  • In October 2017, rock legend Tom Petty passed away, following his reunion tour with the Heartbreakers. His health had taken a turn in the last year of his life, as a hip injury led to other complications, but he was dedicated to making sure his fans got a great tour regardless. A few of his problems manifested on stage, especially at the end of the tour, but for the most part, fans who saw his show in the last 12 months of his life got the same Tom Petty they knew and loved. Here’s what the final 12 months of Tom Petty’s life were really like.

      @J.E.H Yes, and he took on that responsibility. You're implying what exactly? I really want to know. The over-riding point is that he didn't go out like Belushi Joplin Morrison etc, If you think people are trying to turn him into a saint, he would be the first to recoil from that perception. He was a decent man with personal demons like the rest of us and earned the respect shown him in spades.

    I mourned his passing...hard. Family and friends scoffed at me, but I loved his music. I saw him live for the first time in Tampa, FL in May 2017. Something told me it would be the last time I'd get to see him. I couldn't afford the ticket. I was on a Facebook Group that supported his music and a stranger SENT me two tickets free of charge. How awesome is that?!

      It was like the universe conspired to bring you to that show. Very cool! It happened to me once too at a show for the rolling stones. I was sad there was no more tickets and was walking to my car when some random person handed me a 400 dollar ticket! I hugged him and ran to the entrance. I cried when I saw them finally. But Tom, sweet tom. I too took his death VERY hard. He was such a wonderful soul. His music changed my life.

      Christina Stanley I had followed Tom for 40+ years. Saw him 14-15 times (Twice front row, center...awesome). My friends & family knew how much I loved him. I got so many calls the day he died, you would have thought I knew him personally. It shredded me. I cried as though I had lost a great friend. Ironically enough, my sister, who didn’t share my same passion is best friends with the woman who started seeing one of the Heartbreakers and they are still together. Because of that, I was blessed to receive the favors they handed out at Tom’s private memorial. They included a Nil Desperandum shirt, thumb drive of the Nil Desperandum hand-picked songs, and the memorial booklet. I absolutely treasure these items. To this day, I still tear up when I hear certain songs. There are just hundreds of great songs! I’ll miss him forever 💔☮️

    In other words, Tom Petty was without one of the toughest SOBs in all of music and his passion for performing carried him until the bitter end when he was unable to go anymore. Regardless of what he was going through, his passion and love for his fans and the music sustained him through even the worst of his dying days and that is the legacy and life that we will forever remember. RIP Tom Petty, we will never forget you.

      evelyn baron - You completely misunderstood my comment. He started the tour with a cracked hip and by the end it was a full fracture. He should haven never gone but didn’t want to disappoint the fans. He was using all the drugs that ended up killing him to manage the pain until he could get a hip replacement. No tour, no broken hip, no drugs. Get it?
      TP never toured hockey rinks! By the way his family in coordination with Tench and Campbell have finished the Wildflower album and it’s due out soon.

An overdose based on over medication through pain and tiredness nothing more.

      I couldn’t possibly relate to this any more. As a person who has loved music more than anything in life from the time I was a toddler, through the years seeing artists that I love pass away is always a knife right to my heart. But no artists death was (and is) more painful for me than Tom Petty’s. He was simply one of the greatest songwriters that ever lived, and I would argue, and I truly mean this...that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are the greatest American band of all time. If you go back to the beginning and follow it right up to the end, the amount of great songs in their catalog is staggering. And taking their longevity into account knowing that they never became one of those once great bands that stop producing great material. Their last album “Hypnotic Eye” is excellent, as are the Mudcrutch albums. Tom wasn’t supposed to go out like that. It’s just not ever going to be right. But on a happy note, my favorite Petty album has always been “Wildflowers”, and I’ve waiting for years to hear all the unreleased material from those sessions. And we are finally about to get it. RIP✌️

    • @evelynbaron2004
      @evelynbaron2004 3 года назад

      No-one except Stan Lynch ever accused him of being stone cold anything - driven certainly. And in his own words 'I'm not always a summer breeze:. This channel is obviously about celebrity and here I am participating in the circus with misgivings. My sister knows everybody, part of what she does for a living and it's not a lot of fun being in the public gaze like that; one painful poignant memory recounted by his biographer Warren Zane was meeting him for dinner at a restaurant and there he was hiding in the bushes until it was time to run the gauntlet into the place. I couldn't live like that. So he starts out an abused child with a violent father whom he ultimately forgives; turns anger into ambition; finds solace in music, almost gets killed in '78 by rabid fans and again in the '80s when some nutter burns his house down; would you trade places? Many testimonials from people deeply affected by his music are inspiring but how many times have I read some idiotic comment from some woman or other in love with a photograph of him when young. Even now that he's dead. Vr scary.

      Somewhat piggybacking and maybe not fair to compare. While in the military I had a very good friend who was a captain and would not cover for a general who illegally transferred funds from a critical need to "base beautification". He called the general out to the absolute threat of his military career. That song had just charted. Every time I hear of it I think of my good friend. Miss TP so much, and his band. My anecdotal TP and the Heartbreakers story. Back in 1978, when I was a sullen teenager, my brother-in-law was in the music biz and would call me from time to time and ask me if I wanted free tickets to a show. One night he calls me and says, "Hey, there's a new band tonight at the Paradise club. Let's go. I've got tickets." I asked him: "New band, huh? What's it's name?" He answered: "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers." I said, sarcastically: "Tom Petty gave up race car driving for music? Heartbreakers? That's the stupidest name for a band." My brother-in-law: "Stop being such a morose, sullen, cranky bastard and let's go." So, we went. The Paradise club was about the size of an average 7-11 store and in front of the stage there were these round tables, small, with 2 chairs. General admission. So, my brother-in-law grabbed the table front and center. Meanwhile, I looked around. No security personnel. Ah, those were the days. I wound up bumping into TP and Mike Campbell talking in the tight backstage area. I had no idea who they were. A few minutes later they came on stage. I could just about see TP's nasal hairs, he was that close. The crowd went NUTS. Mike Campbell hit a power G-chord and the band proceeded to blow the roof off the place. Ahhh...to have a hi-def video of that performance. They played like they had nothing to lose and "damn the torpedoes." RIP, TP. Gone but not forgotten.

    I am just a fan so I didn't know about his hip being fractured, he was surely a great leader of this band and knew how to write songs anyone who can write and perform that many songs is truly deserved all the attention he got. I was stunned when I heard about him dying. His little place in the music industry will surely be missed, I remember when the started the Traveling Wilburys it seems all of them loved what they were playing now just about everyone is gone, that reminds me of my own age, I have more years in back of me than in front. I have had a lot of injuries as well including but not limited to a broken neck. That hip fracture was the worst! I finally did have it treated as I would have lost my ability to walk but I can totally sympathize with him and the fact that he wanted to continue for his fans speaks volumes of the kind of man he was. What a sad loss. he was also so young! Rest In Peace Tom Petty

    Best songwriter of our generation. Best band to present his songs. His catalog along with a few others, namely Vanhalen, & The Cars, are the soundtrack of my youth straight up through adulthood and onward to middle age. Each song, like a certain smell instantly time travels me back to what I was doing, and doing it with. That's just the magic that is great music, and I hope to never, ever lose that.
