JP I have a quick question. Is the x6.5v2 recommended for SEALED enclosures. The Sundown website says .15 sealed .3 ported. I have a 2010 avalanche. I want to do 6 sealed under backseat and keep everything functional. I don't believe I have the space for ported because seat brackets. If it is recommended for sealed enclosure I want to pick up 6 to 8 from you. Thanks in advance.

My sub smelled of electrical burn. I turned it off right away. Used a Multimeter to set the gain via formula It was stinking at 55 volts and according to formula I should have been around 33.7 volts..
Ok I have a question that you may have had experience with, say you have a sub or subs who’s specs call for a certain size enclosure and a certain tuning frequency. What kind of effects or problems do you start to run into by increasing cubic feet of the enclosure? What about tuning for a lower frequency? Can there be advantages? Anyway I appreciate your efforts to educate and help people. So many are quick to speak right up these days and tell someone they are wrong. I like to hear how everyone does things, then I can try and use all that info to see what I can come up with.
I play a 40hrz test tone off you tube. Turn volume on radio till door speakers distort Easter to hear in words then I bass boost up to max set crossover to a little higher than what's needed to play the. 40hz tone then the gain I'll eaze it up till it starts to clip. You will hear it then I'll back down till it stops then everything is set turn volume on radio down till words are clear and beat the he'll out of them
I just set up a 12" Vega wired to 1Ω in a ported enclosure hooked up to a Scar RP800. I let it break in a bit for about a week and then yesterday we jammed out for a solid 10 mins then I started smelling the coils. I was sorta surprised. The sub is rated to 1300W peak and then the amp and head unit were only up to 75% power. Am I over powering the sub or am I clipping. The audio sounded spot on, honestly just as good if not better than at low volume. If the amp was clipping then a cap would help with that right? I'm going to wire it down to 4Ω next chance I get.
I don't know what mine is doing get it up to about 31/50 volume which is when the sub actually starts kicking. Its not distorting or anything even when it's at max(50) volume. Its just letting off a smell I would say it smells electrical. Any idea? Normal? It's a Sony shelf stereo, with an 8 inch sub. Always listing with music in HQ.

Does the same go for interior speakers, I got a new amp with more power for my 6x9. Music was good playing for a while. At the end of the song, I started smelling something, and heating turn down went away but came back
I used a dd1 and they still smell. The amp I have is only rated for 1,500 watts rms. I got a fosgate T1500 and I got 2 massive kilox 1000 watts rms each. I’m setting them at a -5 db then a 0db . I can’t figure it out 🙁
I have a 1500-bd wired to a t1 12 inch sub had it for a few days and playing it at a low volume it’s stinking my car up and also seen some smoke come out the box don’t know if the amp is overpowering the sub or what’s really going on could use some advise
Had this happen to my 10 inch skar today!! Was smoking hard out of the port, and was hot to the touch. Wonder if the sub is still good. Freaked me out enough to pull the sub and check the box for fire.
I'd like to add this, some might disagree. Try to listen for distortion on smaller cheaper speakers. When you start to kind of hear the sound getting crappy ( cracking or sounding like a heavy metal guitar) turn the volume back a bit til it sounds cleaner. Then turn your volume to it's lowest setting not 0 as zero should be no sound. At volume 1 Assuming thats your lowest ask yourself does the volume go from silent to kinda loud? If it sounds a bit loud then turn your gains down slightly. By matching your amp gains to both the highest volume an lower volume of your headunit you will most likely avoid any clipping issues. The best way is always using a device, but this should in most cases keep your system safe until it can be checked properly. I've done this for many year's when tuning by ear. Yes it will most likely not give you all the bass you want ,but will provide the headroom to not destroy your investment.

JP, youtube sound quality is the same regardless of video quality now. I actually read up on this a while back when researching modern digital audio formats. Google had figured out that people are able to detect poor audio with extreme ease, and are comparatively ok with shoddy video as long as they can tell what's going on. I get 100% of my music from youtube, but I'm also not participating in audio exhibitions. To recap, you can use 144p for audio in 2019, and it sounds the same as 4K. Enjoy your new knowledge, sire.
I dont think I'd have this problem because I've had my amp gains set with an oscilloscope but would I smell it still even with my subs in the trunk and trunk being separated from the cabin?
Yeah, I noticed a very bad burnt smell coming from my sub that shit was blown I mean I’m pretty surprised it lasted this long. It was a $20 Jensen sub from Walmart. I also did notice some smoke coming out of it when I just said fuck it I’m gonna send it because it was already trashed.
What is the difference between aluminum voice coil and copper wire voice coil I build and customize my own subwoofers I just barely got through customizing a 15 I put a 1 ohm aluminum voice coil and finished my sub so when I went to hook it up I noticed it started stinking pretty bad I got it hooked up to a Hifonics 2400 watt amp and I'm sure I connected and started everything bright right please help me on this and thank you
My son just bought a couple of Sundown 12” SD-4 neo subwoofers. I’ve been doing this for 20 something years and very familiar with subs but this one I havn’t figured out. As long as it’s the recommended sealed enclosure I’m getting a rattle but when playing free air it is fine. The tensil leads are good and so is the spider and surround etc. I checked the dust cap and all good. No cracking on the basket and box had no rattle at all with any other sub. It only does it when in the box. Any ideas or has anyone else had this problem with this sub. I see a couple of comments below with someone having same problem. Any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks for the awesome video. I’ve never ran into that issue neither but I’m not running kicker.
I have 2 kickers CompQ 850 watts RMS at 2 ohm and powered from a Soundigital 2000.1 evo at rated 2000 watts rms at 1ohm and 1100 watts at 2 ohm all cables are JL audio 4 gage..and my subs start to smell like burn and I have turn it down..is my amplifier to much for the subs???
I have a 2500w db driver wdx g2 and its being ran on 250w mtx terminator 251 and its stinking up my whole trunk with the foul odor of a skunk almost. Sub isnt hot nor the amp. What could this smell be none lf my other subs do this
Say if i have a sundown 7.5 k amp and i only want to push my subs 2k rms per sub how woukd i go about doing that w out any tools like a dd1 or anything and also where does the bass knob come into play
Hey JP this is just an honest assessment you're an honest businessman because most companies wouldn't care they want you to blow your stuff so you'll buy more good on you thanks
I get a bad smell, I've got 800 watt rms rated quality Rockford subs and a 800 watt rms pioneer amp, my subs stink at 700 watts peak on music. But then I connect my slim 400 watt rms sealed box and run that at full power no problems, obviously no smell because its sealed but it works fine, also both boxes at 1 ohm. I don't understand how my slim sub can work fine at double the power but my bigger subs stink.
I have a zvx12 d1 in a ported box (2.65cu.ft) 48in port area, 20" long rectangle port. I have a skar RP1500.1 running at 1 ohm and it stinks after 15 min of high volume. I found the sweet spot as far as volume goes to avoid the stink but I thought this set up wouldn't over power the sub. Any ideas to why my sub will smell?
Cd sound quality is the best I never play any thing other than a phone call thru my phone I still use cds or dvds.and my own slowed and mash ups using THE DENON PRIME 4controler wich have the best sound card in a controller
Apple Music has excellent SQ. The best way to enjoy music in a car for audiophiles is a fiio digital audio player with hi res lossless audio but you would need an SQ system to fully enjoy it.
its a button that says bass boost... it boosts a specific octave of bass bandwith usually 6db, 12db, or 18db per that octave, compared to the other frequencies that are also being produced... im no audio engineer tho, so if someone more qualified chimes in to correct me, take their advice.... hope this helps a little tho...
one other thing, not so much in spl car audio, but in sound quality, having all of the frequencies playing at the same volume is the goal.. this is called a flat response.. litterally people will spend up to a million dollars for a pair of speakers, for that flat response lol.. bass boosts will throw a specific frequency range to higher volumes than the rest of the frequencies produced, making it unbalanced.... probably dont really want to use a bass boost, unless the bass seems lacking in comparison to your mids and highs.. however, it can do goofy things to your subwoofer, like clipping, distortion etc if not done correctly.... how to do it correctly is kind of what this video is about.. setting gains properly is a better way of achieving a flat response than boosts and filters etc.... things get way more tricky when you get into passive crossovers... but thats a whole nother topic... a passive crossover is the little box that comes with a component set of speakers.. what it is doing is splitting the frequencies to the specific drivers (woofer and tweeter), and balancing the frequncies to a flat response... your gains and boosts on amplifiers are in the ball park of whats called an active crossover.. the easiest way to understand what an active crossover is, is an equalizer, that can adjust the volume of specific frequencies on the fly, while the audio is playing...
@@Catholic1391 i would say no... the different impedance (ohm) will draw a different wattage, thus changing where that point of clipping is in the volume or gain...
Always play your head unit 75% i use to always play mine at 41/50 then i brought it down to 37 and it never stinks. It will get hot but never stinks so i know I’m somewhere in the save zone of prolonging my sub
$20 multimeter. Find out your amp recommended voltage output. Get a 50hz sound file on a CD or however you can playing thru your headunit with the gain all the way down. Insert multimeter positive & negative into your amp speaker input then slowly increase gain until you reach the recommended voltage. That's your clipping point. JL audio has a more detailed description on RUclips but it's that easy. No more smelly subwoofer.
I bought brand new subs a year ago from Wal-Mart and I only smelt them one day I didn't leave my window cracked and it was 98 degrees. Outside other than that never and don't let your buddy's tell you it's just the new because if it don't smell like that when you pulled it out the box then it shouldn't smell while playing
My experience and how work on car audio esp subwoofers...playing in halfway in first time and let the coil move in 20 or 30 min....D4S👍👍👍👍👍👍,that how i do....different people u know
So I think I understand but I've had this stereo for well over a year nothing has changed all the sudden I turn it up halfway and I can smell stink I don't know sundown essay 12
Everyone else says it’s not that it’s just the glue ? Although I paid a shop 12k for focal & Moscone’ 7krms the sub is only 600rms as it it’s amp but the sub just won’t ever stop smelling ?
That's too funny, smell o meter. But can I ask you a question about what you mentioned on your source of music. I'm sure everybody's cases different but I get the same type of sound clarity from my USB and even certain music from RUclips. But why is the damn radio sound so awful. I've never tried to understand or even research that.
Hey guys, i just bought a DD 712f (1500 rms) and powering with T1500bdcp. I tuned amp to clipping at volume 30. But my dumbass installed the sub (in spec box) and immediately turned it to volume 32 with a bass heavy song for about 5 seconds. Coil started smelling (but not really bad like a blown sub, just enough for me to notice it’s getting hot), so I turn the volume down slowly and let it cool. So basically I over powered sub (because Rockfords are underrated) with dirty clipped power. But I’ve been playing it below volume 30 for a few days now and it seems perfectly fine. Should I worry that i lessened the subwoofers life? Or was it the glue on coil “breaking in”? Thanks you guys
i've been using apple music for at least a year now and it is noticeably better. signal seems stronger, no lack of bass like pandora, everything is crystal clear. plus they have almost any song imaginable at your fingertips for $10 a month.
Could you make like a part 3 when you are talking about sub enclosures for example, What happens if you put a subwoofer in a box that is too small/big.
Price, I have (1) Orion HCCA152 powered by (1) Orion XTR2500.1Dz XTR. I have no equipment to test it. I have my gain set between 1/2 and 3/4. I blew my first coil and Orion sent me a re-cone kit. I put it all back together and it's been about 2 months now. I really only listen to it going back and forth to work (aprox 40 min ea way). I started to smell that smell and turned it off immediately. I turn everything on and my amp goes it to protect mode just about the same time you would hear the speaker kick on (even with no volume). I have hooked up another woofer and it works fine. I hook it back up to my HCCA152 and the amp goes back into protect mode. Why does it keep doing this? I would guess the sub is blown, but i cant figure out why i keep blowing them since I am not even nearly using the full potential of the amp. Seriously, the gain is a pinch over half.... I am debating if it's just the woofer and purchasing the DS18 Hooligan x15.2D instead. What do you think?
im not price but i can say orion amps are extremely powerful . you might not need any gain at all . any bit of gain could be putting distortion into your system.half the gain up can be a quick death sentence for your speaker. as far as your hcca 152 it may be possible that 1 out of your 4 terminals to you voice coils may not be connected ,or not recieving power, like a severed tinsel lead. if you only have 3 terminals on the speaker recieving power it will cause your amp to do crazy things, examine your tinsel leads and terminal connections on the speaker. good luck
@@Catholic1391 yes, its pretty much the same, you can probably add just alittle more gain to the higher ohm load because its drawing less power from your amp
U can use a voltmeter to check watts and ohms..most 1000 watt amps be lucky to do 200-250 watts...if u run it 80% of max it will last forever...and never get hot..never turn anything to the maximum...
Lmfao the amps he sells do more than rated no 1000 watt amp on d4s does less that rated usually will do more than rated lol and yes always max put ur system u jus need clean power an alot of it big amp =big alt
dustin only if u know what you're doing u can max it out..of course the amplifier that he sells will do rated power but most don't..they won't be burning up if they know what you're doing
get some better speakers, cinema subs are far better! SVS PB16 Ultra, McCauley M421, Bassboss Kraken Quad 21, Procella Audio V21, etc.. pair it up with good satelites or cinema gear satelites.. it will rock! Enjoy, responsibly.
It's crazy how clueless sum people are on certain things, it blows my mind.. people have no self control and common sense, then after things blow they find someone else to blame, or the company sucks or my amp was faulty.. people don't hold themselves accountable for there own mistakes.. I guess if they have money to throw away then fine. I work hard for my money and always take very good care of my stuff, and I teach my son the same.. they sell a cheap oscope on ebay for like $30, it's not the best at all but I've used one until I got a nice one
In the DD-1 manual, where it says "Track 3 will ensure maximum sound quality, Track 7 will result in a louder system, Track 5 is a compromise. Your choice.", which do you recommend? I set my gains with a DD-1 and still had stinky subs on certain songs and volume levels.
When you slowly turn your volume higher and higher pay attention to when your subs 'flatten out'. Meaning when the subs no longer get louder. THIS ... for sure is sign of clipping. You're welcome. No charge 😁
I just started playing JL w3 10s and it was like 3 minutes of max volume I thought I smelt fire lol
Just experienced this exactly today
Forget volume 10 I'm going Volume 15 slamin😏👍👍👍
Damn right fuck😂
I make mine stink so I have an excuse to get more powerful subs
If ur subs are stinking ur power supply is probaly not sufficient or ur jus sending clipped signal to ur amp or our of ur amp

It only does it when in the box. Any ideas or has anyone else had this problem with this sub. I see a couple of comments below with someone having same problem. Any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks for the awesome video. I’ve never ran into that issue neither but I’m not running kicker.
Did I ruin my speakers after I smelled that certain smell??? I just drove home from the shop
Is it better to have your stereo eq bass all the way down and turn amp gain up or the other way around
You cant put the smoke back in wires, Can the stink be put back in a speaker? lol
I wonder if i bad head unit can send a bad signal to the amp
I have a 2500w db driver wdx g2 and its being ran on 250w mtx terminator 251 and its stinking up my whole trunk with the foul odor of a skunk almost. Sub isnt hot nor the amp. What could this smell be none lf my other subs do this
Say if i have a sundown 7.5 k amp and i only want to push my subs 2k rms per sub how woukd i go about doing that w out any tools like a dd1 or anything and also where does the bass knob come into play
I remember when i watched this video freaking out about tuning my gains and stinky subs and such. I did well... for a first timer I truly did well.
Hey JP this is just an honest assessment you're an honest businessman because most companies wouldn't care they want you to blow your stuff so you'll buy more good on you thanks
I got a question my amp and my subs are getting hot ? I have 2 evl skars 12 and 2000 skar rp amp nothing big
If I have 2 12zvx skar, can I use 2 different amplifiers to power each, I have 1 hifonics brx 2000w and 1 hifonics brx 25000w , is this possible??
You should do a video playing the song the illest by far east movement hardest hit ever with my jack hammers
They also stink because they know you like or hate the smell.
Can you please do a demo on skar 12 sdr thanks jp
Chad Gardee save up more money an get an EVL. You will thank me.
Save up more money and leave skar and go to sundown . You’ll thank me .
Cd sound quality is the best I never play any thing other than a phone call thru my phone I still use cds or dvds.and my own slowed and mash ups using THE DENON PRIME 4controler wich have the best sound card in a controller
So what music app has the best sound quality if u don't mind me asking an what would u recommend to use
Don't use an app. Go to basshead music websites like DJ Rusticals to download your favorite bass music in its highest quality.
Rite on brother thanks for the info will do
Apple Music has excellent SQ. The best way to enjoy music in a car for audiophiles is a fiio digital audio player with hi res lossless audio but you would need an SQ system to fully enjoy it.
What is the bass boost?
its a button that says bass boost... it boosts a specific octave of bass bandwith usually 6db, 12db, or 18db per that octave, compared to the other frequencies that are also being produced... im no audio engineer tho, so if someone more qualified chimes in to correct me, take their advice.... hope this helps a little tho...
one other thing, not so much in spl car audio, but in sound quality, having all of the frequencies playing at the same volume is the goal.. this is called a flat response.. litterally people will spend up to a million dollars for a pair of speakers, for that flat response lol.. bass boosts will throw a specific frequency range to higher volumes than the rest of the frequencies produced, making it unbalanced.... probably dont really want to use a bass boost, unless the bass seems lacking in comparison to your mids and highs.. however, it can do goofy things to your subwoofer, like clipping, distortion etc if not done correctly.... how to do it correctly is kind of what this video is about.. setting gains properly is a better way of achieving a flat response than boosts and filters etc.... things get way more tricky when you get into passive crossovers... but thats a whole nother topic... a passive crossover is the little box that comes with a component set of speakers.. what it is doing is splitting the frequencies to the specific drivers (woofer and tweeter), and balancing the frequncies to a flat response... your gains and boosts on amplifiers are in the ball park of whats called an active crossover.. the easiest way to understand what an active crossover is, is an equalizer, that can adjust the volume of specific frequencies on the fly, while the audio is playing...

Ok I have a question, I set my gain with the SMD DD 1 just below clip, is that setting on the gain the same for 1 ohm and 2 ohm subwoofers?
@@Catholic1391 i would say no... the different impedance (ohm) will draw a different wattage, thus changing where that point of clipping is in the volume or gain...
How do you fix this?!???
I use a speaker with a non polarized capacitor method
We need a part 3!
Always play your head unit 75% i use to always play mine at 41/50 then i brought it down to 37 and it never stinks. It will get hot but never stinks so i know I’m somewhere in the save zone of prolonging my sub
you can set gains with a multimeter
$20 multimeter. Find out your amp recommended voltage output. Get a 50hz sound file on a CD or however you can playing thru your headunit with the gain all the way down. Insert multimeter positive & negative into your amp speaker input then slowly increase gain until you reach the recommended voltage. That's your clipping point. JL audio has a more detailed description on RUclips but it's that easy. No more smelly subwoofer.
Ok I have a question, I set my gain with the SMD DD 1 just below clip, is that setting on the gain the same for 1 ohm and 2 ohm subwoofers?
Hello.. what is clipping!!!!!??????
Everyone else says it’s not that it’s just the glue ? Although I paid a shop 12k for focal & Moscone’ 7krms the sub is only 600rms as it it’s amp but the sub just won’t ever stop smelling ?
That's too funny, smell o meter. But can I ask you a question about what you mentioned on your source of music. I'm sure everybody's cases different but I get the same type of sound clarity from my USB and even certain music from RUclips. But why is the damn radio sound so awful. I've never tried to understand or even research that.
What's a good quality music source???????????????????
Hows pandora or apple music for a good sound quality source wt u think
i've been using apple music for at least a year now and it is noticeably better. signal seems stronger, no lack of bass like pandora, everything is crystal clear. plus they have almost any song imaginable at your fingertips for $10 a month.
Use a piezo tweeter to set the gains for 2 bucks
How?
What's a dd 1?
Could you make like a part 3 when you are talking about sub enclosures for example, What happens if you put a subwoofer in a box that is too small/big.
Emf audio has videos on that topic.
2 Rockville 12s 10s before I smelt somthing
You are the best jp
Price,
I have (1) Orion HCCA152 powered by (1) Orion XTR2500.1Dz XTR.

360p is video pixel related, not audio. file ....320kbps can still be achieved if video resolutions are low....
Check out K rino 4 piece
Is it normal for smells during break in?
yes, but if it does start to stink always kick it down a notch just to be on the safe side
I’ve got the Logitech Z625 and I’ve had them for about 3 months, for some reason even at low volume, they still smell
get some better speakers, cinema subs are far better! SVS PB16 Ultra, McCauley M421, Bassboss Kraken Quad 21, Procella Audio V21, etc.. pair it up with good satelites or cinema gear satelites.. it will rock! Enjoy, responsibly.
How does everyone run multi amps off one remote wire that is safe as in say 2-8 ??????????
Ive never ran more than two amps in a vehicle before but i would imagine you would use some type of distribution block
@@Hawgdawgman im finding out a 12v relay is best so far
THELIFEOFPRICE JP I Rather play my Subwoofers at Volume 7 🔊🔊🔊
When it’s stinking is like a hair dryer’s burning out mate it’s common since
It's crazy how clueless sum people are on certain things, it blows my mind.. people have no self control and common sense, then after things blow they find someone else to blame, or the company sucks or my amp was faulty.. people don't hold themselves accountable for there own mistakes.. I guess if they have money to throw away then fine. I work hard for my money and always take very good care of my stuff, and I teach my son the same.. they sell a cheap oscope on ebay for like $30, it's not the best at all but I've used one until I got a nice one
What if it’s not even on
My speaker was smokiiiiing! Mask
In the DD-1 manual, where it says "Track 3 will ensure maximum sound quality, Track 7 will result in a louder system, Track 5 is a compromise. Your choice.", which do you recommend? I set my gains with a DD-1 and still had stinky subs on certain songs and volume levels.
Danny Jobin I used -10 and my subs was smelly after about 15 minutes. On -5 never had a smell or anything
Blows my mind how people can’t spend $149 for a DD1 to protect their investment of hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
Im broke
I spent it all on the system dammit 😂
