....the list goes on.
    I was the newest and the greenest pea on that lot. I began as a BDC representative and when the lockdowns started to happen in March 2020, almost all of the sales staff opted to stay at home to collect EDD while I was called to be in sales. Next thing you know, with nobody's help, I was a 25 car guy my first month alone (April, no help from others, no special treatment from Sales Managers).
    From there on, I was 25+ car a month saleman and hit every raffle and every bonus they had (we're not just talking about the F&I bonus but cash bonuses for selling certain cars, or certain amount of a certian car etc) and the dealership was split in 2. People were either with me or against me. The ones with me always had my support. I would close deals for them all day and never even bother asking for 1/2. I helped people hit their 15 car F&I bonus monthly. But the haters will always hate.
    It got to the point where people were replicating my 1st up strategy and put my theory to the test. People who never show up to work on time started showing up at the lot at 8:45am (we open at 9, but I am always there at like 7am to prepare). 8:45 turned into 8:30, 8:30 to 8am. It got so competitive that I literally had to start coming in even earlier than my usual 7am. I would arrive at the lot and have to go through the Service side to get to my desk (they open at 6am)
    Your video just reminded me of why I love the car business and also why I had to leave the car business. I love the sale, the thrill of getting a full pop or getting all the warranties and maintenance, holding gross and keeping markup. But one thing I will never miss is that 1st up of the day.....it will make or break your day. And someone with a temper like me who gets a 1st up that wanted to kick tired before meeting someone for brunch.....ehh.....I would be pissed the rest of the day!
    Either way, this is the 2nd comment I've left on your videos. I really enjoy them. It's real dealership life. Although your experiences at your delaership differ than mine only in magnitude. My dealership is located in the Bay Area, I mean, there were Toyota dealerships everywhere. In my city alone was 3, each 10 minutes away from each other.
    I'd be curious to see in 2022 how your delaership would be when busy!

    I've always wanted to work for a dealership! This makes me excited!

    • @Jonas-nf2bc
      @Jonas-nf2bc 3 года назад +3

      It is exciting. Until your partner starts complaining that you're working too much. Until you realize each month you can't take your off day the last week of the month. Until you realize that there are no such things as personal time off, or Holidays (Excluding Christmas and Thanksgiving Day). Until you accept that your paycheck will never be consistent. One month you sell 12 cars at an average of $400 per car, plus your bonuses ($5800 - $6000), not bad. Next month you sell 9 cars, 1 car short of bonuses and each car sale is a flat or mini, payable of $125 - $150 ($1100 - $1500). Since you have a guaranteed base draw of $2500, meaning now you owe the dealership $1000 - $1500. So you start the next month negative $1500 in the bucket. Then you make $3300 again minus the $1500 the dealership paid you. Now your gf/partner is angry because you can't go to Red Lobster or some overpriced shit of a restaurant, because you're broke. Then she leaves. Now your FUCK the world mentality comes out and you adopt the reality of all sales people that says, "These Customers can Kiss My Ass" which leads to near physical altercations with coworkers and management because Now, YOU HATE EVERYONE. So welcome to the world of car sales! Stay single or be old and settled. This industry leads all industries in divorce rate, domestic violence and always near the bottom of the worst anger professions. SAVE YOURSELF!!!

    Love your videos, I have been selling for 24 years most of that time was with chevy. I think one of the biggest challenges for myself and probably many sales people, is keeping a positive attitude. Especially when you go in on a Saturday where so much is expected and everyone is busy and you take 1, 2,3,4 customer's you look around and everyone is selling cars and your not doing anything wrong but your helping people who just wanna sit in the car or then another one is looking for the daughter, the other one is comparing the silverados to a F150 and so on and I know this happens to the best of us or when you hit that wall when you can't sell 1 for a entire week 😉 my question is what do you do to keep a positive attitude and not look in the mirror and start questioning yourself . Like you start to wonder if you smell or you start to question everything until all of a sudden everything you touch turns back to gold. In a nutshell, how do you keep positive when you hit that wall.

      Manny I sold cars for over 12 years and have since retired . I have had NUMEROUS bad dreams over the years of me in a dream working at some dealership with a large amount of salesman all selling cars at the same time in the booth and I am not. I would walk into the dealership and I can see everybody at their desks working deals .
      I would also get the feeling that I do not remember when I last sold a car which would mean to me that my job is on the chopping block. I would wake up and I was so relieved it was just a bad dream and I was not selling cars to make a living. The other recurring nightmare over the years is of me working at some dealership competing with 15 to 20 salespeople for a single customer . What is bad is that it would be a VERY LOW volume dealer in my dream and I cannot even get one customer to try and sell a car to. Many times I thought it was better to be lucky then have skill. I seriously doubt the top salesman can close one out of 4 ups like the ones you talked about.

They make mistakes, they lie, they have the worst customer service and do not call you back or respond to messages. I suggest you to stop waiting around for UPs and find prospects within your dealership's portfolio. If you don't have a portfolio manager and if the current clients are available for any sales person in your dealership then pick up the phone and start calling as many as people you can. Tell them you have a buyer for their vehicle, let them know demand is high for their vehicle and you would like to go over the option to buy their old car and get them in to a new car.
    Dig in the gold mine aka Service customers. When I was a sales person I used to aim for 15-20 cars too but I learned how to sell 30-40 cars once I started mastering service clients. There is a lot to it and it's hard to type everything down but we sales people learn as we go. Talk to every service client, talk to all your lease clients and as well as your finance clients.
    It's a numbers game, a sales person should make as many as calls possible in a day, write as many as emails and create as many as appointments possible. Once you get to a point where you don't get to take ups, then my friend you have entered the next level. if you are still after ups then it means you have a lot of spare time.

Is it a good time right now to pursue the career in sales with keep in mind this COVID situation? I am little afraid to join but I really wanna get into this business. • @DaveBsellsChevy
      @DaveBsellsChevy  Год назад +1

      Hey Brandon, pay plans can be very different between dealerships and manufacturers so it is very hard to estimate how much money one can make in auto sales. I have base salary, demo allowance, commission, unit bonus from dealership, unit bonus from GM, we can also earn money from Onstar setting up free trials on used cars. Currently for 4th quarter there are GM Certified spins, basically we get to spin a digital slot machine to win $50, $75, $100, $150, or $250. We used to have "old age" bonuses on certain vehicles (nothing is old age anymore). I remember when they paid me $1000 because I sold a new 2017 Camaro that had been on the lot for two years. They lost $6,000 on the car and still paid me the $1000. The money can be really good but isn't always consistent so you have to learn to not spend when times are good to cover the times that aren't.

      Again, it is very hard to estimate without knowing the dealership pay plan. With a pay plan you can do a little math and figure out an estimate based on different amounts of units sold. If you apply and they give you a pay plan shoot it to me in an email and I'll take a look at it. dave@schumacherlivingston.com

    I think your comment about wanting to get in front of the next customer is telling. I do my own auto maintenance and there are times when one must go to the dealership to get parts. Typically you have to walk the "gauntlet" of the show room to get to the parts counter. If it is a slow day you just see the sales people just waiting around to pounce upon you. It feels like a shark ready to "devour fresh meat". Really hate that encounter and try to avoid show rooms as much as possible.

    wow that's interesting customers pull up never know what they want. • @DaveBsellsChevy
      @DaveBsellsChevy  3 года назад +2

      It's not that we don't like cash it's just that dealers can make profit from the bank on financing. With me the price is the same either way. Some dealers use their fine print to say you must finance a percentage of the vehicle through them to get their sale price. We don't do that.
