The flowers being fed to Rio are being harvested from Rio, which is why Rio is hooked up to tubes in that tank. It's sad to see the state Rio is in now, but Rio is essentially just being used to mass-produce shimmer. Not rlly an important detail imo, but its just a (kinda sad) fun fact~
I was under the impression that the flowers were what produced shimmer. He was using shimmer to prevent Rio from dying even though the exposure was causing it to mutate. When you understand his story, after losing his daughter he researched heavily into sciences that could prevent death. Singed's (the doctor) fervor in his studies lead to a disagreement with Heimerdinger and left the academy. He now conducts his research in a cave near the bottom sections of Zaun. His goal is to prevent death so that he doesn't ever have to lose something or someone again. Which is why, despite any discomfort on Rios part, Singed continues to forcibly keep it alive. That's why Rio is still hooked up to tubes suspended in water, he's still injecting it slowly with more shimmer to prevent its death. Granted it's more of in a vegetable state when we see it. The other thing is if it had to be harvested from an animals, we should have seen animals somewhere at the shimmer factory we see later in the series. Again this was my perception of this situation

The time jump Is about 7-9 years they never really clarify ages. Unless it’s important for the story. So Caitlyn is around 20-23. Vi is 22-25. And Jink is 17-19 years old. Jayce and Viktor are most likely early 30s since Jayce said he was 27 in ep 2. Mel’s age is unclear but I’d assume early 30s as well.
They said exactly 7 on twitter. And Cait is older than Vi. Jinx is definitely 18. The writers know better than to make a character like that and then make her a minor. (Because of how people will react to her I mean.)

Edit 2: Singed (the Mad Chemist, who created shimmer for Silco), is an absolute MENACE, he's deranged and cruel. There are a few theories for season 2 which I won't mention, but in the LoL lore, he created chemical weapons for Noxus (Medarda's homecountry) for them to use against Ionia (basically a magic Japan in this universe). He's an absolute monster...
Amanda Overton is one of the writers of Arcane and she has a lot to do with letting the relationship of Caitlyn and Vi be known. She’s an amazing writer and also has involvement in the shows Severance and Monarch which also has gay representation. If you ever have the time you should definitely react to Bridging The Rift documentary about the making of Arcane. It goes deeper into how the show was made. I guarantee your love for the show with be even greater.

This- someone also needed to keep Silco in check to make sure that he doesn't do things too far. Because if not him, someone even more corrupt may become sheriff and be Silco's loyal dog
Mostly he's in over his head. He felt pressure to get results and grasped at any chance that would help him get it and that made him easy prey for Silco. I think the show didn't really have enough time to flesh out the character because it's the only character people don't really connect with even though his arc is very tragic and human. I think his story is a really good vehicle to show how easy it is for some bad cultural perceptions and a bit of power to turn a well-intentioned person to make horrible decisions. Just some dumb cop whose actions are the catalyst to the whole city going in chaos. And by the time it gets *really* bad he feels like it's too late to come clean, enacting the blockade and turning the whole undercity in to a prison rather than telling Jayce the truth. When you're in that deep you stop thinking rationally, he's afraid for his daughter, but it's not like he's really protecting her interests with his actions, what Silco's threat achieves is making him *feel* like he is.
Also, he had to. He did one thing for Silco, made one mistake and became Silco's b*tch since. Otherwise what was he going to do? Say he didn't mean to work with Silco to kill his superior? And they would just believe him? Also his child isn't that young. The time skip was 7 years, she looks about 7. And as we saw Silco is not above threatening people's kid's to get them to behave.

just so you know, coming from the writers themselves on reddit : the time jump between Episode 3 and 4 is about 7 years. Both Vi and Caitlyn were about 16 in the first act, and botha re about 23/24 yo. Powder / Jinx was 10/11yo in act 1 so she's 17/18yo in Act 2 Jayce was 24 in Act 1, so he's 31 in Act 2
Yep, they don't say but I think Caitlyn is a little younger than Vi since they used a different child voice actor for her like they did with Powder so I think Caitlyn's probably like 15. Amanda Overton one of the many writers did give ranges but she said "we think" so it isn't set in stone really and said it was up to interpretation. she said like Cait and Vi where 14 -16, Powder she said was 11-12, but then archives says Vi was about 17 so i think 16 is way more reasonable. Powder being 10 is my person thought since that's how old the actress was when she was hired. Some people think Powder like as young as 7 to 9 too so its really interpretable.

In episode 6 Silco "confirms" this by saying Vi and Cait are "roughly the same age". It would make sense tbh. As for the voice actress, honestly she has so little lines in the first act... I think that was mostly because her voice in act 2 is a LOT older, which wouldn't have worked on a 16yo girl. Unlike Hailee which did a great job at acting for a 16yo as well as a 23yo with subtle differences in voice acting.

I was sorta basing it off another Amanda Overton thing on twitter where she suggested Cait to be younger, but again these are largely her twitter head canons. Yeah, they are around the same age but I think Caitlyn's the younger of the two. This is a controversial thing i suppose, but i don't hear a difference in the two Vi's personally. But it doesn't matter.

As a character, I love Marcus specifically because I think he reflects one of the two major themes in Arcane: everyone has some goal and ambition that on its own is decent or noble but because of who they are and the circumstances that led them here they cannot be fully heroic and in achieving it. They're all morally flawed, it's just easier to notice in characters that act as antagonists and oppositions than in our protagonists :) I don't like Marcus as a person but I can see where he's doing what he thinks are moral actions and calls that I ultimately do understand and almost agree with (very far and few between they are, like keeping Vi hidden Bec he explicitly says "he'll kill you if he hears you" it's just what the does afterwards I don't agree with). He's a coward and prideful which stops him from being a hero of piltover like he wants to be

If anything this show really illustrates how politics can ruin technology that is initially meant to help. We know that any new thing created is gonna be used either as control or as a weapon. AND THE VI EFFECT IS REAL. Jinx is severely traumatized, I don't agree with her actions but I understand where they come from. This show keeps us on the eeeedge.
This show has brought me several joys: A masterclass in story; Fantastic Character development; phenomenal visuals that has pushed the definition of Western Animation, and what I least expected: reaction videos??? I was never into this form of medium until Arcane came into my life. I am both glad for its story as much as I am how much it has benefited content creators I would have not encountered otherwise. From a straight autistic dude that works in animation among my many wonderful colleagues in the LGBTQ+ in my industry: you are lovely, and I have enjoyed every moment of your videos! Heimerdinger vs Jayce: what is intersting to me is that both are right and wrong, and both messed up. Heimer is right to be wary of magic and its dangers, but his passivity and propension to give speeches rather than act lead the Undercity to its terrible condition. Instead of threatening the total destruction of Viktor's work, he should have properly mentored his students and tried to work with them to find a compromise. On another hand, Jayce was totally wrong to kick him off the Council. Yes, progress is necessary, but not at all costs.

The time jump Is about 7-9 years they never really clarify ages. Unless it’s important for the story. So Caitlyn is around 20-23. Vi is 22-25. And Jink is 17-19 years old. Jayce and Viktor are most likely early 30s since Jayce said he was 27 in ep 2. Mel’s age is unclear but I’d assume early 30s as well.
Pretty sure Jayce said he was 24 in ep2, but yh everything else tracks afaik

Edit: as a direct answer to Piltover's Hextech, Zaun started relying more and more on Chemtech (when they go to the arcade Powder connects a pipe or hose of sorts and the chemicals turn on the lights, and Sevika's new arm, and all that jazz), as such, Silco became the first ChemBaron (sort of druglords and gangsters), other chembarons are Crimson, Marko Volkage, Petrok Grime, Saito Takeda, Renata Glasc, Velveteen Lenare, Voss, Wencher Spindlaw, Karvyq the Silverhanded and Silco's Collective/Board of Directors in this series.
Edit 2: Singed (the Mad Chemist, who created shimmer for Silco), is an absolute MENACE, he's deranged and cruel. There are a few theories for season 2 which I won't mention, but in the LoL lore, he created chemical weapons for Noxus (Medarda's homecountry) for them to use against Ionia (basically a magic Japan in this universe). He's an absolute monster...
Amanda Overton is one of the writers of Arcane and she has a lot to do with letting the relationship of Caitlyn and Vi be known. She’s an amazing writer and also has involvement in the shows Severance and Monarch which also has gay representation. If you ever have the time you should definitely react to Bridging The Rift documentary about the making of Arcane. It goes deeper into how the show was made. I guarantee your love for the show with be even greater.

This- someone also needed to keep Silco in check to make sure that he doesn't do things too far. Because if not him, someone even more corrupt may become sheriff and be Silco's loyal dog
Mostly he's in over his head. He felt pressure to get results and grasped at any chance that would help him get it and that made him easy prey for Silco. I think the show didn't really have enough time to flesh out the character because it's the only character people don't really connect with even though his arc is very tragic and human. I think his story is a really good vehicle to show how easy it is for some bad cultural perceptions and a bit of power to turn a well-intentioned person to make horrible decisions. Just some dumb cop whose actions are the catalyst to the whole city going in chaos. And by the time it gets *really* bad he feels like it's too late to come clean, enacting the blockade and turning the whole undercity in to a prison rather than telling Jayce the truth. When you're in that deep you stop thinking rationally, he's afraid for his daughter, but it's not like he's really protecting her interests with his actions, what Silco's threat achieves is making him *feel* like he is.
Also, he had to. He did one thing for Silco, made one mistake and became Silco's b*tch since. Otherwise what was he going to do? Say he didn't mean to work with Silco to kill his superior? And they would just believe him?
Also his child isn't that young. The time skip was 7 years, she looks about 7. And as we saw Silco is not above threatening people's kid's to get them to behave.

just so you know, coming from the writers themselves on reddit : the time jump between Episode 3 and 4 is about 7 years.
Both Vi and Caitlyn were about 16 in the first act, and botha re about 23/24 yo.
Powder / Jinx was 10/11yo in act 1 so she's 17/18yo in Act 2
Jayce was 24 in Act 1, so he's 31 in Act 2
Yep, they don't say but I think Caitlyn is a little younger than Vi since they used a different child voice actor for her like they did with Powder so I think Caitlyn's probably like 15.
Amanda Overton one of the many writers did give ranges but she said "we think" so it isn't set in stone really and said it was up to interpretation. she said like Cait and Vi where 14 -16, Powder she said was 11-12, but then archives says Vi was about 17 so i think 16 is way more reasonable. Powder being 10 is my person thought since that's how old the actress was when she was hired. Some people think Powder like as young as 7 to 9 too so its really interpretable.
@@pugisherpug4366 I think the writers said on Reddit that Vi and Cait should be around the same age, even if it's not exactly the same. In episode 6 Silco "confirms" this by saying Vi and Cait are "roughly the same age". It would make sense tbh. As for the voice actress, honestly she has so little lines in the first act... I think that was mostly because her voice in act 2 is a LOT older, which wouldn't have worked on a 16yo girl. Unlike Hailee which did a great job at acting for a 16yo as well as a 23yo with subtle differences in voice acting.

I was sorta basing it off another Amanda Overton thing on twitter where she suggested Cait to be younger, but again these are largely her twitter head canons. Yeah, they are around the same age but I think Caitlyn's the younger of the two. This is a controversial thing i suppose, but i don't hear a difference in the two Vi's personally. But it doesn't matter.

As a character, I love Marcus specifically because I think he reflects one of the two major themes in Arcane: everyone has some goal and ambition that on its own is decent or noble but because of who they are and the circumstances that led them here they cannot be fully heroic and in achieving it. They're all morally flawed, it's just easier to notice in characters that act as antagonists and oppositions than in our protagonists :)
I don't like Marcus as a person but I can see where he's doing what he thinks are moral actions and calls that I ultimately do understand and almost agree with (very far and few between they are, like keeping Vi hidden Bec he explicitly says "he'll kill you if he hears you" it's just what the does afterwards I don't agree with). He's a coward and prideful which stops him from being a hero of piltover like he wants to be
I feel the same way about silco. He is my favourite character for exactly this reason.

AND THE VI EFFECT IS REAL. Jinx is severely traumatized, I don't agree with her actions but I understand where they come from. This show keeps us on the eeeedge.
This show has brought me several joys: A masterclass in story; Fantastic Character development; phenomenal visuals that has pushed the definition of Western Animation, and what I least expected: reaction videos??? I was never into this form of medium until Arcane came into my life. I am both glad for its story as much as I am how much it has benefited content creators I would have not encountered otherwise.

Heimerdinger vs Jayce: what is intersting to me is that both are right and wrong, and both messed up. Heimer is right to be wary of magic and its dangers, but his passivity and propension to give speeches rather than act lead the Undercity to its terrible condition. Instead of threatening the total destruction of Viktor's work, he should have properly mentored his students and tried to work with them to find a compromise. On another hand, Jayce was totally wrong to kick him off the Council. Yes, progress is necessary, but not at all costs.

BTW, Mel did not know Vitor was dying so she thought Jayce left her after doing it one in the middle of the night and that is why she was upset.
