- If a car subwoofer is blown, there may be scratching noises, but a subwoofer that won't push down has definitely gone bad. Find out how to use a digital voltmeter to test the positive and negative terminals of a subwoofer with help from the manager of a car audio store in this free video on car audio and subwoofers.

for this to work, make sure you are in an environment with no air...
hahaha
+R3MIX MODZ Go to moon to check weather the woofer is blown xD
no air that can disrupt the cone movement duh
R3MIX MODZ hi
R3MIX MODZ so go to space
That is for the case of an instalation in a space station or stuff.
I've come across a few of this gentleman's video's today and have found him to be extremely insightful.
This is one of the first videos ive seen where its to the point. No b.s about other things or a 3 minute intro on begging for likes or subscribes.
Excellent video. Clear, thorough, and to the point.
"Do not test where there is air" What he meant to say was .. "It is best to test the speakers in the vacuum of space." :)
Where there is no sound.
sounds legit though... also never mentioned if you could test it under water. Just saying... lol
Wow this video is from 2009 and its 720p you don't see that everyday
Mouze Lol avatar was in 720p and 3D
worst comparison ever
BasicallyImHigh Avatar was a professional movie not a RUclips video lol
R.I.P. he probably has jaundice? I’am not trying to hate but his hands are shaking so badly how can you not notice it. That’s a far tell sing that he haz a drinking problem/Alcoholic.
Derman Derman jaundice causes a yellowish tint to the skin also the eyes turn noticeably yellow. he may have Parkinson's, people can live a normal length life with it. But it's most likely essential tremor... it's the most common thing to cause a shake, people usually confuse it with being Parkinson's.
Thank you sir, this video was very helpful to me.
YOU can tell this guy is a bad ass, If you knew what was wrong and you were right he'd still tell you your wrong he's such a bad ass.
Had a good laugh at your comment lol
lol this comment is hilarious! he's a professional con artist.
Keenan Erby the guy sells audiovox... enough said.
Short and straight to the point. Nice video
1:30 make sure the voltmeter is set to ohms btw
if so many people want to ridicule the video....why would you even take the time to watch it when you know what its about.....
any ohm but not above 4ohm! or your amp will short because of lack of resistance. 4ohm will make your woofer sound the full sound and 2ohm won't be that loud. but if you want your thing to last longer then i prefer you'd install an 2ohm.
@hockeyforlife23 you can buy it in every electronics shop. Ask for a "MultiTester", many times is cheaper to buy the multitester than the ohmnimeter.
It's likely that this remote or trigger wire is connected to a constant 5v line. (This line stays on even when car is turned off) what you may want to do is take a look at your car and splice the trigger wire to something that turns off when the car is off. So something like say your plate lights or in some cases the deck may have a dedicated trigger line out from it.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for your help. I have recently taken the sub out of the enclosure and I could not find anything. I then rebuilt the enclosure as there was some slight damage to the carpet. I have never experience this rattling noise like this before at low volumes. Very strange. Thanks again
often times its just a worn out or shifted spider causing an issue, first of all don't deal with subwoofers that have a full diameter dust cap, this design is just to keep the buyers from removing the dust cap and getting into the pole area for re gapping the voice coil
"Make sure you arn't in an enviroment where there is air" 1:41 Sorry I just had to point that out.
I NOAH MANN you didn’t listen to everything he said
@@JacobEcret I know it was just so funny I hit pause before I continued.
He meant 'wind' when he said air; because any slight movement on the cone's surface will change the OHM reading
That's why I tested my speakers outside of the environment.
Yeah so basically test out in space
ive had mine for over 6 months and crank them hard all the time. they are still perfect
Great information without a bunch of filler. This is easily one of the best produced RUclips videos out there. 👍
best is pushing it
extra step, if your sub isn't producing sound and is still wired in powered on .just gently press in on the cone. if it responds momentarily scratchy . Your voice coil has slipped off the former. these in most cases can be repaired. and this is a sign of over powering and over heating. or it's just blown.seen allot but rarely mentioned.
You just made me test my old inphase 1200 watt sub. Reads bang on 4 holms 🙂 pity I don't know anything about amps. Cos it's amp just blow its fuse straight away
A Volt Meter is going to test the DC resistance. Speakers specs are AC. If you cheek with an Impedance Meter you will get 4 Ohms at 1000 hrz
Rock on man.
@Sandfire77 your amp is over heating, when it over heats it shuts off to cool down, 300 watts is not enough to puch kicker comp 12 no matter how many watts it says "and even though the amp may say 300W it might nit be a true 300. i have Rockford Fosgate 850 w amp pushing 2 kicker comps and it over heats alot
To the point and very easy to understand great videos
Hey mam Thanx fer the info on the fluctuation on the spider ... That's a nice little trick if your ever buyin a used sub .... Later
Well I have a blown 10 inch sub what should I do repair it or replace it and if I repair it how do I do so
Interesting, I have an older set of Orion XTR Series 2 12's (from the mid 90's old school) and they both measure 6.0 - 6.1 ohms on my multimeter yet they're rated @ 4ohms.
Just to verify it wasn't my multimeter's fault I tested a Pioneer 12" sub and it measures 4.1ohms (4ohm rating).
if u need to check the sub and dont want to take it out just take a double a battery and make contact on the pos and neg, if the subs work they will make a small bass note. good if u dont have a volt meter and need a quick trouble shoot if u arnt getting power from amp.
I don't think they notice that the chair he is sitting in is a wheelchair.
Jersey Piney oh shit I didn't notice that....
I did.
OG status 5 star general 💂🎖️
I did notice he's very shakey. Didn't notice the wheelchair.
Lol
Don't forget the tap test. If you tap the cone and hear a fuzzy rattling or scratching it may have a coil broken free of the bobbin. You may not hear that just moving the cone in and out.
How do you fix it
boy that kid sure loves displaying his unpacking skills.
This was super helpful thank you 🙌🙌🙌
Good tutorial - thanks for making it. Going to test my sub now!
you hooked the postive lead into the negative and negative into the positive when you hooked it up to DMM btw
Good video, thanks for posting! I appreciate the help.
im going to get two pioneer ts-w3002 they come in 2 or 4 and i was going to power them on a separate battery with two alpine 1000 watt rms monoblock amps the subs are dual two ohm and dual voice coil in a dual custom ported box tuned to 33 hz they need 1.2 ft of space for each
1. singel 10" but the amp provides power for 5 satellite speakers as well
2. ported
3. dunno its a tv/computer system and u cant change
4. I have all settings at default
but i think the amp is damaged in some way
i had a 18" acendant audio.. i tried to push down on it.. it wouldnt budge.. and it was NEW!!!
I couldn't hear anything because my subwoofer was being fixed while this video was going!
Lmaaaaao
Captions
his voice wasnt thaaaaaat deep
You’re not suppose to hear voices through your subwoofer. If you do then your crossover is bad
Solid info, great video. Thanks Rich.
He could be a great surgeon with those steady hands of his.
also, you can just connect a 9V battery to the + and -. if it works, the subwoofer will make a little "pop", and move a little bit :-)
@BeAILsTaR13 and no, the reading will not change since he is measuring resistance
@kickerl7dakota i once had a whistling sound comming from a kicker cvr 12 that i had in a qlogic box. The box actually had a ver small leak in it that caused the noise. Also, it can also be engine noise from a bad ground. If u can, check where ur ground is and reposition it to see if it fixes it. If not see if u can hear any sounds comming directly from the box, cuz that means ur box has a small leak/hole.
You will smell it too, you will know! Kinda cool tho something i didnt even know. Takes the guess work outta it, or if your buying used subs as well?
If you can't push down on the sub, that doesn't necessarily mean it's blown, it simply means that it has a stiff suspension. Like a Fi BTL :)
Quick and clear guide
Dam i gotta go look at some subs that I potentially might buy. So your telling me i have to go to space to check em 🤣😂jk good video
good choice in subs for a demo! I've got a 10" kicker solobaric L5 and a kicker L5 custom myself
Kickers suck
If you are wondering what brands of subs to buy I recommend The JBL pb8
Im thinking something went wrong with my wiring then or unless my turn knob is bad cause my 12s arent kicking anymore but they also aren't blown either given what this guy stated.
my akia 15' blew up 2 days after i bought it at a party gig i had! $350 sub fml
Yes sir the best way to test a sub!!
well my memphis 12 got locked up to where i couldnt push it in; it was the magenet; all i had to do was turn it a little bit and it works now :)
@ddustbuster
If you listen carefully, he said "In an environment where there's air that can make the cone move."
rich richards is the most store manager like name in the world lmao
You can also use a AA battery too. Really just to see if the sub will move up or down....
they are 600 rms, and the hifonics amp, at 2 ohms is getting about 900 watss rms, and the bass is all the way and negative 8! there wired together at 2 ohms, so i dont see any problems, you know what imean? but thanks for the reply, and ill check it out, i am already subscribed too :)
hello my sub is stuck(wont move up and down) but when i put a multimeter on it its a steady 3.2 ohms dosent move at all could you please help me thanks
@pimpfluid69 means if your hand or leg or so is paralyzed you can't move it. some ppl are paralyzed from neck all the way down to toes, so onlything they can move is their mouth or so :p
Rich Richards lol that’s awesome
thank you Michael j fox
@mi2oahn Most likely, yes. If it is two 4 ohm coils, then the lowest reading you should get is 2 ohms, give or take a few percent.
@antera77 "... suggests you think DC quantities are polarized."
Correction: "…suggests you think resistance of the subwoofer is polarized."
Also on speaker subwoofer on a Bluetooth speaker?
negative on the negative positive on the positive, obviously, great, I see 4 locations each where there's a positive and negative, where exactly do I have the dial set at? you couldn't show exactly where u gott the terminals touching
Are the speaker good?
Hi! I saw that you are an expert on car audio. I have installed a Pioneer AVH X2800-BS in my 2000 Nissan Pathfinder w/ the Bose system. I did install the Scosche CNN02 adapter as well. I had it set up and it was sounding good, but I lost sound in all four speakers (first the front and then the rear) after about 30mins of use. A buzzing noise coming from under the front right fender started to occur once the sound was lost. I am wondering what is going on! Thanks
AznBassAngler probably just the wiring having bad connections. was the buzzing more like a loud speaker buzz ?
Hello what if you only here the twister and the woofer does nothing? What can it mean?
ithe negative and positive wire got attach and there is no sounds now my subwoofer. can some one please advise if i need to chahages it or repair it? im on budget now ?
or hook wires too the terminals get a 9v battery touch the terminals it its blown it won't pop
so im buying a kicker 12 l5 single square but it don't come with a box dose the box matter or can i buy any box? please respond
how are you at soldering those little wires together? My hands shake enough to piss me off when I'm trying to solder but I think that was years of using impact guns and such at my work.
@kickerl7dakota It may be very likely harmless outside noise from line in of radio. try to see if you still hear it after disconnecting the inputs from the amp.
@gtrfurby What!! JL Audio is the best when it comes to Sound quality. I never heard of Audiovox.
Scratching sound would be from the voice coil rubbing against the side.
try for 12-16sq inches of port per cube. you cant tune it too low without having a bigger box because the port area will not be high enough
I'm getting a noise that sounds like something is inside it bouncing around very rapidly. Should I upgrade?
so youre going to run an amp per sub? if that is the case, and your amps are one ohm stable, get the dual 2ohm subs and wire them down to one ohm. if the amps arent one ohm stable, you gotta get the dual 4 and wire them down to 2 ohms.
iknew this since i was 8 but still good to hear it
i have 2 kicker L7 but one of the sub when i play them a noise comes from the inside of the subwoofers is that blow or is there something wrong with the coil?? its dual 2 ohm
@Seacaboose1
that's normal if its in a sealed box
Mine stayed popped out pushed it back in then no noise guess it popped right ?
always on the phone?
Hello, where can i buy the Custom Trim Finishing Surround Subwoofer 10 of them? I can't find them anywhere online, and I need them for Pioneer 10" subwoofers,Thank you all for all the information
Thanks for the tip!
I did exactly what you've shown. What does it mean when the rated 4 Ohms subwoofer reading is only at 1.3 - 1.5 on the reading? Does that mean it's pretty much dead or something?
I did a test on the 2nd sub and that one seems normal; rated at 3.9.
2ohm. is it a single 2ohm voicecoil? dual 2 ohm? whats the amps power rating @ 2 ohm.
i got a blaupunkt pro comp driver but it doesn't show the watts, ohms, how can i find that out
hey i wanna ask, if my sub onli smell onli once, does tat mean it is blown or jus overheating?
one of mys subs blew a voice coil and the other is reading 2.9 ohms on each voice coil steady when its 4 ohm DVC... is this half blown ??? is it still useable? it was hooked up wrong before..only 1 vc was being used..
Great vid Brother ~MrSKSkill
My ''15'' is blown 2 pieces after last night :(
Dubstep and trap, does its work xD
And after 6 years i assume you bought another one :D
I have 2 12inch kickers cvr. They're in an enclosed box. I have a Lexus gs 300. For some reason I think I had a better bass in a Chevy blazer with each kicker in a non enclosed box. WHY IS THAT??
Hey I was driving on the freeway yesterday and my sub was bumpin.... then around likr7 I tryed playin it and it stoped working my amp is a sony 45wx2 and my sub is a sony xplod but I can't tell why its not working ... can you help?
I have a 2ohm L7 15inch q class and it started to smoke today. Still works and seems fine. Just a lot of smoke and no clue where it came from other than the coil. So if the smoke happened does it mean it’s ruined? Even tho it still seems like it works fine??
@eHow .. Wat if im pushing if buts wen i push down to hard it has a scratching sound.. but its not stiff at all & there moving perfectly.
Great video thanks!
my vibe slick makes a farting noise when the bass beats hit when turned up. the speaker on the other channel is ok though. the farting one isnt solidly mounted though. Its sitting but the plastic clips have partially broken. Will a slightly loose fit on my parcel shelf really cause this or would you say its being overpowered? Says 80wrms max. My amp is infinity 150w per channel.
Of course the impedance of the speaker is going to be different than the DC resistance.
Right on, dude, even in 2022 :-D
