You do not. Think of it this way; in real estate, you have your sales agent who takes you around to see homes and write the contract. They are supervised by a real estate broker, who signs off on the deal. A freight ‘agent’ works for a freight broker, the one with the DOT# and authority. There are no educational or experience requirements to get your freight broker authority. If you just wanted to be an agent, you would not need authority, and some freight brokers will hire and train you. Just like a real estate broker, however, the freight broker will take a cut of your business.
