Glad to find this video as I was ready to throw my Singer 9960 because no matter how I set the tension, it just won't work. Until, I adjusted the screw in the bobbin case. Many thanks!
I like how you demonstrate how something works and then explain how to get it to work correctly. I never fail to learn something as I watch your videos. Thank you...
God bless you!!! After endless hours of trying to fix my tension I changed the cotton I was using and voila! My stitch is PERFECT! Thank you so much for all the knowledge you share. You and your videos are a treasure. ❤ 👏🏼
I do not know your name but I want to say a big thank you for the Bible verses included in your video. Thank you and God bless. I had memorized Timothy 1 & Timothy 2 (both the Epistles plus a lot of other books such as parts of Psalms, Proverbs, parts of the Gospels) while growing up in school. You are the king!!!... I have a brother sewing machine and a tension problem, but after seeing your videos I have fixed it!!! I have tried everything, and the issue was on the bobbing tension you have explained so well and I am pleased to have found you Thank you a million.
Wes, thank you for convincing me that I don't need a bobbin tension meter! I have a Bernina 930 Record, Baby Lock Decorator's Choice (both vintage machines), and a new Baby Lock Verve combination sewing/embroidery machine. I also have a BL Imagine serger and Juki 1500 coverstitch machine. Tension, whether bobbin or looper, has been annoying - all except the Imagine serger. Your video is priceless. You explain things clearly and well enough to instill confidence for those of us who don't have easy access to certified brand mechanics. One of my favorite things to do has been to rescue vintage machines and put them back in service when all they really need is a good cleaning. It is appalling how many people fail to care for their machines at home.
Thank you from my heart ،،، ❤…..I did watch this video from Netherland and really yesterday I did have a really problem with my new sewing machine .. and really you did save my machine
Thank you so much tension was my problem but I watched the first two videos first and learned how to clean my machine. I had no idea that I could open the bottom to clean it.
Thank you for these informative videos. I have a new machine that is driving me crazy because no matter what I have done the bobin tension is too tight. I will apply what I learned from this video to see if I can't correct the issue. Thank you again.🙂
best video i've found on this👍. Just showing how the upper tention works. I realised i never put the thread in the right location I only started practicing on paper. so the stitches were good enough. But then i grabbed some light "active wear" material. and she scrunched up. Still working on it. 😅
Your videos are great. Very direct, and simple to comprehend. I have a 60s Japanese Dressmaker. Both springs in my tension assembly are shot. I could use a tip, on which domestic springs would interchange, and an assembly diagram would be super!
Thank you for this thoughtful video. I believe I will replace my tension assembly. For whatever reason it has historically gradually loosened on its own, where I had to keep an eye while sewing or it would go from 4-5 to 0 on its own. Recently I have been having issues but I blamed it on kni fabric and needles. But when I went to sew a medium weight woven I simply could not get the tension right.
I love your lesson. I have learned so much. My machine is a Singer Scholastic 717 and it needs the 66 bobbin just like say in the lesson. Thank you do much for your videos. Many blessings to you.👏👏👍
I am so glad that you brought up inferior thread. There is no such thing as bargain thread, it constantly breaks, causes sewing issues and wear on your guides. I love love love sewing machines and have over a dozen plus I do long arm quilting and will do minor sewing machine repairs for friends. 9 times out of 10 times when there's a problem with their machine it's lint or thread in the bobbin area or " bargain thread ".
Your teaching is so comprehensible. I do use Emel straight sewing machine, thus I would love to learn the major problems associated with the sewing machine especially problems with the lubricating hook
I will be getting a Singer 600 built into a cabinet. It's from my wife's grandma who passed 20 years ago. Two of the feet are supposedly broken and the machine will need a tune up. I am new to sewing and have dreams of tailoring some ill fitting clothes and making backpacking gear, backpacking quilts, maybe even converting a down bag to quilt. I am reasonably mechanically inclined and fix a lot of stuff, bicycles, and house hold machines. The portable machines look good. I have to think about it. I hope the 600 will be good for the family. I want to grow with it. I know just like bike maintenance I will be doing regular lubrication. I live in Germany by the way but I was born in the 🇺🇸
Please help! I have the singer 6800c, I did everything like you described. The top thread is still looping at the bottom of my fabric. Nothing seems to help. Can it be unfixable? Or what else can I do to fix my machine? Thank you
The utmost Excellent illustrations providing visuals helping immensely and explaining upper, lower tension and bobbins elaborately. You give me confidence to work on my own 3 year old Janome Elna sewing 🧵 machine almost like raising the hood of a car 🚘 and checking fluids. Thanks 😊 I am a new Subbie!
As a person that knows very little about sewing but had a problem with the stitches not being right - this helped me diagnose and fix my problem - aaanndd laid the groundwork for how things actually work so that I might be able to do so again in the future. Thanks!
5:52 My machine (10 yr old Janome hd3000) decided in the middle of a project to stop tensioning the top thread. Adjustment of the wheel, re-threading, replacing the needle, changing the thread does nothing. Yes, it's in time. Watching this to try and solve the issue....
Thanks for all of your videos. I am fighting with my Husqvarna viking 950. The feed dog can no longer be raised. The feed dog seems stuck and nothing moves when I try to get it up. So the fabric don't go forward, neither backwards....What is wrong ? The button for feed dog lowering does nothing and seems not connected with the inside of the machine . Could I see a video to know how fix it ? Thank you so much from FRANCE.
I am so grateful that my 80s Singer does not have to have the bobbin removed to be wound. Winds it right in the case. And the bobbin can only go in one way! PTL when I bought this so many years ago.
I'm having a heck of a time trying to get a consistent tension before and or after the start of a sew. Everywhere seems smooth except the tension spring section? The machine will randomly snag and tangle causing the threads to break no mater the thread strength and size. I notice it's fraying as it goes through too..... It's a pfaff expression 3.0.
Awesome video! Thanks. I have no experience and have a Singer 252. What's the reason for the upper thread getting wound in the bobbin spool and seizing it? I fiddled with so many things through trial and error and managed to fix the issue, but I have no idea what the solution was. I'm looking at my current stich and the bottom thread is a straight line, so bottom tension is too tight. My upper is set on 3.5. Thx.
I have seen your videos and learned a lot today. I have an Old Singer 7105 and the arm on the right side is not functioning properly. I have to “unskrew” when I want to fill the undertread and screw it back when I want to see. Now when I pres the foot panel it won’t sew. Do you have a video about that? Nina Riis Lundstrøm from Denmark.
Good afternoon. Thanks for everything you teach in your videos. I have a question I have a touch and Sew singer 628. The bulb is burn I want to replace it can you help me how to do it please. Thank you .
On all singer machines I've seen, the thumbscrew that holds the needle in, has a kerf from front to back (it is between the thumb and index finger when you grab the screw to tighten or loosen it). Why is it there ? Many thanks for the video.
Today my machine suddenly lost tension. It remained set at 4 but the upper thread acted like 0 tension on it. Threading this machine is like the newer machine you showed. The tension discs are hidden so I can't see if maybe somehow the thread is not going through them. It may be just a coincidence but earlier in the day the thing that disconnects the needle for winding a bobbin failed to disconnect the needle. I sewed for over an hour after that with little problems except that the fabric I was sewing was very stretchy and delicate and when I let the needle get to close to the edge a few times the fabric got eaten by the plate so maybe that contributed to the tension problem.
What kind of thread is ok to use in the Singer HD and other modern machines? I do sewing on paper (for paper crafts) and since it's only for decoration, I don't really care of the quality of thread. However, I don't want to damage my machine or end up having tension issues. What thread should I use and what thread to stay away from? I just got a few spools of thread at Goodwill. How to check if they're ok to use in my sewing machine?
Hi My name is Pat Im from the East Midlands Leicestershire UK I have been watching youre five repare vids .I have fixed three of my machines but the last one is making me scratch my head .,I have tried everything and I cant get the tension right .could it possibly. be that the needle is wrong,I would value youre imput ,if you could give it . Many Thanks for all youre help..
I have a janome memory craft 9700 with tension issues. The top thread isn't holding the bottom thread. No matter what number I set the tension to it doesn't make perfect stitches. I've made sure the needle is new, the thread is new, it is threaded correctly.
Thanks for this video, I have a Singer 5805C which I left in my Mom in law for almost 10 years, now as I'm about to use it I found out that the Bobbin winder is gone, maybe someone tried to repair the unit but forgot to put al things up. Do you happen to have an extra or part lying around that you can sell? I tried searching online but it's out of stock. Regards, Junie
OK so I was hoping you would show it , but no! You have a top loading machine but are showing a front-loading bobbin case! I want to know how to check definitively the tension for a top loading drop in bobbin. Specifically with a scale or tension gauge!! Any Ideas?? I have scouered the net!
Its the same thing just turned down. Do the tension by feel. That how its been done the last 150years. Do some test stiches and figure it out. You got this.
I just subscribed to your channel. I don't do that lightly so thanks for all your are doing. My question are there specialized tools that are needed to work on industrial machines?. We have consew 206 rb at the shop that I would like to keep happy with your help. Thanks for what your are doing and thanks for your Navy service. All the best neal sw fla
I’ve had my machine was cleaned last weekend. Would you. Know anything about Viking designer 1. My sensor on bobbin not letting me know when it’s near empty anymore.
Wrong information? Class 15 goes in to the Singer HD 44-series (according to Singer) I think you say Class 66 in this video. Still -thank you for your useful videos.
I need some help! I have a brother LS-2125i and i am sewing a continuous loop in 2in polyester webbing. I have tried every setting from 0-9, then made small adjustments to the bobbin tension. No matter what i do i have loose bottom threads. It is better when i have the tension wheel set on 9 and have the bobbin tension fairly tight (bobbin takes a little force to lower when holding the thread). Is there anyway to add more tension to the top theead betond the tension wheel
My Singer Quantum 9910 zig-zag is puckering on top, and skipping stitches (going to a straight stitch). The bobbin thread is pulling upper thread through to the bottom. I have never replaced the bobbin holder - should I replace it or try to adjust the tension? My last major project was my daughter's wedding gown - heavy sequin fabric. My son (a fiber optic splicer / and mechanic/machinist took the machine apart and cleaned it and oiled it) but my stitching is still not good. My specialty stitches don't work properly either. HELP!
I've only been sewing for a few months, and the thread slipping out of the take up lever was what used to stump me early on. Not knowing why the thread was bunching up underneath the fabric, I would just rethread the machine, and carry on. I eventually did some RUclips research to find out what was causing it. You'd be surprised at how many instructional videos neglect to instruct viewers to check the thread in the take up lever. A lot of those videos point to tension settings and the bobbin. I just happened to come across one video that suggested it may be a take up lever issue, and BAM, problem solved...lol.
I have a question about the on off switch on a vintage kenmore. I have a zigzag Kenmore model 231. It has the power switch on base of right corner. It doesn’t stop the current from flowing …it’s on all the time that it’s plugged in. Can that be fixed or replaced?
Hello, I have a problem with the upper tension of this same Singer havy duty machine. What happens is that no matter what the tension is, the point is always loose. How can I fix it if the tensor is it closed on top ??? Obrigada.Thanks.
Husqvarna viking E20...just cleaned and lubricated...bobbin tension set correctly based on this video...upper thread tension set to 9 (max)...YET bottom thread laying loose on bottom of fabric...tension is so high it is shortening stitch length and deforming top stitch...not sure what to do since top tension is on max...thoughts anybody...can't afford to send this in for repair and our one and only Husqvarna authorized repair takes forever and seems to have problems fixing things...need help...thanks so much!!!!!
I’ve been watching your videos. I’m still having trouble. My tension is all the way to number 9. I’m frustrated. Trying to save money without repairs. Can you help ?
What if the bobbin tension is wrong from the factory? My machine is new and I think the bobbin tension is too tight becouse I couldn’t get a balanced stitch no matter how I modify the upper thread tension. My upper thread shows on the back of the fabric and the matter is worse as I sew with thicker fabrics. What could I do? I only used the bobbins that the machine came with and I threaded the machine correctly.
When using the TOWA Digital Gauge, do you have the TM-505 insert for Class 15 bobbins? If so, where did you find one in the US? And when you are talking about Improperly Wound Bobbins, do you know there is a Bible Verse scrolling along the bottom of the frame?!
I’m not 100% sure but I think that the tiny thing on the inside of the backside of the bobbin the little metal piece that indicates the stitch is missing and that’s why the teeth aren’t bouncing them down because it has a spring has everything else and everything else is working perfectly. It’s my luck. Everything is 100% out of this world perfect or quite the opposite.😅
My top thread is getting physically stuck in the bobbin area. It goes down and around the bobbin case then gets stuck. The top thread doesn't come back up and out. It keeps doing that and then the needle gets stuck down and doesn't come back up out of the fabric. I don't know what causes this. I checked the timing after this happened a few times. It was off a bit. I fixed the timing. However, the top thread is still getting stuck when it is supposed to come back up and out of the bobbin area. Do you know why this is? Have a video on it? I have a Singer Talent
I have a problem my thread is to loose my bobbin holder that holds the bottom in place is not moving when the machine is running what do I have to do to put it in the right position?
My timing is good in the sense that the bobbin thread is picked as the needle and hook meet. But when I put case back on (for at least the 30th time) to sew a test. Needle follows the stitch path but no thread is being used. I have worked on the PfaFf 919-1 for three days and now have it working worse than it did when my friend brought it to me because it skipping stitches. Can you advice me. I have so many videos and feel like I am following instructions but I must be missing something
My upper tension is set so tight that it is almost impossible to pull the thread through by hand, without breaking the thread. The bobbin tension is so loose that the thread is easily pulled out from the plate. Feels way too loose. Machine is absolutely threaded correctly. Yet, I am still getting birdsnests of upper thread, on the bottom of the material. Any idea what the problem is? Singer 457.
Thank you! I'm working on my wife's sewing machine and discovered your channel today. I subscribed!
Most thorough video on tension, and I've binged watch them all.
Thanks for the nice comment!
Hi Wes, Thank you so much to make this channel. I’m going to back to the first course as per your advice! I will see you soon. 😊
God bless you!!! After endless hours of trying to fix my tension I changed the cotton I was using and voila! My stitch is PERFECT! Thank you so much for all the knowledge you share. You and your videos are a treasure. ❤ 👏🏼
It worked! The tension adjustments worked and my 40 yr old White sews great again! Thank you for making this video and sharing your knowledge!!
I do not know your name but I want to say a big thank you for the Bible verses included in your video. Thank you and God bless. Thank you from my heart ،،، ❤…..I did watch this video from Netherland and really yesterday I did have a really problem with my new sewing machine .. and really you did save my machine
Fantastic instruction. So clear and thorough. I can't wait to get my machine's tension set correctly!
loving your videos so far, i'll be rewatching to hit pause & write notes before tackling all my old relics again, thankyou
Please show me how to thread that bobbin
Thank you for sharing your knowledge about sewing machine troubleshooting 💞 and thank you for sharing God's Word 💖👍
Thank you so much tension was my problem but I watched the first two videos first and learned how to clean my machine. I had no idea that I could open the bottom to clean it.
Part 2 and I couldn't believe you opened up MY MACHINE!
Nice clear explanation inspires me to carry on and not be put off. Thanks
I have solved my problem just watching your video once demonstrating tension problems
A great metaphor for life❤
Thank you for these informative videos. I have a new machine that is driving me crazy because no matter what I have done the bobin tension is too tight. I will apply what I learned from this video to see if I can't correct the issue. Thank you again.🙂
best video i've found on this👍.
Just showing how the upper tention works. I realised i never put the thread in the right location
I only started practicing on paper. so the stitches were good enough.
But then i grabbed some light "active wear" material. and she scrunched up. Still working on it. 😅
Thanks so much. I cleaned out my bobbin case according to your instructions and it worked out fine problem solved.
Your videos are great. Very direct, and simple to comprehend.
I have a 60s Japanese Dressmaker. Both springs in my tension assembly are shot. I could use a tip, on which domestic springs would interchange, and an assembly diagram would be super!

HELP!
is the takeup lever and needle position fixed, or is that something that can get out of time as well???
I've only been sewing for a few months, and the thread slipping out of the take up lever was what used to stump me early on. Not knowing why the thread was bunching up underneath the fabric, I would just rethread the machine, and carry on. I eventually did some RUclips research to find out what was causing it. You'd be surprised at how many instructional videos neglect to instruct viewers to check the thread in the take up lever. A lot of those videos point to tension settings and the bobbin. I just happened to come across one video that suggested it may be a take up lever issue, and BAM, problem solved...lol.
My Heavy Duty Singer is making nests underneath but it's on the highest tension, no. 9. How do i adjust it?
Couldn't figure out which video is part 1 or part 2 of this video. Please tell me which of your videos goes with this video
I have a question about the on off switch on a vintage kenmore. I have a zigzag Kenmore model 231. It has the power switch on base of right corner. It doesn’t stop the current from flowing …it’s on all the time that it’s plugged in. Can that be fixed or replaced?
What class bobbin does an old Elna Supermatic use (with the drop in cams wheels)
The bobbin looks like a type 15 on one side but rounded on the other.
Thank you! I'm learning! 😊 ❤
Hope you cover the thread cutter issues.
?
What if the bobbin tension is wrong from the factory? My machine is new and I think the bobbin tension is too tight becouse I couldn’t get a balanced stitch no matter how I modify the upper thread tension. My upper thread shows on the back of the fabric and the matter is worse as I sew with thicker fabrics. What could I do? I only used the bobbins that the machine came with and I threaded the machine correctly.
Thank you so much for sharing all those tips! I liked to see a Singer Vintage sewing machine.
Blessings
So no matter what number I put it it’s still super hard for me to pull the thread to pull through the upper tension. And it’s not sewing whatsoever
Did you get it fixed?
No i am still trying😮
When using the TOWA Digital Gauge, do you have the TM-505 insert for Class 15 bobbins? If so, where did you find one in the US?
And when you are talking about Improperly Wound Bobbins, do you know there is a Bible Verse scrolling along the bottom of the frame?!
Could you give me an idea on how to adjust that upper tension mechanism
No big deal just like to be thorough
What parts do you order for the new home machine?
I have a metal bobbin case. Can I use a plastic bobbin?
How can i replace the tenstion assembly on singer 2517 model? Thread take up spring is broken. Thank you
I have a problem my thread is to loose my bobbin holder that holds the bottom in place is not moving when the machine is running what do I have to do to put it in the right position?
Singer 457.
