      Seems to have worked a lot better because you know what you're getting (a $65-$85 full set of keycaps), you just don't know what colorway. However idobao doing stuff like this, sending stuff like a pack of 20pc mismatched switches in a mystery box seems so scummy.
      I got 2 of the cannonkeys mystery boxes, got 2 full sets of keycaps, and am happy. 🙂

  • @Junl09

    This is depressing. I almost pulled the trigger on Idobao's mystery boxes too. It's understandable that vendors may want to get rid of unwanted stocks this way, but the ones I have seen usually guarantees that the randomly selected products matches or exceeds the asking price.
    If people want to gamble on keyboard stuff, I would recommend Novelkey's mystery switch pack if they ever bring that back. The worst thing I ever received from that was a pack of 90 Kailh Box Pinks for around $13.
    PS: That last Chinese keycap set is some nationalist slogans that Google Translate did get mostly right on the space bar, not so much on the enter key. It roughly means 'China won't accept this'. I'm not confident enough to translate that one correctly.

    • @SodawarsGaming
      @SodawarsGaming Год назад +13

      Yeah the mystery switch sets you at least know you're getting a full set of switches. They might be super weird or kinda bad but the point there is more to get people to try some switches that might not be in their usual wheelhouse. I kinda wanna do a build someday and use a mystery pack for the switches, just for the sheer fun of having to use whatever shows up, even if that's box jades or something equally obnoxious.
      If Idobao had just gone and done a $15 or $20 keycap set mystery box, I think that would be fun, even if most of the sets are as bad as the ones shown here. It's just when they claim they contain keyboards and other nice stuff rather than cheap shit they'd be throwing out otherwise that I hate it. I do Premier Guitar's mystery stocking every Christmas and while I've never gotten anything really good in it, knowing up front that 99% of the time it's just going to be cheap promotional stuff from their advertisers makes it fun for me, because it means even when I get something like a white beanie with a baseball cap brim and a Gibson logo on it (which is a real thing a bunch of us got this year, and it is exactly as ugly as it sounds!), it's just funny and not insulting.

The key differences being A.) you knew exactly how many switches you'd be getting (and also that they were switches and not, say, party-favor keycaps), B.) the worst switches they had on hand were at least decent for the price of the packs, most retailed for significantly more C.) the price was objectively fair and consumer-friendly, and most important to me, D.) they were completely on-the-level about what you were getting into and what you could expect. I bought a ton of their mystery packs and always felt it was worth it - this whole thing is another story. It's like video-game loot-boxes in real life.

    The only mystery box I ever bought was from e3d who makes 3d printer nozzles and extruders (e3d is a British company and who all the Chinese knockoff companies copy) and it was clear it was e3d getting rid of old stock. However, what differed it from thistye of mystery box is they guaranteed a full extruder (everything you would need) and also required you to select a voltage and filament diameter to ensure the box they sent would be compatible with your printer.
    Not all mystery boxes are a scam, but most are.

    There was a time when I subbed to/bought a few mystery boxes back in the day. I subbed to the Marvel/Pop Funko one for a little over a year, got some cool shirts and Pop figures that I enjoy (the first box had a really nice hulkbuster one that was super high quality and I somehow got a second one of that box free, so I sold the second hulkbuster for like twice the cost of the first box, so it wasn't so bad). And I got a few loot crates for wrestling and a few comic con specific ones. Those kind of crates I always found generally worth it since they cost of just the t-shirt and the Pop figure or whatever "big" item they had in the loot crates would usually cost more than the cost of the box, and everything else was just bonus. A few were really nice, some were pretty trash, but I only really stopped because I was starting to get way too many t-shirts and Pop figures and was running out of room for them.
    All that being said, yeah, any type of mystery box that doesn't have a general guarantee of what types of items you're getting is almost certainly always going to be a scam. Like sure some of the ones I got weren't actually worth the "guaranteed value of at least $x" amount that they always advertised because half of the stuff was things I would never actually buy or even really want, but the "big" items were always "worth" more than I would spend on the boxes, in terms of how much it would cost me to buy those same items (or their closest approximation available) elsewhere. Something that is listed as actually random is probably only going to be actually worth the cost you spent a fraction of a fraction of the time.
