Thanks alot, u saved my project. I didn't realize I didn't fix the needle correctly. I've been sewing for 6 months and I just saw for the first time a detailed video on the front and back side of a needle. Thanks alot.
I have beem off and on sewing since U was a child and just upgraded to this machine, my old brother is 20 years old and i wanted something with more power. Thank you so much for sharing this great video! Your videos are so helpful !🧡
After watching this video, you gave me the know how and confidence to clean my machine. It’s amazing how well my machine runs again after removing a little thread nest and adding oil! Thanks so much for teaching AND saving me 100 bucks- much appreciated
Thank you for this video! I inherited my grandmother's sewing machine and have been using it, but I really didn't know much about the maintenance. I just equated the squeaks and knotted threads to the age of the machine (it's about 40 years old) and thought it was just something I had to deal with. After seeing this I plan on buying some new needles and sewing machine oil and giving it a thorough cleaning!
I am so happy to have found this. I was told that my brother machine NEVER needed oiling. But I knew it must need a little oil here and there because I sew A LOT! You have validated my concern and I am going to take that end piece off and oil that one on the inside as my machine sounds scratchy….and it’s skipping stitches when I sew slow…..does pretty good when sewing fast, but has the worst time sewing slowly. Hopefully by oiling that little wheel on the inside will help! Thank You
So my son in law fixed mine today. We had to take out the part that hides what you just oiled because the thread was stuck tightly in there. He gently pulled towards him the bottom part (where the thread loops back around and up) then carefully lifted the part upwards, releasing the plastic part of the machine. We then were able to safely remove the thread, and I could clearly access the piece you were oiling at 11:23 point of the video. Whew! He sure saved the day for me.
So very helpful. Brother wouldn't give me any info on maintenance. So helpful. I discovered bobbin plate lifts off to get the thread wrapped around the metal. You were right! Thread in all the spots you mentioned. So much better!
New subscriber here and new to sewing. My mom was a seamstress and now that she’s passed away, I am trying to figure out how to do small projects without her guidance. Thank you for your tutorials. You go into details that no one else does and even in this video, I now understand some small issues that I had not seen mentioned in other videos. Your lessons and tips are the most useful that I’ve found. Thank you!

@@TockCustom I have an XR3340, and it doesn't look like there is anything I can safely get at. Does it need to go in for a routine maintenance? It's working fine.
This is hands down the best sewing machine maintenance video I have seen - and I've watched loads of them to try and fix my Brother machine. The video and your explanation is so clear and easy to understand.
Brilliant tutorial. Haven returned back to sewing 26yrs+, your tutorial demonstrated clear instructions. No need to worry about your camera, I could see perfectly well. Thank you 👍
This video was so helpful. I have similar Brother machine model, and when I bought it, seller told me that this maschine should never be oiled...so in three years I have never oiled it...until now. Your video literally saved my maschine. Thank you!
They say that in the manual because… a) some people don’t even know how to thread properly or put the needle in correctly or to clean lint out, let alone know how much to oil…. B) so that you take them in for a pricey $ervice and keep themselves in employment… or trash the machine because it’s plastic and we are wasteful….and we will just buy a new one when they don’t work after 3-5 years …and c) people are stupid and don’t know the basics that if metal is grinding on metal… you SHOULD oil it every so often!
Great video! If you have oil, but not a long tube, you can dip a toothpick to drop a little in there. Also, unplug your foot pedal while your hands are working under the needle
I recently unearthed my brother "project runway limited edition" machine from high school because my vintage singer just can't everything. This helped so much, thank you!
Seriously the best maintenance video ever. I just went and did the maintenance based on your video, my machine is now running like brand new!! Thank you soooo much
I've been researching what new sewing machine I wanted to buy and came across you and this exact machine. You've sold me on it from your other videos. I'm now addicted to your channel. Thank you for such wonderful videos. I'm excited to get my new machine tomorrow. This also reminds me I really need to clean up my previous sewing machine.
Hi there, I just bought a machine during the pandemic. I'm a total beginner and I watched so many videos on youtube. I just found out your channel and damn man, you are so good, such a good teacher. You are making sewing so cool. Love your look (and pants). I just hope you put out more videos in the future. Thanks again.
I'm very happy you're enjoying these so much! I love making wild clothes, it's a ton of fun. I'll be back in the studio this month shooting some new videos through the end of the year. Happy to have your support!
@@TockCustom That's some good news. I know it takes a lot of time to film/edit but keep them coming , as long as you also enjoy doing them. Love the things on your website too. Now if I can only persuade myself that I can make a button shirt like u did. :)
Awesome!! I regularily clean the fuzzies out of my machine. but desperately needed to learn where to use machine oil. Thank you. very easy to follow, clear and concise instructions. Plus! Now I also know how to minimize the bobbin birds nests. I didn't realize that having 4-5" of threads pulled to the back would minimize those, so I will make sure of that from now on. Thank yoou very much for your video!!
Thank you for this simple video on basic sewing machine maintenance. It has saved me so much frustration and money. It is amazing how cleaning the lint out, changing the needle or simply rethreading the machine can fix most problems I've had. Before I'd get so frustrated. I was afraid to trust myself with trying to fix problems so I'd take it to a repair guy. He charged me a lot of money and all he probably did was clean or oil the machine. Again, my sincere thanks for giving me the necessary skills. I actually enjoy cleaning up my machine and taking care of it.
Thank you for this! My first step is to rewind my bobbin - my most common issue is thread loops on the bottom of my work. I know that should be top thread tension, but for me that fixes it 85% of the time (I may have to try adjusting my bobbin tension to see if that helps.) That being said, I just de-linted my bobbin area for the first time on my machine that I've had for 20 years. I pulled a ridiculous amount of lint out of it! 😳 Don't wait, clean it out!
Great as always, I've been using my machine for about 3 months, this will fix all the little issues I'm having, didn't have a clue how often to do this, thanks again for the great content!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I ran across your video, after purchasing a new HD machine, in route. I am making masks and was having a lot of issues. Just followed your instructions on my Kenmore 385 and it is like new. I am able to see through 10 layers of 809 Craft Interfacing. Stitches are perfect. I found a blob of lint under the Bobbin holder, I adjusted the bobbin case a little and used oil for the first time. Thanks again.😇
Dude…you don’t even know how much this helped me!! I have a make that MUST be done in the next few days and the machine was acting up last night (stiff hand knob). Oiling those two bearings seems to have me back on track!! Thanks!
Love you Tock! You are a lifesaver. Up to now I have even been afraid of beginning to sew without knowing how to maintain my machine. I can move forward now. I own a SE-400 that I used but never really cleaned (bad). I bought a SE-625 several months ago but have yet to use it. Excited to get a move on!
Oh that's excellent! Hope you're excited to get that machines out and start making some terrific new things! Now you'll know how to keep your machine healthy and running smooth for years too :)
oh Guru on the mountain...thank you for imparting your wisdom on us. My eyes are open now. thank you for making this enlightening video!!! All of you videos are really helpful. you take the fear out of sewing.
lol this comment is fantastic! Thank you so much for watching Dan, makes me very happy to help with tutorials like this (especially when they're actually helpful to people). Keep having fun! Hope you have an excellent week!
Thank you so much for this video. I was able to clean out my machine and it is running fantastic now. It was starting to squeak every once in a while. Great instructions!!
Thank you so much for this great video. I've been making loads of masks on my Singer machine. Oiled around the bobbin area but didn't know about the area around the thread uptake lever. Machine no longer squeaking like an angry mouse. Thanks again from Wales 😃
Fixed persistent squeak and clank of old Kenmore with this -thanks! I feel POWERFUL thanks to you. Ha! Hey, any chance you can please (when you have time ha-ha!) do a video on how to check/fix/replace blade of a cutter to a machine like SE400/625 etc? Have cleaned it but it's still a shredder instead of a cutter. Trust you 100% and you're the BEST teacher but no worries if no time -understand. Cheers!
I'll add that to my list for sure. Very few machines have that feature, so I'll have to do some research. Thank you for your support, hope you're doing terrific 😊😊
This tutorial is the best! It has given me the confidence to follow step by step to clean my own machine. Explanations and video were great! Thank you.
I have a basic Brother sewing machine (xm2701) and it seized up on me and was told by phone conversation that it would probably cost $150 to fix which wasn't worth it. So I opened it up myself just to look inside since I was going to junk it, and it was very clean and not gunky at all. Mind you Brother in their instructions says don't oil it and even when I called them they said dont oil it. 🤷♀️ Well, I oiled it anyway anywhere and everywhere since I had no idea wear to oil it. I just oiled anywhere I thought something would rotate. 😁 And since I was going to throw it out why not try. Well low and behold it started working again. I actually fixed my machine and all it needed was oil. I'm frustrated that Brother did not advise me correctly! Any thoughts? Why did they say this? What is the correct oiling areas and should I do it regularly? BTW Love your videos!
I'm a new subscriber. So excited to learn from you. I've been watching your older videos to get started. My husband and daughter brought me a sewing machine for my birthday and I only know how to sew by hand.
Thank you. Very useful video. I was given an old Toyota Precision 302 sewing machine about 20 years ago but never used it. I've got it back from my dad's house a few days ago and have been having problems with it (birds nest, snapping threads, sticking, etc). I'll try this first as I don't think it's ever been cleaned. Hopefully that will cure it.
Very sad I’ve ran out of Tock Custom Videos to watch and I’ve watched most of them multiple times. Ive learned so much. Thank you for making such calm easy to listen to and easy to follow tutorials. I hope you are keeping safe in this crazy time and look forward to any future videos you may produce.
I think you're the first person to admit watching ALL of my videos lol. Thank you so much, and I'm very happy they've been helpful! I'm moving next week and I'll be back to making videos very soon again after July 1st!
Thanks this is great my last sewing machine had a horizontal bobin & that machine had lubrication instructions in that manual. This one has so many builtin features that they didn't include a diagram for lubrication. My last machine I had 25 years & it was still working it got me through Design school & many free Lance projects.
Thank you! My machine started making some weird noises and tension became way off making stich very "airy", I oiled it as shown and all is back to normal! 😊 PS. I have Brother NX-200.
Thank you so much! The only repair guy in my area is months out and I need my machine NOW. I guess I will be my own maintenance person and save my money!
Omg please do it, you're going to fall in love with you machines all over again. Didn't we already have this conversation on Instagram? My brain is melting lol - too much cosplay stuff :P
I think I accidentally found an unreleased video by watching the beginner's playlist. 😎 Anyways, I just subscribed to your channel and it's been super helpful to help me learn about my new sewing machine. Cheers! 🍻
Very interesting. The manual for this machine, which looks very similar to my A60SE, specifically states that no oiling should be done by the user. As a maintenance engineer I find this slightly counter-intuitive but rules is rules. I guess the possible dange is that some users would over lubricate and this could cause oil to spray inside the mechanism and hold fluff and lint.
I had a good friend who's a sewing machine repair tech show me their basic maintenance routine on machines, so I felt comfortable sharing this. Hope this was helpful, thanks so much for watching!
I was just watching the coronavirus mask tutorial. Then ended up learning to sew zipper on Jean's. Then got a notification, that this video was uploaded. What a day!!!!!
Speaking of maintenance... I haven't watched the video yet , but I am going to. I had something to tell you. I went looking for a sewing machine today, ANY, sewing machine. Couldn't find one. Then was told to to this other place. They had sewing machines, a couple of Juki's, and about 4 Janome, and 2 Husqvarna/Vikings. Man there told me that to get a good quality sewing machine, I'd have to pay some mega bucks or they wouldn't be worth it. I thought that, that Brother ST150HDH looked like a really good sturdy one (I watched your video testing it out, stress test...) and thought it would cover just about anything I would want to try to do, making clothes, cotton duck material bags, maybe some embroidery (?)... He told me I get what I pay for and that in the long run, it wouldn't be worth it. I'd have to put $1500+ into it to make it matter... He said he's been repairing sewing machines for over 30 years, and that they teach how to sew there as well, $25 an hour. Honestly, does that sound about right? Or is he just trying to make a ton of money?
If you're brand new to sewing, I'd set a budget of about $300 - it's enough for a good machine that will last, and be fun to learn on. Anything less and it will be frustrating, anything more, and it's just unnecessary. The Brother SE-600 or the ST150HDH are excellent starter machines for around $300 :)
@@TockCustom Awesome. Thank you so much. I thought maybe he was just trying to get money. He just kept down talking the other machines. And speaking of crap machines, you remember the little one I showed you? Well it is garbage. I can't get it to pick up the bobbin thread. All it does is pop and sound like throttle is stuck in a car... Guess I'll have to play with something else another day. Thank you so much.
OH. MYGOSH!! Thank you so VERY much for demystifying how to perform these tasks. Total newbie and you answered SO many of my questions. Very less intimidated now.
My Brother machine (CP100X) manual says not to oil it or it could be damaged, and only to take it to a certified shop. Is this yet another attempt at "the man" trying to take my money? This is a great tutorial and it seems a no-brainer that I should be doing this. I’m a maniac with maintenance on my 2 stroke dirt bikes, so I appreciate this video for my new machine 👍
Oh my goodness I needed this! My brother AND my Euro Pro keep breaking my thread!! I cleaned one machine and it works better BUT it won't let me do a backstitch now!! UGH! I hope I can fix it by opening it up! Thx
Thats strange that you can't backstitch now, make sure the backstitch button didn't get obstructed while you were putting your cover back on the machine maybe? Hope you get it resolved quickly!
Again, I enjoyed each of your vids so far even though I m not into sewing (let alone being a tailor). Initially was brought here while looking for info on sm505 portable sewing machine I found in a dumpster (new still in wraps, don't knw why they threw it away - probably due to them cleaning for upcoming Chinese New Year, been like these for years thats making dumpster diving during the period very fruitful 😊)... And been watching one vid after another for the evening... 😘
So incredibly helpful! I’ve learnt more from your video than I did from the instruction dvd that came with my machine - I didn’t know anything about oiling my machine 🤯. Is there a special oil or just a standard machine oil? I have a basic brother machine
Just get any standard 'sewing machine oil', its very thin, and clear... so it wont stain or get greasy when you're working with it. Good for getting into tight details.
Nice Preventive Maintenance video. Very Clear and easy to follow. I do have one question with my Brother JA1400 the upper thread didn't grab the bottom thread, What is the problem in this case? thank you & more power to your channel.
Wonderful demonstrations & narration & lighting, which can help with other makes & models, even old machines. Not sure where is the "clean the bobbin winding clutch". Is that removing thread that can pile up under the thread spool, shown at the end of video?
Hello. New subscriber here. Tomorrow I'm getting my first sawing machine. I'm so nervous. It's a cheap one, for beginners. I think I'll need your videos to become a Pro 👍🏻. Thanks.
My Brother manual says only have it done by a professional. I’ve done my own years ago on my Kenmore but I had it in for a maintenance visit every couple years. That is what I intended to do for this one. It’s about $87.
15 mins that was NOT a waste of time and clearly explained and demonstrated multiple repairs. Thank you!

I recently bought one of this exact model as my first sewing machine. These videos are invaluable, thank you!
Oh that's awesome! I have a feeling I'll be using this machine for a very long time. Thanks for watching :)
Have an excellent weekend!
I LOOOOVE mine. Use it on everything from buckskin to delicate bra laces.
@@TockCustom
How much do you charge?
I have beem off and on sewing since U was a child and just upgraded to this machine, my old brother is 20 years old and i wanted something with more power. Thank you so much for sharing this great video! Your videos are so helpful !🧡
Thanks so much for watching! Hope you have some fun making new stuff this winter :)
After watching this video, you gave me the know how and confidence to clean my machine. It’s amazing how well my machine runs again after removing a little thread nest and adding oil! Thanks so much for teaching AND saving me 100 bucks- much appreciated
Very happy to help! It's such a good feeling when your machine feels like brand new again :)
Thank You
Yes me too
So my son in law fixed mine today.
Thank you!
I'm so happy that you get to keep the love for your mother alive with sewing new projects. That's very special to me 😊
Thank you for such a thoughtful comment, hope you enjoy every stitch of everything you make. Reach out if you need any help!
Just found your channel and I'm addicted to it. Your tutorials are the best ever! You teach everything so calmly and in such a easy to follow way, I've learn lots with you! Thank you for doing this and take your time to share all of this amazing skills with us. You're the best!
I truly appreciate such a positive comment and thoughtful compliment! Please reach out if you have any questions as you're learning. Thanks a ton for watching :)
Thank you! You just saved me $90 for a routine service.
Right?! Happy to help!
Thank you 👍
Great advice. BUT BE AWARE with vintage machines, the flat side of the needle may go to the back, right, or left. Pay attention when you remove it.
Thanks for helping people out with tips on vintage machines :)
This video was so helpful. I have similar Brother machine model, and when I bought it, seller told me that this maschine should never be oiled...so in three years I have never oiled it...until now. Your video literally saved my maschine. Thank you!
You're very welcome. It would be silly for a product like "Sewing Machine Oil" to exist and never be used, right? Thanks for watching :)
I was told not to oil mine too!
The manual to my sq9285 say NOT to oil the machine. It is self lubricating.
These are all excellent suggestions :)
Absolutely wonderful and well put together. Another video to add to show to my students, so they can go back and remember what they learned!
Omg, please tell me all the funny things they say when they make fun of me during these videos. I love insults from teenagers lol
Best tutorial on routine maintenance of brother machines and sewing machines in general. So apt and the camera got everything. Bless you Toc.
Very happy to help! You're machine is gonna be running like a cheetah!
@@TockCustom Yes, yes indeed!
This is the best tutorial I've ever seen for oiling your machine. Thank you so much!
Wanted to double check the spots to oil and lo and behold! It’s Tock! Thanks, man! Come back, Tock! We miss you!
Thank you! Thank you!
So happy this was helpful! Feels great to have your machine working like new again :)
Hope you're having a wonderful week
So happy this was helpful! Hope you're machine is running like a champion now :)
Hope you're staying safe and doing well
WOOOOWWWW AFTER DOING THIS, my stitches look IMMACULATE!!!! Thank you sooo much
That's fantastic!! Very happy to be helpful :)
Thank you so much for watching! Hope these videos are helpful. Let me know if you have any questions along the way!
This tutorial has helped a lot. Even though mine is a xl3500. Yours was the only one that came close to helping me. Thank you
Hopefully that will cure it.
omg I bet it'll run amazing after a good cleaning... also... TOYOTA MAKES SEWING MACHINES!? I must have one!!!
that was a great video. i learned a lot thank you.
Glad this was helpful, thx so much for watching! Enjoy all your projects this winter
Thank you so much! The only repair guy in my area is months out and I need my machine NOW. I guess I will be my own maintenance person and save my money!
I have been sewing for 8 years now and don't do basic maintenance on my machines :') thank you for this, Tock
Omg please do it, you're going to fall in love with you machines all over again. Didn't we already have this conversation on Instagram? My brain is melting lol - too much cosplay stuff :P
Thank you! The instructions worked perfectly for my machine
I'm so very grateful that you've put this video up. You taught me so much in just a few mins!! Thank you, Tock!!
You are so welcome, this is such a great thing to know if you're sewing a lot. Happy this was helpful
I was in the middle of making masks when My machine kept having issues with tension and I had no clue when or where to put the oil in.
Your tutorial is very useful. I expect my Brother Machine to last and last. I enjoy my Brother.
Excellent how to video. I’ve watched a few times. Today, bobbin tension refresher was my goal.
Awesome, glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching :)
Thank u so much, with the help of ur video I could fix the problem of breaking thread at every moment.
God bless u.
Grt video.
I think I accidentally found an unreleased video by watching the beginner's playlist. 😎
Anyways, I just subscribed to your channel and it's been super helpful to help me learn about my new sewing machine. Cheers! 🍻
You totally did lol, just waiting for approval from my sponsor on this one. It's all good :)
What a day!!!!!
lol, my channel has you doing all kinds of weird stuff. Hope it's helpful!
Thanks I really appreciate it I was knee deep and afraid I was gonna have to ask for help! You saved me!
Thank you!! I was about ready to give up until I watched your video about 3 times. My machine went from trash to treasure! :-)
Thanks for this video! I clean my machines regularly and am always willing to learn more about machine maintenance.
It's a great habit to keep your machines clean, big time. Lots of people don't realize how important it is :)
Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you very much for this! This is the only video that shows how/what to do with the top part; appreciate very much your sharing and showing.
👏👏👏😍
You're very welcome! Happy to help out 😊
OH.
Very happy this was so helpful, good way to save some time and quite a bit of cash :)
Hope you're having a great week!
This a great tutorial. I've had my machine since Xmas so it's due a service now I know how thanks.
Glad it helped! You're machine is going to be running smooth as glass after some maintenance :)
Best video I’ve seen for cleaning my Babylock! Thanks for your excellent instruction.
Very nice tutorial. Clearly spoken and demonstrated. Thank You for sharing.
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching 😊
You are a great teacher, thank you for showing us such detailed information.
Ty for all your help I appreciate it 🎉🎉 learning to sew again it's been years since I used my machine😢
Hey CT! Awesome help as always! I'm bingeing here, learning how to sew! Thanks so much!
I'm so thankful for ur sewing tutorial my machine is a JS 2135 brother. Thanks again
You are so welcome! 😀 Thanks for watching
Tock Custom thank you 😊 *bows to the sewing God*
Thank you so much!!! I had trouble with my bobbin and I didn't know about sewing oil at all. thank you!
Excellent! Thanks for the easy to follow instructions. Could see everything perfectly.
That's terrific, hope this helped you save your machine! 😊
I just love your videos! This in special made me want to clean my sewing machine, it was needed. Thank you so much for your well explained videos 🤩
You're very welcome! This is such an important part of keeping a machine at home. Really hope it comes in handy!
TQ TQ TQ for the tutorial. No need to send to shop for simple service anymore ❤
