If you smell your coil... don't just immediately shut off your sub, that allows for the heat to sit on the coil and cause more damage... Lower the volume and let the movement of the subwoofer "blow air" on the coil and cool it down.

@@Ryyderdie no, it's still good and works better now. Not even burned at all. They just said it's a breaking process. It works good and isn't stiff. So it's good
Yesterday my buddy at work was asking me the same thing. He had it installed at some shop blew his first sub in 2 months so they told him to upgrade to a better sub. Even with the amp only being half the rms of the sub it still stinks in about a minute and of coarse they put all the tuning knobs against the seat rail so you can't adjust them. And this is coming from a shop that has been doing car audio for 25 years now. You should have seen his face when I told him I've been putting double the rms to my subs for about two years now with no problems sure they get warm but they don't smell like burnt coil. I told him the key is clean power just like jp said. Anyways have a great day and keep those subs bumpin :)
Great topic! It happens to a lot of people. Another reason a sub will stink, is playing below tuning at full tilt. People ask me the same question. I ask them how did they set their gains and a lot of them are set correctly. Then I asked them what their enclosure is tuned too, along with that I ask them are you playing lower than your enclosure is tuned for and that's where I tell them that they are playing below tuning. Oh, you can definitely play below tuning, but not way below tuning and not full tilt either. So that's important too. Cannot wait to see the NeoHoe back in action. It's going to be crazy!
Burnt up my first 15 had bass boost turned up on radio and got a friend to tune it. Good thing I only paid 100 bucks. Got a new Rockford 15 wired up correctly to amp and tuned it myself been bumping since September.
because the dd 1 specifically looks for distortion, you can get distortion before clipping. but alot of spl guys dont worry about the bit of distortion, especially if they dont play extended periods of time. dd1 is mostly for daily setups, to keep in a safe zone.
Clipping is distortion so... also that's apples to oranges. Anyone that wants clean power will obviously use a dd-1 or oscilloscope. I don't think anyone wants any level of distortion or clipping. With exception to a slight bit of clip on a burp or something. My point is that, for 1... the dd-1 is much more expensive than many oscilloscopes available(some are insanely priced and unnecessary)and secondly due to as I just mentioned... I wouldn't consider the oscilloscope the better option. Seeing as how the dd-1 picks up distortion sooner than most oscilloscopes I've seen in use. You say it's made to pick up distortion specifically which is my point also, as I said distortion is clipping. So you kinda stated the obvious while referring to 1 thing as of its 2 separate things. Distortion and clipping. Can you have distortion without clipping? Well yeah of course. Bad sound track ect. But nonetheless, clipping is distortion. So I'm pretty sure plenty of huge competition builds were tuned with a dd-1. There are only like a hundred dd-1 related videos here on RUclips. Also I own 1 some I'm quite aware of its purpose/capabilities. Thanks though for clearing that up for me😂
@@allrimmedout I've been known all that since I was like 14 or 15. About distortion at least. Hey JP, I bought a evl12 from you and I put it on a rp1500. I have had the coil smoking and it hasn't died yet, the coil does bottom out now. I know its my fault so if it dies I will buy a new one from you.
Go ported, it cools the drivers magnet and voice coil more efficently than a sealed enclosure. Also, since ported enclosure deliever more output, you do not have turn the gains up as much.
I'm uploading a clean sounding demo right now. The glue! Yep! The coil motor, basket.. They can take heat. Even Rockford Fosgate uses aluminium formers rather than paper. They still burn the glue.

Great video JP!!! 👌👌👌 Very helpful and very informative but sometimes it's hard to tell if it's your subwoofers that smell like burn or one of your amps depending on how many you are running!!! Especially when your sitting in the front drivers seat and your listing to your music and driving at the same time!!! JP how much power over the RMS rating would you say is safe to run a subwoofer before you start to smell your subs???
Made this mistake when I first installed my EVL 12s into my Nissan Versa. Didn’t set the gains properly or nothing. Then I put them in my Chrysler 300 properly with waaaay more clean power and tuned with an oscilloscope and what my amp settings were in my other car I was clipping those subs to high heaven. Got it good now, smell is stuck now as I had burnt those voice coils pretty good lmao
Sir I hope you can help I’m from New Orleans. Right out of the box “the manufacturer box” my subs smell like burnt smell, gassing etc. whatever it is I’m worried if I got messed over and bought used, refurbished or about to blow subs. Thanks
Distortion kills speakers MUCH faster than power. I had a dual voice coil 8” sub wired to 2 ohms. The sun was only rated for 150 watts RMS(75 watts per coil). According to the multimeter, peak RMS power going to the sun was just a hair over 500 watts! I played the sun for 9 months with no problem, then I made a video blowing the sun. Once the bass boost was turned up and the volume turned up above a clean signal into clipping, the sub did not even last 30 seconds! That video is on my channel.
I was wondering the same thing I just got a new sub I'm not anywhere near clipping, damn I'm not even halfway up my amplifiers power but it's still smells like hell
Hello, i just got installed a 10 inch subwoofer and I’m getting a funky smell when I listen to music I’m not pushing the limit on it.. is it because it’s breaking in and it’ll go away?
Had 12s Kicker what I clipped it I had my amp Hz at max and I used my gain as a volume it was bumping hard but it down. It was probs it first clip cause it didn't distorted
I have two 12” JL Audios with a 1000w kicker amp in my Escalade and a few days ago I started to get a smell coming from the box not a burnt smell but like hot garbage? I had the speakers in storage for over a year so I thought I rat might’ve crawl inside the box and died in there or maybe one of the guys from the shop that installed the system maybe left a burrito in there? Idk but my shyt stinks bro and I’m fixing to unscrew one of my speakers tomorrow and check it out 😖
My pioneer 100w subwoofer doesn't smell like burning or heat. It smells sort of sweet. I have have a Phillips surround sound subwoofer smell the exact same way. It blows the smell through the bass port. Is it just the box or what?
Awesome info bro. Wish more people understood this topic. One thing I learned about to is using subs that are overrated. Rockville. Lol. DD1 and CC1 are excellent tools. Now I have better subs and the amp and deck are properly tuned. No smell. No clipping. Shaking the windshield. Oh. Audiopipes BDC2 12S. 4 subs on 3k. Now I have also heard that just cause you smoke a sub doesn't mean its blown... is that true? How do you test a sub after its been smoked?
So what happens when you did it yourself, set it with a good multimeter to amps, runs perfectly fine, but when it gets to low frequencies it starts to smell. I’m thinking it’s just that the subwoofers won’t play that low? Or maybe the amp? My setup is 2 comp r 12s 500 rms each wired to 2 ohms with a ct sounds 2000.1d (rated at 1200 rms at 2 ohms) with gain tuned to 43 amps even tho the calculation was around 44.5 for 1k watts and sub box tuned to 39 hz and amp subsonic tuned to 30hz to play it safe
I have had an Epicenter in the past and have one built into my sub amp now. If you use it on music with little to no bass, it is pretty cool what it can do. I personally don't use it with bass heavy music. Your system may be able to take the abuse, but I recommend caution and some moderation unless you're rich and like buying stuff over and over again.
The thing I'm not understanding is how TF my old 2000w soundstream pushed my t5 12 subs hard AF with no clipping and now I have the JP33 which the only way I can duplicate the same level of bass is by turning it way up and clipping like crazy. I've literally bought and returned 2 new soundstream amps, 2 taramps and now debating on the JP33 all just to replace a $300 soundstream amp I've had for about 12 years. The only conclusion I can come to is I like really low frequency bass so in order for me to hit the notes I like, I seem to have to turn the gain up way past safe levels. I actually had it bumping real nice today, until I started smelling my brand new subs that I just installed. I'm no noob but I'm at a fkn loss at this point 🤷
You never finished what you were saying about "if you don't have a dd-1 or o-scope how you can set your gains". I know you said your ear. But what if someone doesn't know what to listen for. There is also to volt meter method right.
Hey i had a ? For you. My truck recently got totaled and it had 2 shallow 10's and a 1000 watt amp. Im soon to buy a 2 door dodge truck. Got about 3k for an entire sytem
I have a zv5 15 on a taramps 5k, my amp shows the clipping light flash like crazy at higher volume. Also when i first hooked the sub up it started belling like smoke or a wierd smell like a minute from playing it what could it be?
just described some of the local shops in AZ. ask them before you even let them touch the equipment you just bought if they have an osciloscope or DD-1 to install it. if they ask what they are LEAVE!!!!!! they will fry your equipment.
Question so I have a ram 1500 it’s a 03 have kickers that is 300 watts whenever bass heads it sounds like shit the bass sounds to deep.. does it make a difference if I purchase a battery from down4 sound.plus purchasing 2 12,s that are 750 watts. Sa series rev.3 12. Want something that would thumb👌but nothing crazy. And I would like to put them in the back of the seats.

Then I put them in my Chrysler 300 properly with waaaay more clean power and tuned with an oscilloscope and what my amp settings were in my other car I was clipping those subs to high heaven. Got it good now, smell is stuck now as I had burnt those voice coils pretty good lmao
Way to often do I hear people say this. Good explanation JP
Have you heard of wiring subs to vertical series parralel
Sir I hope you can help I’m from New Orleans. Right out of the box “the manufacturer box” my subs smell like burnt smell, gassing etc. whatever it is I’m worried if I got messed over and bought used, refurbished or about to blow subs. Thanks
Currently having this problem
Distortion kills speakers MUCH faster than power. I had a dual voice coil 8” sub wired to 2 ohms. The sun was only rated for 150 watts RMS(75 watts per coil). According to the multimeter, peak RMS power going to the sun was just a hair over 500 watts! I played the sun for 9 months with no problem, then I made a video blowing the sun. Once the bass boost was turned up and the volume turned up above a clean signal into clipping, the sub did not even last 30 seconds! That video is on my channel.
It gets good when they start stinking. 😂
Cant wait to see the new version of neo ho great video for all of the new peeps just breaking into the hobby
3:12 Like that?! 🤣🤣
I make mine smell all the time
What if subs were brand new I heard it was the glue?
When they are new and breaking them in they will stink for a while.
Awesome video!!!Best description JP. Oh yeah awsome sunset!!!
So true...I had some kicker and I had the same problem and froze one of my twelve.
Liked and commented at 1:00 in! Well said sir
I just ordered a Sundown X-12 2ohm 1500W subwoofer. Any recommended amplifier for around $200 minimum - $300 maximum?
Get the wolfram c2400 or look into brutal sounds
My subwoofers are stock with stock amps and still smell at low volumes. They are not new either.
Amen!! Words from JP are words from The Car Audio Bible!!!!
Lmao! Up and down like this! Buy all Boss audio and you won't have this problem! 😏 MAJOR SARCASM!!
@@crumblyHawk Top of the line!
Lmao no not boss boss ain't enough power go get a all planet Audio system that thing gonna slap🤣
@@crumblyHawk From clipping? Lmao!
@@marcelllegend8844 lmao!
You posted this while mine were stinky😂
I’ve been having problems with mine having a burning smell I got a 5K bass and 2 evl skarz any help
Is it alright for them to smell like brand new ?
@THELIFEOFPRICE JP ?? I have a question what you think about a Bass Processor Epicenter I use it for all genres of music??
I have had an Epicenter in the past and have one built into my sub amp now. If you use it on music with little to no bass, it is pretty cool what it can do. I personally don't use it with bass heavy music. Your system may be able to take the abuse, but I recommend caution and some moderation unless you're rich and like buying stuff over and over again.
Chris Parra I too would like some feedback on it, I own one but I was told it’s no good by another audio enthusiasts.
@@johnclark3067 I use it for everything I've been having it for 4 years now on my Kicker L7 15s
@@santiagoramirez2348 ye I know but I've been having it for 4 years on my Kicker L7 15s
@@santiagoramirez2348 we needa to find out I hope JP tells me about it
Sometimes people buy new subs and start playing them hard and that makes the smell to cause new subs take about week to break in.
How do u heat glue on magnets to starighting back up?
JP doing the wave!
I have the dB 2715 and put them in a box that had 2 zvx 15 does it matter if the enclosure is wrings because they stink pretty fast
Do they also stink in the break in process?
Hey i had a ? For you. My truck recently got totaled and it had 2 shallow 10's and a 1000 watt amp. Im soon to buy a 2 door dodge truck. And i wanted to know what could be a good loud hard hitting set up for it? As in 2 shallow 12's. I dont know alot about shallow subs and didnt know if you had a recommendation. Got about 3k for an entire sytem
I have a zv5 15 on a taramps 5k, my amp shows the clipping light flash like crazy at higher volume. Also when i first hooked the sub up it started belling like smoke or a wierd smell like a minute from playing it what could it be?
I love car audio🎵 and the bass🔊💚
just described some of the local shops in AZ. ask them before you even let them touch the equipment you just bought if they have an osciloscope or DD-1 to install it. if they ask what they are LEAVE!!!!!! they will fry your equipment.
My Sundown Amp RCA Started Having Issues, Pulse My Subwoofer To A Heartbeat & I Had To Pull Over On The Highway... Because I Turned Off My Head Unit And It Still Continued To Pulse...
Hey man I’m curious is it okay to run let’s say a 1000watt rms sub on a 600 watt rms amp at one ohm.... I’ve always wondered that
Lol only the og’s remember baggedz71
If it stinks and it doesn't blow and you turn the gains down, does it damage the speaker..
I cant afored any of this do you know if a speaker shop would tune it for me
