that quadro 600 might actually run OGL stuff well as those quadro drivers are something else in OGL games (think starsector, og minecraft, or even some Quake wars for period correctness)

First of all, I'm so glad you're back!
Second, I'd like to see you try to overclock both 210 to theyr max and see if they give similar results and temps. That would be a nice way to show how build quality and silicon lottery works.

The engineering sample CPU most definitely will not work in any oem motherboard, you will need a board by Asus/Gigabyte/MSi/etc with preferably a pre-release BIOS, but some boards will run an ES chip with a retail bios, however its a total crap shoot and there's no guarantees.

That Radeon 8500 can be useful for a retro build and it has a feature that was unique to that generation called Trueform if I remember right. Also that 9700 is worth a bit of change between retro gamers as well those who are in the PPC Mac scene, they run kinda hot so you'll need to be sure about the temps. If you ever come across a 9800 XT then you hit the jackpot given how rare they are these days.

    • @ArtemisKitty
      @ArtemisKitty 2 года назад +2

@@somehow_not_helpfulATcrap Oh, no the 9800 is an ATI. That's the point where I personally switched over from ATI to Nvidia. Sorry, didn't mean to confuse that with the 9800GT Nvidia cards. Forgot about them using the same numbers, lol. Much confusion. Those were much later, actually. My ATI was already ancient at that point, and the Nvidia 200 series were the newest, best ones for PC gaming. It was also a whole new PC build, of course, switching from AGP to PCIE based graphics and from an AMD CPU rig to an Intel based system. Sorry for the confusion there! (Basically I'd been sitting on an old PC until I could afford to make a new one, but it was becoming a dinosaur already at that point. Again, sorry for not being more specific. It's an old 256MB ATI card I have, haha.)

I actually bought yesterday a Quadro 600 for 10 bucks with a low profile bracket for my 1st gen i3 HP SFF PC and it worked well on Windows 10 and I could even squeeze out a bit of extra performance by overclocking it, Also its fan is quiet and runs at 30% most of the time, I'd say it is better than a GT 710 since it has 128bit memory bus and 50% higher memory bandwidth, For example in GTA 5 you could run it at 720p normal with 35-45FPS (OC'ed tho), Only limitation is the 1GB of VRAM but it does not matter since the GPU isn't that powerful to begin with.

I had a radeon 9600 pro back in the day. It was so bottlenecked by the Pentium 4 2.4 single-thread that it barely performed any better than the OEM FX 5200 the Dimension shipped with. I didn't realize how decent the 9600 was until I much later on hooked it up to an Athlon system.

The Radeon looks more like a 9500 256bit version. This design comes originaly from the Radeon 9700/ 9700 Pro (8 Rops). If this Model has only 4 Rops activated (you can chack it in rivatuner), it`s a Radeon 9500. The 256 bit variants was used in Radeon 9500(4 Rops) , 9500 Pro (8 Rops), 9700 non Pro and 9700 Pro ( All 8 Rops). But some models was labeld as the 9600 Pro with the "old" R300 chip, but in most cases with 64 MB 128 bit ram, and not 128 MB 256 bit, looks like a very rare variant... If you luky, you can to try activate the othe 4 Rops in Rivatuner, or over Omega drivers without graphics issues... ^^

@10:28 you say 9700 Pro but the tag on the screen says 9600 Pro, definitely cant be a 9600 series as they did not have the extra 4 pin power header. Its looks like a 9700 series but they came in 3 flavors - the lowest clocked one was the 9700 TX then the 9700 then the 9700 Pro and they all had the same 4 pin power header. Since you said it has Infineon memory the only version of the 9700 I have seen with that brand is the 9700 TX which is an OEM Dell card. If the memory on it is ends in -3.6 its probably a TX card which factory clocked would be 263/263

So, a guy on eBay is selling a bunch of S3 graphics cards that are engineering samples, or at least used in house. He had 3 cards for sale for an OK price and I bought them all. 1x 530 GT and 2x S27. Like a day later he listed a bunch more cards at $299+. Anyways, a lot of those cards have popped caps and such. One of my S27s does not display, but appears to power on. I don't see anything wrong with it. It's caps are not leaking or bulging. Should I just assume it's dead? I don't really want to oven a engineering sampleish card.

It just occurred to me that the 2000s are starting to be considered properly retro. Does this mean I'm getting old?
I'm thinking a 2004 style Windows XP box. One of those big slab sided machines from the time with the custom flaps over dual optical drives (because DVD-RW drives were expensive and do they'd have a read only drive for DVD, CD, and so forth and a CD-RW drive underneath), usually in grey or possibly light blue to match the XP colour scheme (the ubiquitous black not really being in vogue).
Though Celeron D systems need not apply. That was an afterbirth of a CPU and the hell of having to use one in an office box at work is real.

The AGP cards are virtually worthless because it isn't possible to buy a motherboard worthwhile to put them in, namely a LGA775 motherboard that can take up to a 3GHz quad core. Chances are the only board you can get to run them will be a single core socket 478. I know this as I have one, I also have a Leadtek A7600GT AGP card which many a long year ago cost $400 and currently sell equivalent cards on aliexpress for 100 - 160 AUD, which are laughably not worth buying either, as you can buy much much better hardware for that.

Great vid and an even greater box :D Can't wait for an eventual Quadro K600 video since its still kinda supported and might offer some surprising performance if properly unlocked. I m in a hunt for a dodgy driver/vbios for my K620 which will unshackle its glorious Maxwell goodness

Going off what you have said, the Quadro k620 in my opinion is the best GPU right now for sticking in a cheap OEM PC on a budget. Graphics performance similar to the Vega 3/8/11 in Ryzen APUs and the GT 1030 but they're about $35 on eBay since no one knows about them. Could easily build a sub $100 gaming PC with a Core 2 Quad Q9550 and one of these that does OK. (Card is an underclocked GTX 650 but still has driver support.)

No, isn't an underclocked Kepler GTX 650, it's still better.
K620 has a Maxwell chip (despite the K in its name), its equivalent is GTX 745, a neutered GTX 750 with only 384 Cuda Cores and DDR3 VRAM . That's the reason it still has driver support.
Its performance is, obviously, lower than GT 1030 which also has 384 CC but a newer Pascal chip and a faster DDR5 VRAM.
Anyway, a very good card for SFF machines with limited space inside and weak PSU.
Mine is running flawlessly into a Q8300 SFF machine.

I can confirm that that is in fact a Lenovo OEM GT 310. I was given a SFF Lenovo with one inside by default. They run like shit so have fun with that Hamish! 😂

    Straight away 1:00 I thought you'd just been "had" there. A GT210... 😅
But then you brought out the Quadro. Those are usually wicked cards 😯
Often they are to video cards what Xeons are to processors, minus the very accessible driver support 👍😜
Loved seeing C&C Generals again in the benchmarks. And it would be interesting to see a nice AGP build. Proper retro, like with that cool Radeon 9600 PRO. Nice one.
